WRC Today January 28, 2010

good morning. divided we stand. we face more than a deficit of dollars right now. we face a deficit of trust. president obama implores democrats and republicans to come together to fix the nation s problems, but even his speech was met with mixed reaction, applause from the left, mostly silence from the right. i thought i d get some applause on that one. [ laughter ] this morning, reaction from vice president joe biden and jeb bush, the former republican governor of florida. meeting quinn. a report this morning that elizabeth edwards actually visited the baby her husband fathered with a campaign staffer, as more details come out about john edwards aair and how he tried to cover it up in an explosive, new book. and miracle teen. a full 15 days after that devastating earthquake in haiti, a 17-year-old girl is pulled from the rubble. the unbelievable story of how she survived for so long, today, thursday, january 28th, 2010. captions paid for by nbc-universal television and welcome to today on this thursday morning. i m meredith vieira. and i m matt lauer. all a little bleary-eyed this morning because we stayed up past our bedtime watching the state of the union. 71 minutes long, and president obama used a lot of it to convince the american people he s focused on issue number one, the economy and jobs. the president called jobs his number one focus in 2010, and he told lawmakers he wanted a new jobs bill on his desk without delay. in fact, it took president obama 33 minutes to bring up what was once his administration s biggest priority, and that would be health care. just ahead, some reaction to the speech from both sides of the aisle when we talk to vice president joe biden and former florida governor, republican jeb bush. but let s begin at the white house with nbc s chuck todd, our chief white house correspondent. chuck, good morning to you. reporter: well, good morning, matt. look, it was a very animated president obama last night who delivered his first state of the union that was as much about trying to shore up his own political standing with the american public as it was about laying out his agenda for the coming year. the worst of the storm has passed. reporter: the president took pains to talk about hope at a time when so many americans seemed to have so little. i have never been more hopeful about america s future than i am tonight. despite our hardships, our union is strong. reporter: his speech, as much about the tenor of the debate in washington as the policy. as i m comfortable and contentious as the debates may become, it s time to get serious about fixing the premtz that are hampering our growth. reporter: the president made it crystal clear, he knows what the top issue is for americans. jobs must be our number one focus in 2010, and that s why i m calling for a new jobs bill tonight. reporter: but there were plenty of other priorities financial regulatory rerm, energy, climate change, education, trade, deficit reduction, even gays in the military, and of course, health care. and by now, it should be fairly obvious that i didn t take on health care because it was good politics. i take my share of the blame for not explaining it mor clearly to the american people. reporter: the president reiterated his hope that health care reform would pass soon. don t walk away from reform, not now, not when we are so close. reporter: without mentioning it by name, the president responded to last week s republican upset in massachusetts and voter anger at washington. i m not naive. i never thought that the mere fact of my election would usher in peace and harmony and some postpartum san era, b what frustrates the american people is a washington where every day is election day. reporter: the president did his best to offer republicans something to stand up and cheer about, talking about all the tax cuts he implemented. we cut tax. reporter: that didn t do it. i thought i d get some applause on that one. reporter: but he challenged republicans with ideas he thought could win them over. a new generation of safe, clean nuclear power plants in this country, opening new offshore areas for oil and gas development. we will strengthen our trade relations in asia and with key partners like south korea and panama and colombia. reporter: that line got republicans standing up while democrats stayed seated. and while mr. obama criticized the supreme court s decision allowing corporations to spend more money on politics, it apparently did not sit well with justice samuel alito, who cameras caught silently voicing apparent disagreement with the president, but mr. obama kept coming back to this one theme. right now, i know there are many americans who aren t sure they still believe we can change or that i can deliver it. reporter: and ending up how he started. we don t quit. i don t quit. let s seize this moment to start anew, to carry the dream forward and to strengthen our union once more. reporter: like most presidents after a state of the union, the president is getting out of washington. he and vice president biden are going to go to tampa, florida, today to announce an $8 billion program from the federal government to jump-start the building of light rail around the country. this traveling outside of washington is something you should expect to see a lot of from the president in the coming months, meredith. chuck todd, thank you. joe biden is the vice president of the united states. vice president biden, good morning. good morning, meredith. you heard the president last night. he made it clear he s been listening to the voters when he says that jobs must be our number one focus in2010. he talked about generating jobs through things like tax cuts for businesses, investing in clean energy and rebuilding our infrastructure, among other things, but there are 15 million unemployed in america who were listening last night, many of them, i m sure, wanting to know when they will find employment again. based on what he said last night, what do you say to them? well, i say they re going to start to see unemployment grow this spring you mean employment. employment grow, i m sorry. yore going to see unemployment abate. i think in the spring you re going to see a net increase on a monthly basis of jobs instead of a net loss of jobs, which has occurred the last 20 months or so, and i think you re going to see that. it s going to give people hope. there s the idea that we re going to be able to get 7 million people who are unemployed as a consequence of this recession all reemployed in the ne several months is not going to happen, but what is going to happen is we re going to take care of those who do not have employment by the way we ve been doing it. unemployment insurance and continued help for them. but most importantly, we re going to begin to create jobs. one of the things he did last night was talk about the significant investment we re making in terms of tax credits and loan guarantees to small businesses. they re the ones that generate these jobs. and the focus seemed to be well received by everyone in the chamber, democrats and republicans. he also spent time last night going ter washington. he talked about people s anger and doubts about how washington works. he referenced the same tired battles that have dominated washington for decades. already critics, however, are saying, look, the guy is now part of washington. how long can he separate himself from that? well, you know, look, that s the reason he ran for president, to separate the future from the past, and all of the things that he talked about, about what he disliked about washington, why the american people were cynical, are all the things that as a senator, as a candidate and as a president he has tried to deal with. and one of the things that s most frustrating to him and to me, quite frankly, having served in washington a long time as a united states senator, is the obstructionist ways of the united states senate on the part of the republicans requiring 60 votes, a supermajority for virtually every single solitary initiative we ve had. and that s why he said now that we have 59 votes, it s time for everybody to start taking responsibility. you just can t continue to say no. what are you for? what risk do the republicans run by continuing to say no, by being the party of no? i beg your pardon? i didn t hear you, meredith. what risk do the republicans run if they remain the party of no? well, you know, they may very well reap immediate political benefit by turning off so many voters that the people who want to see change give up and don t show up. i guess that s part of their strategy. but i think what they do is they have to take responsibility for a nation that continues to be mired in unemployment, that continues to have a slow recovery, that continues to be in a position where the american public doesn t have a lot of faith in us, all of us, washington. now, just because it s a loss for the democrats agenda, it doesn t mean it s a win for them, but they seem to think of it that way. and that s what the president s talking about. everybody has to take some responsibility he. speaking of everybody, the president said this isot the time for democrats to shy away from the plate. he told republicans to step up for it, but he also told democrats not to shy away from it, in light of that defeat in massachusetts, senatorial election last week. do you think your colleagues have the stomach to stand firm, given the political pressures on them right now heading into the midterm elections? well, i m confident they do, but everybody has to be reminded. there s a tendency in this town, not just this town, in every legislative capital in the country there s a tendency for elected officials to overreact to events. put it another way had we won that race, what would people be saying? it wouldn t have changed materially one way or another the state of the nation, had we won or lost that race. we d still have 59 votes. the question remains that i think everybody s got to just take a deep breath, take a look at where we are, the progress we ve made. we ve been pulled back from it a bit. essentially, what the president said is, look, the first year, i had to get this nation just back from the abyss, and now it s time to really begin to move, and i think people will step up. but mr. vice president, are you upset by the fact, disappointed that your own son beau, the attorney general in delawa delaware, decided not to run for your seat? a lot of people took that as a sign that the country is really in trouble because he would have been a strong candidate. he would have been, but he didn t run because he has one of the largest pedophile cases in, i suspect at least in the history of the state of delaware, and there was no way he could manage that case where you had a doctor accused of raping and molesting everyone from 2-year-olds to 14-year-old kids in his practice for the last nine years, who s traumatized an entire portion of our state, it s thrown it in doubt. and he realizes his first responsibility, just like his first responsibility is go to war. he s home from iraq. now his responsibility is do his joas attorney general. and finally, i know he is the teacher s pet here, but what grade would you give the president for his addss last night? a-plus, but then again, i m prejudice. let me step back, at least an a. here you go. a fair assessment. vice president joe biden. yeah, really, totally objective. thank you very much for your time this morning. thanks an awful lot, meredith. and now with more, here s matt. meredith, thank you. for the republican side of things, let s bring in jeb bush, the former governor of florida. he s now working with a group that s trying to help republicans regain state legislative majorities. governor bush, good to see you. good morning. thank you, matt. in previewing