sherri ly is live at the capitol capitol. >> reporter: right now, the votes just aren't there. these blurry eyed members of congress may be in for a rough morning. they worked late as republicans scrambled to find a way forward. john boehner couldn't convince enough conservative members of his party to back his plan to raise the debt ceiling in exchange for some but apparently not enough spending cuts. >> we're not there yet, but the objectives of house republicans remain the same. >> reporter: and democrats piled on. boehner will try to twist more arms to get his plan through. but from there, it still has to go through the senate. while the president has largely on the sidelines, the white house tried a new tax yesterday. the christmas shopping season could be in jeopardy if a long- term deal isn't struck. >> the reason we talked about the holiday season is because as constructed now, the measure that the speaker of the house put forward would almost certainly require all of us to go through this again before the end of the year. >> reporter: house republicans hope to get something passed today. then immediately kick it over to the senate. even working through the entire weekend, there may just not be enough time to get this done. >> all right. doug luzader on capitol hill, thank you. virginia governor bob mcdonald is weighing in on the debt crisis. he's urging congress to vote in support of john boehner's bill before the deadline. the plan achieves the goal of cutting spending without raising taxes. if there's no deal by the time financial markets close today, the white house will announce the prioritities of which hill bills will get paid. who will get paid next week? for more on that, we turn to sherri ly live on capitol hill. >> reporter: some financial experts believe the treasury may have enough to get by for days or weeks beyond the deadline. but as plans are being made, there are some concerns that millions may not get paid. at the top of the list are medicare claims followed by social security and also in the top 5 is paychecks to military personnel. the government is warning that those depend on government programs may not get their checks if the government defaults.. >> i don't believe there is a realization that this is real money. one of the basic prerequisites is paying from the government. there's not a commercial check that can be stopped. >> this is the united states of america. we write 80 million checks a month. there are millions and millions of americans that depend on those checks coming on time. >> reporter: that number from the treasury secretary is just what the treasury hands out. the real number of electronic payments and checks issued every month by the federal government is 212 million. businesses making emergency plans and wall street's ceo isn't a letter yesterday to the white house and to congress warning them that any default can be catastrophic for businesses and the marble. in less than two hours, president obama and top executives from the auto industry are announcing new fuel standards for cars and trucks. it's the result of a compromise to slash the amount of gasoline new vehicles will need. it doubles the current mileage to 54 miles per gallon. the white house says it will cut down on sumption and create jobs. red skins training camp is officially underway. they took the field for the first time today. it's going to be a hot one too. >> there are plenty of trainers keeping an eye on the players. what about the fans? camp is open to the public tomorrow. dave ross has some important advice for us. >> reporter: good morning. you're so correct. they always have people out here tending to the players. that's a very good thing because it's going to be about 100 degrees. and today's practice is closed to the general national but starting tomorrow, the next 1 practices will be open for the public. they come at about 6:00 in the morning. sometimes they are standing for hours. how can they stay hydrated in the hot temperatures? helping us find the answers to that is lisa reed. she's a personal trainer. you've also been a strength and conditioning coast for the naval academy and the university of florida. so you're a well versed in this area. >> they have to stay hydrated. so drinking plenty of fluids and water, you're going to excessively sweat. standing there as a fan or football player. make sure you're replacing the sweat. >> reporter: you talked about nutrition. not just liquid, but maybe your breakfast. what are some tips to look for? >> fans come out here for hours. they make sure they reflownish. have a good energy breakfast. drink water before you get here so you're already hydrated. it's making sure you have to be prepared opinion. >> reporter: is there anything they should avoid? >> yes. you shouldn't have sugary drinks and alcohol. sport drinks are key. water as well. make sure they wear light- colored clothing. >> a lot of people need their morning coffee and stand out here for five hours. is that okay? (announcer) 28 delicious flavors at around 100 calories each. welcome back. a started as a challenge a dozen years ago, and jeff and spencer will accomplish their goal visiting every nba arena and every major league baseball park in the country. their journeys are detailed in his new book. it offers tips on how to customize your own relationships. this is such a great idea. you're here in town. this is your last stop. i was reading a little bit of the book. this is something that came out of a cold night north of chicago. this just kind of came to you. explain that. >> it start as a way for a single dad to have a relationship with a teen. it takes the common road trip up to a whole new level by turning it into a family adventure. it lasts forever. >> there are a lot of families that do take road trips, but how is this different you feel than just a regular road trip to the park or whatever. how is this different? >> it involves a lot of time that the family spends together through the various stages of planning and living a relationship over and over again after its completed. the key is finding a common