Presented by Uber Driver Stories Good Monday morning! Today was to be the deadline for weed negotiations, with a quorum forcing Gov. Murphy to take action on the legislation on his desk. But Speaker Coughlin on Friday delayed the quorum, giving the Murphy administration and Legislature more time to quibble over details about how to deal with underage users that continue to delay the implementation of weed legalization, despite the fact that 67 percent of New Jersey voters approved it. ....
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – La Crosse’s MTU is honoring a civil rights icon. MTU reserved the spot on buses Thursday for Rosa Parks on the day that would have been her 107th birthday. The day is ‘Transit Equity Day’, which is recognized by organizations across the U.S. Parks famously refused to give up her seat on an Alabama bus in 1955, when buses were segregated across the U.S. MTU staff say the day is a chance to reflect on the impact public transportation has for a community.] “You don’t want to take that for granted because of somebody like this that fought for that. You know, we know we’re doing what’s right now. But it took a lot of people, a lot of couragous people like Rosa Parks to make that. That all people could ride transportation in an equal manor,” said La Crosse MTU director Adam Lorentz. ....
Today, Feb. 4, is the birthday of Rosa Parks, whose act of resistance in refusing to give up her seat on the bus sparked the successful Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1956. This Feb. 4, we plan to join the Labor Network for Sustainability on Transit Equity Day as they connect Rosa Parks’ act of nonviolent resistance to the rights of all people to high-quality public transportation run on clean energy. You should, too. “Urban transit systems in most American cities have become a genuine civil rights issue because the layout of rapid-transit systems determines the accessibility of jobs.” We are thinking of this Martin Luther King Jr. quote as Black History Month begins because 65 years after Rosa Parks’ act of resistance, transit equity is still being fought for. Access to safe, reliable, environmentally sustainable, and affordable transit is still threatened by lack of funding even while it is more important than ever. ....
Thursday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. On Thursday, Feb. 4 at 7 p.m., the Vermont Sierra Club, with support from Transportation for Vermonters and the Vermont Natural Resources Council, will be hosting a virtual Transit Equity Day celebration promoting public transit as a civil right and effective means of combating climate change. The Vermont Sierra Club is joining this day of action on Feb. 4 by hosting its first-ever Transit Equity Awards, a Transit Equity Day virtual conversation with transit leaders and award winners. Throughout the month of January, we will be accepting nominations for community volunteers, public servants, businesses, nonprofits, and municipalities. Nominations can be made via email to [email protected] with a brief statement of why a nominee is deserving of an award. ....
February is Black History Month, a month to reflect on the life-changing contributions African Americans have made to the United States. This week happens to be the birthday of Rosa Parks. For those who may not remember your history, in 1955, Parks refused to give up her seat for a white man on the bus she was riding. Her actions sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott which lasted 381 days and ended with the Supreme Court ruling that segregation on public transportation was unconstitutional. Thursday marks Rosa Parks 108th birthday, and to celebrate her achievements and Transit Equity Day, Hart Transit will be offering free rides systemwide for the day. ....
