a new the. leads in iowa partial results are announced in the democratic caucus after a day of chaos. and the number of deaths from the coronavirus grows again in china but the world health organization says the a break is no it's a pandemic. well on the eve overvotes expected to acquits the u.s. presidents of his impeachments so will trump has come face to face with democrat souping seeking to i was sent from office has just given his state of the union address in the house of representatives the same chamber which she was impeached last month ahead of the speech there was an awkward moments with house speaker nancy pelosi she appeared to turn away from her she extended her hands policy for your schools of abuse of power and obstruction of congress against him trump. well later nancy pelosi was seen tearing up from speech as soon as the hour and a half long address had wrapped up he made no mention at all of his impeachments during the address and stead trump used his 3rd speech of the union as a rallying cry ahead of the action the speech was titled the great american comeback he concentrated on the economy jobs and health care is if we had and reverse the failed economic policies of the previous administration the world would not now be witnessing this great economic success. and said trump spoke about the us assassination or operating commands or customs or the money he said so the money was targeted because he was planning new attacks against americans. our message to the ters says where you will never escape american justice if you attack our citizens you forfeit your life. and job ross in a surprise guest the venezuelan opposition leader. spoke about its standing in solidarity with the venezuelan people but maduro's grip and theory will be smashed and broken here this evening it's a very brave man who carries with him the hopes dreams and aspirations of all there is whelan's joining us in the gallery is the true and legitimate president of venezuela one glider mr president. well our latin american editor lucien human is in santiago she says gliders trip to the u.s. didn't quite go as planned. certainly it was not expected in fact the invitation to attend the state of the union address wasn't even confirmed until just now until just a very very short time before it actually happened and what is also very notable was the expression on quango why those face he was extremely stern and i would venture to say that the reason is that he has felt snubbed by president trouble up until now remember that there was a highly anticipated meeting that was supposed to take place are expected to take place in florida in miami over the weekend not only that did not take place but president went to his retreat to play golf instead did not have right why they all there did not invite him to the white house and and this certainly was seen as i say as a snub at the same time of course president trump probably did not want to draw too much attention to what has clearly become a foreign policy failure at least so far with regard to venezuela so at least one guy they all can go home and it's expected he will go do that very very shortly with this invitation under his sleeves. will are complete his correspondent kimberly hall could says live for us at capitol hill kimberly there was a lot of domestic focus in that speech but trouble also managed to highlight aides some of his accomplishments only in sanaa tional stage particular attention to his proposal for settlements in the middle east. i'm having a little bit of difficulty hearing you but i did want to touch on some of the important points about the president's speech with regard to foreign policy. president certainly tried to tout some of what he sees as his foreign policy successes the fact that he believes he has not only rebuild the military but this is allowed him to in fact. tout the success of in his view the killing of the ice a leader abu bakar al baghdadi also the iranian general sola mani this is also something that he tried to highlight the controversy all nature of his mideast peace plan but at the same time saying that this is something difficult that he has put forward but needed to be done. last week i announced a groundbreaking plan for peace between israel and the palestinians recognizing that all past attempts of we must be determined and creative in order to stabilize the region to give millions of young people the chance to realize a better future. for the whole talking about some of the the incidental focus of speech now christian whitmer develops the democratic policy rebuttal to president trump state of the union she's the governor of michigan a key swing states in the upcoming presidential election and her speech she criticized his handling of the economy doesn't matter what the president says about the stock market what matters is that millions of people struggle to get by or don't have enough money at the end of the month after paying for transportation student loans or prescription drugs american workers are hurting in my own state our neighbors in wisconsin and ohio pennsylvania and all over the country wages have stagnated while c.e.o. pay has skyrocketed. so when the president says the economy is strong my question is strong for hope well with the senate expected to acquit trump in the impeachment trial but might also asked americans to judge senators on what they do as we witness the impeachment process in washington there are some things each of us no matter our party should demand the truth matters facts matter and no one should be above the law it's not what those senators say tomorrow it's about what they do that matters let's turn to other news known authorities in the chinese city who hunt say they're converting an additional 8 buildings into hospitals to treat $10000.00 patients suspected of having corona virus at least $490.00 people have died in china and in the 2500s are now infected that includes 10 cases on a cruise ship and they're locked in japan a 2nd cruise ship that was dies entry in taiwan has no i don't see in hong kong well there are fears that the corona virus q. calls the toy to resume industry more than a $1000000000.00 china is thailand's biggest source of foreign to your wrists but numbers are down i have to 80 percent since the outbreak began well spencer like say brian in bangkok shortly but 1st her reports. 