US Senate OKs bill to fight hate crimes against Asian Americans

The Senate on Thursday overwhelmingly passed a bill that would help combat the rise of hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, a bipartisan denunciation of such violence during the coronavirus pandemic and a modest step toward legislating in a chamber where most of President Joe Biden s agenda has stalled.
The measure would expedite the review of hate crimes at the Justice Department and provide support for local law enforcement in response to thousands of reported violent incidents in the past year. Police have seen a noted uptick in such crimes, including the February death of an 84-year-old man who was pushed to the ground near his home in San Francisco, a youn ....

Heightened apprehension among Asians in the US

THERE is a general climate of heightened apprehension and concern among Asians, including Malaysians, in the United States following increased Asian hate in the country after the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak, observes Elina Noor (pic), who is Director of Political-Security Affairs at the Asia Society Policy Institute, Washington DC.
In response to rising anti-Asian racism, Elina notes that the Biden administration has taken steps to recognise and address the situation.

U.S. Rep. Brian Babin, a guest on this week’s Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall, said despite the recent series of mass murders in this country, new gun laws won’t solve the problem.
“If gun control worked, then why are cities like Indianapolis or like Chicago, New York, why do some of these cities have some of the highest murder rates in the entire country,” he said.
