certainly a day like today. anything in the 80s or above when it s humid out will put you at risk. what heat exhaustion is, when your body heat advises to the point you can t cool off on your own. stay well hydrated on a day like today. i walked yesterday, i think it was maybe 30 minutes. by the end of the walk, my head was spinning from the heat. oh, yeah. you were already dehydrated. that s one of the dangers of dehydration. people think thirst is the first sign. it s not. once you rety, you re past the point where you lost fluid. your first sign is actually fatigue. so stay up with your fluid loss, drink a lot of water. if you become thirsty, that s your second stage and a sign you re already dehydrated and drink a will the more. it sounds like you should head out with water in hand. certainly on a day like today. heat stroke. people will mow the lawn not realizing the impact it can have on your body. heat stroke is the second stage after heat exhaustion when your body temperature rises to a level above 104 degrees. this is a life threatening situation. what will happen is your body gets so hot that your organs actually start to become damaged. you start to get brain swelling, you get confusion, your skin gets hot and dry and the elderly and kids are especially at risk. don t have them outdoors on a day when the temperature is in the 90s and certainly not playing sports. so how should you be treated if, in fact, you think that you ve suffered heat stroke? if you think actually someone else notices you re a little off but get them cooled as quickly as possible, call 911, put ice packs in their armpits, even spray them off with a hose, anything to cool them down quickly. heat rash. a problem. a lot of people are prone to it and very annoying. it s a trickily red little bumps that form on the chest. how do you treat it? avoid the heat obviously and try to wear breathable fabric and avoid heavy creams. swimmer s ear. what is it? swimmer s ear is an infection of the ear canal and it happens when the ear gets wet and the bacteria start to grow. very easily treated with ear drops and go to your doctor if you feel itching. a lot of kids just want to get in the water. how do you prevent it in the first place? once they come out of the pool or the ocean, dry their ear off gently with a towel and have them shake their heads. poison ivy. again, something that you run into, next thing you know you re scratching. poison ivy, leaves of three, let it be. three leaves around a stem that could be poison ivy but it does hide and it gives you a character rash of very curved red lines. how do you treat it? first, if you know you ve been exposed in the first ten minutes, wash yourself off right away. otherwise you just have to let it run its course. leaves of three, let it be. that s stuck in our heads. lastly, insect bites and stings. yeah. one more after that but insect bites and stings. those can cause a whole host frommiveness to redness to reaction. people allergic can get tremendous swelling and redness or even the airway closes up. something more serious obviously. some of the bug creams? have an antihistamine ready, take it on your trip. and the last one is sea sickness. the dreaded motion sickness. for that the key is prevention. if you know you get it, take a dramanine. focus on the horizon, stay in the fresh air and avoid alcohol and reading books. thank you very much. it s great to see you. still to come today a stress-free vacation. we ll have advice on how to just relax and let it go. up next, a young woman with a rare medical condition that prevents her from gaining weight. consuming 5,000 calories a day. ? it s hard. they look at me like i m a monst monster. i like to say that wherever i go it s like i walk with an audience because people are constantly looking at me. reporter: the truth is lizzie cannot gain weight. thank you. reporter: despite consuming as many as 5,000 calories a day, the 21-year-old weighs the same as an average 8-year-old. i would say an average breakfast would be a breakfast taco or two and then after that maybe like 30 minutes, an hour later, i m starting to get hungry again, so i ll snack on chips or cookies or sweets usually. i m a big junk food eater. i think you have an issue with realizing what my size is. reporter: her condition is a medical mystery but doctors say she may have a form of neonatal system that can cause fat loss and accelerated aging. lizzie is also blind in one eye. she was born prematurely weighing under 3 pounds. her mom dressed her in clothes made for dolls. could this condition claim your life? no, it couldn t. and i don t like to think about it. i live every day to the fullest. i live it as it s my life because with the syndrome everything is unknown. reporter: the velasquezes are a close family. they have raised all their children to be confident and proud. what do you think of the woman she s turned out to be? she s outstanding. she s surpassed everything that tivational speaker when she graduates, sharing her story of overcoming obstacles. for today, janet shamlian, nbc news, austin. and lizzie velasquez is here with us exclusively along with her parents rita and lupe. i have to ask you, rita, first you watched this with tears in your eyes. how was it possible that you raised this girl who says people stare at her all the time, how is it possible you raised a girl who would sit here on this couch in front of millions of people and let people look at her with this confidence? i don t know. i just treated her as a normal child. i didn t treat her any differently. she was just our daughter. we just raised her how we knew how to do it and that s what we did. lupe? all