8 times a day at the mekong railway markets vendors move their way. and clear the tracks to make way for the train. it's hot and bustling highlight with tourists even in the middle of the coronavirus crisis. and we always like ours by hours like we are we aware of where. this. crowded my area is china is thailand's biggest source of foreign tourists with about $2000000.00 visitors a year and they bring plenty of money with them but last month chinese $2.00 groups from traveling overseas and put a number of cities in lockdown to control the spread of infection this floating on the outskirts of bangkok with tourists from all over the world including china it's much. higher in the colony and these bandits here rely on terrorism. more than a $1000000000.00. everyone he has affected. with the changing but chinese tourists by 90 percent the numbers stop dropping a few days ago look at a state of usually. packed with chinese tourists along the coast thailand's famous speeches a ghost towns hotels are out and someone may need to be laid off. you know if things don't improve soon because i have expenses to pay i need to pay rent and support my children so it's very difficult for me the ripple effects of the virus are expected to last for. long for example it's going to drag longer you know virus could spread worldwide and stop tourism sector the economy would fall into a slowdown below 2 percent in the 2nd half of the year this is imperative we get it's going to just to resume say they're not as exports that they're basically that's going to hear the mystique a lot of the time and back at the railway market the trains just pass through again the stalls are getting back to business meaning here hope life will return to normal just as quickly. well as cross live tonight. alexey o'brien joins us now lexi i visible is the drop in visitors. incredibly visible here at the carillon trying to right in the middle of bangkok's main shopping district and normally at this time of day as chinese told us around the corner they would be lots of visitors behind me people coming to make offerings for good luck and for protection but as you can see there are very few people here that a yemeni all wearing masks to protect themselves from the virus and this is something that's big same across the city and it could last for months forests here have told us they will sell them for a little late to the day he told us that they have had a truck and saved from the business by about 60 percent and that's really hitting them in the pocket and one of the top government been saying about the situation. well actually i'm just going to draw your attention to a sign that's just above me on one of the big bowls here it says in mandarin and tie and in english our hot still hot and that's because thailand has a very close relationship with china there it makes it just like this across bangkok and across the country messages of solidarity with the people of china and the public health minister told me just the other day that he believes that close relationship with china means that up to this crisis is. the chinese tourists will return but some people here don't actually want those visitors because 3 of the thais who have contracted the virus have bought it because of their close interactions with chinese tourists thailand of course has the highest number of confirmed cases outside of china 25 of them that number could increase because on tuesday night not a lot came back from mohan carrying 138 type people from the a.p. same to of that virus they did undergo medical checks before they got on the plane but now under quarantine for the next 14 days so it is a bit of a white and see here some analysts are also warning that china might also move to stimulate its economy because of course it's feeling the effects of this virus and try and push to make stick tourism keep all travelers inside the country spending their money here so the impact all the lack of chinese tourists could be felt not just here in thailand but across the region ok lexie brian reporting live there from bangkok for night thank you very much. more still to come here on al-jazeera including. malawi's opposition celebrates some of the record rules that last year's election was rigged doesn't stunt. her. once again welcome to look at the international focus is a looking pretty quiet across the middle east at the moment look further north i've got lots of cloud that's just piling it's way out sifts move out of the way here you can see some very choppy waters through that eastern side of the mediterranean sea grace turkey cyprus seeing some very wet some very windy and at times some wintry weather over the next day also in that will gradually ease over towards the levant as we push on through the remainder of this week so that's. the same for what's going to coming through as we go on through the weekend ahead of that is not a bad at all you might just catch your chance to central parts of saudi arabia calm without the possibility of the odd chance of central and southern areas of the red sea and across the red sea as well you might get the odd shower little puffs of cloud there coming into the west the weather is going to be across central parts of africa through the tropics as a ship basis and big downpours there possibility into uganda maybe western parts of kenya could see some ladish as northern areas of tanzania certainly with a chance of seeing some a rather lively showers a nice shower stretch all the way across into angola still a child so they are shown to the northern parts of madagascar over the next couple of days to the south that is slightly dry. but the big stories generally found lying media angles in this story are too numerous for conflict with different angles from different perspectives things never really being believed the prey to the war to even separate the screen from the facts the misinformation from john so this is clear and sounds to. hear people's think that we are listening post on al-jazeera. this is al jazeera quicken one of the headlines this hour on the eve of a vote expected to acquits the u.s. president of his impeachment donald trump has given his 3rd state of the union address and he's the occasion to drum