Doom Discussion May 2021: Uncomfortable Truths By Talgrath on May 9, 2021, 7:54pm PDT 5 Follow Sounder At Heart on Twitter Like Sounder At Heart Facebook Uncomfortable Truths About the Whole Super League Fiasco We've all been having a good, hearty chuckle at the Super League fiasco, from Manchester United fans storming the field, to founder Andrea Agnelli immediately admitting defeat, fines for clubs that participated and talk of removing points from the offending teams too. The fallout is almost certainly just beginning and you know we should really just have a hearty laugh and move on...but...there's just one problem, the idea started here in the US. Remember the Campeones Cup? How about the Leagues Cup? Two tournaments exclusively between MLS and Liga MX teams, the two biggest leagues on the continent; two tournaments in which nobody else gets invited except teams from the most moneyed leagues. Sure, these two tournaments are basically just exhibition tournaments and they don't really "matter" in the ways most people think of soccer matches matter, but then again neither did the Super League. Ultimately the Super League was basically going to be a series of exhibition matches, it would not have mattered on the league tables, it would not have gotten any teams into Champions League, it was just more games on your TV. Sure, teams like Manchester United or Real Madrid didn't get approval from UEFA and the MLS and LIga MX did from CONCACAF, but if the approval of some men in suits is all you need to make you go along with an idea then what's to stop teams from forming North American Super League?
