appearance since splitting with her husband, jesse james. go back to making fun of me, i don t care. it s time to get back to normal. how she found grace and humor in the wake of personal heartache today, monday, june in the wake of personal heartache today, monday, june 7th, 2010. captions paid for by nbc-universal television and good morning. welcome to today on a monday morning. i m matt lauer. and i m ann curry in for meredith this morning. good morning. bp s embattled ceo, you were talking about this oil spill, tony hayward says they re capturing the oil. as you can see, it appears there s a lot of oil escaping from that containment cap. the cost from the spill has reached an astonishing $1.25 billion. oil-covered birds have washed ashore in texas. we ll get the latest on the disaster just ahead. we ll also talk to james cameron, the director of blockbusters like titanic, avatar and the abyss when he joins us for a live interview in a couple of minutes. new video of joran van der sloot, caught on tape entering and exiting his hotel on the morning of the murder he is accused of committing in peru and later being questioned and examined by police. we ll get the latest on this story that developed last week. and later how did al roker go from this to this? we ll take a very close and personal look at al s stunning weight loss over his past few years, his ups. we ll also talk about his downs and how he got into the shape he is today. all right, al, at ease. nbc s chief environmental affairs correspondent, anne thompson. anne, good morning to you. reporter: good morning, matt. admiral thad allen, who leads the response to this spill, says the crisis could go well into the fall, despite the fact that there is some success to report with that containment cap on the bottom of the gulf. the oil is still flowing into the gulf. bp says the containment cap is working. ceo tony hayward told the bbc the cap is drawing up more than 10,000 barrels of crude a day. what proportion of that is that coming out? at the moment it s difficult to say but we re expecting it to be the majority, the vast majority. reporter: some claim bp s claim of capturing the majority of the oil is overly optimistic. there is agreement on that this crisis will not end any time soon. this will be well into the fall. this is a siege across the entire gulf. this is holding everybody hostage not only economically but physically and it has to be attacked oall fronts. reporter: across the region from the new orleans oyster festival. this is a funeral march to mourn the death of the gumsz. reporter: to this pensacola florida bp station. frustration grows with the size of the slick. along pensacola s sugar white beaches, the ugly sight of tar balls spurs groups of local residents to do their own cleanup. i m picking up seashells and doing what i m suppose enot sup do. i m supposed to leave it to the experts. you see any experts up here? reporter: they re frustrated, too, saying they have to wait to clean the beaches. we know how to clean the beach. reporter: florida beaches are are still open. officials will continue testing the waters today here in louisiana, in new orleans, a congressional subcommittee will hold a hearing about the local impact of this spill later today. ann? anne thompson, thanks. the best way to see the scope of this disaster is from up above. kerry sanders joins us from grand isle this morning. reporter: good morning, ann. coast guard helicopter crew flew in from the great lakes region, which gives you an idea of how many people have been deployed from around the country to this area. we climbed on board their dolphin helicopter, flew the coast and out to what was the deepwater horizon rig. we re on coast guard helicopter 6529. this crew is out of traverse city, michigan. this is a rare look. you re looking at, of course, deep water horizon. you can see the natural gas that s burn iing off there, dow one mile and then two miles down in through the bedrock, that s where they punched that hole that got out of control. if you look out there off into rning area there, just to the t right, you can see the two platforms. those are the relief wells that are under the gun. it may not be until august that they re actually done but they re fighting to get down as quickly as they can. definitely a huge chapter of american history. reporter: this is an example of some of the damage taking place as the oil rolls in. you can clearly see the discoloration. and that discoloration is the oil. and what it does, it coats the vegetation and it causes it to choke. we ve seen those brown pelicans flying in formation. as they touch down on the water, they get coated in oil. right now they re safe. they re above the oil. if they get down let s see if they ll set down. no. they re still moving. it causes them to lose the natural repellant of the water and causes them to sink. there s oil everywhere here. i think it s a good example of huge, huge areas that do not have any protection. in fact, if you look right down here, you can see where the boom has broken off. see the yellow there? see how it s all bunched up and caught up? of course, the complaint has been this is not day one of this disaster. so, why is not everything in the world been deployed here? i think the one thing that was really surprising to me as we were over the deep water horizon site out there, that sheen as far as the eye could see. we were at about 500 feet. when we hovered with the door open, you could smell the oil. matt? kerr ary sanders in grand isle, louisiana, this morning. thank you very much for that report. oscar-winning director james cameron has decades of experience with deep ocean technology. he recently assembled an independent team of experts to come up with ideas to end the disaster in the gulf. always good to see you. thanks for joining us. morning. thanks for having me on the show. obviously there s so much frustration with what is going on in the gulf and with what isn t going on in the gulf. your frustration really was evident in comments you made last week. i want to play those for people and then i want to give you a chance to explain what you were talking about. take a listen. over the last few weeks i ve watched, as we all have, with growing sort of horror and heartache, watching what s happening in the gulf and thinking those morons don t know what they re doing. who were you referring to? what did you mean by that, james? i know you thought you were misunderstood a little bit. i was talking about the bp people, who were out at the scene, trying to control the leak. assic out-of-context kind of quote. i was telling a story in two parts. there s where i started, thinking they don t know what they re doing, watching week after week with the failures. i got into it with this team of expert, including some petro chemical engineers and people who know about deep well control and deep drilling and our team found out there s a very complex problem. there s a lot going on 18,000 feet below the surface of the water here, 13,000 feet down a bore hole. if they don t do things exactly right, they could actually make this worse. i know it s hard to imagine. as they like to say in this field, no situation is so bad that you can t make it worse. when you gather this group of people, and these are some of the best minds in the business, and you had a brainstorming session that i understand lasted more than ten hours, did you come up with concrete ideas in terms of things that can be done right now that can make this situation not worse, but better? yeah, absolutely. we looked at it in sort of three stages. what can we do right now to either slow down or stop the flow of oil and to capture what s escaping? that was our first two. the third section was what can this group do in terms of having ongoing value in studying the environmental impact to the