up support ahead of the end of amber election concentrating on the economy jobs and health care well he made no mention of his impeachment there were several of movements between trump and house speaker nancy pelosi she was seen tearing up a copy of trump's speech saying see it finished. of more on the top story we're joined again by jared plummer he's a democratic strategist and is in washington d. c. at jericho as we saw there nancy pelosi didn't appear to think much of that speech about you what did you make of trump's 3rd state of the union. well 1st thank you thanks again for having me what i would say is you know for this to be think as many democrats like myself expect to be president trump's last state of the union it was dark at times it was bizarre moments. it was also you know i think in many ways unprecedented you saw g.o.p. members of congress chanting 4 more years during the president's speech you saw members of congress walk out you also saw the president exploit i think this moment in a very incoherent way in terms of those americans that he highlighted while there were really really compelling stories and i think you saw bipartisan support for those stories whether it was the african-american mother with a child who received a scholarship or the touching moment when. the the marine came home to his wife you know i think there was those moments that were really really fascinating but i think on the whole what you see with this particular union as you do with often is you often see excuse me with the state of the union is that there may be a slight bump but overall generally you know it doesn't really change the dynamic i think because you highlight those guests and that is interesting because they were almost made for t.v. moments the touching. of the family and the young girl and her mother who were no going to be able to go to school and all these these wonderful moments it's a lot of worry that by tearing that speech up in front of that large large audience that the democrats will come across as being disrespectful to the invited gay it's disrespectful to the the ordinary american chose to highlight in that speech. you know that's interesting point what i would say is here in the u.s. whenever the president is invited to speak in the well of the house he's invited by the speaker of the house and if you notice at the very beginning. the president did not extend his hand to speaker pelosi which is very disrespectful and so i think after a speech in which the president 1st started off by not even extending his hand to the speaker in which he really i think went to a dark place and tried as he has done for and you know really tried not to unite america but i think really so even for the division i'm not surprised that is how the speaker responded again if you looked at the faces of members of congress there were audible groans turn certain parts and i also think it's really important to recognize that even though the president highlighted these compelling stories of americans he also did it while you know distorting the facts while trying to take credit for things that either not true or that he did not have any hand in and so i think we have to look at it in totality which is really really important given the context in which we're operating ok well the focus speech was very much on the election that just quickly if you will do you think that the democrats are ready for this election quickly if you don't mind. yeah here's what i would say is that president shrum definitely foreshadowed what he's going to be highlighting during this election season and i think as we saw in 2016 it's going to be unconventional and so whoever the nominee is is going to have to be prepared to deal with the presidential power that trump is willing and i think what we saw tonight we'll see for the next 9 months here in the u.s. ok let's look forward to that thank you very much it's a different form of there joining us live from washington d.c. good to have you with us thank you for having. well same with u.s. politics the democratic party has apologized after technical delays meant at 2nd was 24 hours for partial results for the iowa caucuses c b released. marginally ahead of bernie sanders of the both are claiming victory ellen fisher reports from des moines. for the democratic campaigns iowa is already in the rearview mirror they have moved on there in new hampshire the next step in this process no fool results from iowa no problem. each candidate is telling everyone what a huge success they've been even if it looks like they've struggled where it. is a good. thing going to. really be going well. in des moines an apology from the democratic party chairman that the system to count votes at the caucuses failed so spectacularly but he insists the results no being published can be trusted we have been working day and night to make sure that these results are accurate the one thing i will say is that the underlying data the raw data is secure it was always secure conspiracy theorists online are suggesting the result is being manipulated that's not something bernie sanders is buying into you know there's no excuse for not having results but it's like but that doesn't mean to say but the votes at the polls like comment will be adequate and i think that's an unfair i think to try to get the youngest candidate in the race former mayor people to judge is performing ahead of predictions and expectations but he's already looking forward to a similar result in new hampshire this weekend or this tuesday this is we get to this new hampshire just 4 decision. i have never been more times in our campaign you know our team and this is the process is the failure and i want to deliver results quickly and clearly has amplified calls to drop the state as the 1st in the nation to vote in the presidential process but one experience political observer says there's no obvious solution that doesn't mean that they rest of the nation will come up with the alternative that everybody can agree on new hampshire has a primary so that straight up election style voting the next state to hold a caucus is nevada later this month the democratic party there has already said it won't be using the system they used here in iowa. al-jazeera the morning. draft wording for a u.n.