i can say, she was brought into this world with a purpose and we re all learning from her. and we get our strength from her. and so all we can do is support her and be there for her. in fact, lizzie, i understand that you convinced them to be here with you. you had to talk them into it. they support me in anything i do. so no matter what it is, if i wanted to jump off a building, i m sure they would probably try not to tell me not to do it but i m sure they ll support me. as long as i get my story out there, they support me 100%. get your story out there. this is the mission. yes, definitely. every single day my mission is to get my story out there. why? because people need to know that no matter what you look like or what you go through in your life, you don t need to be judged because of your outer appearance and you don t need to let that stop you. you don t need to let the negativity hold you back or keep you from living your life the way you want. and how did you do that, lizzie? how did you prevent the negativity from tearing you down? i mean, honestly, i m human. so, of course some of the negativity is going to hurt and it s going to upset me, but my dad always tells me i can only have my one sad cry and then you have to move on and look at the positive sides of things and i have to give all that credit to my parents and to my family because they raised me as if i was nothing different. so i have to when i have to learn from the outside world that, yes, you are different. my mindset is still you re normal. so i m kind of just like fight ing to prove i m normal even though i m small. so you re teaching other people essentially? yes. you have a feisty daughter. yes. what did you say to her? every day she would there were days she had bad days and she would complain about how she looked or how thin she was. i said, there s always others that are worse, that have more struggles than you do. just be grateful and thankful for what you have, your health, and that you are doing fine and we always were trying to be positive with her. we never told her anything different. we never treated her differently. it was always, you can do whatever you want to do, put your mind to it and that s it. just set goals. and she s met almost all her goals. she has accomplished just to get there. did eating 5,000 calories a day require to have you weigh 60 pounds? no, no, no. honestly, i would never actually look at a calorie in my life just because i ve never had to. why do you eat so much, do you think, compared to other people? i get hungry really quickly and i don t eat a lot of big meals. i eat a lot of small meals, so i get full kind of fast. so i just kind of snack throughout the day and i, of course, have my breakfast, lunch and dinner, but i don t have a required amount of food. has this always been the case when she was younger? yes. she could eat anything. that s what it is. she eats all day long, just small meals, snacking in between, but it s never like a full meal that she sits complete. it s small meals throughout the day and she does get hungry a lot. she always is snacking which is hard for us. it s hard to keep that kind of food in the house since she can eat whatever she wants. meantime now your daughter has written a book. yes. she has written a book to help other people understand more deeply. your daughter has written a book. when she was in middle school, she said i m going to grow up, be an inspirational people, i m going to write a book. i m not even going to dedicate the book to you. you re not believing in me. and here she is accomplish her mission and when i read the manuscript, i was crying, thinking back to when she was a baby, and i hadn t read it at all because it was a collaboration between mom and daughter and, you know, i wanted to wait for the finished product. and i just sat there laughing and crying. it was really emotional. i m just so proud of her, the strength she has and the courage and determination. thank you for joining us. thank you very much. rita and lupe, thank you for raising such an exceptional daughter. and the book is called lizzie beautiful. and if you want more information about it go to our website todayshow.com. and still to come here on today, what your teens can do this summer to help them get into the college of their choice. at cvs/pharmacy. i m taking the right steps to manage my diabetes and my budget. extracare advantage for diabetes is a new program that helps me save money and earn double bucks on over 100 items, so we can stay a step ahead of. all: our diabetes! join extracare advantage for diabetes today and receive a free gift when you enroll. only at cvs/pharmacy. takes care of 33 loads. tide stain release only handles 11. and clorox 2 gets rid of tough stains right before your eyes. clorox 2. find it next to the clorox bleach. are the things we make. this has always been a nation of builders, craftsmen. men and women for whom straight stitches and clean welds were matters of personal pride. they made the skyscrapers and the cotton gins. colt revolvers, jeep 4 x 4 s. these things make us who we are. as a people, we do well when we make good things and not so well when we don t. the good new is, this can be put right. we just have to do it. and so we did. this, our newest son, was imagined, drawn, carved, stamped, hewn and forged here in america. it is well made and it is designed to work. this was once a country where people made things, beautiful things, and so it is again. the new jeep grand cherokee. who are you?!? you do want to avoid that. i ll lay on the beach and relax but your head stays back at home checking in with the office. it s much better to take a