Developing and sharpening a familiar but distinct fusion of hip-hop, R&B and funk for its sound, DMV-bred band KICKK is one to watch. Playing to each other effortlessly, every one of the band's members — Idryis Winfield as lead rapper, Cameron Luchie with a wicked guitar solo, Khalil Abdul-Wakeel on drums, KC Lewsey providing backing vocals and keys and Kai Friedenberg rounding out the sound as producer and bassist — shines without dimming the light of the member beside them. In the group's debut single, "Doing Your Thing," KICKK delivers wise lessons by alternating between razor-sharp bars and half-sung, half-spoken-word melodies.

While many of us have gotten better at using technology to feel close to our friends and collaborators over the past year, there's still no replacement for being in the same room as someone who you swear can read your mind. That's what it feels like to watch punk band Palberta, whose music makes magic out of repeated phrases sung in tight harmony and charmingly zany pop hooks. On 'Ignorance,' The Weather Station Compels You To Care

Ignorance is consumed with and bewildered by a compulsion to care. "There are many things you may ask of me," Tamara Lindeman sings on her fifth album as The Weather Station, "but don't ask me for indifference. / Don't come to me for distance." In so many words, Lindeman offers the crux of this work: the many ways there are to respond to crises; how crucial and how difficult it is to meet them with compassion.
Lindeman's debut for Fat Possum Records,
Ignorance, is her most sonically adventurous and rhythmically dense album to date. Lindeman's early releases were filled with fingerpicked folk songs, guided by a careful eye for detail and Lindeman's swooping, graceful voice; 2017's self-titled effort expanded that sound with bigger, buzzier guitars and moody string arrangements ("I wanted to make a rock and roll record," Lindeman then explained in a press release). In 2020, there were many ways to understand the year in music; this week, we're considering five. Even more than "mindfulness" or "self-care," "chill" has morphed into a context-flattening buzzword, not quite a genre of music but certainly a tool used to categorize it, especially as a beacon of calm in your streaming app of choice. Still, it might be just the right term for the palliative care so many of us have spent the months indoors desperately self-administering, by way of whatever meditative media we could find. The musicians who massaged our temples for us this year took more than one approach: some immersive soundscapes, some acoustic lullabies, one wild pop-punk experiment. We couldn't conquer the year's chaos on our own, and on some days it conquered us — but in our better moments, we could at least try our hardest to chill.
