it s in the smithsonian. i have been waiting for halloween to land on a sunday since i started the job. i m very excited. we look forward to getting outside with everyone. we have a lot of news to tell you about. coming up, new details on the terror plot against the u.s. oh. officials say the target may have been a u.s. aircraft. we know cell phones may have been involved. we ll get the latest on the arrest of a mother and daughter in yemen connected to the investigation and we hear from their attorney. also the president and vice president will be campaigning together in ohio later today. we ll have insight and talk strategy with david gregory. we begin with the terror threat. investigators say it may not have been a dry run but the real thing. nbc s justice correspondent pete williams has the latest. reporter: these pictures taken by police in dubai show what was inside the printer cartridges. the explosive known as petn, the same substance in richard reid s shoe box and in the underwear on the christmas day flight. this is the force of the petn. now we hear the toner cartridges held five times that amount. in england where one of the packages was intercepted friday, authorities say it contained a working bomb. the targets may have been an aircraft. had it detonated, the aircraft could have been brought down. reporter: officials say the bombs were made with liquid detonators and cell phone timers. investigators believe the terrorists may have been targeting passenger airplanes. some experts say that carries half the air cargo coming into the u.s. they were intercepted because the tracking numbers allowed them to be located quickly. it was that information and not the repeated screening that led to their discovery. homeland security says it is part of the nation s defense. we need a multi-layers system. no screening system is a silver bullet where terrorism is concerned. reporter: the package in the uk came from yemen. the other went to dubai where it was stopped. both were on cargo planes which are under less strict rules. federal law doesn t require all such cargo to be screened. whoever sent the packages may have chose chosen to exploit the fact. the way they hid the explosives, they put it in a cargo plane. this is a way to bypass a lot of security procedures the united states put in place. reporter: in yemen, the president said they are determined to fight terrorism and warn against outsiders coming in. security was tight at shipping offices where employees were questioned. yemeni authorities say a woman and her mother were arrested based on the number on a cargo form but u.s. officials have their areas on others involved and are optimistic more arrests are coming. pete williams, nbc, washington. on the phone with us is the attorney for the mother and daughter arrested in connection with the bomb threat. good morning and thank you so much for being with us. caller: good morning. have you spoken to your client? what is she telling you about the arrest? caller: unfortunately we cannot have access to her and her mother, but we have connected with the family. what we have heard is what we got from the newspapers that last night security officials came into the neighborhood to detain them. they detained them because apparently her name appears on the receipt for the package that was mailed. do you know how her name would have appeared on the receipt if she was not involved? all we have heard in the media and what was pronounced by the yemen president. to have a phone number posted on a package to be a crime, we feel it is not. it s not clear evidence for her conviction. what is your understanding do you believe authorities are looking for anyone else in connection with the packages? we didn t have any information and the security we didn t have any information up to now. but we believe we have some information that she has police. what is your understanding of what happens next? when do you expect to be able to talk to her and when would you expect to find out the exact nature of the charges? actually, we didn t have any information about it. but we believe as we have experience in such cases that she s national security i mean according to, being the intelligence of yemen. but we are going to meet her family this afternoon. we can get some information. i understand that hanan is 22 years old. what kind of young woman is she? what does she do? she s kind and here colleagues said she s find, helpful, cooperative and doesn t have any enemies or grounds for something like this. we thank you so much for spending time with us this morning. you re welcome. here s jenna. all right, thanks. to politics now. on this final weekend before the mid-term elections with the polls showing a potential landslide for republicans in congress, president obama is pressing to keep as many seats as he can including the one he held before taking office. mike, the president s campaigned hard for democrats over the last couple of weeks. any evidence he s having success in holding back the suspected republican gains? reporter: good morning. maybe around the margins but all arrows are pointing down headed into tuesday. he came to chicago, just a stone s throw from the house he maintains here. had another big rally on a college campus. a good turnout. he was here in support of the senate candidate since obama left. ginoulias is running here. he started in philadelphia trying to rally campaign workers in the state to get them to the polls. it is all about getting out the vote at this juncture. he ended up in connecticut for dick blumenthal and encounters aids protesters. today they are working for ted strickland. thanks. one of the most closely watched races is in nevada where harry reid is battling sharron angle. it s been costly and contentious. john, good morning. what s at stake in the race? reporter: the republicans would love to take out reid, the top democrat of the senate, a key player in the passage of health care reform. he s saddled by the sour economy here in nevada. the worst unemployment, bankruptcy