the speech, you said about the president, if he does show humility and does try to find common ground, there are republicans who will sign up for that. he showed humility. he said he didn t explain health care reform enough. he said some of his pole setbacks were deserved. he talks about tax cuts for families, small businesses, on capital gains, about nuclear energy, area for common ground. so, will you now get behind this president and will other republicans? well, first of all, i don t think it s humble to say that you didn t communicate a message and that s the reason why people opposed the health care plan in front of congress now by a dramatic margin. i think what he couldave said on health care is there are parts of this that we can agree on. let s get that done and then we can haggle over the rest, just as in energy. the president, you correctly state, supported offshore drilling and the development of nuclear power. well, that should be something that the congress begins to act on, because it s in our economic interests. so, for small businesses, the same thing. there were good proposals, and i think republicans could offer additional support if it was bro broad-based and focused on helping the american people and businesses create the jobs, not government. when you look at the other side of the coin, governor, as you work with these groups across the country trying to build legislative seats or win back legislative seats for republicans, did you find things in the speech that are going to help you in that cause? i think the focus needed to be on the economy, and i m hopeful that the president realizes that we need to have long-term economic growth far higher than, you know, what economists project with these current policies will achieve, and that that will create a climate for states and for the federal government to deal with its severe fiscal challenges and will offer hope for americans. if we started to grow at 4% per year instead of 1% or 2% per year, we ll create a lot of jobs, create a lot of income for families, and that should be the focus. and i just don t sense that that what s going on in washington today. there were some awkward moments in that room last night, governor, where it just seemed as if it was so evident the political divide in congress right now. have the battle lines been so firmly drawn? has the turf been so definitely staked out that this idea of republicans and democrats working together right now, especially as the midterm elections come up, is just a fairy tale? i don t think it doesn t have to be a fairy tale. in fact, i think that leaders on both sides of the aisle need to figure out where there is common ground and at least focus on that. and there was enough in that speech last night where you could begin that, on education, on energy policy. and it s one thing to give a good speech. the other thing is to invite people that don t agree exactly with your point of view to build consensus. and if the president shows leadership in that regard, leaders of the republican party and democratic party will have to follow. the president and vice president are headed to your home state today. they re going to florida. they re going to announce this $8 billion federal grant, the stimulus grant for a light rail, a fast rail project. this is something that s important in florida, where unemployment is very high. if you were still governor of that state today, governor bush, would you go and appear with the president and vice president and talk about that program? i would go when the president comes to the state. i think it s more than appropriate. it s not a sign of support. i wouldn t necessarily have embraced the stimulus plan that did not have support in the state and campaign for it and t republicans in a vulnerable position in congress. but is this a good project for the people of florida? i don t even know the details of it. if it s high-speed rail and there s support for it and the federal government is going to take the ridership risk, it would be a good thing. i don t know if that s what this is about. former governor jeb bush. governor bush, nice to have you here. you bet. and now let s get a check of the rest of the morning s top stories from ann curry at the news desk. good morning. good morning, everybody. we begin with amazing news from haiti on wednesday that a teenage girl was found alive under the rubble 15 days after the earthquake. hundreds of haitians shouted for joy as darlene antienne was pulled from the rubble of a collapsed home. she says she was taking a shower when the earthquake struck. more than two weeks later, neighbors finally heard her calling for help. she emerged with a broken leg and was very weak, but was al e alive, happy, shocked and crying. toyota is now extending its massive car and truck recall to europe. the problem, as we ve been reporting, is over gas pedals sticking because the floor mats. toyota says it is also expanding its recall in the u.s. to include an additional 1 million vehicles, including 2008 to 2010 highlanders. today the senate takes a key vote on whether ben bernanke should win a second term as fed chairman. both sides are now sayinghat bernanke will win. meantime there were fireworks in congress on wednesday when treasury secretary timothy geithner was grilled by lawmakers over the aig bailout. nbc s kelly o donnell is at capitol hill, as she was last night. kelly, good morning. reporter: good morning, ann. the president s top money man must have felt like he was taking body blows here over tough questioning about decisions made on bailouts, even before tim geithner was the president s treasury secretary. oh, it got ugly fast. they were given a piggy bank full of taxpayers dollars. reporter: democrats unloaded. just stinks to the high heaven what happened here! reporter: republicans wanted to show timothy geithner the door. my final question is why shouldn t we ask for your resignation? you were the head of the fed and you didn t know anything about it? reporter: and even a famed quote from shakespeare added to the drama. we have come to bury caesar, not to praise him, and i hope you ll appreciate the role of caesar that you re playing. reporter: the issue, in 2008, insurance giant aig got a $182 billion taxpayer bailout. what wasn t known then, aig used $62 billion to pay off losses for big banks. geithner defended that. the consequences of aig failing would have been catastrophic for our economy and for american families and businesses. reporter: geithner s role here is that he was in charge of the new york federal reserve in 2008 when this happened, and the fed was aware of aig s actions, but geithner testified that he did not know. so, you took credit for the decision but not the cover-up. no, no, no. congressman, i m not trying to distance myself from anything. reporter: and geithner remained cool throughout this and said he was even proud of the decisions, believing they actually helped save the american economy. but as you could tell, there are members of congress who aren t so confident that geithner should keep his job. ann? all right. kelly o donnell, who also worked the state of the union last night, pulling double duty for us this morning. thanks a lot, kelly. a dump truck operator has a lot to explain. his truck in an upright position destroyed a pedestrian foot bridge in istanbul, turkey. aye-yi-yi. one person crossing the bridge was hurt and police are still sorting out exactly how this happened. it is now 7:18. let s go back to meredith, matt and al. wow. i thought you put the part man! i thought that bridge was higher. look at that one guy standing there and he just drops. frightening, actually. amazing he wasn t hurt. looked like he had just minor injuries. how are you doing, mr. roker? good, but our friends in the midsection of the country not so good, unfortunately. we have system coming out of the southwest. cold, arctic air coming down at the same time. you get all that moisture coming up from the gulf, you ve got down to the south the risk of strong storms, to the north of that through indiana, ohio on into oklahoma, we re talking freezing rain, snow, sleet. we expect anywhere from half an inch to an inch of ice throughout oklahoma and on into parts of arkansas, as much as a foot of snow in parts of good morning, it s cloudy and chilly. temperature now 37 in washington and we re in the low 30s in montgomery, arlington, fairfax and prince george s county on this thursday morning. we ll have some sun back this afternoon and before a cold front arises, temperatures should soar to the upper 40s. strong winds will bring in some much colder weather by afternoon. should be a partly sunny and cold on friday, and that s your latest weather. meredith? al, thank you. funeral services are being held today for the father of u.s. figure skater nancy kerrigan. the 70-year-old died on sunday after what police describe as a violent struggle with his son, mark. and this morning, we are learning more about his troubled past. nbc s jeff rossen is outside the funeral home in stoneham, massachusetts, for us this morning. jeff, good morning to you. reporter: hi, meredith. good morning to you. solemn day. of course, this will be a private mass here for the family itself. then the public funeral to happen a little later on at a church just down the street near the family s home. of course, nancy kerrigan herself will be here, but as we ve been reporting, her brother, mark kerrigan, will not. he remains in police custody. and this morning his ex-wife is speaking out for the very first time about mark s violent past and his jealousy over his sister nancy. the umbrellas went up wednesday, shielding nancy kerrigan and her family as they rushed into this funeral home. inside, an emotional good-bye to her father, dan kerrigan. hundreds of mourners lined an entire block to attend his wake. how is nancy holding up right now? she s holding up as well as can be expected under the circumstances. it s a tragic loss for her and the entire family. reporter: nancy s brother, mark kerrigan, is now charged with assault in connection with her father s death, accused of choking him during a fight. the judge set bail at $10,000 cash, but the kerrigans haven t bailed him out. andow the state won t let him out to attend the funeral today. what does that tell you about the status of this case and where prosecutors are going? it s not good news for mark kerrigan. prosecutors clearly think this is more than just an accident, and you know, i wouldn t be surprised to see homicide charges on the horizon. reporter: now, mark kerrigan s ex-wife is painting a new picture of mark s troubled relationship with his family. she says mark kerrigan felt he was always living in the shadow of his sister, nancy. any brother or sister would be jealous, not just necessarily mark, but yeah, he was. he had a lot of jealousy in him. and to me, he always seemed like he wanted to prove something to his father. reporter: she says it always bothered mark that his parents would never even come over to visit. he used to tell me it was hard living his life. you know, always having to prove things, always trying to be better. reporter: janet kerrigan says mark would often drink and get violent. according to court papers, she called the police on him and even filed a restraining order. he threw me in the bedroom and he choked me. i literally closed my eyes and just looked up and said to myself, i love you guys, meaning my kids, because i thought i was going to die. i did. reporter: despite mark s problems, family friends say dan kerrigan loved his son, and in the end was there to help. and danny did everything to help his son, and now look what happened to danny. reporter: nancy kerrigan had such a tough and painful road ahead, burying her father today, king care of her mother, who is legally blind, here in massachusetts, lives just around the block. and of course, the big question for this family, meredith, what next for mark? jeff, thank you very much. and just ahead, a report john edwards wife met with the child he fathered with a mistress. 