underwater community and in possibly forming the basis of the framework for a national rapid response team, which we don t seem to have. we formed this as a kind of a adhoc workshop group. we formed it spontaneously four days after the crisis began. we think, you know, we need to have a permanent group that can come in on day one of a crisis. right. and assist. can you share an idea? i know you re going to release a report today. is there an idea there you would like to see implemented as early as today or tomorrow? sure. the thing that people have to understand, as we all look at this thing and say can t they just cap it? this is a big plumbing problem down there. all the days go by and we think it s still pouring out, still pouring out. you have these very high pressures way down at the bottom of the formation, 13,000 psi by our estimation. if you hard cap the well, you can create other problems, underground blow-out leaks can come up in other places that could be even more difficult to control. our group s recommendation is to go back to the top kill type of process where you get heavy oil drilling mud down the well, build up some hydrostatic pressure. the way you do this is throttle the well at the surface, create enough back pressure, which they didn t have before. i know you feel right now the only images we re seeing are coming from bp-controlled cameras. you would like to see some independent cameras down there. is the reason for that, do you think that bp is only showing us what they want to show us? well, i think right from the beginning there hasn t been a lot of transparency and a working group such as ourselves could have used an awful lot better information from that site. does the government want to rely on bp or another oil company for all of its intel coming out of the site or do they want their own independent capability to go in and see what s happening? we have that ability, submersibles, rovs, all kinds of vehicles that could get down there. why doesn t the federal government have that independent capability aside from the oil company? james cameron, always good to see you. thanks a lot. coming up tomorrow, we ll have an exclusive interview with president obama on the disaster in the gulf and the controversy over his administration s response to this crisis. that s president obama tomorrow morning right here on today. it s now 12 after the hour. once again, here is ann. matt, thanks. we turn now to some severe storms that killed at least seven people over the weekend in ohio, including the father of a high school valedictorian hours before her graduation. we ll talk to the man s brother in a moment. first, nbc s allison cartivol is in millbury, ohio, this morning. reporter: good morning, ann. at least seven people were killed by the severe weather that ripped through northwest ohio. here, a house used to stand and now there s only piles of rubble. there are 50 more homes that were decimated in similar fashion. today there are many lost lives and memories. what used to be lake high school is now little more than a massive pile of twisted metal and debris. it seems almost unreal. reporter: a tornado ripped the school apart late saturday, leaving cars strewn like toys, streetlights ripped from the earth, even a flipped school bus in its wake. these are substantial, brick buildings. in a matter of seconds, this destruction occurred. reporter: graduation for the high school had been planned for sunday. but it was postponed. and in a tragic twist, the father of the high school s valedictorian was killed by the tornado damage. this was one of many tornadoes to hit the region, with wind speeds that reached up to 165 miles an hour. severe weather ripped roofs off homes. it shook the house. reporter: now many piles of rubble. never seen nothing like this. reporter: while a lifetime worth of memories lies shredded here, one family uncovered a precious item. a bible. little bit messed up but still readable. reporter: there was a dust till dawn curfew last night. now that the sun is up, people will be returning to this neighborhood and others, trying to salvage their lives. ann? nbc s allison kartevold, thank you very much. 36-year-old ted krantz was killed when he went outside during the storm and was struck by degree. his brother, tim krantz, joins us this morning. good morning to you. good morning, ann. such a tough morning. i know you want to speak this morning so soon after this happened because you want to honor your brother. like a lot of families, you had gathered because you wanted to join in this celebration, your niece being awarded valedictorian at her high school graduate wag. what do you want to say about how your family is dealing with all of this this morning? as you can imagine, it s a very difficult situation, but we re a strong family and we re handling it well, i think. i understand that ted and his family had gone, when they heard these tornado sirens, had gone into the basement and that ted went out of the basement, left his family there, because the lights went out and he wanted to turn on the generator. why was that so important? well, if the generator wasn t on, the sump pump doesn t work and they were in the basement and they re in a low water plain field, and the basement might have filled up with water. so, he left to go to the garage to hook up the generator and make sure there was going to be no water in the basement. he also wanted to get one of the family dogs that was not down with them. and so when the tornado did hit a few minutes later, so much devastation happened. would you say that this is like your brother, to go out and try to protect his family under these kinds of circumstances? yes, i would. ted was a very loving father and family man, a very passionate businessman. this was very typical of ted to do that. yet here he was, on sunday was to be the graduation for his daughter as valedictorian. how proud was ted of his daughter, katie? as you can imagine, he was very proud of katie and all of his kids. and katie actually is going into pharmacology at the university of michigan, and he was just ecstatic about that. in fact, we have a photograph of your brother wearing a michigan regalia, a hat he was wearing, because he was so proud of his girl. what do you want to say about what her as entireaspirations aw he was already proud, knowing she had achieved so much? i think she can just take comfort from the years of parenting and fathering that he could give all of the kids and i think now she ll just try her best to pursue her career and do as good as she can. i m sure a lot of people, hearing this story this morning, are wishing her and your family well. tim kranz, thank you so much for speaking to us. thank you, ann. tough weekend for people out in ohio. some storm system. our thoughts are out to his family. let s get a check of the morning s other top stories now. natalie morales is sitting in for ann. good morning to you. good morning, matt and ann. good morning, everyone. israel said its forces prevented an attack on israeli targets. last week s israeli raid on ships carrying aid to gaza likely will be a big topic for vice president biden today in egypt. two terror suspects whose homeses were raided have a court hearing today. they say they wanted to join a jihadist group in somalia. union carbide, death by negligence, convicted for their roles in the world s worst industrial disaster that left some 15,000 people dead back in 1984. president and mrs. obama paid tribute last night to archbishop desmond tutu and others, who helped to rebuild south africa after apartheid. blackhawks beat the flyers 7-4. game six, wednesday night right here on nbc. and the nba finals are all even this morning at one win a piece after the celtics beat the lakers 103-94. become over to matt, ann and al. thanks, natalie. thanks very much. we had kind of a hot weekend good monday morning. i m chuck bell. the sun is shining and a beautiful day here. 65 is our downtown temperature. 