really stupid people representing it from time to time. >> reporter: during this government shutdown, which again started two minutes ago, congress will get paid. but 800,000 federal employees will not. now, the president and lawmakers were slated to head out of town today. but for now it appears president trump will remain at the white house and congress will continue to work throughout the disease control and prevention. >> they are facing one of the worst flu outbreaks in years. >> reporter: the cdc serves as a surveillance entity informing state and local health departments about anything related to the flu and other diseases. on its website, the cdc assures clients it works 24/7, saving lives and protecting people. >> we would have less information about how influenza is spreading, how it's affecting people in terms of severity of illness, and how effective our vaccine is this year. >> reporter: this at a time when flu season is close to hitting its peak in many states. >> this year's influenza season is proving particularly difficult. >> all of the states, 49 of them, at least, are reporting in the same week widespread activity. >> reporter: with a government shutdown, there would be no updates like that one on the data collected. and if the cdc has no idea of how the flu is spreading, it would be hard to deliver more vaccine to those needed disease clusters. another concern is flu samples taken by local health departments and sent to the cdc would not be analyzed. for now, local bay area health departments say they have plenty of flu vaccine in case there is an unexpected outbreak. >> there would be concerns if the rdc was closed for more than a short period of time. >> reporter: the last government shutdown impacted the cdc by 16 days. other data collected by the cdc include those with the flu who have been admitted to hospitals. that won't be collected if there is a shutdown. and the number of flu deaths will not be recorded. in the newsroom,ly ann melendez. while some national parks are close, others will stay open. we learned tonight alcatraz will be open tomorrow no matter what happens in washington. also yosemite national park will remain open. employees will be placed on mandatory furloughs. the park's gates will be open, but they will be unstaffed. that means admission will be free. in arizona the state promised to keep the grand canyon open with state money. the park is the state's biggest tourist attraction and the governor is promising to provide up to $100,000 to keep everything up and running. but we had a mix of rain at the lower elevations, spotty, that is, and snow showers just above lake county earlier today. definitely mixed precipitation. same thing happened over mount hmt ton as you will notice in shades of pink. we have had everything from mixed precipitation to lightning off the coast this afternoon. as you will notice, those strikes there. and each reports of hale around the bay area. this was this afternoon, from santa rosa to petaluma. it was pea sized. cupertino pea sized hale fell. temperatures are already in the 30s for some parts of the bay area. you are on your way to a cold night. 13 degrees cooler in fairfield, 11 degree drop compared to yesterday at this time in napa. i'll show you how cold it is going to be tomorrow morning and what part of the weekend includes rain. police are searching for a gunman after a deadly shooting in san francisco's sunset district. officers responded to 34th and ortega around 4:30 this evening. there they found a 65-year-old woman with several gun shot wounds and pronounced her dead. police are looking for this man, 67-year-old winston hue. police believe he is armed and dangerous. he may be driving a blue kia sol with the california license plate number 5 byj 341. if you see this vehicle or mr. hue, police say do not approach him and call911 immediately. now to major developments in the investigation of the massacre in las vegas. the largest mass shooting in modern u.s. history. there are new images from inside that hotels room, and what the shooter's girlfriend has now revealed. ears abc news shell casings and a hammer next to glass from the shattered wind where stephen paddock opened fire targeting a crowded vegas murder festival below murdering 58 people, injuring more than 700. >> get down. >> reporter: for more than three months authorities provided few details about the deadliest mass shooting in u.s. history. today the sheriff released a report he calls preliminary. >> i lost a lot of sleep over this. >> reporter: after chasing 2,000 leads since october the gunman's motive is a mystery. police say he acted alone. >> he lost a significant amount of his monetary wealth in close proximity to 1 october and that may have a driving factor associated with it. >> reporter: the suspect -- the sheriff says he does not expect charges against the suspect's girlfriend who says paddock had become distant over the last years and bought more guns. ed. >> he believed that we were in close proximity of engaging him and he decided to take his own life. >> reporter: the sheriff says the fbi still has an ongoing case against someone connected to the shooting but they are not saying who that person is or why. play ton san del, abc news, denver. chicago police confirmed the infamous serial stowaway marilyn hartman is in police custody again after getting on an airpt airplane without a ticket n. recent years hartman has tried to board and fly from several airports. chicago police say she was stopped earlier this week after she tried to board an american airlines plane at other hair. then she allegedly went to a different terminal and got on a british airways flight the london without a ticket. british officials send her back to chicago. she is now awaiting charges. drunk drivers beware, do not count on your tesla's high-tech features to get you home. officers say this man failed a sobriety test but told them it doesn't matter because his car was on auto pilot. the chp says even on auto pilot the tesla requires some sort of response from a human being at certain times. if that doesn't happen, the car comes to a stop and that is apparently what happened. in developing news, san francisco prosecutors dismissed criminal charges against 11 anti-trump protesters who formed a human train across cal train tracks on inauguration day last year. law enforcement had to forcibly remove each person, as you see, the suspects faced misdemeanor charges. the d.a.'s office said it couldn't justify spending the resources necessary to investigate and try the case. tomorrow tens of thousands of people in the bay area and across the country are expected a the second annual women's marches. >> last year more than 2 million people from around the world marched in protest the day after donald trump's inauguration. there were an estimated 100,000 in san francisco alone. the organizer of the city's women's march spoke with us on abc7 news at 4:00 about continuing that momentum. >> what i think the march created was the idea that we are not alone and that we