Philonise Floyd wears a face mask referencing his brother George s killing as he and other family members speak with reporters at the White House following their meeting with President Joe Biden in Washington May 25. (CNS/Reuters/Kevin Lamarque) President Joe Biden welcomed the family of George Floyd to the White House on the one- year anniversary of his murder, and it was very moving. The family and the president both urged Congress to enact bipartisan police reforms. The president behaved with dignity. For four years, such moments were impossible to imagine, and it is good that they are back. Whatever else a president must do, calling forth the better angels of our nature is at the top of the list. It was no surprise the Floyd family acted with dignity both at the White House and later at the Capitol: They have acted with dignity throughout this year of reckoning, and they, unlike the politicians they engaged yesterday, never asked to be placed in this posi ....
Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., speaks to reporters after House Republicans vote to remove her as chair of the House GOP Conference on Capitol Hill in Washington May 12, 2021. (CNS/Reuters/Jonathan Ernst) At her Letters from an American, historian Heather Cox Richardson reflects on the ouster of U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney from leadership in the GOP House caucus and the art of gaslighting, which is the only thing that seems to unite the current Republican Party. In The Washington Post, a fine analysis of how the lackluster jobs numbers, combined with concerns about inflation, are causing people to wonder about President Joe Biden s big spending plans. Of course, we need that money to build infrastructure and to expand our notion of infrastructure to include things like childcare, without which millions will be unemployed or underemployed. My solution? Make sure you r ....
An election worker in Houston processes mail-in ballots Nov. 2, 2020. Election Day was Nov. 3. (CNS/Callaghan O Hare, Reuters) Ambivalence in spades. That is how I feel about corporate America interesting itself in politics. In The New York Times, a report on some big companies in Texas opposing the efforts to restrict voting in that state. This press release from the Free Enterprise Project suggests that CEOs at companies like American Express and Bristol Meyers Squibb are waffling when asked about their stance at corporate shareholder meetings. Would anyone be surprised that corporate America would approach such momentous issues with a focus on how it would affect their bottom line? Our system presumes self-interest helps strengthen democracy, but a multinational corporation has a big self, big enough to swamp the rest of us. ....
The award for the best article on the religious left I have read all year and I most certainly include my own writing goes to Matthew Sitman for this excellent essay at The New Republic. His closing paragraph should be memorized by all who wish to claim religious sanction for progressive politics: Politics always takes place in the shadow of death, among people who even during righteous campaigns fail to honor the dignity of their neighbors. The task of the religious left can t be found in demographics or the polls, or in the divine sanction it can offer for this or that policy. Instead, it is found in offering witness to the possibility of a beloved community, one that sees eternity looming beyond the next election. ....