62 in fairfax and loud on county. 65 in annapolis and 64 in maryland. forecast, you can t rule out a quick passing shower, but 30% or less for today. bright sunshine for tomorrow and finally rain showers we need arrive on wednesday. have a good week. and that s your latest weather. matt? al, thank you so much. there s new video of joran van der sloot being questioned by police in peru, where he is being held in connection with a murder of a 21-year-old woman. michelle kosinski is in lima with the latest on this. good morning to you. reporter: good morning, matt. joran van der sloot is expected to be formally charged today. police continue to question him. video shows him with the victim, hours before they say he killed her. with that smile, joran van der sloot grabs his hotel room key. on this night, behind him walks a young woman, her head bowed. they might have been any young couple. police call him a murderer. and her, a soon-to-be victim. it was around 5:00 am, four hours later, you see van der sloot leave, clothes changed, with a backpack, alone. local reports say he told the front desk, don t disturb my girl, left the tv on so loud, housekeepers would not enter that room for two days. when they did, they found 21-year-old business student stephany flores, daughter of a one-time peruvian presidential candidate face down, badly beaten, neck broken. he was headed to chile, caught at the coast. airing exclusive images of joran van der sloot getting his first medical examination by police. later he struggles to ask about his rights in spanish, apparently worried about signing a document. also trying to explain that some missing belongings in his backpack are back in chile. back in peru, police paraded him three times before national press. he would say nothing. looking bewildered in a bullet-proof vest, eyes misty. police here have called him a serial killer with a face of stone. he insists he is innocent. the pain over stephany s murder has been widespread. new surveillance video shows her parking at this casino, walking inside. that s where police say she met joran van der sloot, both avid poker players. she reportedly won a lot of money that night. after two hours, cameras show them leaving together. it was five years to the day before these images were captured that another girl, natalee holloway, in aruba, got in a car with joran van der sloot, a virtual stranger, and disappeared without a trace. they, too, had met at a casino, also capittured on surveillance cameras. van der sloot was 17 then, suspected of harming natalee, even jailed, but never charged with a crime. now suspected of another murder of another bright young woman in another vibrant capital. this time, police say they are sure joran van der sloot is their man. police won t say what potential motive they might be thinking of or what, if anything, van der sloot is telling them. matt? what does he weigh this morning? it wasn t always easy but a remarkable personal journey. should inspire a lot of people. the desperate search for a 7-year-old boy in portland, oregon, who vanished inside his school on friday. janet shamlian is there with the latest. good morning. reporter: ann, good morning. the little boy is a second grader. his name is kyron horman. what s so unusual and baffling about this, he was seen already inside the school, just steps from his classroom and then he was simply gone. proud and happy. this is the last photo of kyron horman, taken by his stepmother moments before he disappeared friday, wearing a t-shirt. instead of taking the bus, terry drove him to school so she could see his project on the red-eyed tree frog. he was very proud of it, his mom was very proud of it, terry. reporter: the school was opened to visitors for the fair. terry told police she lost saw kyron in the hallway, headed towards his classroom at 8:45 am. kyron s teacher never saw him when classes started and marked him absent. no call was made to his home, as is procedure in some schools and it wasn t until he wasn t on the afternoon bus that terry realized he was missing. an automated call was made to families later in the day. skyline second grader kyron harman did not arrive home from school today. reporter: his stepmother and father raised him from infancy. his birth mother came to portland after he was reported missing. in this type of situation, i think everyone is of an interest to us, especially when a child is involved. reporter: on sunday, an fbi brought every parent and student to the school, 300 interviews. it s terrible. i have two young kids, 6 and 8 and one of them is a kindergartner here. my heart absolutely goes out to them. i hope and pray there s a safe ending to this. reporter: a search of the school, grounds and two-mile route between skyline elementary and kyron s home has turned up nothing, parents and staff upset that a second grader would disappear from school. the report of a student disappearing from one of our schools is unprecedented and deeply troubling. another student saw kyron at the school after his stepmother says she left and they re taking pictures of the science fair. we ve managed to collect photos and videos from those that were there. some are time stamped. reporter: a desperate time for his family and his young friends. i m very worried and i hope he s okay. reporter: the fbi has brought in a criminal profiler to help with this case. meanwhile here at the school, they are going to have counselor s on hand today. school officials say they ll try to have as normal a day as possible, as difficult as that sounds. ann, back to you. janet shamlian, thank you. clint van zandt is a former fbi profiler. good morning to you. good morning, ann. have you ever heard of a case like this, where a child goes missing inside a school? no. ann, you and i think the two safest places for children, number one, is inside our own home and, number two once we get them inside the school, the next six to eight hours, we know they re safe and in good hands. that s why this is so frightening to all of us. at the same time, he disappeared while there was a school fair going on that was open to visitors from the outside. so, investigators have got to be looking at that. yeah. and that s the challenge. normally, you think that teachers, officials are watching who comes in and out. in some schools you have to be badged as a visitor. here, it appears it was wide open. if this had been advertised throughout the community, there could have been a lot of people coming in, parents, grandparents and even a potential predator. investigators have had an incredible number of interviews, 300 interviews over the weekend. what explains this and what are they asking? they re trying to find out, trying to establish a timeline. who would have seen this young boy after the time his mother says she last saw him. as janet reported, the mother said she released the child, he was heading towards his classroom. the teacher said he never appeared there. ann, we re talking about a 30-second period of time maybe. so, what happened? did he go into a restroom? did somebody take his hand and say come outside, i want to talk to you, and carry the boy away? could he have wandered out of an entrance to the school that wasn t being monitored? that s why this is so frustrating. after the mother releases her child, it doesn t appear that we have any idea where he went from that point. as you re intimating, the stepmother was the last person to see him. how closely will investigators look at the family? it s like any other case, a missing wife or child. you start you consider the case to be a bullseye. at that bullseye is the missing person and family member. you have to look at the mother, the biological father, the stepmother, anyone who knew