interest. it can be anything. it begins in the early stages by coming up with a name for the trip and coming up with destinations and maybe play lists for the car. all sorts of things that broaden out the road trip into making it a full blown relationship. >> this started when you were 7 years old. you're now 18 and getting ready to go away to college. >> we use these as vacations. it was whatever break we were on. by the end of it, we're on the road a lot. there's a lot of communication and talking going on. >> so at what point did you realize you could do this? that's quite a bit of planning. it takes money as well. what's your advice to folks that want to do with with thinker children and still keep it in the budget? >> the great thing about a relationship is that the most important commodity is time. and it's creativity. so if you spread it out over the course of the time you plan on spending the relationship. it's filled with dozens and dozens of ways in which is to use the ideas we stumbled upon and customize them to your own family situation. >> you feel like this shaped your life in a way that maybe some of your friends didn't get this kind of experience. >> it certainly shaped something. in the next month, i go off to college and will be studying sports communication. i'm pretty sure it had something to do with it. >> any other advice for parents trying to get started in this and just get going? >> i think you need to start slow. pick up maybe a couple of ideas that you have incorporated into your family travel and begin to use those to build out some of the family trips to become these full blown adventures as spencer and i had the privilege of enjoying. >> we want to relate people know, it's called relationtrips. you're going to be at a book signing. 2 to 4 p.m. this is in alexandria. >> both going to be there. sharing lots of ideas. if i want to come in and talk to us about a trip you're planning, we'll also throw out some ideas. >> you'll be pressure off that. >> special sharing with you. thank you for coming in. >> back to you. >> hiker on the appalachian trail rely heavily on outpost to get food and gear. the post office is closing some parts. some as part of the plans to shut down thousands of post offices. three in particular would make it harder for hikers. the post office in glen cliff and one in maine. all make it easier for hikers to get food and dry clothes. the walk from georgia to maine takes about 5 months. there could be relief on the way for texas. but the relief is coming in the form of a tropical storm. how areas along the texas coast are preparing this morning. ♪ [ female announcer ] sweet honey taste. 80 calories per serving. 40% daily value of fiber. i'm here in the downtown area where the crowd is growing. units saying he confessed. we're learning more about the suspect this morning and what led authorities to him. van goodwin is live. >> reporter: good morning. investigators in this case are describing the suspect as a very dangerous individual. 21-year-old army private first class naser abdo is accused of planning an attack at fort hood. he joined the army in 2009, but months later, he wanted a discharge as a conscious objector. he said being a soldier conflicted with his muslim beliefs. his discharge was granted in may, but it was upheld after child porn was found on his government-issued computer that he used at fort campbell, kentucky. on the 4th of july, he went awall. at he planned to use the attack was purr which is ad at the gun shop where nadal hasan bought his weapons prior to the 2009 shooting rampage here. when he went to the gun shop this past tuesday, an employee thought he looked suspicious and called police. he was arrested wednesday at a motel room. investigators say he had a stash of weapons and explosive material. here's what the police chief had to say about this case. we would probably be here today given you a driven briefing he had not been stopped. >> reporter: the army said he has confessed to plotting the terror attack. he's currently being held in jail in the city of colleen. >> thank you soft for that report. tropical storm don is moving closer classmate. 17-year-old jacquelyn was in a car with two other teens when the driver lost control and hit a tree. she was pronounced dead at the scene. a young man in the car remains in the trauma unit. the driver had only minor injuries. an emergency call about a gas leak now a murder investigation. firefighters showed up all the an apartment complex and found the body of a woman inside. we have the latest on this. >> reporter: the investigation started around 10:25 in the morning. a neighbor smelled a natural gas odor so they called the fire department. >> they arrived on the scene and got with apartment management to open the apartment and found a deceased female on the flood. >> reporter: police say there was trauma to the body. the smell was not a natural gas leak, but a chemical someone poured inside the apartment to cover up the smell of the dead body. the victim was taken to the medical examiner's office to determine the cause of death. investigators worked the scene inside and out. they took away a dumpster at the location searching for possible evidence connected to the crime. >> our safety is the main concern here. how can we feel safe when stuff like this is happening in this neighborhood. >> for residents in the complex, it's not a comfortable feeling knowing a murder happened nearby. >> i have a son that i have to worry about, so being so close to the site of the incident, it scares me and worries me. >> we know that the victim did not live alone. there were three names on the lease, but those people were not home at the time. investigators are also trying to determine when the woman was last seen alive. the search continues for a man with a blade slashing women while they shop. it's happened five times in the last five months. the first victim is speaking out. this 20-year-old says she was attacked on valentine's day. even though she was visibly pregnant. >> take a good look at that picture. anyone with information is asked to call the police
