Youthful radiance and earnest sincerity characterize the singing of tenor Brian Giebler, a Syracuse native, in his first solo recording “A Lad’s Love,” which is up for a Grammy Award on Sunday.  If there were more tenors with voices as clear, weightless and inviting then maybe song recitals wouldn’t be such a rarity.
Besides the polished performances by Giebler and pianist Steven McGhee, what also makes the recent disc from Bridge Records so beguiling is the intertwined thematic strands that unite the repertoire.  The selections are songs composed by five British men who lived during the first half of the last century.  Among them, Benjamin Britten is the best known and also the youngest. ....

Brought up by Swedish widow Morie (a diminutive for mor, or mother) alongside her stepsister Pie (for Piper), Vera has always known that her biological mother is notorious brothelkeeper Madame Rose, with whom she has intermittent contact. ....

Last year, more people in the U.S. retired than ever before. Roughly 28.6 million baby boomers left their work life behind in the third quarter of 2020 alone about 3.2 million more than over the same period in 2019, according to the Pew Research Center. Some may have lost their jobs as casualties of COVID-19 and don t want to find another during a public health crisis, others may have retired a little earlier than planned out of fear of contracting the virus. And then there are those who may have simply felt like a pandemic was as good a time as any to live in the moment a ....