the child. then you move away to school officials, teachers, workers inside the school. then you have to look at visitors. as you consider the possibility of foul play, authorities have searched everywhere they can. of course, unfortunately, we ve even found victims inside of a building that they were thought to have disappeared from. so, law enforcement really has its hands full right now. but they re giving all the resources they can. ann, 2,000 children are reported missing every day. even though this young man was just one more, it appears that he probably didn t walk away of his own volition at this point. clint van zandt, thank you for joining us on this tough, emotional story. . good monday morning. the sun is shining and will be a beautiful day today. temperatures in the low to mid 60s area wide. 65 in annapolis and 67 in st. mary s county, maryland and 64 in menassis and 65 in town. temperatures will climb into the mid-and high 70s and a quick chance of a passing shower and most of us will be dry. rain is likely for wednesday. make sure you keep track of your weather all day long. go to the weather channel on cable or weather.com online. al, thanks. is it a miracle drug? normal as in the way it was before the scandal broke out about her husband, jesse james, and his affairs with women like michelle bombshell mcgee. they fueled tabloid story force weeks and james sat down for a tearful interview with nbc s nightline to explain himself. let me take a break for a second. bullock has kept to the high road and stayed out of sight, surfacing only to release a statement to go ahead with plans to adopt a baby boy until now. everybody has cellulite, not just me. bullock kept the mood lighthearted, joking about the rumors that have been floating around about her. paparazzi need more flattering lenses. whoever established the high road and how high it was going to be should be fired. you just really look at the contrast between this appearance here compared to jesse s kind of very sad interview where he blamed a lot of other people, where he felt sorry for himself. you did not see that at all from sandra. this was a perfect coming out for her. bullock joked about her drama as well on saturday after winning the troops choice award on spike tv, voted on by members of the military. let s be honest here, just for a moment. we re all going to be honest, right? did i win this for being entertainer of the year or did i win this because of the spectacular ied explosion that became my personal life? of course, everyone has been speculating, how is she doing? how is she dealing with this, how is she handling all the public scrutiny? clearly, she s dealing with it just fine. i think that was the message. mtv honor ed her body of wor with their so-called generation award. all right. so the generation award is an award for old people who have extended their welcome and we should make nice and leave, so someone new can come in? because that s not going to happen. i m staying. certainly is staying. a message that her many fans and colleag colleagues have been waiting to hear in the classy way bullock has handled all of this is making people respect her even more, ann. that s right, natalie. thank you very much. obviously she s very funny always. but to find humor in a very tough situation is very brave. the kiss thing, what was the deal with that? i mean, seriously. is that required at these award shows now? you really should make yourself a presenter, because it could be a lot of fun. i don t know. remember there was a meryl streep kiss at one point? remember? i don t know. this is like this is a new thing. anyway we need to be nominated more. good to see her out and about. good for you. just ahead, al will share his personal our time is 7:56 and a beautiful picture of the white house. bright sunshine and lower humidity. i m joe krebs on this monday, the seventh of june. the woman accused of attacking a pregnant woman will be in court. 38-year-old christine devoe attacked a woman along sugar cane lane on friday. she was able to escape and run to a neighbor s house for help. the second set of speed cameras will be installed near bury high school and will trigger when the vehicle travels 12 miles an hour faster than the posted speed limit. there will not be a 30-day grace period. they will ticket $40 as soon as the cameras are set up and recording. we will [ male announcer ] progress. progress is saving tax payers millions of dollars, with the help of visa digital currency. which lets troy reiners, manager of nebraska s child support payment center, put money into pre-paid visa accounts for just a penny. instead of mailing out checks for 59 cents each. now that s progress. visa. currency of progress. temperature in the mid 60s and mid-to high 70s and ohm a small chance of a shower. dry tomorrow and rain likely for wednesday and wednesday night. along 270 southbound, authorities on the scene of an accident. southbound 270 after montrose road. a couple of minutes ago and two left lanes. it is jammed out of germantown. lanes are open, but heavy to the 14th street bridge. get your news, weather, and traffic before the suns up. we start at 4:30 every weekday. we hope you will join us then. have a wonderful day. we are back now, 8:00 on a monday morning. it s the 7th day of june, 2010. move over, italian stalion. we have our own rocky here, that is al roker. not looking pretty rocky. not at all. running and staying in shape. out on the plaza, i m matt lauer, along with ann curry and the aforementioned al roker. we re showing you that video because this morning we re going to take a very personal look at really the journey that you have been on over the past, what, eight years now? were there moments before that, where someone kind of took you, grabbed you by the lapels and said you ve got to do this? yeah but no matter how many times that happens for the most part, until you re ready to do it, it doesn t really matter. it could be your parents, your wife, your friends. it doesn t matter. but i think that one with my dad was just because i was going to lose one of the most important people in my life and i had to make a promise to him so that s why i did end up doing that. did you sometimes you work so hard, al, constantly every day thinking about this, working out as hard as you are now working, do you fear slipping back? yeah, i still do. i really do. and i think everybody who has been here does worry about it. no different than an alcoholic worries about taking that one drink and falling off the wagon. the difference with alcohol is you can live without drinking. you can t live without eating. so, you still have to always be vigilant. i know people do come up to you and ask advice on that surgery you had. wray. it s not for everyone. no. how do you handle that when they come up and say should i do this? i tell people it s a very individual choice, very dangerous people. one in every 200 people die from it. you have to make that decision. i can t make that decision for you. make sure you research the surgery you re going to use and at the end of the day you still have to work at losing weight. you were over 340, you told us. yes. at one point. how long ago was that? eight years ago. i like how you take the coat off. i m going to strip down. shoes. hold on just a second. you might want to give me your wallet. oh! very nice. all right, lauer! here we go. 204. 