everyone. thank you for joining us. we begin with several developments in the race for president including senator bernie sanders fighting back. >> he's facing some tough talk from union workers in nevada over his health care plan and meanwhile former mayor michael bloomberg is addressing questions of the stop and frisk policy he once supported as well as critic who claim he's trying to buy the election. >> this morning, days after getting the presidential medal of freedom rush limbaugh is making headlines for what he said about mayor pete buttigieg and his husband. andrew dymburt has the latest from washington. andrew, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, really after new hampshire, three candidates have a full head of steam moving forward but this is still anyone's race and now candidates have over a week to campaign until their next contest. after the new hampshire primary it's bernie sanders leading the democratic pack by a hair. but ahead of the nevada caucuses the culinary union, one of the most influential voting groups in the state, launched a campaign against him saying he wants to end health care for workers. >> in fact, many of the unions are strongly supporting of the medicare for all single pay system. >> reporter: mayor pete buttigieg who came in second in new hampshire and claimed his own victory in iowa is sharpening his attacks on sanders. >> i don't think that even progressives really want to be in a world where we can't keep our promises. >> reporter: as others attack him, controversial right wing radio host and recent medal of freedom recipient rush limbaugh fired off anti-gay comments targeting the mayor. >> a gay guy, 37 years old, loves kissing his husband on debate stages. can you see trump have fun with that? >> reporter: back on the trail amy klobuchar who placed a surprising third in new hampshire is reintroducing herself to voters. >> hello, america. >> reporter: waiting in the wings billionaire and former new new york city mayor michael bloomberg shaking up the race while shaking off criticism. >> what do you say to democrats who say you're trying to buy the election? >> i'm not trying to buy the election. we've been at this for ten weeks and the best way to communicate in ten weeks is through something like mass media, through television and social media. >> reporter: and next up for these candidates are the nevada caucuses in a little over a week. now, democratic leaders there say they have been working around the clock to make sure that they avoid any of the issues we saw in the iowa caucuses. kenneth, kimberly. >> all right, andrew dymburt there, thank you. the senate is expected to approve a bill today limiting president trump's authority to take military action against iran. eight republican senators are joining democrats to support the measure. it follows the recent u.s. drone strike that killed a top iranian general without congressional approval. the president is expected to veto the bill and without enough votes to override his veto, the senate decision would only be symbolic. attorney general william barr agreed to testify before a house committee next month amid allegations of political interference in the case against trump adviser roger stone. the president praised barr after the justice department overruled the sentencing recommendation of the team that prosecuted stone saying the recommendation was too harsh. four prosecutors quit the case in protest. the president says they should go back to school. >> i want to thank the justice department for seeing this horrible thing, and i didn't speak to them, by the way, just so you understand. they saw the horribleness of a nine-year sentence for doing nothing. >> some are criticizing the president's actions and senator susan collins said he, quote, should not have gotten involved and senator lisa murkowski said the president should not be determining sentences. police in south carolina are asking for help identifying any vehicles seen near the home of 6-year-old faye swetlik who has been missing since monday and released new pictures of cars in the area and they're going door to door looking for surveillance footage. they have also released video showing faye getting off the school bus later seen in her yard a short time later. we turn to a growing debate in schools across the country. are transgender women athletes getting an unfair advantage because they were born male? >> some female track athletes are now filing a lawsuit bringing that debate to court. this morning a group of high school athletes in connecticut have filed a federal lawsuit seeking to stop transgender athletes from competing in girls sports. >> we've missed out on medals and opportunities to compete. >> reporter: the athletes described the state's policy as biological unfairness and say allowing athletes with male anatomy to compete has deprived them of track titles. >> because of the regressive policy two male athletes have dominated the girls field. >> reporter: the athletes filing the lawsuit have competed against terry miller and andraya yearwood. two transgender girls who won a combined 15 state championship races in connecticut. yearwood and miller now seniors in high school spoke with "good morning america" back in 2018. >> at what point do you decide actually it's more appropriate for me to be on the girls team and competing with other girls? >> i decided that the summer before ninth grade. >> i'm talking about raising a child for life and so is it fair that that child is excluded? is it fair that child doesn't have a place to belong? >> it allows her to be where she wants to be and that has more weight than winning a medal. >> reporter: connecticut's high school athletic association says its current policy is appropriate under both state and federal law. those rules vary from state to state. in seven states not including connecticut, students must play on the team that matches their birth certificate or they must undergo surgery or have hormone therapy. a ban in the works stopping transgender women from participating in female sports including at state colleges and universities. current ncaa allow transgender athletes to participate in sports that align with their gender identity but transgender women must undergo testosterone suppression therapy for one year before competing. this morning, yearwood and miller are defending their right to run in girls events. miller writing, i participate in athletics just like my peers and want to excel, find community and meaning in my life. it is both unfair and painful my victories have to be attacked and hard work ignored but others taking a different view. >> now when we line up in front of our blocks and the starter calls us to get into position, we all know how the race will end. >> those athletes are suing for an injunction to stop the current policy. state officials say they'll respond once they finish reviewing the lawsuit. two football players at ohio state university have been kicked off the team after being charged with sexual assault and kidnapping. amir riep and jahsen wint are expected to be arraigned today. the alleged encounter happened at the apartment the players