Newsrooms are offering on-demand access to therapy and mandating that staffers take vacation. Burnout is particularly pronounced for journalists from underrepresented groups. For many media organizations, the ideas that other industries have recently introduced to remedy burnout — like a four-day workweek or offering the entire staff a paid week off — might seem impossible to implement, given that the news cycle never switches off. Erin Millar, the chief executive and founder of the Canadian digital publisher Discourse Media, did it anyway.