vacation where you have lots of activities to do. at redbook we sent a writetory a farm that accepts guests and she and her family had the best time because they moved from one new experience to the next. her kids were gathering eggs and they were playing with baby lambs and they really managed to reconnect with nature and reconnect with each other. it was a wonderful break. gail, you make that same point about learning a new activity can can even help if you re a couple away. learning something new, first of all, when you have a new experience, it increases the dopamine level in your brain which is a hormone of pleasure. it feels good and you want to do it again. and so souping up that enriches you. enrichment isn t the same thing as being relaxed and destressed but it s a good substitute. for the person who can t necessarily just relax and be doing nothing, feeling enriched by some experience you have, you mentioned you were away on vacation and you really improved your french. you ve acquired something new. what does it say about us that we don t know how to vacation anymore? i think what it says is that we are almost addicted to stress and it takes a whole lot for us to really unplug and rejuvenate. one of the things that we suggest and ties back into what gail is saying about something new is to think about the adult camp scenario so you can go to a camp and learn how to sail, how to surf. incorporating physical exercise and that doesn t mean necessarily going to the gym. it can be a walk. physical exercise, even 30 minutes a day, takes down your anxiety level, boosts your mood, in fact in head-to-head studies of antidepressants and exercise with mild to moderate depression, they really worked equally well. you want to use that on vacation as well. it could be 30 minutes. walk around. with the kids it helps them work off the energy. you say learn to soothe. take a hot bath on vacation? there are the hot bath types and those of us who say what am i doing here? you have to be realistic about what your type is. but unplugging from all your gizmos and gadgets is one of the major things that we recommend. a lot of us as we re getting ready to go on vacation pack a bag full of electronics. pack a deck of cards instead. go old school. pack some board games. it s incredibly important in all aspects of vacation as well, whether we re talking about using visual imagery or breathing, havg a box of tools you can use to cope with stress will help you on vacation or wherever you are. good stuff. thank you both very much. good advice. hopefully we can now put that advice to work in our lives. thank you. up next, helping your child stand out from the path to colle college. da, da, da-da-da, da, da-da-da, da, da-da [ female announcer ] there s a place called hidden valley where kids not only eat their vegetables, they can t get enough. hidden valley ranch. makes vegetables delectable. discover four more ways to make vegetables delectable with farmhouse originals from hidden valley. we re all striving for it. purina cat chow helps you nurture it in your cat with a full family of excellent nutrition and helpful resources. purina cat chow. share a better life. purina cat chow. why do women like you love activia light? well, i tell students that they should be getting involved in pursuing an interest or one activity for a long period of time over the summer. it doesn t mean they have to take the whole summer to do something. they can certainly take a few weeks off but longer programs are better than shorter programs. are we talking now about rising seniors here or anybody in high skochool? anybody in high school really. colleges are going to see everything from ninth grade on and they re looking more and more on how students are spending their time outside the classroom including summers. you are an advocate that they should become involved in academic programs or camps. there are so many programs out there for any interest and you want to pursue your own interests. and many of these programs, by the way, offer scholarships and financial aid. if you re interested in music, for example, there s a five-week summer performance program at berkeley college of music in boston. if you re interested in the sciences, there s a program at the university of pennsylvania. they host a summer science academy. so there s almost anything that you can find online. what about taking college level courses? are there more opportunities now for high school students to take those kinds of courses? absolutely. and parents can sign your children up for a local community college and you can take a class, a student can take a class in an area of interest or maybe something that isn t offered in their high school like business or marketing or something like that and they can get an idea what they might want to major in in college and many times they can often start working towards college credit by taking those classes. the folks who do the admissions are looking at the whole broad range of a child s experiences. a lot of schools now have studied abroad programs. what about before you go to college? does it help and what kind of opportunities are there? again, it depends on your interests but we tell students if if you can do a study abroad ogram, take a long er program, do a four-week-plus program so you re really getting immersed into another place, in another culture, and we have programs where they can study economics london, art history, archaeology in peru, there s so much out there. you want to get online and see what you can find. some may say that s well and good if you have a lot of money. if you have a limited income, can you still take advantage?
