Turkey invites Israeli minister to diplomatic conference after 3-year hiatus

After a three-year hiatus, an Israeli minister has been invited to Turkey to attend an official conference sponsored by the country’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu extended an invitation to Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz, in an apparent attempt to warm Israel’s relations with Turkey as the Middle East battles over natural gas, the Kan public broadcaster reported Wednesday.
Israel has been using energy diplomacy to help create a bloc to counter Turkish policies in the region. But Steinitz made news in March when he mentioned during a press conference in Cyprus that Israel would be open to cooperating with Turkey on natural gas. ....

WASHINGTON (AP) US President Joe Biden is preparing to formally acknowledge that the systematic killing and deportation of hundreds of thousands of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire in modern-day Turkey more than a century ago was genocide, according to US officials.
The anticipated move something Biden had pledged to do as a candidate could further complicate an already tense relationship with Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Administration officials had not informed Turkey as of Wednesday, and Biden could still change his mind, according to one official. The US officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. ....

Ukraine and Russia: why troop build-up unlikely to lead to all-out war


Russia’s recent build-up of 80,000 troops on its eastern border with Ukraine and in Crimea has put the international community on high alert. There are widespread concerns about Moscow’s intentions and a possible threat of war.
Technically, Ukraine and Russia have been engaged in a conflict since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and backed separatist forces in Ukraine’s eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk (collectively Donbas).
The ongoing hostilities in the region have largely faded from the international headlines in recent years. But the latest aggravation in the security situation serves as an important reminder that the conflict is far from over. In fact, given the strategic importance of Ukraine to Russia, any solution to the crisis remains very distant.