and home foreclosure rates in the nation. the republicans embraced a tea party candidate, sharron angle, who wants to phase out social security, repeal health care reform and eliminate the education department. this race is a dead heat, although in recent days there have been signs of movement towards angle. she opened up a slim 49% to 45% lead, still within the margin of error. in nevada, you can vote for none of the above which means it is possible the winner will have less than 50% of the vote. voter turnout will be key and tomorrow, michelle obama will try to rally the troops for harry reid. jenna? this is a good one to watch. thank you. here s lester. david gregory is moderator of meet the press. good to see you. president obama is in chicago campaigning for governor strickland. given ohio s role in the presidential races how important is it for democrats to do well in the midterms? critically important. the president has his eye on re-election in 2012. he knows how important ohio is. this is a turnout election. the governors race is tight. in ohio they have a sophisticated get out the vote operation. that s what the president is trying to do. motivate younger voters in ohio to come out. between redistricting and 2012 which is something the white house is watching. bill clinton added an event for monday, the eve of the election. a rally for kendrick meek after last week s back and forth over whether clinton tried to persuade meek to leave the senate race. what are we to make of this? making up is hard to do, but if you re bill clinton, you can do it by appearing with him on the eve of the election. this is not about meek. this is about the former president trying to help the governor and other democrats running for house seats in tight races because essentially the message that clinton seventh was that kendrick meek can t win. the problem for democrats is it could depress african-american turnout altogether which hurts the democrat running for governor and house seats. this is an attempt to get people energized, particularly african-american photos but the damage may have been done with the message having been sent that meek can t win in the view of the party establishment. this is something that s been going on for weeks. there has been an attempt to get meek out of the race. looked like they were close, but not all the way. let s turn to the house now. some political observers predicting a big, big republican win. they may pick up 70 seats. they need only 39. we talked about republican control of the house. what would next year look like with perhaps a republican house and a democratic senate and democratic president? potentially, lester it could be grid it is lock. house leadership under republican rule will try to focus on cutting government spending. they will pass a health care repeal bill which they know won t ultimately pass the senate and escape the president s veto, but standing on health care and taxes will be the choice of the three areas they focus on. then you re going to have in the house itself a more kentucky republican caucus. probably more liberal democratic caucus. a lot of the more conservative democrats are potentially going to be swept from office here on election day and then the senate if you don t have 60 you don t have control. whether you re a republican or democrat in control by the numbers, if you don t have the filibuster-proof 60 you don t have a lot of control. some say it helps the president in giving him someone else to share the blame for what s not happening in washington. do you buy it? no question about it. i think the president has the ability to get a wake-up call, change the dynamic, try to put republicans on their heels strategically and also, yes, share responsibility for the very difficult choices. what he s being hit with here are the excesses in the voters minds of washington. divided government helps them fend off the argument. what s coming up on meet the press ? [ loving it ] help! what s in your wallet? in california a controversial new measure is on the ballot known as proposition 19 for legalizing, growing and possessing small amounts of marijuana. here s nbc s george lewis. reporter: to legalize pot or not? that s the question california voters will have to answer when they vote on proposition 19. those in favor include rock star. this is why i m here. i m here as a mother and a cannabis user. reporter: those opposed including the obama administration s drug czar. the facts are that legalizing marijuana is something that the obama administration opposes and the facts are it s not going to solve california s prop. reporter: proponents of proposition 19 claim legalizing marijuana would create new tax revenues for california and up to 100,000 new jobs. the cannabis industry intends to do it with the passage of prop 19 and the local supports the efforts. reporter: opponents warn in an upsurge in marijuana abuse and people driving under the influence of pot. i have never seen a legislative proposal or initiative proposal that s received such universal condemnation. reporter: but young people see it differently. i think legalizing marijuana would be a great thing. i would say 9 out of 10 are going to vote yes. reporter: political organizers going after the youth vote are keeping a close eye on proposition 19. one theory is that the notion of legalizing pot will bring out young voters i make some noise! direct from the jersey shore give it up for snooki and the situation! [ strahan ] subway. build your better breakfast. sno snoit. they are the real life ghost hunters featured on the sci-fi channel. they are back for a live hunt at the infamous buffalo central terminal. just who are the i got nervous. just who are these paranormal investigators who search for things that go bump in the night? chris williams and amy brunni are two real life ghost hunters. two girls stuck in a tunnel. reporter: as members of the paranormal society they are members of the team of ghost hunters. we heard stories of inmates being murdered by