7:26 is your time now on this thursday, january 28, 2010. today metro riders could find out if service cuts or a fare hike could be in the better, physical as well as spiritual changes as well. plus, manners in the modern age. some of the lessons we grew up with seem to be lost on our children, who now spend so much time interacting by cell phones and computers. coming up, the new approach to teaching your family etiquette. but we begin with the stunning claims made in a new book about one-time presidential candidate john edwards. it was written by a former aide and will now come out on saturday earlier than planned. nbc s lisa myers broke that story last week that edwards admitted that he is the father of his mistress s daughter. lisa, good morning to you. reporter: good morning, meredith. by any measure, this book is salacious, full of tawdry details about sex, betrayal and countless lies, and as brutal as it is on john edwards, it s also brutal on elizabeth, who it says became intoxicated by power and sometimes looked the other way. the smiles of john edwards and rielle hunter, captured here in 2006, belie the chaos and tragedy caused by their affair. this new book by edwards former personal aide, andrew young, contains new allegations about edwards betrayal of his cancer-stricken wife. it s a great speech. [ laughter ] can you read it? yes, i can read it. you can? yes. reporter: the author claims john edwards took his campaign videographer rielle hunter to the family estate in chapel hill, where ty made love in the edwards bed. he writes, eriel talked about living in the mansion once mrs. edwards was out of the way and another time said she felt like the first lady after sleeping with the presidential candidate. they also say he and eriel would eventually marry on a rooftop in manhattan with music from the dave matthews band. it just gets thicker and uglier and more evil. reporter: she allegedly called him love lips, and behind her back, he reportedly called her a crazy [ bleep ] and said there was only a one in three chance that he could be the father of her daughter, quinn. young claims that edwards suggested she get an abortion, but that she thought the baby she was carrying was some kind of golden child, the rein karnited spirit of a buddhist monk who was going to help save the world. young claims that only hours before this 2007 debate, john edwards called and asked him to publicly claim paternity of hunter s child, citing the presidential campaign, their friendship and his wife s terminal canc. young says edwards told him, i know you re mad at elizabeth, andrew, but i love her. can t let her die knowing this. young claims edwards was distracted and stumbled in the debate. we can actually make absolutely certain, starting here and now that we make this country better than we left it. thank you. leave it better than w started. [ laughter ] we all know what you meant. i thought you did. reporter: six days later, the national enquirer reported hunter s pregnancy. young took responsibility, declaring he was the father of her child. more than two years later, last week, edwards admitted that he is quinn s father. seems to most of us to be such a spectacular, vial thing to do, to take your friend who s married and have him confess to impregnated your mistress. it s almost unbelievable. reporter: young writes about how he covered up the affair, hiding hunter for months, mostly in lavish homes in california. and young claims heater found a sex tape, john edwards and a naked pregnant woman photographed from the naval down, engaged in a sexual encounter. despite john edwards betrayal, young says the senator was genuinely grief-stricken when he found outelizabeth s cancer was back and incurable. the biopsy showed that the cancer had returned. it was malignant. reporter: but young claims they both quickly turned to political calculation. within days, they agreed that this diagnosis would generate positive publicity after frustrating months when the press ignored him. they actually believed that cancer would give the senator s poll numbers a boost. young claims elizabeth dealt with her husband s ongoing affair by alternately looking the other way, tracking his every move or yelling and crying and threatening suicide. in a statement, a okesman for elizabeth edwards said the book contains many falsehoods and exaggerations. the allegation that she sought to politicize her cancer is unconscionable, hurtful and patently false. you can t stop people from saying what they will. i think it s, frankly, if i had one word to describe it, i d say it s sad. reporter: others also have challenged some of young s claims, his credibility and his motives. young admits he wrote this book at least in part for the money. he says the senator promised him a job for life, then betrayed him. john edwards spokesperson says he has not seen the book and will not mment, meredith. i m sure they re going to sell a lot of books. lisa myers, thank you very much. it is 7:36, and for more, here s matt. meredith, thank you. as lisa myers first reported last week, john and elizabeth edwards, who have been married for 32 years now, are now separated. people magazine s washington correspondent sandra soberi-westfall, interviewed her sister for people s next issue. sandra, good morning. good morning. where do i start? let s start by talking about elizabeth edwards. i mean, this is someone who s dealt with so much over the last several years, a health crisis, headlines from this scandal and now it seems as if it keeps regurgitating and getting worse. you talked to her sister for this article. how did she say she s holding up? for three years, she s dealt with this sort of unraveling lie that s come out in pieces and now there are more pieces to come. but nancy, the sister, told me that she s actually doing really well, that she s feeling a lot stronger now that she s decided to break free and reclaim her identity. her healths pretty good for somebody with stage four cancer. she s energetic and looking forward to a new future. she s looking forward to getting the drama behind her. and now it has been confirmed that they ve separated. i guess some people might ask the question why now. why did this separation come now when this story has been brewing for so long? you know, it was sort of a build-up of distrust that just became toxic. i mean, even as recently as weeks before christmas, she met with this baby, quinn, brought her christmas presents, was really making an attempt to adjust their family to the new normal that john s infidelity had forced upon her, but it just there was just too much distrust after three years. you say that. i mean, this meeting of christmas, the bringing of christmas gifts to quinn by elizabeth edwards, it s almost surreal to imagine that she somehow finds it in herself to go and visit this child that has been fathered by her husband with his mistrs and try to have some sort of even surface relationship. as we were told, she was trying to lay the path for her own children, who she knew after she was gone were going to have a relationship with their half sibling because john was committed to being in the child s life. and elizabeth knows she s not going to be here as long as she had hoped, and she s going to leave children behind who need an intact family. well, let s talk about those children, the edwards children, not quinn here, i m talking about cate and claire and jack. what did nancy say about how they re doing? as well as can be expected. it s hard. jack doesn t talk very much and claire has asked for permission to confide in a girlfriend, and had back in the summer when they were first told by their father about this half sibling. it was back in the summer. john said, you know, i intend to have a relationship with her. i hope you will, too, but i m not going to force that on you. let me know when you re ready. john edwards released a statement on the separation, and it came out yesterday. here it is. it says, it is an extraordinarily sad moment, but i love my children more than anything and still care deeply about elizabeth. i mean, it s hard not to notice the words care deeply, as i love my children, i care deeply about elizabeth. that doesn t say good things for the future of this relationship. any chance of reconciliation? declutter your life. what do you mean by that? look at all the junk we own, seriously, stuff. things you haven t worn, things you think are important. i came back thinking the things i had recently purchased around the holidays, are they at all important? and you come back and look at the wealth that we have, this clutter. get rid of it. give it to people who might like it. improves things aesthetically, but also makes you feel better. walking, that s obvious. improve your exercise. improve your daily diet to live better. go back to the basics. we talk about the fact that people in impoverished neighborhoods can t get decent food. go back to a can of beans. that may sound rudimentary, in fact, but basic, basic, basic foods can nurture all of us. we re going to put more of these on our website. drink much more water, be mindful of your breathing. yep. so many people walk around pent up, holding their breath. and find one thing, no matter how lousy your day is, whether it s visual, auditory or whether you smell it, o thing that you can put in your pocket and say that was today s moment. in other words, stop and smell the roses. you ve got it. nancy snyderman, thanks. good work in haiti. thank you. coming up next, teaching your kids manners in modern times. just ahead, the duggars give us a first look at baby number 19. we re going to find out how she s doing when the family joins us for an exclusive live interview. 7:55 is your time right now 37 degrees right now, big weather changes are coming up. good morning, in the news for today, a heads up for drivers in tyson s corner, there will be a major detour tomorrow night. southbound cambridge road will be closed. if you want to reach cambridge road you ll have to loop around. tai shan, the new giant panda will leave for the japan next tuesday. on saturday, a farewell party will be held at the zoo from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., next wednesday is the very last day for visitors to see tai shan. we have been talking about this cold wave of weather coming our way. under the cloud cover, light picture there under wilson bridge. we re right a little above freezing in prince george s, montgomery and prince george s county and elsewhere as well. winds will increase out of the southwest, we should warm into the upper 40s by early afternoon, then a cold front coming through by mid afternoon may trigger a sprinkle or a flurry and that will usher in some much colder weather. light snow with a couple of inches possible. a live look here along i-95 northbound traffic. all of a sudden within just the last 60 seconds or so, the southbound side started to back up. it appear that there s going to be a wson bridge is okay, no accidents on 270. jerry, thank you, we ll have more news, weather and trafblg for you in just 25 8:00 now on this thursday morning, the 28th of january 2010. everyone bundled up tight on a crisp morning here in rockefeller plaza. and it is snowing here. we have come out to say hey to the folks who have come from far and wide. i m meredith vieira along with matt lauer and al roker. and just ahead, the newest member of one of america s largest families. i m talking about josie brooklyn, jim bob and michelle duggar s 19th child. there she is. she was born in december at only 25 weeks, 3 1/2 months premature. they had a scare because of that. we re