204, 136 pounds, my friend. thank you. not bad. ladies and gentlemen, that s so great. al roker, look at that. even more. give or take. i think i lost a pound in the hour i weighed in. if you would like more information about al s weight loss, send us an e-mail. al will answer your questions coming up in the next hour. we re back after this. of the confusion, go to metlife.com in less than 5 minutes, you ll get straight answers. like how much life insurance you really need and how much it costs. so, no matter where you end up buying, you ll make the best decision for your family. get guarantees for the if in life. from metlife. build your safety net with $500,000 of coverage for around $20 a month. have you tried honey bunches of oats yet? amy wilson confesses all in her new book. it s called when did i get like this:the screamer, the worrier, the chicken nugget buyer and other mothers i swore i would never be. she joins us with psychologist and mom dr. janet taylor, who runs her own private practice here in new york. good morning to both of you. good morning. amy you write day after day i do my best to achieve something that at its best is impossible. this is motherhood. that s uplifting. that makes us all feel so much better. i think the standards for mothers have gotten so preposterously high these days and most of us choose to take those things on and at the end of the day we sit there in bed and come up with a list of all the things we did wrong that day, small or large, usually very small and we feel bad about ourselves. you feel bad about buying chicken nuggets? yeah. you feel bad about that. you feel bad that your kids were two minutes late for school or you forgot to bring the thing for show and tell. that was smoothed over in three minutes in my child s kindergarten class but i felt bad about that for a week. motherhood is not a new invention. this has gone on since the species yet we re still trying to figure out how to feel okay about being mom. is this a new phenomenon? it is not new at all. we re harder on ourselves as mother than our own mothers were 20 years ago. we have women working, still taking care of the home. we have middle-aged women who think today s moms are not doing a good job. you have external pressure saying you have to be the yummy mommy. no, seriously. which you both are. thanks, but you have to look a certain way and then do this great job as a mom instead of focusing on the basic object, which is to raise a healthy individualized, successful adult. that he the goal. by the way, we should say dr. taylor has four children. she knows what she s talking about. you write, amy, the entire topic of motherhood is not considered worth one s time unless one is a mother. maybe not even then. motherhood is still seen as a waste of a smart woman s mind as if motherhood was beneath her talents rather than the job that most requires every ounce of strength and ingenuity that she possesses. this is a strong statement. yeah. i think we feel bad about these thi things yet we also have shame about that, that this is something that was supposed to be easy for us. this wasn t supposed to be this hard. mother was easy as opposed to making law review or the career we have. of course, it s not. it s very difficult and we feel bad about that and we don t necessarily talk about it because we feel like it s not something that people want to hear. did you write this book as therapy for yourself or is there some sort of effort here to reach other mothers and say it s okay? i did write this book to figure out when i got like this and then i do hope that this book is sort of a cautionary tale for other mothers. doesn t be this way. you don t have to. it s a waste of time. what s the takeaway? the takeaway, it is okay. motherhood is not only about survival, but happiness. a amy s book does, using humor i could identify with so many things that happened in the book to say, listen, we re all in this together. your kids don t need perfection, they just need a mother who loves them, a father who loves them and to support this creative, happy, healthy household. you can do it laughing at yourself or crying. it s all a long experience. it s not just one tiny episode. we don t have to be yummy mommies. you are. and we can look like heck and not always cook dinner every single night, right? your kids don t care. my son really liked those chicken nuggets. delicious. i personally love the chicken nuggets. thank you so much, amy. so much coming up after your local news. 8:26 is your time and 65 degrees. chuck will have the forecast after the news. this is monday june 7th, 2010. police are investigating a suspicious death on the 800 block of university boulevard around 1:00 a.m. there few details and the name of the 25-year-old victim has not been released. we will have the weather and navigating today s real estate market is complicated. you ve seen the signs. that s why having the right real estate agent is more important than ever. at remax.com, you can find experts in short sales or bank-owned properties or commercial real estate, agents who can help speed up the process, no matter how intricate. and that s good news, whether you re trying to sell or hoping to buy. because the only sign you really want to see is sold. nobody sells more real estate than re/max. visit remax.com today. ball: distance? exactly, yeah. it s a crazy character to play and so much fun for me. and i think especially with the costumes that they give you and the red contact lenses, there s very little that you have to do because you already look like such a creature, which is what i am. but a novice at this kind of thing might overdo it, try too hard. you want to overcompensate, do a great job. sure. you re so experienced already at the age of 16. oh. well, it s true. in so many wonderful roles. you ve sort of reached the point where you are a star, you can be the lead of a movie yet you ve chosen a very small role, relatively, in this film. so it must say something about how much you care about this series. yeah, absolutely. i mean, i was really honored to be ask ed to be in this whole phenomenon. it s such a crazy thing, twilight. there s so many fans, so many passionate fans. to be a little part of it is such an honor and i felt so lucky just to be a little part of it. do you think that this series defines the movie phenomenon of your generation as maybe star wars did for the one prior? yeah. i do think so. i think one of the reasons i wanted to be, looking back, was to be able to say i was part of it. i don t think there will be something like this for probably a long time, so i ve got to tell you, i m an old woman and i like watching these movies. you re doing a really good job. meantime you re an extremely young women, still in high school. the thing that s so interesting to read is that you have deliberately made sure that you have a normal high school experience, as abnormal as high school experiences can be. sure. you ve deliberately done that. in fact, as i understand it, you ve been nominated or won as a homecoming princess? homecoming princess, yes. you re a cheerleader as we see in that picture. yeah. how is that for you, that dichotomy in your life, being a star and being a normal girl? i think it was really important to have the high school experience. i started in ninth grade and next year i m going to be a senior. so, it s coming to an end. and you re thinking about college. i am, yeah. definitely. i think i want that experience as well. and i just thought that everyone always looks back on that time in their life and, you know, who was homecoming princess and the cheerleading and all the things that go along with high school and i wanted to have that. i m really lucky that i found a school that allows me to do both. it s a dichotomy. for example, you won a s.a.g. award, 8 years old. i was nominated, right. but that s very cool. and you were also nominated for this crazy thing last night, this best kiss award by mtv. robin kristin stole it from me. i know. what s going on? they were the reigning champions from last year. how can you compete with that? to be nominated for a kiss with kristen stewart. it was an honor to be nominated. it was great. to have that in your life and the dichotomy of pursuing this other life, are you sure after all you ve done