i m jenna wolf. it feels for us like we ve been covering this amanda knox case forever. you can only imagine how amanda feels as she s getting closer to a verdict in her appeals case. they could have a decision as early as next week. is she a murderer, or was she wrongly convicted of killing her british roommate? closing arguments, we re hearing one side of the story, and now the other side. her defense later this week, and we ll have the latest in a live report just ahead. we re also following another major criminal trial. the case against dr. conrad murray. he is accused of giving michael jackson a fatal dose of a powerful anesthetic back in 2009. opening statements begin tuesday in california, and we ll have a preview. we re going to call it the real lives of soap opera stars. the drama, the plot twists and all the surprises. a new reality show is taking us behind the scenes so show what life is really like for our favorite actresses and actors. that s ahead. are you a soap guy? no. never watched soaps? well, not that i would admit on national tv. okay. i don t believe that for one second. you seem like the guy that can get wrapped up in other people s dramatic storylines. just saying. there s not many of them left, actually. we ll have that and a lot more coming up and maybe my admission to watching soaps. we ll begin with politics and the huge surprise in the gop s bid to replace president obama next year. saturday a new straw poll in florida surprised just about everyone showing businessman herman cain ahead of the pack and by a wide margin. mike at the white house with more. good morning, lester. herman cain has never won elective office. he has to be considered a long shot. before this poll he was in fifth or sixth place, and most other polls, polling at 5% or%. most of the attention this morning is on rick perry, the governor of texas. the favorite going into the straw poll and now he and everybody else got crushed by herman cain in florida. reporter: with more riding on the result than any other candidate, in the morning rick perry made one last appeal to straw poll voters in florida. what americans are looking for isn t the slickest candidate. they re looking for an authentic prip principled leader. reporter: party activists had handed perry a stunning defeat, choosing former pizza company executive herman cain who won by a whopping 22%. send washington a message! reporter: before the straw poll perry had been damaged by hits from conservative rivals. most recently in a debate on fox news channel. on allowing in-state tuition rates at texas colleges to children of illegal immigrants. i would not loum taxpayer funded benefits for illegal aliens or for their children. reporter: a victory in florida was considered important for perry s chances. if governor perry should lose down there in florida, i think it would be a real problem for him. reporter: perry s chief rival, mitt romney, did not campaign at the straw poll. instead, spending saturday in his birthplace, michigan. nice to meet you, john. i bet you remember my dad, don t you? yes, i do. reporter: analysts say the surprise result means gop voters could be sending a signal. so there s so many republican primary voters in the key states still looking for somebody for another choice. somebody shaets not mitt romney and rick perry, and that means there s an opening for someone else to come in. reporter: a wild card in the race, more washington dysfunction. even as disaster victims still struggle to recover, the agency that aids them, fema, is now caught in a partisan funding fight. unless congress can agree, funds run out at midweek. the larger government wide shutdown is looming friday. analysts say the gridlock could hurt republicans next year. should the republican party once it has a nominee, will it be a party that can still win the middle, take independent voters away from president obama, keep the majority in the congress, and also win the white house in fall of 2012. cain won that by 22 points. he had 37%. rick perry, 15%. mitt romney, won behind that in the florida straw poll at 14%, and one other surprise here, lester, michelle bachmann who at one time had won the ames, iowa, straw poll not that long ago. only 1.5% in florida. lester. mike, thanks. david gregory is moderator of nbc s meet the press. nice to be here. is cain a viable candidate, or is there a message being sent? a couple of things. no, i don t think he is a viable candidate. he may stay in the race. he has money to be able to do that, and he has a message. and, you know, being from atlanta, he is going to have some supporters in florida. look, there is still an unsettled picture on the republican side. there is a lot of energy behind the idea of somebody else getting into the race. all the while we re focus odd two early front runners. that s perry and romney. perry can t downplay this. he said florida is important. it has the history of picking future events for republican nominees. what position is he in? i don t think the florida straw poll carries the kind of weight that even the iowa straw poll does. i think perry is in a mode right now where he is working on fundraising, which is an area of strength for him, and there s a lot of blocking and tackling to be done in a state like florida, which even in the primaries is going to be very, very important once you get through the early voting among republican primaries. then as we look, of course, to the general election, to the idea that president obama is vulnerable there i think has been well established. you mentioned romney a moment ago. a lot of analysts are saying romney is the guy that really did well in florida here. he came in third just behind perry. didn t really campaign there. where does this leave him? look, he is still somebody to watch