Princeton Removes Greek, Latin for Classics Majors to Combat Racism

Princeton University decided recently to remove Greek and Latin for Classics majors to combat – what it called- institutional racism.
Faculty members approved changes to the Classics department, including eliminating the “classics” track, which required an intermediate proficiency in Greek or Latin to enter the concentration, according to Princeton Alumni Weekly. The requirement for students to take Greek or Latin was also removed.

A diversity and equity statement on the department’s site says that the “history of our own department bears witness to the place of Classics in the long arc of systemic racism.” ....

Two Princetonians awarded Gaither Fellowship to work at Carnegie Endowment

Princeton University senior Nikhita Salgame has been awarded a Gaither Junior Fellowship, which gives graduating seniors an opportunity to work as research assistants to scholars at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Benjamin Press, a 2020 graduate, received the award in 2020.
They were among a select group of students from around the country chosen for the James C. Gaither Junior Fellows program, each specializing in a different topic or region. Salgame will join the Carnegie Endowment’s Democracy, Conflict and Governance program, where Press worked this past year. ....