so well, spectacularly, are you sure that acting is it for you? i definitely am. i know it s what i want to do forever. i feel most at home when i m on a set and when i m working. i love the relationships that you form with people and that you get to portray all different people from all walks of life. it s what i love and i m just lucky that i ve gotten to do it for this long and i hope to be able to continue forever. i have no doubt you will. thank you. we ve loved watching you. you really are just an amazing talent. i appreciate that. thank you so much. thank you for having me here. come back soon. definitely. the twilight saga eclipse opens june 30th. up next, anthony bourdain s not that long ago, many families were priced out of an overheated housing market. but the times have changed. get the facts at remax.com. it s a great place to see all the listings in thousands of cities and towns. with lots of houses to chose from and down-to-earth prices the dream of owning a home seems more attainable than ever. find out what an experienced re/max agent can do for you. nobody sells more real estate than re/max. visit remax.com today. ten years ago, anthony bourdain exposed what really goes on in america s kitchens with kitchen confidential. now he is out with a sequel medium raw: bloody valentine for those who cook. also on the travel channel, a show that takes him around the world as a professional eater. sounds like my kind of job. anthony, welcome back. good to be here, thanks. ten years ago you freaked people out with kitchen confidential and became a dark knight in the food and restaurant world. have you mel owed at all with this new book? i thought so when i was writing it. i thought i m a dad now. i thought it was a kindler, gentler, soft, fuzzy book but during the editing process i realized i guess i m still pretty angry. you still have a little bitterness in you. the world of food has changed so much in ten years. sure. it s been the birth and the explosion of celebrity chefs and trendy foods and more and more restaurants. has it all changed for the better? yes. there s never been a better time to be cooking in america. that means there s never been a better time to be eating in america. as annoying as the celebrity chef phenomena can be it can be pretty annoying. what annoys you about it? the silliness, goofy, overblown cartoony personalities. at its worst, even that has been good for the industry in that it s empowered chefs for the first time i m aware of in the past ten years. also, i care more about the freshness of food now and about variety and a lot of it is because of these people i watch on these crazy shows. you care about what the chef thinks now. people are more likely to trust the chef to suggest what they eat. that means people are eating more of what chefs like to eat themselves. that s a big change. you have a list of heroes and villains. mario battali, why did they make the heroes list? they re good for the world. they ve all changed the game and changed the way we eat today as well as being good guys with interesting things to say. you want to talk about some villains? sure. sandra lee, for example, known for her semi homemade recipes. yeah. what s wrong? you know, as a guy who spent 28 years cooking, it hurts me to see people dumb down food. i don t believe it s okay to use a prechopped onion when it takes a few seconds to chop it yourself. julia childs lifted us up to aspire to better. you mel owed a little on rachel ray? she sent me a fruit basket. you can be had, is that what you re telling me? yeah. you can be bought? it was low-hanging fruit, too. you travel a lot. it always seemed to me that for years and years europeans looked down on americans when it came to food. they just didn t think we knew what we were talking about. do you see that changing at all? i got back from pair sbis all the hot young chefs there are talking about david chang as being an inspiration, brooklyn being an inspiration. a lot of them were inspired by the no-nonsense casual we ve had here. that s changed a lot. one of the things you re worried about i would share your grief on this one, the loss of the great american hamburger. i don t know when we lost it exactly, but i was very disturbed by the time series about soaking meat in ammonia. i think that s wrong. and as much as i like some of the expensive boutique burgers there s something fundamentally unamerican about a $28 or $30 burger. one of the things that s changed, and we talk about these celebrity chefs, as we did a second ago, young people these days look to these chefs in some ways the way they did to sport stars and rock stars in the past. more people, young people who want to get in the kitchen. much smarter, better educated people with more choices are coming into the industry than came in when i started out. it was a loser profession. you ended up in the restaurant industry and our whole culture has changed. you would go to a movie and go to dinner and talk about movies. now you go to dinner, and you talk about the dinner you just had and the dinner you re about to have. the book is called medium raw. anthony bourdain, always nice to have you here. anthony bourdain, always nice to have you here. the w carmax is the smart choice because we offer a five-day money-back guarantee for every used car we sell. jason cameron, host of diy network s desperate landscape is at marty s home to reveal the results. good morning. good morning. how did this particular yard compare to all the ones you ve had to work on? this was a lot of desperation crammed into a very small yard, america s most desperate landscape for a reason. ann, it took six dumpsteres to clear this landscape. it was pretty bad. okay. i know you ve been working all weekend and i know that marney and kevin, you ve been helping as well. why don t we cue the drum roll? we have. and see what it looks like today? wow, that s amazing. how did you do that? gorgeous. and only two days. i just can t believe it. it doesn t look like our hours anymore. 48 hours ago, that s what it looked like. it was a lot of elbow grease, trust me. i think we re all really sore from what went on. that s for sure. maybe i should ask you, marney and kevin, this is the first time you ve gone through all of this. tell us about what the process was for you the last few days. it was an amazing process. from the moment the diy network came in and started to plan out how to do this, it s just amazing the resources and everyone that they bring through to get this done in the timeframe. so many people on site. it was crazy amazing. we like to call it controlled chaos, ann. it started over here with a brand new drive way and this side there was a big austrian pine we had to take down. this whole area transformed with the new garage door. really nice with the new driveway. over here with the brand new fence and gate. this really sets it off, this western red cedar, really amazing. wraps all the way around the landscape. come on in, guys. we come into their brand new entrance on their brand new paver walkway. they had really good practice on the plaza with pavers so they put it to good use right here. this looks amazing. no 90-degree angles, no straight lines, circular patterns and curves. it really does look amazing. where we re standing was a huge scott pine, 65-feet high that we took down. nobody got hurt, by the way. no. i also have to say if we were standing here 48 hours ago, we would be three feet higher than we are now. look over to the right. this beautiful, beautiful water feature, five tons of colorado stone that we brought in and, trust me, we felt every pound of it. it really is amazing. the kids can actually go, be interactive, play in the water feature. it not only looks great, but it s a place the kids can have fun. it s a highlight. they can have fun go ahead, marney. i said it s a highlight. it s so s. rene out here now. i walked by, not wanting to look at this yard. now that s all i want to do. i don t want to go into the house. sitting out here, watching the water feature and looking around. the neighbors actually are all across the street, ready to come in and have a barbecue or a party. right here, they have their want to be social now they have a nice patio. 