themselves and their lives on the line for the water supply of the midwest of the united states, for their own communities, for the environment, it showed that we can put it all on the line and we can demand really big things, and we can really change the conversation in the united states. and anybody can do that. it doesn't matter how much money you've got. it doesn't matter what background you come from. everybody can do something, and i kind of went back home and i looked back at what i could do. we hadn't had a primary election in 14 years. i felt like our community deserved to have that conversation. so we launched the race. >> you mentioned the word community. i want to bring this up and have you offer the explanation for what i read. there was criticism of your identity as a bronx girl. talk about what happened. >> i love it. this is the story that i campaigned on. the story that i campaigned on was that i was born in a zip code where people do not have the same opportunity. and my parents had to scrub
