a man notorious in boston and around the world. >> reporter: agents say they found cash and weapons inside his home. they also arrested katherine grieg, his girlfriend. they say bulger was the ruthless leader of i winter hill gang, a mobster so notorious, he was the inspiritation -- inspiration for the character jack nicholson played in "the departed." >> reporter: bulger was on the fbi's 10 most wanted list. they say he was living with greg, as charles and carol gaspo. the -- gasko. in boston, they had just about given up hope. >> i never thought they'd got him. i thought he was gone forever. >> reporter: police describe bulger as diabolical, among the most cold-blooded killers in history. and they say his arrest finally brings relief to families of his victims. >> this pursuit of justice was for them and to hold mr. bulger accountable for the carnage he left behind. >> reporter: the district attorney says bulger will be extradited to face charges. in los angeles, kendis gibson, wjz eyewitness news. >> bulger once worked for the fbi as an informant but he went on the lam when an agent tipped him off that he was about to be indicted. reservist with ties to baltimore taken into custody at the pentagon, is now officially charged in a high-profile shooting spree. vic has more on the case against yonathon melaku. >> he is charged with killings in the washington, d.c. area. he was detained at arlington national cemetery late last week. in custody, federal averages had custody. no one was injured in those shootings. melaku is charged with discharging a firearm, during violence and destroying property. >> the unit is headquartered in baltimore. baltimore city schools are rocked by yet another cheating scandal. top school leaders say they found clear-cut cheating at fort worthington and abbottsons elementary. >> reporter: top city and state school administrators had tough words for those involved in this cheating scandal. >> reporter: investigators studied erasure patterns at two baltimore city elementary schools and found widespread cheating at fort worthington and abingdon elementary. the police chief made the first public comment about it this afternoon. >> we felt that this kind of behavior by adults was a crime towards our kids. that it denoted a lack of belief in our kids, in their progress. that it was an assault on the hard work of the overwhelming majority of our administrators, our teachers, who work so hard. >> and the rules which are applied here in baltimore city are the same rules which are applied statewide. >> reporter: it mirrors a similar scandal at george washington elementary last year. the city has since spent nearly $400,000 to put testing monitors in nearly every city school. >> reporter: dr. montrose' contract is up this week. it is unclear whether he will resign from schools. >> and abingdon elementary was allotted for its performance, even receiving a visit from the u.s. secretary of education. dozens of parents trusted children in his care. a short time ago, a judge returns a verdict for a delaware pediatrician, accused in a horrifying case of child sex abuse. alex demetrick has more. just found dr. earl bradley guilty. he was accused of sexually assaulting patients. the 58-year-old bradley recorded more than 15 hours of video, showing him abusing children, mostly toddlers. he could face 14 years to life for each of the charges. bradley's defense attorney opted for the quick trial so he could appeal the judge's decision allowing the video. >> reporter: bradley was arrested after a 2-year-old girl told her mother the doctor hurt her at his office. a fall off the jones falls expressway continues to recover today, at shock trauma. officer teresa rigby has already undergone multiple surgeries, including facial reconstruction surgery. she was trying to help a driver whose car was disabled when an accident caused her to fall onto the concrete below. it is unclear if the person driving the car will face charges. christopher cotero was struck by a minivan. the officer was taken to the hospital with nonlife- threatening injuries. the 17-year-old driver is traveling with two young children. no one was injured. police say the teen did not stop at a stop sign. warm and humid is one way to describe the weather around town today. here's a live look outside. sun, mixed with clouds. wjz has weather and traffic together. bob turk has the updated numbers from first warning weather. bob? >> and those clouds have actually kept the temperatures down ask kept things more stable this afternoon. not as warm as we expected. as far as showers go, they're very, very rare, hard to find. we've got one little batch. and this is the same spot that we had showers yesterday. right along 95 there. from aberdeen, just up to the east of rising sun. they're all moving to the east and northeast, away from our general region. they'll be up in pennsylvania, northern delaware very shortly. the rest of the region is still very quiet. we'll still see a risk of scattered showers. but right now, nothing showing temperature-wise, it's actually cooler than it was yesterday. 