Remembering Lotte Weiss, a Holocaust survivor who lived two remarkable lives

Lotte was one of the first Jewish prisoners of Auschwitz.
At the age of 18, she was forcibly transported by cattle car to Auschwitz in March 1942, along with her two older sisters.
Her number, 2065 – indelibly embedded on her left arm by the tattooist of Auschwitz, Lale Sokolov – bore a lasting testament to her early internment at the death camp.
Miraculously, through a mix of luck and her sheer determination to survive, Lotte emerged from Auschwitz to find herself all alone in the world, a previously close and happy family life destroyed, her hopes and dreams shattered.
It is truly an amazing feature of Lotte Weiss that she was able to discuss a subject as painful as the Holocaust and her personal family tragedy, and leave everyone coming away feeling full of hope, purpose and believing in the goodness of life and people.

Rabbi moves Holocaust survivors front of vaccine line – The Forward

The COVID-19 vaccination clinic for Holocaust survivors in a local synagogue started out a bit ominously: A police cruiser was stationed outside and a bomb-sniffing German Shepherd was deployed inside, zealously looking for explosives.
“Unfortunately, it’s because we’re Jewish,” said Rabbi Danielle Eskow, who organized the clinic Thursday at Congregation Kehillath Israel, a conservative synagogue in Brookline. “We have to worry about these things.”
The idea for the clinic came from the rabbi’s physician sister, Marisa Tieger. They’d been chatting about how unfair it was that as healthy women in their 30s they had easy access to the vaccine by virtue of their professions, while people much older — especially Holocaust survivors— are struggling to get it. The state’s overwhelmed vaccination program has been riddled with problems, including an inadequate vaccine allotment, scant appointments, and a clunky appointment booking system prone to crashing. Another hurdle is that two of the largest mass vaccination centers — Fenway Park and Gillette Stadium — are hard to get to.

Gochin v. Lithuania

Holocaust victims are sacrosanct. Nazi murderers are monsters. Such basic truths are obvious to all civilized people, but not so in Lithuania.
Since Lithuania achieved independence in 1990, they have rewritten history. The retreat of the Soviets in the face of the Nazi invasion in 1941 has been reframed as a glorious “Lithuanian Uprising”. The murder of 96% of Lithuanian Jews continues to be a mystery to them. Lithuania simply is unable to figure out just how those Jews were “lost”. Lithuania is certain that their enemy, the Soviets, murdered Jews, and admits their staunch Nazi allies did have some responsibility. However, Lithuania has absolute certainty that it was definitely not Lithuanians, because according to the government of Lithuania, other than just a few “degenerates,” Lithuanians were so busy saving Jews that they probably didn’t have time to murder any. The Lithuanian government is also sure it was Jews murdering other Jews, and not Lithuanians doing the murdering. They are perplexed why, after 80 years, we troublesome Jews are still bothering them about such ancient history?

Rabbi Danielle Eskow plans to hold a vaccination clinic for Holocaust survivors on Feb. 25 at the Congregation Kehillath Israel in Brookline.Danielle Eskow
Rabbi Danielle Eskow has organized a COVID-19 vaccination clinic for Holocaust survivors in Brookline in a concerted effort to help a vulnerable population that might otherwise struggle to book an appointment.
Eskow, who was vaccinated in the first phase of the state’s rollout plan, said she hopes the clinic
will come as a relief to survivors, many of whom live alone or are not technologically savvy, she said.