going to find out how she is doing today when the family introduces us to their little girl for the very first time. looking forward to that. i was walking in, i didn t hear your beginning did you mention the snow? we have new details about that. first, we re going in to ann curry for a check of the headlines. thank you, meredith. good morning once again, everybody. in his state of the union address last night, president obama said he is making job growth the top priority this year. he said despite our hardships, our union is strong. he urged congress to pass a second jobs bill, vow to take on wall street greed and washington gridlock and said he would not give up on health care reform. in reaction, republicans said the nation cannot afford the president s agenda. more now on the miracles still happening in haiti. nbc s michelle kosinski is in port-au-prince this morning with more on this. michelle, good morning. reporter: good morning, ann. a good way to describe the situation right now is a continued difficulty with even the most basic distribution of supplies. but in many ways here, little by little, day by day, people are starting to put the pieces of their lives back together. a 15-year-old girl was pulled back into the world yesterday, 15 days after the earthquake leveled her home on top of her. but a part of the daily fight for survivors here under broiling sun is simply to wait with thousands for food and water. so daunting a situation that tuesday the world food program, after trying all day, ended up having to abandon a plan to hand out a million meals for lack of security. for others, hopes of survival havended. at the site of the once grand montana hotel where six members of a team from lynn university in florida remain buried, the effort has turned to recovery. the university says it is now time to grieve. but here in the marketplaces, where color blooms and where more people finally have a little money again, thanks to banks opening, some corners feel almost normal, at least for those moments, a time to take a breath again. several organizations put it this way, that the goal has been to move the situation in haiti from the emergency room into the recovery room. they say there are some signs that that is happening now. ann? that is nice news. all right. thanks a lot, michelle kosinski, for your report. in what appears to be a significant development in the war in afghanistan, a large pashtun tribe is working in a partnership to bypass the afghan government. in exchange, the u.s. says it will send $1 million directly to tribal leaders for development projects. meantime, speaking today in london at an international conference on afghanistan, president hamid karzai says that she is going to try to bring the taliban into a political settlement of the conflict. overseas markets are higher this morning. cnbc s erin burnett is at the new york stock exchange. and erin, there s a lot of attention on both ford and the ipad today. there certainly are, ann. when you look at ford, the first profit for ford if about four years, and the company says it will be profitable this year, despite what it calls a significantly challenging business environment. the good news doesn t stop there. on earnings, proctor & gamble, eastman kodak, colgate all coming out with way better-than-expected numbers. i guess it s the building blocks of growth, more toothpaste, detergent being sold. and that s contributing to a bullish feel. financial stocks are also higher. the president last night saying he is not interested in punishing banks, something wall street is applauding. and last but not least, the water cooler talk of the day will be about the ipad. is it really the second coming of the iphone? will it crush the kindle? a lot of people are curious about it, and it s a key question for a company that keeps a lot of jaded investors believing in the stock market. back to you, ann. iike the way you put it, is it going to be all that? erin burnett, thank you so much. on a serious note, noted boston historian howard zin, an early opponent of the vietnam war, died of a heart attack. zin, who appeared on this broadcast last month, wrote a people s history of the united states, a book about ordinary americans who changed history. he wanted his students, in his words, to be more prepared to relinquish the safety of silence, more prepared to speak up and act against injustice wherever they saw it. howard zin was 87 years o. it is now 8:05. let s go back outside to matt and meredith. our thoughts are with his family. sad. it s very sad, ann. great man. it s really coming down, mr. roker. it is, but the good news is, it will end, eventually. hey, we ve got some nice folks here, ladies from the houston simplify. you re performing at carnegie hall tonight? yes. little josie is 7 weeks old today, and that s a lot to celebrate, and she s doing very good. she has already doubled in weight. so, she now weighs 2 pounds and 4 ounces. yeah, i understand she was born at, i guess it was 1 pound, 6 ounces, and she was on a ventilator until just recently, but things are definitely seem to be looking up. i want to take you back to that day that she was born, december 10th. you had been in some difficulty prior to that, michelle. you had been brought into the hospital a few days earlier suffering from a gall stone and then you developed preeclampsia, high blood pressure, and the doctors decided they had to take the baby within 30 minutes. can you descbe that day to me? oh, i think that day was one of the most scary moments of my life, realizing that little josie was going to be born early, and we didn t know i mean, i was just scared to death thinking here she s only, you know, she s 15 weeks away from her due date, will she survive? and it is amazing how they can sustain life at such a tiny, tiny age. and so, arkansas children s hospital has done a wonderful job, and umas. they just is amazing what they can do with little babies. jim bob, what are your memories of that day? because here you are with your wife and your unborn child, and i guess there must have been some fear that you could possibly lose both of them. yes. preeclampsia happens to about 5% to 8% of all pregnancies in all women, but we thoug that maybe we would be able to keep the egnancy going for many more months, maybe 3 1/2 months, so she could be full-term, but it was so scary when she had to deliver early, but that is the cure for preeclampsia is to deliver the baby. so, anyway, we i know when they came in and said they needed to deliver in 30 minutes it was one of the scariest moments of our lives, but we really felt like that was what we needed to do, and we re so thankful that michelle s doing great and the baby s doing great, and we re just so blessed. you ve moved most of the family to little rock to be closer to josie so they have a chance to see her, whether in pictures or physically. i know, jill, you re old enough to visit your little sister. how would you describe her? yes, ma am. she is so precious. i think just seeing a baby that small, it s amazing. i just cry like every time i go there. just, she s so little, and her like her whole hand can barely wrap around my pinky. so, just seeing that precious little life and that it can be sustained at that age, and it s beautiful. i know you are used to newborns around your house, but is there something special about josie? there is. she s a little doll. i mean, she s so tiny. i was actually out of the country when she was born, so i had heard, oh, she s 1 pound, 6 ounces. i was like, wow, but i couldn t imagine the size. and trying to figure that out in my mind, and then whenever i finally got to see her, she is itty-bitty. she s my little itty-bitty. but she s so precious and beautiful. yeah. she looks beautiful to me as well. jim bob, is she out of the woods at this point? i know with preemies, it s pretty much a day-by-day experience up until the time when they reach the moment of their true birth date, which i think for her would have been march 18th or close to that. correct. normally, they keep them in the hospital until when they would have been born, and they take about three steps forward and two steps back. they say never trust a preemie. she ll do good for a few days and then her saturation level or heart level will go down for a few minutes, then it will go back up, and that s just typical for a preemie. but overall, she s done very well and she s gained a pound and probably within the next month she ll probably gain another pound or two, and we look forward to the day that we can bring her home to join the rest of the bunch. and we look forward to that as well. jim bob, michelle and the rest of the duggar gang congratulations on baby josie. i get the j part, and the middle name is brooklyn. we love that here in new york. thank you guys very much. thank you, meredith. thank you. and by the way, 19 kids and counting: special duggar delivery airs saturday, january 31st, on tlc. coming up, what parents need to know about manners in today s digital age. this chevy traverse has better mileage than honda pilot. the all-new chevy equinox has better mileage than honda cr-v. and chevy malibu has better mileage than accord. however, honda does make something that we just can t compete with. it s self propelled. chevy. compare us to anyone and may the best car win. has focused on making the best-tasting. sour cream for over four generations. it s made with farm-fresh cream that s 100% natural. no preservatives. and no added hormones. do-do a dollop of daisy new tylenol cold rapid release gels day and night release medicine fast to relieve painful coughs, congestion and sore throats. so you can feel better. pretty. [ laughter ] sorry! it just goes to show it s never too late to work on your manners. all right, sara, thanks. let s bring in dineen milner, contributing editor to parenting magazine. good morning to you. good morning. nice to see you. it all starts at home. if you want good manners for your kids, you ve got to practice good manners. it really does count. what you do in front of your children is what they ll model when they go out in front of other people. and 72% of women, moms, in a recent survey we did say they are worried about technology and the fact that their kids spend so much time looking at a screen and not at another person negatively impacting their etiquette and their manners. how do they deal with that? absolutely. you tell them they need to unplug and sit down at the table and communicate. when my children come to the table for dinner, one comes with the ds, one comes with a text and one comes with a book. and everybody knows, you have to drop that on a tle over there, because when we re sitting at the table, we re here to communicate with one another. it s easy to deal with please and thank you. we all ask our kids to do that. it s harder to define and accomplish treating others with respect. right. how do you suggest people go about that? well, you have to make sure that it s not a nicety. you re not saying yes, ma am and no, sir and hello, mr. lauer, because it s something nice to do. it s what you re supposed to do. i live in the south, and children never come to you and say anything other than hello, sir, how are you. that is the standard, and that s what needs to be done everywhere. and sara, you can jump in on this, too. every once in a while, you re going to have lapses, your kids are going to make a mistake, commit faux pass. do you as a parent correct them right in front of people, in front of strangers, do you wait for a private moment? how would you suggest this? one thing faye had said, you take the moments faye was the teacher in theideo you take the moments they re doing well and talk about the things they could be doing wrong, rather than in the moment, because they feel embarrassed. and i agree with that, and there s something to be said about talking to your children before they get into those situations. if you go to the grocery store and your child sees someone in a wheelchair, you ve already our time right now is 8:26, we have 37 degrees here in the nation s capital, i m joe krebs and in the news for today. metro riders could find out if service cuts or a fare hike are in the works. they re expected to vote on a money saving plan, one possibility is a 10 cent fare hike. board members will also select a new chairman to replace jim graham. we ll take a break and kwab. changes on the way, we ll have a rapid warmup in the upper 40s by the afternoon and the cloud cover and turning much colder with strong winds out of the northwest, teens tomorrow morning, partly sunny and cold friday and some light snow, maybe a couple of inches in the metro area on saturday. a live look here along south capital street. continue to run very slowly this morning. elsewhere, the trip around town to the american legion bridge right now, outer loop and inner loop between tyson s corner and 270 spur looking good. we ll have more, news, weather and traffic in about 25 minutes. now we re going to go back to the today show after we take this short break. 