Nintendo's higher-priced Switch tests desire for bigger OLED screen

Nintendo Co.’s decision to increase the price of its Switch console with an updated model set for October will test new waters for console makers, which have traditionally sought to juice sales by slashing prices instead of raising them.
The coronavirus outbreak reconfigured expectations across the gaming industry, with companies like Nintendo, Sony Group Corp. and Microsoft Corp. all struggling to satisfy runaway demand from players seeking entertainment and escape. The two Japanese gaming giants reported record profits, downloads and subscriber numbers over the past year.
Now Nintendo is betting this momentum can be sustained with a new ¥37,980 ($350) model, about ¥5,000 higher than the standard model’s original price tag and a repudiation of traditional console economics. In an industry where consoles typically get mid-life price cuts, the Switch is moving into a higher tier — largely on the strength of a larger and better OLED display and some added storage. The upgrades are estimated to cost around $10 (¥1,100) more per unit, meaning Nintendo is improving profit margins and relying on its rich library of games to keep sales brisk.

(Bloomberg) -- For years, a former Nintendo Co. employee ran a members-only diner at a secret location in Tokyo, frequented by movers and shakers in the video game industry. After closing its doors just before the pandemic last year, it has quietly reopened as a café and this time anyone can make a reservation. It’s a one-of-a-kind industry institution filled with classic game memorabilia that insists on keeping its location a mystery.
Tucked away at the back of a nondescript building in the hip Shibuya district, the establishment named 84 is the brainchild of Toru Hashimoto, who initially conceived it as a sanctuary for game developers to nerd out and relax. Entering the venue triggers a Legend of Zelda achievement jingle. On the walls are impromptu doodles by the creators of legendary franchises like Pokémon, Dragon Quest and Mega Man. And scattered around the place are precious artifacts from Hashimoto’s time in Nintendo.

Nintendo Co. has announced a new Switch gaming device for release Oct. 8, a long-awaited ¥37,980 ($350) gadget that will succeed its popular console and likely catalyze a wave of new software and holiday season sales.
The new device marks the first hardware upgrade to the console originally released in 2017 for ¥29,980. It features a vibrant 7-inch OLED screen, a wide adjustable stand, a dock with a wired LAN port, 64 gigabytes of internal storage and enhanced audio, according to a statement from the company Tuesday.
The Kyoto-based game-maker broke with convention when it introduced the Switch, a hybrid console capable of connecting to a TV at home as well as being used as an independent mobile device. Sales of the machine have been consistently strong. The COVID-19 pandemic combined with runaway hit Animal Crossing: New Horizons supercharged demand throughout 2020.
