HADLEY — Worry that residents and employees who don’t get a COVID-19 vaccine, or other similar vaccinations, will not be allowed inside municipal buildings or onto town-owned spaces prompted the Select Board to create a policy to safeguard public access.
In a 4-1 vote Wednesday, with board member Jane Nevinsmith dissenting, the new vaccine policy states that “the public shall not be denied access to town buildings, facilities, property, or events based upon vaccine status unless otherwise required by law.”

Pittsboro Medical Device Manufacturer Vaulted To Global Relevance

Pittsboro Medical Device Manufacturer Vaulted To Global Relevance
Medical device manufacturers have come under intense scrutiny in the last year. Several scrambled at the pandemic’s start to supply COVID-19-specific products, with limited success. Just this month, federal regulators harangued a medical laboratory in Baltimore after hasty disregard for sanitation standards led to about 15 million contaminated vaccines.
But Pittsboro’s Gilero — an engineering design firm and medical device producer — is showing the world how it’s done.
I caught up with Gilero’s CEO, Ted Mosler, last week to see what new and ambitious plans he has for the yet-modest operation. Last I wrote about the company, Gov. Roy Cooper had just visited the Pittsboro plant to examine its face shield production. Gilero, which only opened its Pittsboro location in 2019, shot to statewide prominence when its 3D printed plastic protectors were used in health care facilities around North Carolina.

Furmint, sweet to dry

ALLISON LEVINE
Furmint is more than just one of the primary varieties used in Tokaji Aszú dessert wines. From a dry, crisp wine to a sweet wine, Furmint is Hungary’s flagship grape.
The first mention of the Furmint grape was in a reference in an ecclesiastical document in 1611. Then in the mid-19th century, Furmint was identified as one of the top three most widespread cultivars of the 63 grape varieties in use at the time. In the 1880s, after phylloxera damaged the vines, the vineyards were replanted with Furmint and it became the truly dominant grape variety.
The heritage of Furmint is replete with myths. Stories claim that it came from abroad, possibly from Italy, brought over by missionaries, colonists, soldiers or kings. Actually, Furmint is the result of a natural genetic cross between Gouais Blanc (an ancient variety) and an unknown, likely extinct, local variety. With a genetic link to Gouais Blanc, Furmint is half-siblings with European grape varieties, including Chardonnay, Gamay and Riesling.
