A considerable step up in competition exposed the No. 16 Virginia men's basketball team as deficient in areas that have been staples under Coach Tony Bennett, who spent much of Saturday's 98-75 drubbing against No. 1 Gonzaga with hands on hips, incredulous to what was unfolding at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
Among the most alarming failures was permitting the Bulldogs to shoot 60.3 percent as the Cavaliers (4-2) gave up by far their most points of the young season. No opponent had shot that well against Virginia, typically a defensive juggernaut, since 2008 - one season before Bennett took over.
