Butter in the Court of Appeals

The Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad (PW&B) was an American railroad that operated from 1836 to 1881. Formed because of the merger of four small lines dating from the earliest days of American railroading in the late 1820s and early 1830s. It was purchased by the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) in 1881, becoming part of their main line in 1902.
From the 24 June 1871 edition of the Cecil Whig:
The case of Solomon Weaver, late of Perryville, against the P. W. & B. Railroad Company, for the price of three firkins of butter, was decided in the Circuit Court for this county in favor of the plaintiff, and the case taken to the Court of Appeals by the Company, which Court confirmed, at its April term, 1871, the decision of the County Court. An Important Era in Rising Sun: The Railroad Arrives

On December 22, 1860 the first engine, “Rockdale,” pulled into Oxford, Pennsylvania.
By December of 1865, the P & B Central had extended its line to Rising Sun. On Christmas Day of that year an excursion train ran from the Cecil County town to Oxford, Pennsylvania, for the benefit of the Presbyterian Church. Cars did not travel the route regularly, though, because the terminus had neither a turntable, depot or water station.
The Cecil Whig (3/34/1866) published a letter from a Rising Sun resident, who related the changes that had occurred in his town since the advent of the railroad.
Mr. Editor: — An important era has taken place in our village. From being a quiet, old-fashioned finished Maryland village, we have been changed into an important railroad terminus, having daily connections with Philadelphia. As a result, property has become in great demand and prices have increased enormously. Thus at the vendue of Mr. Cooper, a few weeks since, the old tav ....

The other main line: Lower Merion's forgotten train line that helped build Philadelphia

LOWER MERION — Most people know the basic story of how the Main Line got its name. The quickest version is that it comes from the old Main Line of the Pennsylvania Railroad, the rail line that now takes SEPTA commuters on a parallel course with Lancaster Avenue.
But, the term main line can apply to any primary route of a railroad.
So what might not be as well-known is there was once another main line that ran through Lower Merion, which,180 years after the first trains ran on this second line, it is still in use.

The Lower Merion Historical Society and Bryn Mawr’s Ludington Library recently teamed up for a talk on Lower Merion’s two main lines – the one most people know along Lancaster Avenue and the forgotten one – the Reading Railroad. The talk was given by township resident and secretary of the Lower Merion Historical Society, Perry Hamilton. ....
