High court rules challenge to Trump census plan is premature – North Carolina Lawyers Weekly

High court rules challenge to Trump census plan is premature
WASHINGTON (AP) A divided Supreme Court has dismissed as premature a challenge to President Donald Trump’s plan to exclude people living in the country illegally from the population count used to allot states seats in the House of Representatives.
The court’s decision Friday, led by its conservative justices, is not a final ruling on the matter and, while it allows Trump to pursue the plan for now, it’s not clear whether he will receive final numbers from the Census Bureau before he leaves office next month.
If the president still has not received final census numbers by the time Joe Biden takes office Jan. 20, Trump’s plan will be effectively dead because Biden is extremely unlikely to pursue it. It’s also possible the Biden administration would take steps to try to reverse decisions made under Trump. ....

Supreme Court Punts Census Case, Giving Trump An Iffy Chance To Alter Numbers

Updated at 6:06 p.m. ET
The U.S. Supreme Court ducked a direct ruling Friday on whether President Trump can exclude undocumented immigrants from a key census count.
At issue in the case was Trump s July memorandum ordering the U.S. Census Bureau for the first time to exclude undocumented immigrants from the decennial census for purposes of reapportionment. The count is used to determine how many seats each state gets in the House of Representatives and the Electoral College.
In an unsigned opinion, the court said it would be premature to rule on the case right now because it is riddled with contingencies and speculation and even the Trump administration doesn t know how many undocumented immigrants there are or where they live. ....

U.S. Supreme Court throws out challenge to Trump census immigrant plan

5 Min Read
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday threw out a lawsuit seeking to block President Donald Trump’s plan to exclude immigrants living illegally in the United States from the population count used to allocate congressional districts to states.
The 6-3 ruling on ideological lines, with the court’s six conservatives in the majority and three liberals dissenting, gives Trump a short-term victory as he pursues his hard-line policies toward immigration in the final weeks of his presidency.
However, his administration is battling against the clock to follow through on the vaguely defined proposal before President-elect Joe Biden takes office on Jan 20. The justices left open the possibility of fresh litigation if Trump’s administration completes its plan. ....

Supreme Court Defers Ruling on Trump's Plan To Exclude 'Illegal Immigrants' From Congressional Apportionment

The Supreme Court has declined to issue a final ruling on the legality of President Donald Trump s plan to exclude undocumented immigrants from being counted in population allotments for state seats in the House of Representatives.
The Supreme Court also said the lawsuit on congressional apportionments was premature, as reported by the Independent.
The plan to exclude undocumented immigrants was criticized by civil rights groups and immigrant rights organizations. The court s decision on Friday is not a final ruling on the matter.
However, it lets the Trump administration to follow the plan for now, despite it remains unclear as to whether the White House will receive final numbers from the Census Bureau before Trump leaves the office next month. ....