84, 88, the warm spot down in ocean city. but all of those clouds, it did put a cap on the convection. in other words, the thunderstorms and it kept thunderstorms down. in other words, yes, it's still rather humid. and a better chance tomorrow as the front will clear the region and give us a clearer and slightly dryer weekend. first look at the traffic with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. hi, kristy. >> hi, mary. hi, everyone. the north side of the inner loop, already seeing some congestion. we have slowing there. another 15 minutes on the west side inner loop, from southwestern boulevard to liberty road, in that direction. average speed, about 35 miles an hour. as far as 95 goes, it's a smooth ride in the southbound direction. but northbound, some heavy traffic from 32 to 175. and as far as accidents go, walforavenue, in echo dale. and also east 33rd at the alameda. let's take a live look. you can see traffic beginning to take a look there. and we'll take another live look. you can see very, very heavy there. 895 at cochise street. we have -- potee street. we have an accident there in the left-hand lane. this traffic report is brought to you by the cochran firm. if you or someone you know has suffered a personal injury, go to cochranfirm.com. sad news from the national aquarium in baltimore today. one of the new dolphin calves has died. right now, it's not clear how the baby bottlenosed dolphin has died. but the death was sudden, and the calf didn't show any abnormal behavior. the other baby dolphin born in april, does appear healthy at the time. about one in three in the wild. four in captivity don't survive. don't be alarmed if you see large aircraft flying over the area in the next week. nasa says two aircraft will measure gases and particles in the air. in an effort to improve air quality. the space agency says satellites already monitor many components of air pollution. still ahead at 4:00, the walk of shame. lindsay lohan is forced to go back to court again. but did she do anything wrong? the answer may surprise you. and any surprises in the weekend forecast? bob will have the updated forecast coming up. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, more trouble for actress lindsay lohan. she was back in court today, for possible parole violation. the judge told her not to throw parties. the judge said the alcohol violation was not a specific violation of the probation since she she wasn't specifical told not to drink. yet another reason to avoid junk food, specifically potato chips. that's going to be hard for me. harvard researchers followed more than 20,000 people. and found that even one bag of chips per day can result in a pound and a half every four years. other culprits include sugary beverages and processed and unprocessed meat. for the first time ever, the institute of institute of medicine is making recommendations for -- curving childhood obesity in babies and toddlers. a few months ago, doctors told the gutierrez family that xavier and sebastien needed to trim down. xavier was 15 pounds overweight. his brother, even more. >> when he was like 30 pounds, that's when i sat together with the wife and said, we have to start doing something. >> reporter: the institute says obesity prevention needs to start from the beginning when children are infants and toddlers. the recommended report includes limiting television, increasing active play and promoting better sleep routines. >> the idea that a chubbyy is a healthy baby, is one that has been around for a long time. and i think the idea has been that children will outgrow that baby fat. that tends to persist over time. >> reporter: childhood obesity is a huge problem in the u.s. about 10% to 20% of babies and children under 5 are overweight or obese. >> we need to be having these conversations and working on the problems am. >> reporter: that's what the gutierrez family is doing, cutting out junk food and juices. everyone is slimming down. >> we go shopping for healthy foods. and we're on the same track. i'm losing weight as well. so i guess it's a win-win for the whole family. >> reporter: getting healthy now to prevent health problems later. carrie eterrer, for cbs news, new york. >> reporter: and 4-year-old sebastian has lost over 10 pounds so far, and his younger brother has lost 7. a turbulent day on wall street. >> they don't sound too updet setabout it, do they? very heavy rain the next few minutes and maybe even some gusty winds. they will not last very long. elkton, it's right on your doorstep. that's where we're seeing the shower activity. the rest of the state, absolutely nothing going on at this time. looks like it may stay dry for the rest of us. temperature-wise, only, and i say only, 84. dew point has come down. yesterday, our dew point was in the 70s. it's dried out to 66. southwest winds at 12. barometer holding steady. right now, 85 in elkton. that's going to drive quickly with the showers. oakland, locally, temperatures in the low to mid-80s. not that bad of a day. all things considered. we're not talking mid-90s like we had. southwest winds, kind of nice breeze. push these showers out rather quickly. d.c. up to 15. 