8:30 now on a thursday morning. it is the 28th day of january 2010. that s a great shot right there. it looks like it s snowing up and down. wow! and you know what? it is. it s actually kind of fun out here. it is. i have to say. it s weird to think that just a couple days ago we were in the mid-50s here in new york city, and now we re down in the 30s, right at the freezing mark. snowing little bit, but al says not much accumulation. nope. you brought a hat out this half hour. well, you know, you have no hair, it goes right to your scalp and gets cold quickly. bingo. out on the plaza, i m matt lauer along with meredith vieira, al roker and ann curry. and coming up this half hour, a reported visit to tiger woods while he s in sex rehab, or sex addiction rehab from his wife elin. so, what might she be thinking about in terms of the future of their marriage? all right, peter alexander. peter, thank you very much. up next, the problems with pa announcer: take it off today is brought to you by truvia natural sweetener. honestly sweet. this morning on take it off today, how healthy is your pasta? if tonight s dinner plans include diving into a big bowl of linguini, pay attention. that meal could put your waistline in hot water. joy bauer is today s nutritionist. good morning to you. good morning, meredith. this number that the average american consumes 20 pounds of pasta a year, that s a lot. we love pasta. and we tend to like the white stuff, maybe with refined flour, so it s missing a lot of the nutrients, right? it s unfortunate. here s the story. standard, white pasta is literally refined wheat flour. so, when you look at wheat, there are three critical components. there s the nutrient-rich bran, there s the action-packed, nutrient-rich germ on the inside, and then there s the starchy endosperm. during the milling process, when we make this average, everyday pasta, we strip away all of the key nutrient-rich players, so we re left with the white starch. they do have a handful of b vitamins and iron. that s why we call it enriched wheat flour, but it s only a fraction of the goodness that was originally there from that bran and germ. plus, we re eating too much of it every time we sit down to have a serving. this is what a proper serving size should look like, right? yes. this is 1 1/2 cups cooked, and you can push the envelope to about two cups, but it s about 450 calories when you put a nice, clean marinara sauce on it. now this is what you get at a restaurant. an average serving at a restaurant is four cups cooked. and when you put the sauce on, it s well over 1,000 calories. and when you consider it s the equivalent of white bread, you would be sitting down and eating a plate of 12 slices of white bread, with, obviously, a little bit of sauce. that s disgusting. but puts itnto perspective, right? absolutely. so, you say you have to go for 100% whole grain pasta, right? right. the good news is, there are a lot of great strategies for when we make pastas at home. so, this group is 100% whole grain pasta, and it has the bran, the germ, all of the fido nutrients and extra fiber, and we knowhat whole grains helps drive down the risk of heart disease, blood pressure, type 2 diabetes. and the nice part, because of the fiber, is it will keep you fuller for longer, compared to that big plate of white starch. yeah, but you know what, it doesn t taste the same. you know what, admittingly, it is a little bit chewier, it s hardier, it s nuttier, but the good news is that that nuttier flavor sometimes compliments certain sauces. and from brand to brand, they taste pretty different. so, if you didn t like one brand, and i got a huge list on the website right, try another? try another. and you don t have to just stick with whole wheat flour. you could go to things like camute and quinoa, and there s gluten-free brown rice flowers that makes a nice noodle. so explore around, because it s worth it. what do you need to make sure is on the label? the simplest way is to look for this stamp that the government puts out. and it should say 100% whole grain. otherwise, you ve got to be savv and check the ingredients, look for the word whole or look for things like oat flour or brown rice flour or quinoa, because those are automatically whole grain, and again, that list is on the website. okay. what do you think i m sorry, go to this first. this is another category that s become incredibly popular. it s a whole grain white blend. white. so, it s sort of the ultimate compromise. it s a mix between that white regular stuff and that excellent whole grain. and this is good for people who are not ready to meet that leap over to the good stuff or kids sometimes, right? it s very well accepted with kids. and these are the two mainstream brands. and they re pretty much available in mainstream supermarkets and in a lot of different shapes as well. and what do you think of the colored stuff that s out there? oh, so, this the vegetable, i guess, pasta. i m not too hip on this, and here s why. it s made with white pasta and only a tablespoon or two of dried or pureed vegetables. and just to give you an idea of how much, this is a half-cup serving. this is how many vegetables are in there, two baby carrots, and you re getting white flour. so, i m not picking on these brands, because these very same brands are in the better categories also, but people shouldn t be fooled. better off to get the whole wheat pasta and put veggies on it, i guess. definitely. marinara sauce, broccoli. or if you like your pasta plain, eat the vegetables on the side. did i jump over something? i didn t mean to. this is an interesting, unique blend. this starts with white pasta, white flour, semolina. it s barilla plus. it s the first of its kind, but i think a lot of brands are going to follow suit, though. what they do is incorporate lentils, check peas, barley, flax seeds. so, even though it starts with a white flour base, it becomes incredibly nutrient-dense from all of th oer interesting things that are blended right into the mix. and i also like that it comes in things like macaronis and bow ties, so it s a good one for kids as well. a lot of options. okay, there you go, the unhealthy pasta and gets better as we go down the line, except for that one. joy bauer, thank you v host: could switching to geico really save you 15% or more on car insurance? host: did the waltons take way too long to say goodnight? mom: g night john boy. g night mary ellen. mary ellen: g night mama. g night erin. elizabeth: g night john boy. jim bob: g night grandpa. elizabeth: g night ben. jim bob: elizabeth: g night jim bob. jim bob: g night everybody, grandpa: g night everybody. jim bob: g night daddy. vo: geico. 15 minutes could save you 15% or more. we re back now at 8:48. and now, more of our special series silent warriors, a behind-the-scenes look at the u.s. navy s.e.a.l.s. this week, we ve shown you its members physical and mental toughness, but what impact does their work have on their families? nbc s chris jansing sat down for a revealing conversation with four s.e.a.l. wives. reporter: navy s.e.a.l.s have a reputation the strong, silent, heroic type, which is why the idea of being married to one can be so appealing. it was very glamorous. you know, he d ask me what i did that day, and i was like, oh, i slept until noon and got my nails done. and i was like, what did you do today? well, i scaled a ten-story building and flew through a window. i m like, all right, good to know. reporter: mary, stacy, kascha and casey are all married to s.e.a.l.s, and they did not go through your typical courtship. our first date, we did a mild swim and then he s like, oh, you want to do a six-mile hike? reporter: and they have anything but typical marriages. he s home, he s gone. he s home, he s gone. there s never any continuity in your life. reporter: their husbands are away 250 days a year. and because their high-risk operations are usually secret, s.e.a.l. wives are often left to wonder. we don t know what it is that they re doing, what type of missions they are. reporter: and that s when the glamorous life can get a rude reality check. they were hit with an ied, and it broke all four lower leg bones, compound frankt yours. he said, babe oh, my gosh, i never cry about it. he said i m okay. i broke my legs and i m coming home. reporter: fear, these women will tell you, is the elephant in the room before every deployment. i had to know what he wanted in case he didn t come home. those are hard conversations to have, and i was pregnant at the time, too, so. and i d make him write a letter to each of the kids so that the kids have that before he leaves, just you know, any kind of final words if something were to happen. reporter: they call themselves the wives club. i would drop everything and anything to help these women, and vice versa. reporter: more than friends, they forged an unbreakable bond, not just with each other, but with each other s husbands. they re going to be the one that might be responsible for saving my husband s wife, to make sure that my kids still have a daddy to come home to. reporter: now the navy is studying ways to build on that bond. they ve developed new support programs, from counseling to vacation getaways, to reduce the strain of long deployments. the stronger and better your wife is, the better s.e.a.l. you are. for them to not have to worry about home means they can focus on the mission at hand. reporter: vital missions with a lot of support from strong women at home. for today, chris jansing, nbc news, los angeles. coming up next on a thursday morning, actress julianne moo one in six children in the u.s. live in poverty, and for more than 90 years, save the children has provided families and communities with tools needed to break that cycle. oscar-nominated actress julianne moore is the organization s ambassador, and she is with us now, along with five special young ladies, emily, angel, rafaele, tina and stella. did i pronounce that right? well, especially for our friends in the midwest and the plains, it s going to be very, very roh. in fact, this low pressure system comes out. yocan see winter storm watches, warnings, winter weather advisories from the southwest all the way to the east coast, all part of a srm system that s coming through texas, bringing moisture up from the gulf, arctic air comes down from the north. the two collide and you ve got ice and snow all along that passage. so, as far as amounts are concerned, we re talking about anywhere from half an inch to an inch of ice from oklahoma on into arkansas. we re looking at some areas picking up up to a foot of snow in the panhandle of texas, and