SINGAPORE, Aug 5 — Infectious disease experts
TODAY spoke to yesterday (August 4) were generally optimistic that Singapore will be able to exit the current Phase Two (heightened alert) as scheduled on August 18, despite the recent spike in cases linked to the Jurong Fishery Port and karaoke lounges.
However, among the four interviewed, only one, Dr Leong Hoe Nam from Rophi Clinic, believes that the current restrictions may be extended by another four to six weeks.

Half of hospitalised Covid-19 patients suffered at least one complication: UK study

SINGAPORE - A large-scale study covering 302 hospitals in Britain has found that half the patients hospitalised for Covid-19 suffered at least one complication, with some possibly leading to long-term health problems such as kidney failure.
The study, involving more than 73,000 patients aged 19 years and older, found that such complications occurred even in those who were young and healthy. It has just been published in the renowned British medical journal, The Lancet.
The article said: "Many of the complications identified are likely to have important long-term effects. Healthcare systems and policymakers should prepare for increases in population morbidity arising from Covid-19 and its subsequent complications."

Making the call to lift restrictions not easy in Singapore's transition phase
It's a tough political decision - rather than a public health one - and also all about timing

Restrictions on such higher-risk activities were to be lifted next Monday, but cases have spiked to double digits for the past few days. With the two-step easing of restrictions, the authorities now have the flexibility to decide whether to go ahead with relaxing the curbs as planned, or keep them in place for another week or two.ST PHOTO: KELVIN CHNG

While the country cheered last week over the news that some measures in phase two (heightened alert) would be eased from June 13, the beleaguered food and beverage (F&B) industry also perked up when the Ministry of Health (MOH) said dining in for groups of five will be allowed to resume from next Monday, as long as the Covid-19 situation remained under control.

Ring-fencing intensified to avoid second Covid-19 circuit breaker in Spore

Recently, the approach was used in Tan Tock Seng Hospital with some success. - ST
SINGAPORE (The Straits Times/ANN): Ring-fencing strategies that aim to limit Covid-19 transmissions and contain their spread have been intensified recently, helping Singapore stave off a second circuit breaker for now.
Experts note that larger areas are now being closed off and more people made to undergo swab testing.
Professor Teo Yik Ying, dean of the National University of Singapore's (NUS) Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, said that ring-fencing can help to flatten the curve of infections by preventing transmissions from spilling over to other sectors.