very, very closely. you know, all the establishment figures i talked to in the republican party say when you have run for president before, there is no better experience, and he is showing that. he has been good in the debate. he is raising a lot of money. he has stayed below the radar. now he is getting aggressive with rick perry. he should not be discounted. all the way along as a strong frontrunner or number two. the point is he is going to be a guy to beat. auz note, some see an opening. chris christie, on threat of suicide, he is not going to run. he is apparently being recruit bid big money done ors here in the northeast and is said to be considering, according to politico, may make a decision in the coming week. is he being polite to those donors, or could he become the person that many in the party are looking for? i think it s probably both. i mean, he has got to be incredibly flattered on the one hand. it s an intoxicating feeling when people are saying, come on, you re the savior. you ve got to get in. i think there s another element to this calculation. there s a new feeling both now as opposed when he dismissed the prospect of getting in the race that president obama is more vulnerable? sometimes the shot is now, and he may be recalculating based on that. you have benjamin netanyahu on the show a bit later on. difficult week for him. difficult week for the president with this palestinian call for statehood and membership in the u.n. how did they all thread the needle? a couple of big issues. are we facing another round of violence in the middle east. this statehood push by the mrindz is not going anywhere, but the consequences of it failing could really mean violence in the streets in the middle east, and how israel and the israeli leader deals with israel s isolation, which is unprecedented right now in the middle east is something we ll discuss. look, the other issue is that this is now fodder for the presidential race. the criticism of president obama s handling of israel, rick perry s credit simple. this is somehow becoming a much more partisan issue than it ever has heretofore, and that s potentially dangerous for israel. david gregory, good to see you here in new york. thanks. zirchgs and now here s jenna. all right, lester. thanks. now to the homecoming for the two american hikers released from iranian prison earlier this week. ron allen is live at kennedy airport in new york city waiting for their arrival. ron, good morning. good morning. we expect josh fatal and shane bauer back home. it will be the first time on american soil in two years. they were charged with spying. they have been sentenced to eight years so they are fortunate to be getting out relatively soon. they re being accompanied by their families. they re also accompanied by sarah shourd, who you ll recall was the third member of that group of hikers charged with espionage. here s some of what the two men had to say after they were released late last week. getting off the plane that brought us here three days ago was the most incredible experiences of our lives. we will never forget the excitement of seeing our loved ones waiting for us at the foot of the plane. the joy of embracing them all after so long will stay with us forever. just hours after we left prison, we were able to swim in the calm waters in the gulf. we stayed up all night with our loved ones and we watched the most beautiful sunset we ve ever seen. and just after they were released shane bauer proposed to shaara shourd. you may recall that he slipped an engagement ring on her finger made of string. now fattal will be the best man. overall, they ve said very little about what happened to them while they were in prison. we understand that they said that the conditions were overall pretty bad, but interestingly, the food was good. they re going to have a press conference later this afternoon. no questions, we understand, but, again, they re just trying to be tight-lipped and try to reorient themselves to american society. they re no doubt being debriefed by american officials as they try to get over this and get on with the rest of their lives. jenna. i smell a made for tv movie. ron allen. ron, thank you very much. now for a check of the morning s other top stories. let s go to melissa francis at the news desk. let s say good morning. good morning, guys. good morning, every. a mill yore air developer who lived in the same central florida neighborhood as tiger woods was convicted saturday of murdering his wife in their mansion. nbc s janet shamlyan has the story from orlando. reporter: in an emotion-packed trial bob ward was stoic as the jury was read. we the jury find the defendant guilty. reporter: a verdict finding him guilty rsh his two daughters in the courtroom. both woman crying and upset. the jury having found you guilty reporter: it had been called a murder motivated by money. diane ward was found dead in the couple s lav irk homes just days before she was expected to testify in a deposition related to her husband s bankruptcy. on the day she died in between ward told a 911 dispatcher he shot his wife. the call played during the trial. i just shot my wife. you just what? i just shot my wife. reporter: ward later claimed it was an accident. in a jailhouse phone call he said his wife had taken her own life. diane killed herself tonight. i have nothing to be worried about, other than i just tried to get the gun out of her hand. reporter: the trial was often marked by drama. ward never took the stand, but his attorneys did have to silence him during an outburst. a $10 million life insurance policy. please. reporter: bob ward now faces life in prison. he will be sentenced in november. his attorney says they ll appeal. janet shamlyan, nbc news. sdwlimplt a landing in dense fog has killed all 19 