we re also exp good morning, that storm will be passing south of the washington metropolitan area late friday night into saturday, we may get a little bit of snow out of it. ght now it s chilly, we re in the mid and upper 30s. a little sun back this afternoon a cold front coming through, by mid afternoon and it might trigger a flurry or a passing strin kl as it pushes in. before that we should make it into the upper 40s, strong gusty winds b that s your latest weather. natalie? al, thank you. now to a bombshell new book on john and elizabeth edwards, who after 32 years of marriage acknowledged wednesday they are now legally separated. it also comes a week after the former presidential candidate admitted to fathering a child with his mistress. nbc s lisa myers first broke news of their separation last week. lisa, good morning. reporter: good morning, natalie. by any measure, this book is salacious. it s full of tawdry details about sex, betrayal and countless lies. and as brutal as it is about john edwards, it s also tough on elizabeth, who the book says became intoxicated by power and sometimes looked the other way. the smiles of john edwards and rielle hunter, captured here in 2006, belie the chaos and tragedy caused by their affair. this new book by edwards former personal aide, andrew young, contains new allegations about edwards betrayal of his cancer-stricken wife. it s a great speech. [ laughter ] can you read it? yes, i can read it. you can? yes. reporter: the author claims john edwards took his campaign videographer rielle hunter to the family estate in chapel hill, where they made love in the edwards bed. young writes, eriel talked about living in the mansion once mrs. edwards was out of the way and another time allegedly said she felt like first lady after sleeping with the presidential candidate. the book also claims the senator said he and erie ye rielle wouly marry on a rooftop in new york city to music from the dave matthews band. it s evil. she reportedly called her love and he called her an expleti expletive. reports claim john edwards wanted hunter to get an abortion, but that she thought the baby she was carrying was some kind of golden child, the reincarnated spirit of a buddhist monk who was going to help save the world. young claims that only hours before this december 2007 debate, john edwards called and asked him to publicly claim paternity of hunter s child, citing the presidential campaign, their friendship, and his wife s terminal cancer. young says edwards told him, i know you re mad at elizabeth, andrew, but i love her. i can t let her die knowing this. young claims eards was distracted and stumbled in the debate. we can actually make absolutely certain starting here and now that we make this country better than we left it. thank you. leave it better than we started. [ laughter ] we all know what you meant. i thought you did. reporter: six days later, the national enquirer reported hunter s pregnancy. young took responsibility, declaring he was the father of her child. more than two years later, last week, edwards admitted that he is quinn s father. seems to most of us to be such a spectacular, vial thing to do, to take your friend who s married and have him confess to impregnating your mistress. it s almost unbelievable. reporter: young writes about how he covered up the affair, hiding hunter for months, mostly in lavish homes in california. and young claims he later found a sex tape john edwards and a naked pregnant woman photographed from the naval down engaged in a sexual encounter. despite john edwards betrayal, young says the senator was genuinely grief-stricken when he found out elizabeth s cancer was back and incurable. the biopsy showed that the cancer had returned. it was malignant. reporter: but young claims they both quickly turned to political calculation. within days, they agreed that this diagnose nice would generate positive publicity after frustrating months when the press ignored him. they actually believed the cancer would give the senator s poll numbers a boost. young claims elizabeth dealt with her husband s ongoing affair by alternately looking the other way, tracking his every move or yelling and crying and threatening suicide. in a statement, a spokesman for elizabeth edwards said the book contains many falsehoods and exaggerations. the allegation that she sought to politicize her cancer is unconscionable, hurtful and patently false. you can t stop people from saying what they will. i think it s, frankly, if i had to have one word to describe it, i d say it s sad. reporter: others also have challenged young s credibility and his motives. young admits that he wrote this book, at least in part, for the money. he said the senator promised him a job for life, then betrayed him. john edwards spokesman says he has not seen the book, natalie, and will not comment. all right. lisa myers there reporting from washington. thanks so much, lisa. so, how has elizabeth edwards been coping with john edwards admission of paternity? sandra sobieraj westfall is washington correspondent for people magazine and she interviewed elizabeth s sister for the upcoming issue. sandra, good morning. so, you had a chance to talk to nancy, elizabeth s sister, and she told you that elizabeth reportedly said she h it and she wants her life back. why did she come to this decision now to legally separate from john? you know, we re told that it was three long years of a build-up of distrust, and her husband was telling her the truth slowly and in pieces, and sometimes only after it first appeared in the tabloids. so, you know, that s a long time for a marriage to weather that slow trickle of distrust. even this issue of paternity. i mean, as far as we know, she says she only i believe it was in the summer, learned that john over the summer, they had the dna test. yes. and we were told the cast of characters, as you see from lisa s piece, is so over the top. and andrew young claiming paternity first off. that elizabeth felt she needed scientific proof before she could really accept it as fact, and at that point over the summer, they sat the children down, jack and emma claire and told them the news. and how did the other children take it? you re talking about the older child, cate, and emma claire and jack are the younger twins. they re 9 and 11, and you know, jack is a boy right. and he s not talking much. he keeps a lot of it in, to himself. but emma claire did ask for permission to confide the secret in a friend so she could have somebody to talk about it with, and the parents prepared that family so that the friend could help emma claire through it. meanwhile, john edwards parents, though, have met with quinn, with the baby. his parents are in their they ve embraced the child? they ve embraced her. they say she is a very precious gift and she ll be our granddaughter just like our other grandchildren. what about these reports that elizabeth edwards has had divorce papers drawn up? does it appear at this point that she s going to proceed down that road? well, in north carolina, you have to be separated for a year. that separation started as of december 30th. so, she really doesn t have to do anything for another year. and we re told that, you know, whether she does or not will depend largely on her health. and john edwards released a statement on the separation yesterday. it reads, it is an extraordinarily sad moment, but i love my children more than anything and still care deeply about elizabeth. how often is he really seeing his family now, given all that s happened? well, don t forget, she s sick. and while she has a lot of energy, i m told, and she s doing a lot of things, she still crashes and crashes harder than most working moms. right. and so, he does have to be there a lot to take care of, you know, the kids carpooling and to school activities and to sports. over the weekend, she was at jack s basketball game, but he does step in and do his share. so, he s living in the barn on their property part time and then his official residence is at their beach house, but he is there quite a bit. and what about rielle, the mistress? we know she lives in charlotte, a home purchased by him, about two hours away. is he allowed and granted access frequently to quinn? well, we re told for three years it was a deal-breaker with elizabeth. he has to have no contact with rielle. it s done through attorneys. but they have an agreement now, signed custody agreement, where he s allowed liberal visitation. so, he has spent considerable time with the baby. his parents have visited with her several times. so, he s establishing a relationship with her. all right. sand sobieraj westfall, some great reporting in people magazine it hits newsstands tomorrow. thank you. thank you. and coming up, switching gears here, diy style. simple ways to update your spring wardrobe that costs just a few bucks. but next, if you think your house is clean, you might want to think again. we re going to show you the germiest places, if you can handle it. apples to apples, against other top companies, to help you get the best price. how do you do that? turns out, you re more likely to get sick by germs in your own home than anywhere else. health magazine s medical editor and today contributor dr. roshini raj is here with the eight germiest hideouts. dr. raj, hopefully, everybody s finished their cheerios before you get this one done. exactly. so, unlike being at say banks or public transportation or schools, your home is germier than those places? well, think aboutit, all those places where you re going, you re bringing those germs back into your home and pretty much sitting in them. so, yeah, your house is a very gey place. first place, kitchen sink, countertop and sponges. kitchens are probably the worst, because this is where you re cooking. you re exposing yourself to raw food. raw meat, especially, has bacteria, raw vegetables as well. so, you have to be sure to clean the countertops well with a bleach and water solution is a great way to do it. your kitchen sink is agreat reservoir for germs. they love it in there. make sure you rinse out the sink and use a bleach solution every week to really clean out the drain. sponges. sponges are the worst because they re sitting there, they re wet and germs love wet, damp places. so, squeeze it out when you re done and rinse it out with soap and water. and a great thing to do at the end of the day is just throw it in the dishwasher, because that will disinfect, sterilize your sponge. cutting boards also a disaster. first of all, be careful to separate meats and vegetables. use two different cutting boards. but again, clean it carefully with a bleach-water solution is great. and if you have those cuts in your cutting board from the knife, it s me to throw it out. and you say use glass or plastic as opposed to wood. perfect. they re non-porous, so bacteria won t get in. wet laundry. wet laundry. when you do a wash, don t keep it in the washing machine for a long time, because wet laundry, especially underwear, is a breeding ground for bacteria. you mean clean wet underwear. exactly. hopefully, it s clean. your toothbrush is another breeding ground. right. so, it s normal for us to have bacteria in our mouth, but if you keep it in a brush, it s going to overgrow. so, after you brush your teeth, rinse your toothbrush in hot water. keep it upright in the holder, not downward so it s in stagnant water and don t put it on a countertop in the bathroom because there could be germs there. they say to change your brush every month anyway. and if you re sick, more often. your bathtub and shower area. right. so, as you re cleaning the germs off of your body, they re disposing on your bathtub or shower. you need to clean your shower once a week thoroughly. but even after every shower, if you could pat it down so it s not moist and welt, that