mourns the man who changed apple into a game changer. steve jobs passed away around 4:30 this afternoon. one employee described the mood inside as muted. jobs was widely considered the creative visionary of apple who changed the world with the ipod, the iphone and the ipad. he was a marketing genius who combined art and technology while turning apple into the largest retailer of music with itunes. in 2008 he showed dramatic weight loss. in 2009, received a liver transplant. he took medical leave last january and stepped down as c.e.o. in august. no one here was surprised by today's news. >> it is somber for sure. but everybody's glad that the company is doing as well as it was. i think everybody realizes that he spent a lot of his last, you know, few years there making sure that things were ready to go. most of us were glad to have had th the opportunity to spend time at the company while he was there. >> steve gets a little more credit than maybe he deserves for what amp has done but he is going out as god. everybody who works here is going go what would steve do, does this come up to his par? >> apple stock fluctuated with his health and now tech experts are pondering the fate of apple without job's guidance. industry and lits are already putting jobs in the same category with thomas edison, henry ford and walt disney. steve jobs died peacefully surrounded by his that was his ability to sell. >> because e had such great charisma and was the public face of apple he became a star and somebody that people actually knew. he could have had all of h his other skills and probably been just as successful without the great presentation skills. he was a great presenter and fantastic salesman. a one on one kind of thing which is how i think people felt with the steve jobs presentation. other tech companies took a page out of steve jobs playbook on began presenting their products on the stage like he did. think of mark zuckerberg and facebook for one example of that. steve jobs never graduated from college. he also talked about other pivotal moments in his life. >> all of my working class parents savings were being spent on my college tuition. i decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out okay. when i was 17 i read a quote that went something like if you live each day as if it was your last some day you will most certainly be right. i have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself if today were the last day of my life would i want to do what i am about to do today and whenever the answer has been no for too many bays i days in a i know i need to change something. remembering that you are going to die is the best way i know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. you are already naked. there is no reason not to follow your heart. >> a few years ago you gave a commemoration speech at stanford not graduating class. now, a few years later and a couple years wiser would you add anything else to the speech that you gave a couple of years ago? >> probably i would just turn up the volume on it because the last few years have reminded me that life is fragile. >> indeed. by the way, after dropping out of college, steve jobs hung around town making money collecting bottles to get the five sent deposits. we will have more later in the newscast including an interview with steve wozniak the man who helped found apple with jobs. next, another major story we are following. a gunman still on the run from a shooting ram page that left three people dead and 7 others wounded. the suspect, 57-year-old sharif william alman of san jose. a single father and producer for community television in san jose. also an employee at the lehigh quarry and cement plant where the rampage began. not long afterward in the hewlett packet parking lot a woman was injured in a carjacking attempt. leslie brinkley with the latest on the search. >> reporter: the suspect is still at large. in fact, the sheriff said a short while ago they don't have any idea where he is. they are working on some leads, however. you have local law enforcement agencies working in tandem with the u.s. marshall's office, called the fugitive apprehension team on the ground still looking for alman. they want to find the man behind this morning's tragic shooting. at 43:00 wednesda 4:30 shay opened fire during a routine safety meeting at the plant where he worked. of the 14 people there nine wounded. two died at the scene. 51-year-old john vanishing edge lay hose and mark munoz,ing to the of san jose. a third man died at a nearby hospital. >> the suspect did shoot the victim several times in the arm. >> reporter: by 7 am he turn ited up at a hewlett packard parking lot. investigators found his car abon doned at a nearby restaurant and a rifle hidden under a dumpster. other weapons including assault rifles were also found and then neumann disappeared. a massive manhunt shut down residential neighborhoods along the cupertino border. >> scary for you. >> i was on lockdown all day and couldn't go to work. >> the intense search lasted 12 hours. >> we know the area that we searched is clear or we believe it. we had many, many times working many, many hours this clearing the neighborhoods. adjoining neighborhoods please lock your doors like you should every night. we believe the suspect is armed and certainly dangerous. >> reporter: i'm here live at the law enforcement command post. they say it is believed he may be armed with twod handguns, perhaps more weapons. they called him a disgruntled employee although they haven't nailed down exactly what the motive was behind the shootings this morning. friends say he