this job, i have to be honest with you? how're you feeling? >> is an important thing to do for the future and it is a challenge but i think it is very important. we have polls, of course, but the fact is we have a new plan for high-speed rail not for the high-speed rail system itself but for the rail in california. $12 billion of investments including part systems in l.a. and high-speed rail and as people see the total program they will understand we have a good program that is a great investment. >> people i talk with split into three camps. one is, are you kidding me, it is so expensive. the second one says i like the idea but is the timing right? and the third is, i like the idea and the timing is right but we can't afford it in the long run. which one you want to tackle first? >> first of all about the timing, i was on the bart board for 12 years and we built the bart to san francisco airport which is now highly successful but we were building that in the middle of the economic expansion in the '90s and that was tough. when prices went up, labour prices went up, this is the time to make those investments >> but not everyone agrees with you. blumberg had state senator the telephone and he said he cannot understand what all that debt prisoners are being released and county jails, cuts to schools, why we are pursuing this? not the best endorsement >> no, but here's the thing and the governor has said this, this is planting the seeds for the future. we all know how tough the budget situation is but it is also true, we have close to 40 percent unemployment in the central valley among construction workers. that is a lot of people leaning against the safety net, pulling on social services, we will turn them into taxpayers by giving them worked. there are lots of jobs here to invest in the future and by the way, this state continues to grow. we need to invest in something to move people around the next 20 or 30 years and if it is not a high-speed rail, we think it is something more expensive. it is a choice of how we meet the growing population >> if we build this will it be able to sustain itself continually subsidize? >> the answer is, unlike bart or community or most of the public transportation systems, high- speed rail systems around the world, once they're built and once you spend money to build them, they all make money going forward and all of our projections, even the conservative ones, say that will be the case in california as well. >> the first thing we're doing is we're trying to see if we have a smart program. we have to invest in california's future and this is one of the choices and we think it is a smart choice >> was its oversold initially to voters? were they given a realistic package? >> no, and i think one of the things this governor has done, he has put people on that have a business background. we try to bring a better business sense to what this means. nothing gets built in this country without people having a vision. the people to put it on the ballot had the vision, but it is a hard thing to build and to do that i think we have tried to be realistic about what it will cost but it will be worth it. >> it will certainly make for an interesting couple of weeks. thanks for coming down from sacramento. ♪ [ male announcer ] it's one thing... to have created an icon and quite another to have done it will see. new numbers show that he fell behind mitt romney as far as campaign donations go >> the president raised more than $60 million last month. republican rival mitt romney popped him last month raising more than $76 million. so what does it mean? >> for that we turn to the political insiders, former mayor willie brown and san francisco chronicle carla mayor poochie's. our first question, how much is this presidential election going to cost? >> at least $1 billion on obama side, $1 billion on mitt romney side and $1 billion particularly to republican supertaxes 03 billion dollars will be identifiable and there will be a lot more because there are 50 states and there will be contests like you would not believe and every level, money will be the heart and soul of these campaigns >> he is an incumbent, people ought to know one way or another how they feel about the president >> the way the campaign is operating, it seems like they're on the defense with everything. they are! romney says he does not even have business experience and cannot operate a corner store. i have not seen the obama people say excuse me, he has been the ceo of the world's largest economy for three years. is that not experience? >> from obama standpoint, he really is an outsider, emotionally and otherwise, and when you are the outsider but your really the insider, you have a lot of trouble making people believe you're still an outsider said the campaign is played with that conflict. he needs to run as the president. bill clinton still runs and he ate the president >> obviously, obama knows the scene, is the same speech pretty much. the people there are supportive of him. it is a lot of young faces and a lot of the people who are writing these checks are the old hillary clinton crowd. a lot of those young technology guys, hope and change, it >> the campaign is doing what the campaign needs to do. when you roll into town, you ought to surround yourself with them, every athlete that you can get your hands on, he has not been doing that. this is the first time he has done that in a long time >> he does these little private round-table discussions where you pay $40,000 to be with him. >> this is the second one in two weeks for asian-americans and your right, they have completely closed these to the media. >> with all due respect, they will be one of those events any day 20 year reporters come up with $20,000 each, and then you have it! it is a matter of money, not philosophy. >> the other big question is how much it costs us to host the president >> allot because here in san francisco whether it is the president of the united states or the president of turkey, we have to turn out the chp and everyone >> is a lot of taxpayer money. coming up next, governor brown responding to big wins on pension reform last tuesday. >> with the vote in san jose and san diego means, as well. >> he was aiming for the runway but he almost hit the fai,,,,,,, >> a small airplane misses the runway and lands on the fairway. >> as international leaders condemned the fighting in syria, violence has spread to the country's capital. >> the final port of call for the uss iowa. the veterans and families who showed up. welcome back to the weekend early edition. good morning. >> thanks for starting or sunday with us. it will be a lovely day. we do have a red flag warning in effect and we're talking about some fire departments about to make more cuts. >> first, a different type of call from public safety. a foursome on a golf outing got quite a thrill >> a small plane made an emergency landing on the course on which they were playing. it was a single engine cessna with only a pilot on board which lost power and managed to glide in short of the runway and onto the grass of a golf