other inmates. were you around for any of that? do you think this is a way out? reporter: on this mission, chris and amy are investigating a county jail in upstate new york. we started hearing noises. if you re in here, can you come toward us please? reporter: searching for fears that may be lurking around every corner. i felt something get dragged down my arm and there was actually some weight behind it. oh, okay. i just felt a tug on my shirt. reporter: like every investigation these ghost hunters try to figure out if there is a reasonable explanation or not. i felt something tug at my shirt or strap. it kind of freaked me out a little bit. it s not often i go to cases and feel like i m being touched by something. even that is scary. joining us from the buffalo central terminal, chris williams, amy brunni and adam berry. good morning. happy halloween. good morning! so, chris, let me start with you. do you have to be a believer to do what you are doing or does there have to be a sense of skepticism? being a skeptic is a good thing. all of us have had some sort of experience coming into this. i have always been a skeptic right from the start. usually when we go in i don t look at it as haunted right away. i have to wait for something to happen for me to be convinced completely. it s good because we are trying to find other reasons for why these things could be happening. you re trying to debunk these things? you hear and get stories all the time. is part of your job to debunk some of these things? oh, yeah. absolutely. we always go in looking for alternative explanations first. i think our most important goal is we want to have an answer for the client whether it s, hey, here s what s really going on or you have a ghost in your house potentially. tell me about tonight s six-hour life investigation at the buffalo central terminal. it seems like you have a lot ahead of you tonight. we do. six hours of live investigation. we have a panic button on sci-fi.com. people can watch live camera feeds, watch the investigation on sci-fi. if they see anything on the show or anything online they can alert us with the panic button and a team will be sent to investigate the area. there is also an interactive chat set up so people can send in questions and we ll answer them for the night. adam, this is your first live investigation like this. what are your thoughts and feelings going into it? you know, i m really excited for the location. the buffalo central terminal is huge. i wanted to come here for a long time. i m ready to get started. if we could start now it would be great. but it s a little early for ghosts, i think. i have to ask. if you sent me there in the daylight, i would probably be nervous. are you scared at all when you go to these projects and sign up for this stuff? we re scared watching. are you scared or nervous being there? no. for me, i want it to happen. i m looking for things to happen. you know, i m excited. it s all about the thrill of the hunt. the thing is the dark definitely changes the atmosphere a little bit. absolutely. all of us will be like, yeah, we ll walk around now. once the lights are out very different place. exactly. i don t know if i should say, good luck i hope you find something or i hope you don t. but chris, amy and adam, thank you very much for your time. good luck with the investigation. you can catch ghost hunters the halloween live show tonight at 7:00 p.m. on sci-fi. should be fun. now let s send it over to the sich. thanks, jenna. there is no shortage of halloween horror films out this halloween weekend, but no matter how many are released, all horror movies owe a debt of gratitude to a classic that turned 50 years old this year, a movie so powerful that showering hasn t been the same since. on this halloween we send lee cowan back to the bates motel. reporter: it was the low budget thriller of the day back in 1960. a film whose title wasn t even a full word. [ scream ] reporter: but psycho said it all. it still does. it s still scarey. it s still shocking, provocative. reporter: unlike other thrillers like friday the 13th which turns 30 this year, alfred hitchcock chose to shoot his masterpiece in black & white, worried it would be too gory in color. [ screaming ] reporter: it is blood curdling though, for the record it was chocolate syrup, not blood circling the drain. it was so real actress janet lee said she never took a shower again. i really screamed. i could it never dawned on me until that moment how vulnerable and defenseless one is. reporter: 50 years and a lot of shower angst later this remains one of the most iconic images in horror movie history. and if hitchcock had his way, psycho wouldn t have been a movie at all. he was convinced it would be a dud. he wanted it cut down for television until he heard the music. reporter: bernard herman s score became as iconic as the movie itself. only strings and nothing more. when i heard it, of course, i realized he had just taken everybody s guts and used them for music. reporter: the horror is mostly in our minds. we never see poor marian crane being stabbed. we just think we do. today s thrillers like paranormal activity 2 take the lesson to heart. he knew the imagination is far more horrifying than the real thing. long before there was jason or freddy or chucky, there was norman. still, ooh years on it s as chilling as a cold shower. for lee cowan, nbc news, the bates motel. that was back when halloween was scary. it s changed slightly. we re scary. actually you nailed it. do we have a picture of the real snooki? that s the real snooki? they have to come out wide a little bit. that s it. your hair is more that s it. you ve even got the attitude. what about you? you tell me. may i? i just like doing this. this is the one day a year i m allowed to. look at you. when i pull this up, i suck my gut in. i don t have to. until you turn blue actually. it s the one day a year. i m going to do that. that s cool. we have a lot more coming up here on the halloween edition of today. we ll be right back.