1,500 pavers we put down. it gives them a nice space for the neighbors to come over and have a good time. all the color, texture, native plants to colorado, brand new front door. in addition, as if that wasn t enough, brand new roof went on as well. wow! marney and kevin whole new exterior. congratulations. jason cameron, everyone at diy network, great job, you guys. enjoy your new home. . 8:55 is the time and 67 degrees. ler humidity and great sunshine. chuck will have the forecast after the news. it is monday, june seventh, 2010. the woman accused of attacking a pregnant woman will be in court today. she attacked the victim her home on sugar cane lane on friday. she was able to escape and run to a neighbor s house for help. the second set of speed cameras will be installed this week. the cameras will trigger when a vehicle travels 12 miles faster than the posted speed limit of 25. there will be no grace period. violators will be ticketed $40 when the cameras are set up. stay with us. temperatures out of the 60s and into the 70s and we will end up in the high 70s today. dry tomorrow and rain for wednesday. jer he? we ve got advice on that coming up, issues like anemia and heart disease. first, let s get a check of the morning s top news stories with natalie who is in at the news desk for me. good morning. president obama s response to the massive spill off the coast of louisiana. bp has spent about $1.25 billion to contain the leak. it will likely stretch into the fall. deadly storms in the midwest, search people were killed over the weekend in ohio, police chief of one town says his community is like a war zone. there were 52 reports of tornadoes in the midwest on saturday and sunday. today israel s navy killed four palestinians in diver suits off the coast of gaza. israel says its forces prevented an attack on israeli targets. last week s israeli raid on ships carrying aid to gaza is a big topic for advivice presiden biden today in egypt. two men planned to travel overseas for terror training so they could kill americans, fbi agents raided the men s home after the two were arrested at kennedy airport saturday night, bound for somalia. one more note about the oil spill cleanup, birds coated with oil were cleaned and released back into the wild sunday on florida s east coast. at least a happy ending for some of the victims of the oil good monday morning. i m chuck bell. almost up to 70 degrees in downtown washington. officially 69 at national airport. 65 in winchester, martinsburg and haegerstown. 70 in menassis and 68 in alexandria. partly sunny and can t rule out a quick passing shower. otherwise quite comfortable and mid-to high 70s. rain likely for wednesday. and that s your latest weather. al, thanks. don t go anywhere. we want to talk about why we re so impressed with you. for a lot of reasons, but including your total transformation. al s life long struggle with weight loss is not only an inspiration, but serves as an important reminder how important getting healthy could be. we ll take your questions from e-mails but first matt takes a look back at his journey. twice a week, al heads to north central park and jogs four miles. it may not be a marathon but is an incredible accomplishment, considering how far he has come. here s what s happening in your neck of the woods. al weighed 320 pounds eight years ago. had trouble walking, clothes didn t fight fit that well. i think i was in a size 60 suit. morbidly obese. three bucks an hour and all the chocolate i can drink. a wake-up call from his dad, al roker sr., forced him to make a change. it was a few weeks before my dad died and, you know, i was going to see him at sloan keterring hospital every morning before the show. one morning he says to me, look, you ve got to promise me that you re going to lose weight. we both know i m not going to be here to help you with my grandchildren so you ve got to promise me. that evening, his father lost his ability to speak. three weeks later, he was gone. that was a real moment. in 2002, al s wife, deborah, brought up the idea of gastric bypass surgery. after careful consideration, he decided to go under the knife. okey dokey. lost like 140 pounds and that was great and so and i felt like, okay, i m never going back. hey, beautiful. his initial weight loss was documented both on today and dateline, but that wasn t the end. people sometimes look at this as a magic bullet. it s going to change everything. no. it s going to help you lose weight. that s it. over the next several years, 40 pounds crept back on. view this as i do, as you re a recovering alcoholic, that no matter how much success you ve had or are having, that you know, you re only one quarter pounder away from falling off the wagon. of course, it isn t just about the scale. no matter how much weight you lose, there s still that person, that fat guy lurking. intellectually, i know i ve lost weight. i mean, my suits are smaller. i know all that stuff. but, you know, when i look in the mirror, i don t see as much of a change as i think other people see. even with those daily struggles, al believes his dad would approve. i think he would be very proud, because he was an athletic guy. i think he would be very pleased. he would be happy. but he also would think i m cocky. don t get cocky, okay? all right. we weighed you in an hour ago. you weighed 204 pounds. it was actually more than 320, you say it was more like 340. i got up to 340. just before i did it, we were at the winter olympics in salt lake. i was eating everything that wasn t nailed down. that s the thing. a lot of times it s really the admission. a lot of people who deal with, whether it s weight loss or some other addiction, food addiction, it s really the admission or it s reaching that point where you realize, recognize you have a problem, right? that s a certain amount of shame about it. you feel people look at this as it s not an addiction. you just don t have control. you don t have self control. yeah, you do feel a certain amount of shame, that you let yourself get this big. meantime you ve lost 136 pounds. we ve got atscribe jay asking what were your biggest waistline saboteurs? what did you replace them or cut them all together? i went on a detox cleanse, melissa baumann lee from chicago put me on this thing. i do it from time to time where i eliminate all sugar, dairy, gluten, caffeine and alcohol. after i come off that, i eat pretty clean. i try to stay away from gluten. what s clean? stay away from gluten, haven t eaten much red meat since july of last year. i work out. i do a slow workout, high weight, slow repetitions. high weight, slow repetitions. so it hurts a lot to build that muscle? yeah. and i m running. and you re running a lot. do you have a fitness goal with the running? look, i ve talked i m training to see if i could do the new york city marathon. i don t know if i ll make it. i m training for it. you can do it, al. i know you can. elaine gerw tichlt. z says what was the question you asked yourself that finally motivated you to stick with a weight loss plan? i can t remember who the model was. one of these super models, but they said nothing tastes as good as this looks. and i like the way i feel more importantly than looks, i like the way i feel now. so if i m going to put it in my mouth, it better be just about the most spectacular thing of whatever it is i m about to eat. is it worth it is the question? yeah. you know, it depends. the other thing is portion control. in