s going to go a long way. also, in the bathroom, you say when you flush, you should close the lid because yeah. it s kind of nasty, but you re actually spraying particles of fecal matter every timeou flush if that lid is open. so you want to keep it closed. the bathroom mats that are on the floor, again, if they re damp, they re going to, you know, promote germs. so you want to keep them dry. our tech gadgets, like our cell phone, blackberry, iphone. yeah. so, we re touching these all the time. you show your baby pictures to your friend, they re touching your iphone. you might share a keyboard. a lot of germs there. use an antibacterial wipe. it won t get it too wet and ruin it. it s a good way to keep it clean. your shoes. right. we re tracking we live in new york, and you see what s nas on our sidewalks. sure. you don t want that in your house. number one, it s great idea just to leave your shoes outside the door. and also, get a very abrasive door mat, not one of these soft, nice-looking ones, but a rough one that will scrape up all the nasty stuff. maybe we should just wear disposable slippers. there you go. slow them away. then dusty spots. right. dust actually doesn t have a lot of bacteria. it really consists of human skin cells, your dead skin cells that shed off your body. mm-mmm! but there are things like dust mites that love to eat those, and you don t want tho in your mouth. whenever you see dust, a clean wipe, moist, will get rid of it. and dust can trigger allergies or asthma, so a high-efficiency vacuum cleaner can get rid of that. dr. raj, a lot to think about, and just before we get ready for lunch. there you go. thanks so much. still to come, millions of americans suffer from it. it can go undiagnosed for years. we re talking about thyroid problems. we re going to tell you how to recognize the symptoms. shine on sunny taste. sunny spirit. sunny d. brings out the best in kids. shine on sunny d find martina s shine cd in stores now. get flawless skin even in harsh, unflattering light. new revlon photoready makeup. our exclusive formula bends and reflects light to help diffuse every flaw for a poreless, airbrushed look. revlon photoready makeup. find your perfect light. reporter: he worries doctors aren t spending the time to do other tests which could catch what the tsh misses. endocrinologists agree it can be missed, but changing the gold standard for screening is a controversial idea. we in the endocrinology field feel that we have very sensitive tests in order to be order to diagnose thyroid problems. reporter: even though yola s tsh showed nothing wrong, the doctor says the other tests showed there was a problem and decided to treat her with hormone replacement therapy, and she says it worked. did you feel better right off? nothing wrong with that. reporter: yola says it was her awareness of thyroid disease that got her on the path to recovery. sometimes the smallest parts of the body are where the biggest challenges lie. this is really go. reporter: for today, lee cowan, nbc news, los angeles. endocrinologists we spoke to say the doctor s thyroid treatments are controversial, but everne agreed on one thing, if you suspect you re having thyroid problems, talk to your general practitioner about doing an extra round of blood tests on your hormone levels, and if the doctor is dismissive or ignores your request, ask for a referral to a specialist. coming up next, updating your spring style without spending a lot. did you know go-gurt is specially made to freeze and thaw lunch time? no. this is a can t get my hands off of this. that doesn t sound so good on morning television, natalie. this is by designer cho chen, and these designers inspired this segment. it s so nice, this texture. if you can see it up close, it s got a lot of depth and dimension. it s like slinkies on your sleeves, which we love. which, it makes it fun. yeah. and that s kind of like i said, inspired this segment. you re seeing the textures, t-shirts dressed up with lace and chains. and we were on the golden globes red carpet and ruffles and architectural design is sweeping in. this is something you don t have to spend a lot of money. you say you can do it yourself. let s start with adding texture. you say to a basic t-shirt like these. you can take a basic t-shirt. don t toss a stained or ripped t-shirt. this is a great way to camouflage it i just took sheer strips. these were scraps, actually, laying around the house. you can twist and tuck in any way. imperfect is perfect. and anyone who can thread a needle you can do this? if you want to use a safety pin, you can do this. but you basically base stitch on the entcenter and get this resu this is like a j. crew t-shirt i saw yesterday. inspiredy j. crew. this is inspire by designers i love. just use some ribbon and twist and tuck and twist and tuck with tool and gross grain and satin, and something that s one of a kind. and as you said, you don t have to be a great seamstress. you don t. just stitch it on its own. and basically the cost of a t-shirt and maybe a needle and thread. up here, the next diy style is to cut it out, and you can really take what is it, a plain little black dress i found this at zahra for $19.99. you may even have one hanging in your closet that you can update instantly. a great basic. why not jazz it up? just cut it out. masking tape you can place a pattern that you re kind of interested in cutting out. and honestly, at any local dry cleaner, it should cost you approximately $15 to $20 to ask them just to remove the areas that you kind of are playing around with, so you can get an idea. and we see on barbara here, the end results of what i played around with. wow. and it was something that they did in a day. really easy. i also, you know that looks like a designer style right there, yeah. and rula, ya-ya, thank you very much. she helped us out on that, but this is not a difficult job. i love it on barbara, too. she can definitely wear that. looks great on her. i love it, it s striking and sexy about being overexposed. so it s such a great idea. and next you say do a drape. here we see something that s basic, plain. this was actually a blouse. in case you don t have something in the closet. $10 at h&m. and on nancy, i want to show you how we removed one of the sleeves. so, anyone with a seam-ripper can just carefully remove a sleeve. okay. that alone is an instant update. you could stop there. but i decided to add this extra piecef chiffon. it s gorgeous. just match the color. and anyone, again, that is base stitch, which is such an easy stitch, just along the neckline like a bib. you can leave it like this and belt it to have more of a sort of date, an evening kind of fun look. right. you can drape it over the shoulder for like a trendy, asymmetrical look, which you see everywhere. or if you wrap it around like a neck scarf, you can put on a blazer and go to work. it gives you the versatility. daytime, nighttime, you name it, it s gorgeous. and it looks like an expensive blouse. beautiful. i love reinventing things i already have, playing around with fabric. nancy looks fabulous. thank you. now, next is to try bold shoulders. is this sort of back to the working girl 80s look? absolutely. it s on young girls like rihanna to ordinary women. you re seeing the suits updating their look. why does it give you the extra edge, the shoulders? it stretches your frame and gives you the appearance of being taller. it can also slim your hip because it s balancing everything out. for $8, you can just put something in temporary without having to tailored pieces can be expensive. you don t have to buy one or alter something you have. we have a picture of rashida. this is a great blazer. but it s rounded shoulders without the pads. right. now you see her live and it gives her that sharp you inserted these right in there, right in. and it takes seconds. and you don t need a lot of time to do all this. no. because a lot of us don t have that kind of time. whether you want to do a fun weekend project, you know, take it to the dry cleaner or your ya-ya, and have extra help or the natural, $8. this you can do on your own. so, before you toss that blouse or dress, think about other ways you can jazz them up. and all these ideas are explained at todayshow.com, and also, there are tons more diy style dozen on my website. slinky, slinky, made for a boy or a girl. i love this blouse! i can t keep my hands off. bobbie thomas, thanks very much. models, thank you guys. you look this morning on today s kitchen, we re going to take on duck confit. if you think it s out of your league, then you may want to watch this, because hot chef george mendez has a great recipe did you like the hot chef part? wonderful, thank you. a wonderful dish to impress youramily and friends. you re owner of a nice restaurant here in new york city. by the way, a nice mention in gq magazine as one of the top ten u.s. restaurants to open in the u.s. for 2009. sounds good. thank you very much. duck confit, first of all, what is duck confit? it basically means you re cooking duck in its own fat, confit, and preserving it and holdg it or cooking it in its own juices. uh huh, why? basically because it s so delicious. because it s so delicious and duck fat is loaded with favor and it s good for you as well. i m brand new at is. let s talk about how we start. we get, what are these duck legs. duck legs. they have a lot of fat in them, so you d be purchasing duck fat in the store. if it s not available, you can take the excess fat off the legs themselves, put it into a pot and render the fat itself. okay, you ve cut up some vegetables here. carrot, onion, celery and garlic. you re just browning this in what, a little olive oil? actually, a little bit of duck fat. duck fat. you can barely need anything in the pan because while it s cooking, they re rendering in the fat. so, this is brown al loves this. this is fabulous, a traditional thing in france, right? yeah, it s classical french cuisine. so, what you ve done is sauteesome of the getables. yeah. so i d first get the pot medium-high heat, of course, brown the duck legs, like so. then you can go ahead. this is for you. thanks, okay. slide all those right in. garlic, celery, onions and carrots. that s perfect. yum. so, you want to get that started cooking over medium-high heat. add salt at the beginning so you excrete the moisture of the vegetables and they start to cook in fresh pepper. great technique. i m hiring, so really? you know, i m looking for a job. no, i m kidding. so, you get these sweating. that does smell very good. this all smells very nice. simply cooked onions, garlic and celery. now, we have this big pot of duck fat. duck fat. yes. that s what it looks like when it s rendered, right? uh huh. which, again, you can get that if you purchase. if you re a health nut, you can use olive oil or canola oil or an oil of your choice, but duck fat would remain more authentic to the ingredient. we re starting to run out of time, so i want to make sure we get to all this. duck fat s going to go right in with the vegetables, right? yep. then we re going to add this which we tie into a bundle. that s going to go in that. and then pour in the duck fat. we re going to pour in the duck fat. and that s 100% duck fat. 100%. and you re going to roast this? it s going to graze, or confit, to be more precise. it s cooked very slowly in a 350-degree often for six hours. six hours? we do it overnight. so it really falls off the bone. correct. so into the oven. and this is the result. now, it doesn t look fatty at all. it looks sort of - well, you ve got it rendered. a lot of natural juices of the duck came out already. so, you serve it like you would, you know, i guess a stew. there are so many applications. a stew. you can eat it on its own. you can make a sandwich, make the rice, like we do at aldea. as we come