Muncie Delaware County weekly COVID-19 update, April 8

This week also marked the end of the state-wide mask mandate. As of April 5, Governor Holcomb’s mask mandate was reduced to an advisory, with county officials in charge of extending the mandate locally. Delaware County’s commissioners this week placed business owners in charge of mask requirements within their facilities. Several businesses have stated masks are still required in their stores. Masks are still required in Delaware County government buildings. Though there is no official county-wide mask mandate, County Commissioner Shannon Henry has advocated for the continuation of masks and social distancing. “It’s the best defense that we have. I will still continue to wear a mask when going out in public, and we still urge everyone to wear masks when they can t socially distance themselves, even without the mandate,” he said. “We want the individual businesses to be able to do what they feel is in the best interest of their employees and patrons.”

Neighborhood COVID vaccine clinics succeed as eligibility opens up

Meridian Health Services had set up the clinic in the church s basement, bringing along about 100 single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccines on March 30. Due to the longevity of any type of COVID-19 vaccine, the goal was distribute them all that day. Within a few hours, the healthcare system was able to do just that. Both Senior Pastor Andrew Draper and Associate Pastor Maria Wilson wanted to bring the vaccine closer to area residents and increase accessibility for all. Wilson, chair of the Mobilizing Muncie health sub-committee, has been working alongside various local health providers, including Meridian, IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital and Open Door Health Services.
