What does it take to create a new Smithsonian Museum?

Latin Americans have been part of the United States s history since before the country was formed, but it s taken more than two centuries for them to be recognized in the nation s capital. Now, a new Smithsonian museum will honor their culture, contributions and legacy.
“For almost 500 years, since the founding of St. Augustine, Florida, Latinos have made significant contributions to the history, heritage, art, sciences, culture, geography and military accomplishments of our great country, but unfortunately that story isn’t currently reflective in our national museums,” said activist and designer Henry Muñoz in a release.
The legislation establishing the museum as part of the Smithsonian Institution was first introduced by Rep. Jose Serrano of New York in April 2019 and passed the Senate on Dec. 3. Serrano, a Puerto Rican who has represented the Bronx since 1990, is retiring due to a diagnosis of Parkinson s disease and will be succeeded by Ritchie Torres, the f ....

Opinion: L.A.'s turn for a COVID-19 catastrophe

Good morning. I’m Paul Thornton, and it is Saturday, Dec. 19, 2020. One year ago yesterday, the House voted to impeach President Trump. Let’s take a look back at the week in Opinion.
The surge in COVID-19 deaths, though ferocious and gut-wrenching, is happening right on schedule. Weeks ago, as it became clear that Southern California was losing control of its epidemic, daily deaths had not yet hit record levels. In fact, the distressing body count we’re seeing now reflects the level of viral spread from two or three weeks ago, when new cases in Los Angeles County were rising fast but still in the range of about 8,000-10,000 per day far below the roughly 15,000 new daily diagnoses we’re seeing now. ....

Essential Arts newsletter: The Beethoven effect in music and art

Hello, I’m Times music critic
Mark Swed, this week giving our irreplaceable Carolina A. Miranda a break before Christmas as we keep arts essential. I’m here just in time to point out that this week our most essential composer,
Ludwig van Beethoven unless you care to call him Louis van Beethoven, as a new German biopic does marks what would have been his 250th birthday. So Beethoven is where we’ll start.

Music for our times
In his review of the German TV film, Times contributor Robert Abele found it “elegantly tailored” but “never exactly stirring,” which sounds more Louis-like than the Ludwig we all know. I haven’t seen it because I’ve been too busy trying to catch up with all the other things Beethoven. It’s been a full plate. But then, the Beethoven plate is always full. No matter where you are, no matter what you listen to, Beethoven molecu ....
