For most of his life, he walked the regulation two paces behind his wife. He smiled, shook hands, and occasionally made one of those “foot-in-mouth” remarks for which he was famous. He could be arrogant, blunt and tactless, as well as charming, well-informed and amazingly energetic.
Through it all, through 74 years of marriage to the Queen, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was her greatest defender, a tower of strength on whom she could invariably depend.
