But some, including the hot cloud-computing company Appian, committed to hundreds of new hires. Indeed, plenty of other good business news came from Washingtonian’s Tech Titans during the past year. Our 2021 winners who were selected through both reporting and an informal process of nominations from their peers managed to start up new and innovative companies, close on huge funding rounds, ink massive contracts, and announce initial public offerings. (DARPA) WASHINGTON The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Pentagon’s top research arm, has a new leader. Stefanie Tompkins, President Joe Biden’s appointee, was sworn in Monday as DARPA director. She served 11 years in various roles at the agency, including a stint from 2017-2018 as acting deputy director. “I am honored and thrilled to return to DARPA, where breakthrough technologies are a near-daily occurrence. Such breakthroughs could not be more consequential for our national security, economic competitiveness, and our personal lives,” Tompkins said. ....

Stefanie Tompkins was sworn in on Monday as the 23rd director of the Defense Advanced Projects Research Agency. Tompkins is returning to DARPA after a stint as vice president for research and technology transfer at Colorado School of Mines. Previously, Tompkins has been DARPA s acting director, chief of staff and director of the Defense Sciences Office. ....