people aboard a sightseeing plane in nepal. the tourism minister says two americans are among the victims. the plane was taking tourists to see mount everest. and an endurance athlete is pressing on despite painful jellyfish stings and strong ocean currents. she s about halfway through a grueling 103 mile swim from cuba to florida. at this pace she hopes to complete her recordsetting swim on monday morning. and, finally, saturday night live opened its 37th season with the disputed hosting record alec baldwin hosting for the 16th time staked his claim to breaking steve martin s record. martin challenged baldwin during a drug test to make sure the claim was legitimate. i m hosting completely steroid-free. then you won t mind giving us a little sample. baldwin passed the drug test, which was overseen by alleged expert seth roguan. it s just like lester and matt, right? [ female announcer ] the accufit digital system, excluly at lenscrafters. is about 5 times more precise than manual measurement techniques. lenscrafters. it s been more than two years since michael jackson died, and this week the doctor accused of taking his life stands trial in a case that will be watched around the world. i told the truth. reporter: did this man kill michael jackson? a jury of seven men and five women will have to answer that question as the biggest criminal trial since casey anthony gets underway this week out in california. not guilty. reporter: murray, who pleaded not guilty and has been out on $75,000 bail was the singer s personal physician and back in 2009 he was accused of giving jackson a fatal dose of propofol. murray is charged with involuntary manslaughter, not er. prosecutors must prove he the defense is expected to say that jackson administered the fatal dose himself. if convicted, he faces a maximum of four years in prison. the case has attracted worldwide attention and has cast a light on the final days of jackson s life. at the time of his death jackson was 50, on the verge of a comeback, and rehearsing for a series of shows in london. reporter: jackson s willing assy endures. his estate this year was valued at more than $200 million. famous for his moves, his music, and his mystique, this groundbreaking artist continues to inspire. his death was a tragedy, and we may soon know if it was also a crime. with us now is defense attorney and legal analyst karen desoto. good morning. murray faces a involuntary manslaughter charge. why not murder in this case? i actually ask myself that a lot in this case because the prosecutors could have upgraded this to second degree murder, and the way that they could have done that is because he is a doctor, if you are doing it in the course of a felony, you can upgrade that to second degree murder. however, in this case they went with manslaughter, and i think one of the reasons, jennifer, is that it is probably a lot easier for them to make the proof for manslaughter than it is for the more serious charge of second degree murder. what do prosecutors have to do here to convict? what are they looking for here? they really don t have to do a lot. manslaughter is kind of like negligence. okay. it s just killing without malice, and, therefore, here they just have to prove that he did not, you know wasn t using the ordinary care and, you know, he caused the death of michael jackson. it s a very serious charge because he is a doctor, and the jurors will probably hold him liable and to a higher standard because he was his doctor. he should have known better? he should have known exactly what he was doing? he should have known better. it s kind of similar to these dasz kaisz that we have with duis. you go and have a couple of drinks and you get in your car and kill a couple of people. you didn t intend to kill them, but you are going to be held liable for manslaughter. if prosecutors are going for a manslaughter over murder because it s easier, that puts a lot of pressure on the defense now. they have to get this done track record, and the two other cases which was elvis presley, they didn t fare very well in trials, and because it s a celebrity case, a lot of pressure on the defense, because of so many factors, because of the propofol, it should have been done in a hospital, he wasn t even licensed in california. if you are not licensed, you shouldn t be administering prescribed drugs. his argument will probably be, hey, i was trying to wean him off it. but it should have been in a hospital. these are really bad factors for the defense. a lot to factor in. karen, thank you very much. we ll take awe b llebrk. we ll be back after this but, first, these messages. maybe back then. what was that one? one life to live? all my children ended on friday. but we have a new reality, dirty soap wait until you hear the brains behind it. it s a reality show about daytime tv stars and what they do to get ready 2k3w4r50i6r7b8g9sds 12k3w4r5irz the watch out for a slight risk of severe weather along the lower mississippi river valley. we have a special guest with us today before we get to our local weather. this is andre simon, the ceo of women for women international. and you are going to chat about what your organization does. i hear it s great work. thank you so much. so excited to be here today. women to women international works with women survivors of war. help them to get back on their feet. do it thanks to supporters like amy and you support them for $30 per month on this training program. and i want amy to tell you about the run she organized. i heard about this run for the congress quoio for women. yesterday we had the sixth annual run for congo for women. every year, hundreds of weem come out, we all feel that to do nothing is stand alongside the oppressors. i heard you did a great job. we had a great turnout. thank you. amy and