NYC Council poised to have a majority of women members

NYC Council poised to have a majority of women members
Women are poised to take over the New York City Council.
As the city Board of Elections continues to sift through mail-in ballots and sort out ranked-choice voting from last Tuesday’s primary election, more than half of the open Council seats are leaning toward women candidates. The results aren’t final yet, but if they hold it would represent a significant shift in the makeup of the city’s legislative body.
“I think it will be fairer a fairer, more just governing body,” predicted Elizabeth Crowley, a former councilwoman who’s now waiting on election results to see if she’ll become the next Queens borough president.

In 2016, Oswald Feliz was a 25-year-old housing attorney working behind the scenes to help Rep. Adriano Espaillat win the 13th Congressional District and become the first Dominican-born lawmaker elected to Congress. Feliz oversaw operations for Espaillat’s campaign in the Bronx, the epicenter of the growing Dominican community in New York City. Now, five years later, the political base the two men built together has sent Feliz into public office.

Ranked Choice Voting Takes Backseat in New York City Debut

Ben Fractenberg/THE CITY
Voting ended for New York City’s first ranked choice election Tuesday with one candidate holding such a sizable lead that counting votes beyond the top pick on each ballot may not be necessary.
Democrat James Gennaro reaped more than 3,200 first-place votes out of upwards of 5,500 cast on Tuesday and during nine days of early voting in the crowded special election contest for a southeast Queens City Council seat.
Up to 2,000 absentee ballots had yet to be counted meaning it could still be weeks before an official winner is announced in the snow-snagged eight-candidate race.
But if his margin remains above 50%, Gennaro will automatically win the special election, called to fill a vacancy left by former Councilmember Rory Lancman. In that event, no tally of voters’ ranked choices of up to four additional candidates will take place.

The debate at a City Council hearing on Monday largely revolved around a single question: Do New York City’s rezonings cause displacement?
According to the de Blasio administration, the answer is no.
“We maintain that we can’t find any causal link between our rezonings and gentrification,” said Anita Laremont, the executive director of the Department of City Planning.
The hearing, held by the Council’s land use committee, focused on a bill that would require certain rezonings to include a racial disparity analysis detailing neighborhood demographics and residents’ ability to afford housing built as part of the zoning change.