can have our voices be heard and we have communities and allies behind us. with that in mind now we are encouraging women to run for office. we are encouraging women to register to vote. >> the san francisco march starts with a noon rally at civic center plaza then a march up market street to the embarcadero. the san jose march begins at 11:00 a.m. at city hall and goes to sierra. but is it enough to make a difference for skiers. and meteorologist new details on the debt of rker tom petty. a coroner's report says he died of an accidental drug overdose. his family says he was self medicating for a fractured hip that turned into a broken hip as he continued to tour not wanting to cancel and disappoint his fans. he was described a variety of medication including fentanyl patches and oxycontin. our latest winter storm is a snow maker up in the sierra. that is great news for tahoe ski resorts which has been waiting for a long time for a dutching of snow to improve their slopes. we have new video. >> reporter: skiers and boarders, feast your eyes on this. we got new video from kirkwood resort. it's dutching right now. after it's done, the highest slopes will have collected up to two pete of powder. north star says this first big storm of the winter season comes just in time. >> i think we see a lot of guests make decisions based on snowfall. that's normal. people like to come up, when it's snowing, when it feels wintry. i think our guests feel amplified and get pumped up when it's snowing. >> there has been rain but there hasn't been this much snow since november. mother nature cooperated then but took a long break december and the first half of january. until today skiers had to make due with mostly man made snow, which is either icier or slushier. ski related businesses are also pumped about the new snow. rental shops in tahoe and the bay area saw a boost before today's storm and they expect a further boost with several more rounds of cold snow making storm in the forecast. all good news from the recreation and consumer perspective. only thing to remember, as these cameras show driving in a snowstorm can be treacherous. if you go welcome sight. as you know we have been hurting for snow. at kirkwood, seven to 11 inches of snow was reported there. a beautiful picture there. in terms of the rainfall here in the bay area, we had be breezy, but definitely still remaining on the chilly side, low to upper 50s. i shouldn't say than today. than yesterday. we had a lot of sun today. on the storm impact scale, a level one sunday evening going into monday morning. north bay will see 3/4 to two inches of rain. it is worth watching especially since those burn scar areas could potential esee some problems. most areas will be a quarter to .65 of an inch. the reason it is a level one, as of right now we are not expecting strong winds or any other potential major issues. but we will keep an eye on it. hour by hour we go. sunday evening north bay is continuing to see the rain. san francisco and did east bay by 11:00. overnight into monday morning it is wet across the bay area. sierra nevada will get more snow. california sets a new record. in december, it fell to 4.3%. that's the lowest since 1976 when records started being kept. in the bay area, all nine counties had a lower unemployment rate than the for real id in california. these are enhanced id cards that meet new federal standards and will soon be required. starting in 2020 your current driver's license build no longer be enough to board a domestic flight. 300 new employees have been hired to help with processing applications for the ids. you have to go to a dmv field office and bring current proof of id, proof of social security number and proof of california residency. 28 years ago some sea lions decided to make san francisco's pier 39 their home. officials say animals came sparingly at first but within months there were hundreds. the number of sea lions rise and fall with the seasons and hit an all-time record of 1701 in november of 2009. they were everywhere. pier 39 is celebrating the anniversary all month long. you free sea running another four weeks. >> a flurry of last-minute negotiations failed to beat that deadline. that means tens of thousands of national work remembers furloughs, national parks are closed and payments are cut off to service members and veterans. new information from one of the homes where 13 sibling were held captive and tortured by their own parents. doctors are treating those children. family tonight at 10:00 over on channel 7. the possibly of immigration raids are hanging over the heads of many families in the bay area. tonight officials in the south bay took an opportunity to send a message to the trump administration. janine de la vega shows you what the county is doing. >> reporter: one county, one future, that message is splashed all over buses throughout the south bay. why? santa clara county officials know the immigrants who live here are fearful of president trump's agenda. >> we are hearing about the massive raids that are going to take place. we are getting ready, getting ready to fight, because the only way to respond to that hatred and bigotry is to push back. >> reporter: top leaders in santa clara county leld a news conference letting everyone know they will not be intimidated. and they are offering help to the immigrant community. that resonated with the council general of new mexico. he and several consulates of american eagle countries were on hand. >> they recognize the contribution the mexican community in this area. >> reporter: the county wants to get the word out that mental health services are available to anyone who is feeling anxious about possible deportation. free or low cost legal assistance is also being offered. >> santa clara county has invested $3.5 million to work with community based organizations to provide them access to immigration attorneys. >> reporter: besides these buses there will be billboards up on the freeway, and at bus stops throughout the south bay promoting the county's support for the immigrant community. 60% of the families in the county have a member who is an immigrant or a u.s.-born child of an immigrant. with numbers that large, local officials say they are committed to protecting the most vulnerable communities n. san jose, janine de la vega abc news. >> the supreme court will hear arguments in legal and decide the legality of president trump's travel ban. the policy applies to residents of six muslim majority countries and north korea and people from venezuela. last month a federal appeals court ruled the ban violates federal immigration law. the supreme court allowed that news, new york. catherine zeta jones is responding to a sexual misconduct allegation against her husband michael douglas, the 48-year-old actress appeared on abc's the view today hours after a woman accused michael douglas of a lewd act. susan brody appeared on national tv saying the two time oscar winner touched him inappropriately in front of her when she worked for him. zeta jones said her