andre, thank you for being here. we brought you a t-shirt. here s a look at our temperatures right now. it s kind of balmy outside. look at these numbers in the low 60s. winds out of the south ahead of a cold front off to the west. we have mild air moving into the bay area for now. you can see we have clouds. eventually, those clouds will drop a little bit of light rain. the best bet of showers today, probably across the north bay. our temperatures will be pretty cool. we re looking at mid- to upper 60s for most of the inner bay. some low 70s inland. tomorrow, we start to clear out and warm up and heat up. tuesday, wednesday, and thursday 90s. now here s lester. now to amanda knox. this weekend prosecutors in italy tried to salvage of core of their case and argued the dna evidence does show the american murdered her british roommate, but not just lawyers are hoping the same evidence will exonerate her. we ll talk with her parents in just a moment, but, first, nbc s keith miller joins us live from perusia with the latest. keith, good morning. reporter: good morning, lester. well, prosecutors wrapped up their two-day summation in the case by asking the court to extend the prison sentence on both amanda knox and her former boyfriend to life, which is 30 years behind bars here in italy. amanda knox showed no emotion as prosecutors requested life in prison. they also asked for two to six months of daytime solitary confinement. the maximum penalty, according to the prosecution, fits the crime, which they described as a senseless killing. calling the circumstantial evidence against knox and her former boyfriend rock solid, the prosecution team spent two days attacking independent forensic scientists and the defendants. prosecutor juliano menini warned the judge and jury not to be deceived by the defendant s clean cut appearance. promiscuous and a liar is how the prosecution described knox. knox s lawyers insist their client is innocent. the prosecution attempted to persuade the judge and jury that the case is sound, even though crucial dna evidence was declared unreliable by court-appointed forensic sc ts. the prosecution contends knox and her former boyfriend murdered meredith kircher, an exchange student from england, in a sex game gone wrong. key tests on the murder weapon and a bloody bra clasp by independent scientists found no link between the defendants and the victim. the prosecution dismissed the findings, saying the brutality of the crime deserved a life sentence. the case continues next week with a verdict due by the beginning of next month. knox is expected to address the court before t. we expect it will be by the beginning of next month. keith miller, thank you. how is amanda holding up, know aing verdict could be just days away? joining us now also from perusia, are amanda s parents. good morning to both of you. thank you for joining us. good morning. good morning. if i could pick up with the last part of that report, the thought that amanda pick up wit the last part of that report, that amanda may issue a declaration, speak to the court. do you know what she d want to say to the court? she s been thinking about it for over three months and it will probably be very heartfelt and take place just before the jury goes in to deliberate. one of the things that the prosecution noted was the influence of the media some would argue that influence was on the initial outcome with a lot of tabloid reporting in great britain and certainly italy. do you think the tone of the coverage has changed italy? and is that affecting this case at all? absolutely. the tone has changed and amazing to me at the beginning when this is the same prosecutor who was waving a british tabloid as evidence, and really talking and leaking and spreading lies, now that the press has finally found out the truth, you know, it s really against the press. are you referring to the independent report ordered by the court on the dna evidence which largely discredit thad, and, kurt, the prosecution is still sticking by its guns, saying that evidence was key. do you think that s the linchpin of their case? i think it s actually what is really the truth. i think the independent experts, the court-appointed experts came back with what the truth is, and it s what the defense experts had been telling us all along. so hopefully that s what they will see when they go in and deliberate. and monday they will hear from francesca lorasco, the lawyer from the kerchner family, acting almost in a prosecutorial role. at what point does the defense get to have its say? rafaele s team starts on tomorrow and our team starts on wednesday. how is amanda holding sn upi? the entire family has gathered there. how is she doing? she is hanging in there. she continues to do what she s done every day and has tried to stay strong and positive, it s hard for her. and knowing that her life is on the line is just excruciating, but she s doing what she needs to do. kurt, i have to think that friday s testimony was pretty tough, because a lot of it was not so much on the facts of the case, but on the character of your daughter. how tough was that for you to sit through? how tough it was for amanda? well, you know, as her parents, it was brutal. having your daughter considered like the devil and everything in between, you know, amanda found it extraordinarily tough on friday, saturday obviously was more technical and she did better after the hearing, but it s really tough having somebody call your daughter those types of things when you know she s innocent and she knows she is too. all right. we ll end the conversation there we appreciate you joining us. thank you so much for your time this morning. thank you for having us. we re back in a moment. first, these messages. are you ready for your big party today ?