had a lot to live for. he had a teenaged daughter he lived with. they just don't know what made him snap but they are still searching for him but that on the ground neighborhood lockdown has finally ended. reporting live in cupertino, leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. he lives in the stone gate apartment complex in san jose. his neighbors cannot imagine what happened to him. >> i don't know if it is job related. i know he has having problem with the jobs for years. i don't know what this is about. >> have you met his daughter? do you know her? >> yes. >> he is raising a daughter by h himself. >> yes? she is a good girl and working and stuff so i don't understand. >> brian: those are the sentiments about a lot of people we have been talking about. dan noyes spoke with the mother of his 18-year-old daughter. she says she went to jail for a short time for domestic violence but was fighting back against abuse that sharif was dishing out. she said she thought alman had turned his life around. sharif alman talked about domestic violence, promoting a book he wrote on the topic. >> a number one book in six women prisons in the united states. >> i'm interested i know that your day job is you work as a miner. >> yes, i'm a miner. >> that is interesting. any connection between what you do for your day job and becoming a television produce iter? >> nothing at all. totally different. i drive heavy equipment for 13 years now. >> sharif was busy during his hours away from the quarry, hosting his own cable access show, interviewing celebrities and political figures including jesse jackson, here at a memorial for a local pastor. >> what would you say about the entire event today. >> spiritually he is with us. >> he even appears in will smith's film the pursuit of happiness. last year he rode the freedom train from san jose to san francisco to celebrate martin luther king day. >> the train shows all of different nationalities coming together for one cause. >> overall good guy, you know. really has a good relation with people. >> several people who knew alman before today's shootings couldn't figure out how their friend turn inside ed into a k. >> something happened between the job and whatever else personal was going on in his life to cause him to either snap or have a breakdown. >> at a news conference this afternoon, several san jose community leaders expressed their shock and sadness about sharif, a man they knew as a friend. >> we are hoping and praying that he would just simply turn himself in. his children need him injuries community needs him. we hope that he would do the right thing and sort of end this very horrible nightmare. nonprofit group for at-risk youth called helping hands changing hearts. according to the tax forms they never raised any money and had the nonprofit status revoked for failing to keep up on paper work. he had his delivers license suspended in '92 and convicted of miss demean nor forgery in 1992 and spent a brief time in jail. both the shooting rampage and the death of steve jobs have a lot of people reporter: bad road conditions isn't what drivers expected for this time of year. lots of spinouts this morning. it got so bad at one sometime, cal trans shut down interstate 80. >> a lot of people were unprepared for the weather conditions. >> reporter: but the early snow could be a sign of good things to come. heavenly mountain resort says on this exact date last year an early storm came and the season went on to break previous snowfall records. >> the chef and restaurant owner posts that translates to equally good business this season. >> people make plans for the winter about this time of year. when they see that the sierras have snow, this is where they will come. >> reporter: forecasters warn a wet fall does not guarantee a wet winter. snowfall is expected to be in the normal range this season. tourists just want this week back to normal. >> i was planning for 70s. i have been up here in october and it has been beautiful. >> reporter: the chef says most of the storms last as it pushes continuing out towards lake tahoe. back to the bay area, rainfall totals for this date. oakland, moffet field and salinas. kentfield, 1.75 inches of rain from the storm today. a new record for this date. these are all new records for this date in the bay area. right now, temperatures in the 50s around the bay area. relatively cool. pleasantly cool i might add. and the highlights are these. chance of showers overnight, widely scattered and more scattered showers may occur tomorrow. then we will have sunnier and warmer weather for the weekend and into next week. satellite radar composite image shows the trough that went through earlier that brought us today's and tonight's little bought of rainfall. another little disturbance moving in our direction as well. this might bring us a chance of showers for tomorrow. start the timeline at 11:00 tonight and overnight mainly quiet conditions. little in the way of precipitation. early tomorrow morning showers redevelop right in time for the start of rush hour and then during the morning hours a chance of some scattered showers and some may be rather strong in the mid morning hours and later in the afternoon a little lull but there is again a chance of more scattered showers later in the day finally tapering off in the evening hours tomorrow and then tomorrowight into friday things start to clear out and warm up. overnight tonight relatively cool in the north bay with lows in the upper 40s. low to mid 50s in most other locations and tomorrow's highs will be much cooler than average. generally in the low to mid 60s.