10 in elkton. and generally, under 5 to 10 miles an hour. we've had a nice little bit of a breeze. along the east coast, shower activity, from pretty much new england down to east texas, as you can see, thunderstorm activity along sort of a quasi frontal boundary. to the west, there is a weak front out into portions of indiana and ohio. that will seta up a chance in our region. you see thunderstorms. again late tonight. more than likely tomorrow, with the front going through. we could see a couple of gusty thunderstorms. and then behind it, clouds and sunshine, but turning dryer and somewhat cooler for the weekend. so actually, the weekend is shaping up to be pretty nice. lower humidities is going to be pretty nice. 76, your bay temp. winds ahead of that front. south winds, 10 to 15 knots. forecast tonight, a scattered shower. maybe a thundershower as you saw in a couple of spots. clouds breaking up for the 70 in the low. warm, humid. pretty good shot we'll see a scattered thunderstorm or two. upper 80s expected. then you start drying out just in time for the weekend. looks pretty easy. don't miss tonight's cbs primetime lineup, tonight it's the mentalist. immediately followed by eyewitness news at 11:00. the orioles return home from their road trip this weekend. and return to wjz. see the birds take on the cincinnati reds sunday afternoon, 1:30, live here on wjz 13. scott pelley has a preview of what's coming up tonight on the cbs evening news. what's the secret to beating the bad economy? [ male announcer ] that's why you need the internet rated #1 for supporting multiple users and devices simultaneously. verizon fios. a network ahead. call the verizon center for customers with disabilities at 800-974-tty/v. it is 4:29, 89 degrees. i'm vic carter. denise is off today. here's what people are talking about tonight. one day after telling people about his plan to wind down the troops in afghanistan, president obama was on the road again. he just paid a visit to troops in upstate new york. danielle nottingham reports on the controversy over the troop withdrawal. >> reporter: president obama spoke with soldiers at fort drum, explaining why he wants to start winding down the mission in afghanistan. >> we're not doing it precipitously. we're going to do it in a -- in a steady way to make sure that the games that all of you helped to bring about, are going to be sustained. >> reporter: the base is home to many soldiers serving on the front lines in afghanistan. and many are happy with the president's decision to withdraw more than 30,000 troops by the end of next summer. the president says progress on the ground made his decision possible and that afghans are on track to take control of their security by 2014. >> reporter: but some lawmakers are criticizing the president's plan. some democrats say the withdrawal is too slow. and some republicans worry we could lose ground. >> with the taliban stumbling, we need a strategy, designed to knock the enemy to the map, not give them a breather. >> reporter: in testimony on capitol hill, america's top military officer called the president's strategy "risky." >> the president's decisions are more aggressive and incur more risks than i was originally prepared to accept. >> reporter: secretary of state hillary clinton says she understands the military wants to have boots on the ground, but says it's time for the u.s. to begin its departure from afghanistan. >> reporter: in washington, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> at least 1500 members of the military have died in afghanistan since the conflict began in 2001. more than 12,000 have been injured. a major development in the case of anthony -- of the casey anthony murder trial in florida. defense attorneys dropped a bombshell today, when they called casey anthony's mother back to the stand. >> reporter: cindy anthony was called to answer questions about suspicious computer searches made from her home. that's when she said she was the one who ret re peated -- who repeatedly searched for clor form. prosecutors say that casey anthony was searching for chloroform. casey anthony is facing charges for killing her daughter. if convicted, she could face the death penalty. >> the anthonys are said to no longer believe casey is innocent. they clarified, saying they want to see justice come out in the case. hate-filled tirade. that's what they are calling a southwest pilot, whose rant was broadcast over a microphone. >> reporter: so much for the "friendly skies" ." -- >> over the top homosexuals and a granny. 11. i mean, think of the odds of that. >> reporter: a southwest pilot went on an obnoxious rant about his colleagues. >> it was just a continuous stream of gays and grannies and grandees. >> what he didn't know was his microphone was on, and the hate- filled tirade could
