'Anvesana: Reflections in solitude' featured intriguing themes in myriad styles

Four exponents of four dance styles perform thought-provoking pieces at the Anvesana festival
It was a joy to watch stalwarts of four Indian classical dance styles, Bijayini Satpathy (Odissi), Methil Devika (Mohiniyattam), Rama Vaidyanathan (Bharatanatyam), and Aditi Mangaldas (Kathak) at ‘Anvesana: Reflections in Solitude’, a digital dance festival.

“It is fascinating to look into the minds of a creator. Does a physical lockdown mean a lockdown of spirit and creativity?” asked Lata Pada, artistic director, Sampradaya Dance Creations, Canada, which organised the festival. While providing opportunities for young artistes with virtual projects such as the one based on Maya Angelou’s autobiography,

Since 2011, the World Music Institute’s Dancing the Gods festival has consistently delivered high-quality Indian dance to New York. Last year, like so much else, it was cancelled. This year, like so much else, it’s virtual — which means that another stage experience is being mediated by cameras, with all the attendant possibilities and pitfalls.

Dancers are experimenting with form and medium as they try to find new ways to reach audiences
What do artistes do when the live audience that provides them with energy and sustenance is taken away? How do they communicate? This past year has been all about this. Denied a stage, many dancers took to social media, with some uploading excerpts from previous productions, some posting videos of themselves dancing at home or on their terraces, some posting practice sessions.

The repertoire was challenging.
It had difficult shabdam, varnam, padam, javali and thillana - key elements in the Indian classical dance form bharatanatyam.
But, more importantly, the artiste had to show expressions of love for the lord tellingly during the arangetram (debut on stage) as the theme was Mohamana: The Love Within.
Budding dancer Soo Mei Fei executed the rhythmic pieces flawlessly at the Goodman Arts Centre Black Box on Tuesday.
"The performance was not a debut but that of a professional dancer," said veteran local dancer and choreographer V. Balakrishnan. "I have no words to express the standard and quality of Mei Fei's performance from the first piece itself. She has a very bright future."

A new dance series presents research-oriented performances using good production values
Pratiroop is a recent online series hosted by Warrier Foundation to promote classical art and raise funds for underprivileged children. Senior gurus such as Rama Vaidyanathan, Vyjayanthi Kashi, Dr. Neena Prasad, Sharmila Biswas and Prerana Shrimali, representing different genres, have mentored dancers Prateeksha Kashi, Nishtha Budhlakoti, Rohini Banerjee, Divya Warrier and Keertana Ravi, respectively.
“We have been able to reach over ten lakh people across our social media platforms, taking them through the actual journey of how an artiste evolves. The series was powered by Indian Raga and guided by their CEO Sriram about how to change viewer perceptions towards research-oriented productions and to reach new global audiences,” says Divya Warrier.