shared. authorities say riep told the woman to say it was consensual. checking the weather, bitter cold, snowy conditions are gripping the plains and midwest. a school bus lost control in kansas flipping on its side. only minor injuries were reported. farther north parts of the dakotas looked like a frozen tundra. look at that. in minnesota crews had to fight the wind and cold while fighting this house fire on a lake and right now the chicago area is bracing for up to five inches of snow. let's take a look at your thursday forecast. good morning. we're tracking a wet day across the northeast as this storm is moving on through bringing rain and warm weather along the coast into new england where it's colder. snow showers, three to six inches of accumulation expected. certainly enough to slow down traffic. into the southeast another day with some showers and storms. this front pushing them to the coast so that means we get a chance to dry up across the mississippi river valley. trade-off is we're turning much colder. into the dakotas this morning accuweather real feel temperatures only in the single digits. i'm accuweather meteorologist adam del rosso. coming up, something you never want to see at a fast food restaurant. but first the crisis on this cruise ship getting even worse today as more cases of coronavirus are confirmed overnight. plus, a major wipeout. the big scare at this surfing competition. and later we hear from the driver who survived this beam crashing through his windshield. a surf competition in a surf competition in portugal went terribly wrong for one contestant. you see there on a jet ski was rushing to help after a surfer got caught up in a series of giant swells. but another giant wave tossed both of them into the air. the surfer was knocked unconscious, but he is now recovering. and closer to home a wild scene outside miami. a good samaritan jumped into action to help this man escape from his burning truck after a crash. he helped pull the man out. he suffered some burns, but he's okay. a hockey player's medical scare was apparently worse than originally thought. jay bouwmeester of the st. louis blues collapsed during a game and the team said it was a cardiac episode but this morning the team says he had to be revived with a defibrillator. he is now recovering well and reportedly doing well after that scary incident. 44 additional cases of the new coronavirus have been confirmed on that cruise ship off the coast of japan. that brings the total to more than 170 cases on the "diamond princess." officials say passengers will soon be able to leave the ship and continue their quarantine at a facility on land. and here at home a 14th case has been confirmed in the u.s. the patient was quarantined at a military base in california, but health officials say there is no indication that the virus is spreading from person to person at the base. and meanwhile, more reports of racial profiling are coming to light. one arizona student says she was a victim. >> like the minute i sat down, i could tell they started getting tense. they started whispering, they started looking at me and within like three to five minutes, they quickly gathered their stuff and left. >> that arizona student says she gets rude glances when she coughs. meanwhile, back in china doctors unable to get their hands on masks are now using diapers to cover their faces. some workers at a wendy's in michigan have been fired after video showed a man taking a bath in the sink of the restaurant's kitchen. the faces are blacked out. but you can see a shirtless man scrubbing himself saying it feels like a hot tub. the company called it unacceptable. and a kansas man is looking for love and he's willing to pay $25,000 to find it. jeff gephardt has launched a website to find a girlfriend and is offering to pay $25,000 to anyone who accused of running a sex cult at his daughter's college. >> yeah, he's pleaded not guilty but as prosecutors build their case, many are wondering what the college knew and when. this morning a father behind bars accused of forcing some of his daughter's college friends into a sex cult. according to the indictment, lawrence ray moved into his daughter's on campus housing at the prestigious sarah lawrence college north of new york city in 2010. prosecutors say he befriended her roommates, some still teenagers, and began so-called therapy sessions with them learning intimate details of their lives, they say grooming them before moving some of them into a new york city apartment all while allegedly subjecting them to physical, psychological and sexual abuse. ray has pleaded not guilty to nine criminal counts including sex trafficking, extortion and forced labor. >> there's no knowing the amount of damage he may have caused them in the years to come. >> reporter: prosecutors claim ray extorted about $1 million from his victims threatening them, depriving them of food and sleep, taking explicit photos of them and in one case even allegedly prostituting one of them for cash. abc news spoke to one of ray's alleged victims last year. >> he put me in a lot of situations that involved being sexual in ways that i wouldn't have chosen. >> the allegations against ray were first outlined in a "new york" magazine last spring. in the article, desperate parents say they reached out to the university and to authorities for help. >> they were told that these children were actually over 18 and were living with larry, you know, of their own volition. other parents approached administrators at the college but were told that, you know, larry was the parent of someone living at the school, so they couldn't really tell him to leave. >> reporter: but in a statement obtained by abc news, the college president says no one reported that ray was living with his daughter adding, perhaps because the apartment in question was a small town house with its own entrance, students in other housing would not necessarily have been aware of the presence of this student's father. ray is held without bail, and he's due back in court later this month. police near detroit have released video of a boy who nearly drowned in a hotel swimming pool. officers say it's a reminder of how quickly things can turn tragic. in the video you can see the 2-year-old struggling to stay afloat. within moments he sinks to the bottom. he was underwater for four minutes until a girl sees him and shows her godmother. she jumps in and pulls him out. thankfully the hotel was hosting a nurse's convention, and two nurses gave him cpr. he is okay this morning. his mother could face charges. a michigan man says he was bracing to die as this steel beam came crashing through his windshield. the six-foot beam flew off a truck on the highway and nearly impaled him but it was stopped by the steering wheel just inches from the driver's chest. he walked away with only a scratch. and in sports a big change to the rules in major league baseball. pitchers will now be required to face a minimum of three batters before coaches can remove them. it eliminates a strategy used by teams when a pitcher with a specific skill is used for just one batter. playing golf on a regular basis can do more than just
