Detroit Police Chief James Craig set to announce retirement, sources say


According to one police source who requested anonymity, Craig is eyeing a run for governor as a Republican against Gretchen Whitmer. Fox 2 news also is reporting that Craig is expected to run for a statewide office,  possibly governor.
Craig was the chief of the Cincinnati Police Department from 2011 to 2013, before leaving for the top post in his hometown. 
Retired Deputy Chief Steve Dolunt, who said he has not yet spoken to Craig about the reported news, had only words of praise for Craig.
He s done wonders for this city. He has changed this department around and built trust among the citizens of Detroit, said Dolunt, who retired in 2017 after 31 years of service.  I was there with him for four years and I saw a major turnaround. ....

Detroit Police Chief James Craig set to retire, run for governor, sources say

Police Chief James Craig, who over the last year has witnessed and fought a pandemic, a controversial Black Lives Matter movement and record violent shootings in the city of Detroit, is expected to announce his retirement from the department and his candidacy for governor next week, according to police and other sources. 
Craig is scheduled to hold a news conference on Monday, though his media spokesperson offered no details about the event beyond saying that a news conference is coming. ....

Daunte Wright, George Floyd and Rayshard Brooks, Black men, shot by police after resisting arrest


Take the case of Rayshard Brooks. He was being handcuffed June 12 by Atlanta police for a suspected DUI after falling asleep in the drive-thru line at a Wendy’s when he grabbed an officer’s taser and ran. He was shot and killed after he turned around and fired the taser.
Jacob Blake was shot and left paralyzed Aug. 23 in Kenosha, Wisconsin, after he bolted from officers and reached into his car, where he had a knife. Daunte Wright was shot and killed April 11 near Minneapolis when he jumped back into his car during a traffic stop after police found he had an outstanding felony warrant. ....
