Two weeks ago, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) tweeted, The Republican Party is no longer the wine and cheese party. It s the beer and blue jeans party. That echoed Sen. Josh Hawley s (R-MO) election night tweet that Republicans are a working-class party now.
Such a re-conceiving of the Party of Lincoln is a big mistake, and not in terms of policy or even ideology. Setting aside the category error of equating cheese with jeans, there are two serious problems with Jordan s framing. ....

Historians will love Donald Trump even if they hate him: He will leave a legacy that will be talked about for a long time.
His term began by smashing the paradigm of who could be elected president; it effectively ended with some of his supporters smashing the Capitol. Whatever accomplishments Trump managed will forever be overshadowed by the violence of Jan. 6. Trump showed us just how fragile our democracy and our institutions are â but also perhaps how resilient. Trump did not create the polarization that divides America today but he certainly sharpened it, and reveled in doing so. Trump remade the Republican Party in his image, showing just how potent the combination of right-wing populism and nativism can be. Trump was not an aberration, though. He represents a strain of American politics that runs back to the Know-Nothing Party of the 1850s; the only difference is they did not come to govern the country and he did. ....

Chapel Hill, N.C. After a series of appeals, the N.C. High School Athletic Association has released the second draft of the 2021-2025 realignment proposal.
The second draft takes into account all appeals submitted by schools following the first draft, which was released in December. However, not all appeals were honored.
“This draft represents a sacrifice of time by committee members to review and study all submitted suggestions and proposals,” said NCHSAA Commissioner Que Tucker in an update to schools about the second draft. “While the draft does not satisfy all wishes and wants of each member school, it does represent an intentional effort by the committee to be fair and consistent in its decisions relative to any changes in conferences from the initial draft.” ....
