United Way of Greater Portland raises $8.1M, names WEX leader as next campaign chair

While the pandemic has dampened much charitable giving, the United Way of Greater Portland on Wednesday said it received donations totaling over $8.1 million in last year’s community fundraising campaign, up 4% from the 2019 total.
The campaign, which kicked off in September 2020, drew contributions from 160 Maine businesses, other partners and their employees, in support of a wide range of organizations that advance education, financial stability and health for residents of greater Portland.
A total of $4.9 million came from organizational partners, according to a news release. They included L.L.Bean Inc., IDEXX Laboratories, Hannaford Supermarkets, Unum Group, TD Bank, WEX Inc., MaineHealth, John T. Gorman Foundation, BerryDunn, SunLife Financial/Disability RMS, Gorham Savings Bank, MEMIC, Texas Instruments, Bank of America, Baker Newman Noyes, KeyBank, Dead River Co., Martin’s Point Health Care, Drummond Woodsum, Verrill and ON Semiconduct ....

Portland affordable housing group acquires eastern waterfront property

LIHC Investment Group bought 144-152 Fore St. from Jackrabbit LLC for $8.3 million.
Mac Simpson of Porta & Co. represented the seller and Joseph Porta of Porta & Co. represented the buyer.
Located at the base of Munjoy Hill, the property comprises a 43,210-square-foot building on 1.54 acres. It was built in 1963 and renovated in 1990.
“We are excited to be a part of the revitalization of Portland’s historic Eastern Waterfront,” Andrew Gendron, a principal with LIHC Investment Group, said in a news release. “Over the past five years, we’ve watched businesses, employees and new sources of investment breathe new life into one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods. PORTLAND, Maine For 25 years, Ruth s Reusable Resources in Portland has been helping teachers and school districts with classroom supplies.
When the pandemic forced students and teachers out of their classrooms in March, the program saw the demand for its services spike as many people were in need of computers.
