Biden's Title IX changes will affect UNL sexual assault allegation process

The federal government has started reviewing Title IX rules and regulations for how schools, including the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, should proceed with sexual misconduct allegations.
On April 6, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights announced in a letter that President Joe Biden’s administration would conduct public hearings for input on what reforms need to be made to create a fair process that supports survivors of sexual assault and sexual harassment.
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 protects people from discrimination on the basis of sex in educational programs. On his first day in office, Biden signed an executive order that extends Title IX to include protection of discrimination from sexual orientation and gender identity.

UNL to offer a two-week winter interim session before spring 2022 semester

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln will have a two-week interim session prior to the beginning of the spring 2022 semester.
This two-week session comes after UNL held two three-week sessions during the winter break of the 2020-21 academic year — one right after the fall semester and the other right before the spring semester.
Leslie Reed, UNL’s public affairs director, said the three-week sessions over the winter break were due to COVID-19 precautions. University administrators wanted to limit travel during the winter, which led to an eight-week break. In addition, they wanted to offer students the ability to take advantage during that downtime through the interim sessions, Reed said.

Ramadan rules, Flags of Hope: News from around our 50 states

From USA TODAY Network and wire reports
Alabama
Orange Beach: Beach season is heating up, and the coastal region is getting federal money to help recover from tourism losses caused by the pandemic. The Commerce Department’s Economic Development Administration said Thursday that it will provide the Alabama Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau with $800,000 for a marketing program. The money will be combined with $200,000 in local funding. The agency is helping communities nationwide implement programs to counter economic hardships amid the pandemic, said Dennis Alvord, acting assistant secretary for economic development. “This investment will fund a strategic, multi-faceted marketing campaign designed to attract visitors to the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach area, resulting in continuous economic growth and job creation,” he said in a statement. Officials hope to boost business and reclaim tourists who couldn’t visit during the COVID-19 shutdown, which included the closure of the state’s beaches a year ago, a problem made all the worse by damage from Hurricane Sally in September. Business owners have compared the loss to the fallout from the Gulf oil spill of 2010. Stores and restaurants have been bustling this spring, and residents hope business will improve even more since the state lifted its mask mandate and other restrictions Friday.