over here, you can see how easily t meat actually comes off. let s try that. oh, my gosh it just falls off the bone. you can go ahead and sprinkle it on top of the rice here. i ll take a little. so, you use the duck confit for all kinds of recipes. absolutely, right. and you say your kids like duck, is that right? they love duck, oh, yeah. so the chopped parsley do you do the confit? i usually do the duck breast. like so. and what do you do with the rest of the fat? is the confit just the cooked duck or the whole stew? now, i could keep it in the fridge. but you could render it again and pull your maeat out again. sausage we have olives, the duck it smells so good. you know what? you re making me want to have some of this. i think you should. thank you so much. 9:561 our tile right now, in the news for today, the national zoo is getting ready to say goodbye to one of its beloved pandas. tai shan leaves for china next thursday. today the zoo holds a news don fence to talk about the details of his departure. then on saturday, a farewell party will be held at the zoo from 11 ak. to 3:00 p.m. let s get a check on your weather forecast, here s our moolgsz. temperatures are now beginning to climb into the low 40s. probably hit the upper 40s when a cold front arrives. it might trig i trigger a sprinkle or maybe a few flurries. then safrd, we could get some light snow, right now it appears only a couple of inches or so right around the immediate metro area. the beginning of the first part of next week, mostly sunny and cold as well. we might get a little more rain or snow on tuesday. we ll head into town, take a live look, there s the entrance to and the exit from the third street tunnel. no late issues, headed into northeast washington. let s head over and see what we re doing along 270 southbound. lanes are open, there was a medical emergency reported, just south of clarksburg. we ll have more news weather and traffic in 25 minutes, now let s go back to the today show after this short break. nbc-universal television captions paid for by nbc-universal television hi, everybody. happy thursday to you. it is january 28th. trutv s chuck nice is here. how nice of you to be with us today. it is wonderful to be here. thank you for and let me say this public bely. let me thank you publicly for requesting me to be here, because kathie lee requested that i would be here and i was very grateful. well it was really just because rick wasn t available, you know. he s off doing something, and i said, well, what about chuck? i think that was the greater motivator, but they had changed to jobs before the election. they re going, there s no rush. really? what happened? people still need good health care. we need health care but it doesn t help to have health care if you don t have a job. exactly. that s really what it comes down to. funny moments, though. first of all, it s so hard for me to listen to the president when nancy pelosi is sitting behind him going i m sorry. no matter what happens. she can t sit still and all of a sudden, biden will go that is true. he s the this is good television. i m not sure it s a great speech yet but damn, they re funny. uh-huh. then sam alito took umbrage. don t you love it when people take umbrage? i do. when they were talking about the recent supreme court decision to allow corporations to donate as much as they want was not good, here is sam alito. we saw it. i didn t realize dick durbin was saying, that s okay. don t worry about it. it was a good decision. i don t think durbin thought so. no. you look at it and remember we have separation of powers, the supreme court is supposed to uphold and interpret the law for us in our own consequentitution written by some of the smart i wish we had guys in congress now like the guys that started our country. frank was there when they did it. and he said they were just so sharp, you know. real patriots. they didn t have mtv. that s why. they weren t playing video games. and they understood about sacrifice. they really understood about sacrifice. i m hoping that our congress will actually take what obama said because you are right, the supreme court does not make policy. they uphold the law. when you look at what the constitution said, they said this iwhat it says. this is about free speech. it s a free speech issue. i m hoping congress will have a courage to step up and say we need to make a law so that this is not whathe constitution says. our system is not corrupted by money. i think everybody wants that. it s a new thing. it s called democracy. i went to see a great play yesterday. what is that? hoda and i, every wednesday, go to see something on broadway. went to see the great arthur miller play a view from the bridge. this was first performed in 1955. oh, does it stand up still and there s not an f word in it. no need for that because it s about real, real-life situations and so interesting and so of the best performances i ve seen on broadway in a play in the last in a long time. lee streiber and scar lsand sca johansson is great as his niece and then jessica, she s so real and heartbreaking. highly recommend it. are you a theater guy? most times nobody, but i will say sometimes i don t even want me init. you re happily married man, aren t you? i am happily married. how happily? very happily married. you know why? because she told me i happy. and you believe her. i know i m happy because she told me i m happy. i wake up, she says how do you feel? i say i m a little down. she says, no, you re not. okay, that s good. have you ever had any bumps in the road over the 12 years? absolutely. what happened? my wife and i parted ways briefly, nothing bad like that. in 12 years, you hit some speed bumps, but i will tell you that my wife let me know exactly who was in charge in our relationship and why our relationship will continue. she said to me, listen, you should take a look in the mirror because there is one of us who will not have a problem finding somebody else. and then i looked in the mirror and i was like, i don t think it s me! you said she s a very smart lady. she works hard, very good student, law degrees and things. she s smarter than you basically? she s smart and beautiful. you men are an inferior species. greatest mother i ve ever met in my life. how many children do you have? two children. are you a crazy daddy? no. my daughter is my heart. the other one you don t ike? number one is that not nighttime is not always the best time to have sex. people are exhausted. they re exhausted. you have had dinner, they re full, pasta, some wine. maybe a little wine. you already have somebody warming up your bed who you don t know who that is. in the cootie suit. mornings, actually, women hormonally are set up to orgasm easier in the morning. there s a little problem with that. why? most people have jobs and children. jobs and children. excuse me, i didn t realize i was showing my pitch my peach pit. it s a sex segment. it s okay. women over 50 don t have cleavage. they have a peach pit. that s another story. anyway, you know what i m saying? everybody is too busy and it s last on so many people s lists unless you re 22 and in a hot retionship. biggest mistake couples make is communication. i don t really think it s about time or place, but communication. they don t communicate on what they want, what they need and more specifically, when they want it and they need it. are you saying schedule the sex? do you kiss your wife? i think i have, even after 12 years. occasionally. occasionally. so, what would you say is the biggest mistake women make, and then i m going to ask you about men. the biggest mistake women make is expecting the man to initiate everything. i think that there s a lot of women that give the man the credit for wanting to pounce. i think women really need to build up that confidence and say i know what i want and i can get it. okay. guys love that. i like that. guys like that. jump and pounce. that s what i m sayg. using sex as a weapon is a bad idea. so, withholding it when you re angry or giving it as a reward, no. it s intimacy. have it as often as possible. this is our new leader. this is our new leader. it has to be real. it has to be real, absolutely. thank you both so much. have a great day, and lots of sex. if sex is not exactly at the top of your list and you just want to meet someone, we ve got a match-making pro hosting the largest speed-dating event ever. i don t know, but we re going to look at it. details right after this. when master match-maker steve wood talks, people listen. he has a reputation for shooting straight from the hip when it comes to dishing out relationship advice. take a look. welcome to tough love boot camp. do you know what i think? women get negative too quickly, whether they can t find their keys, running late for whatever reason, they ll show up for a date and complain for the first 15 minutes. that puts bad taste in a guy s mouth. i ve been married 12 years. i m used to complaining. you don t want it when you re dating. you have the rest of your life for that. what about guys? i learned a lot from them they always taught me to be responsible, save money. doesn t grow on tree. exactly. i never understood because it s paper. it does grow on tree. it is a tree. exactly, it s a tree. my dad used to tell me, honey, if you don t have enough money in your pocket to buy something, you can t afford it. would you say that s good advice? that s great advice. the reason why we re in this recession is a lot of people relied on credit cards to make ends meet. ifou re unemployed, you may have to. as you shop, use cash only. at some point, you ll run out of cash, and that will force you to stop shopping. but credit cards there s no boundary. don t you think the recession was also caused by people in positions of authority that did not do right by their people? that s why you re here. you call this the black-eyed susan. my idea about brunch is that you have so many other things to do than to make cocktails, so do things simple. make a specialty ingredient the night before or week before. you re going to show us how to make that other ingredient that s stuck down in the bottom that looks delicious and sweet. i love it. it looks like a lava lamp. it s kind of cool. does it save money by making it at home, eben. absolutely. blackberries, rose jam and other things. i never had rose jam. it s very cool. can i smell it, please? oh, i have to finish it, nice. you have to finish off the maceration. stop saying the word, for goodness sakes. little children are watching. children can t drink what we re drinking right now. oh, gosh. that is pretty. somehow we started off with the solution that you let sit overnight and then you added the wine and champagne. this is going to be deliciou delicious. sangria is great for brunch. you have sweet, savory, salty. with all that food it s so healthy. yes. uh-huh. thank you. this is refreshing on a hot summer day, yeah. not bad. got to tell you, it s very good. it is very, very good, eben. thank you. i always liked you. so good. we ll be back with more of today on nbc. the results of just a few seconds on our floor here. they do clean it often, but that shows you how well this thing work. this thing works. okay or not okay in okay magazine, the question this time was, is it okay to make out in public? i said public is a big place. i think a quiet corner and a romantic restaurant with candlelight and wine, why not? definitely would not try it in church. what did hoda say? hoda said don t like it when people make out in public but we have done it. hoda has done it? no, i m saying me and hoda have. just kidding. make sure you re not a sloppy kisser. folks out there love our chuck nice. they do and candy wrote in, she wants to know what to get her man for valentine s day, homemade coupons, his favorite music. what do men really want?