the old days, i would i could sit down and polish off two quarter pounders. i don t do that now. i mean, i don t really eat burgers, but it s much smaller portion. i might have a bite of this, a bite of that and that s it. that really gets to the psychological thing. i mean, a lot of times you keep eating two or three quarter pounders, it s feeding something and it s not really your hunger. right. if anybody is considering a gastric bypass, one thing that any reputable surgeon will make sure you do is have psychological counseling. right. an overweight person, a lot of people think you ll have this and all your problems are solved. it s an instant fix. right. but it s not. you re thinner but you still have the same problems. the next question was regarding the gastric bypass. i m three years out from mine, wondering what is the toughest h ruchl hurdle you still have? it s to eat within your means. i was slowly doing it. i gained 40 pounds back from my lowest weight. and so, you know, that is one of the things you have to remember, is that you can sabotage, you can defeat the bypass just like you can defeat a lap band, just like you can defeat any weight watchers or any diet you re on. whether you re following a biggest loser kind of regimen or anything. you just have to remember it s not you have to be constantly vigil. absolutely. a question from carol belair from little compton, rhode island and asks have you thrown away your fat clothes? i ve given them away, donated them to dress for success so that i i tell you, it was an expensive process. you have nice clothes, buddy. you ve gone through several suit sizes in the transformation. i have. i m down to almost a size 40 suit. yay! from a 60. from a 60. that s something. i ve gotten rid of them. if i do gain this back, which i m planning not to, it would be a very expensive proposition. so i plan not to. and, meanwhile, this has been a lifestyle change not just for you but your family as well. yeah. you really bring this home. i do. i do most of the cooking in the house and my son, nicky, is gluten free for a variety of reasons and deborah, my wife, is one of those health freaks. she s not a freak. she s a spectacular, healthy girl. she s very healthy. we were like a coed laurel and hardy. you have to have that support of the team, though, right, at home? exactly. if you don t it s fun. we go out running together. and it s it makes it a lot easier. our kids see us by example. that s exactly right. little bit easier. what you re talking about is from where you were, enjoying burgers, doing all of that, and to where you are now. when you talk about, you know, running with your wife, feeling better, being able to be in connection with your son in terms of how you re eating, when you sort of compare those two, it s a no brainer, which way people should go. look, everybody comes to this on their own. so, you can nag, you can cajole, brow beat anybody in your life you care about that may have a weight problem. it doesn t matter. in fact, it may even make it worse. so, they will come to here is the thing is there anything people can do? no. here is the secret. we know we re fat. we don t need you to tell us. we know that. when we get to it, when we re ready to change, we re going to change. so, stop bothering us. there s nothing we can do? no. nothing? just support, though. support. that we love you. support and love and encouraging. yes, absolutely. but not nagging. you ve inspired so many people, by the way. we re proud of you, al. we hope this helps and the message gets out there. i have to keep my hans off you now. thank you so much for sharing with us. we ll tell you about another story, a woman who claims she was fired for being too sexy. should be a flesh color, pinky color. do you still see the landmarks, half moon at the base or are things changing? is it also widening at the tip of it? let s look at what some of the problems could be. for example, there s something you call clubbing, which i m not sure what it is, first of all. when the very tip of the finger expands and gets wider and relative to the rest of the finger. so, you actually are reminiscent of a club, due to the widening of the fingers so the body can try to get more oxygen to the tips. what illness is associated with that? this is pulmonary problem with his getting oxygen and also congestive heart failure, other problems, getting blood to the tip of the fingers. also something called pitting. yes. what is that? that is associated with most auto immune problems. 50% of people with psoriasis has that, along with those linear lines. the nail is not growing at the regular pace and there s some defects. that means you have a psoriasis problems? it does. it could be other auto immune problems. something you should see your doctor about? you should get it evaluated. there s a possibility something more serious is going on. you also were talking about white nails, when there s a slightly white hue to your nails. these are an extreme example. there could be some less than that. what does that mean? a pale nail could mean anemia. white nails, 80% of people with liver disease have that, hyperthyroidism. there are other things that can cause it. it should be investigated. you have a little hand mannequin here to give us a couple of examples. something, for example, when you have a yellow, green color to your nail, that could indicate what? that s on our index finger here. sometimes a normal variation. when it starts being green, thick and crumbly, it could be a fungal infection, which is very common. when there s a stripe in the nail, like this one here, what does that indicate? could be a normal variation if you re older. if it s something new and widening, greater than three millimet millimeters, it could be a skin cancer, melanoma. that would be under the nail, the nail itself? yes. this little white stripe, reddish hue means what? the nails you think would be pink and then white at the tip, it s actually the opposite and could be associated with renal failure. and red and brown linear lines, like in this nail here? those are splinter hemorrhages, sometimes associated with endocarditis, associated with a fever and you have these popping up in the tip of your nails, you should be evaluated for endocarditis. if you can t grow your nails long and they re brittle, they break, should we worry about that? sometimes that comes with age. you may need to add extra moisture to your nails and it may have to do with your diet. you could supplement. what would you supplement it with? vitamin e is also wonderful and iron is another great thing to make sure that it s not the result of anemia. bottom line, if we see something unusual about our nails when we go into should we make a special appointment to see our doctor? absolutely. it could be an indication that something serious is go iing on inside. as we all know early detection is very helpful. it makes all the difference. dr. susan etches, thank you very much. eat almonds, apparently? this year is a year when people have really been having to make harder choices about which travel is essential versus nonessential. one thing that has remained on the table is family travel and, in particular, family reunions. 82 million americans are going to be taking a family reunion. so, we have four tips today to ensure success and to make sure that you have those reunions that really enter lasting memories. obviously the first thing is deciding where to go, where there is maximum appeal. it s hard to please everyone, as we know much how do you find a location that s going to at least please most people? you really want to find a place that has broad appeal. this is not the time to pursue your personal passion for vegan cooking or something like that. this is when you want to choose a place where there s going to be something for everyone. there s golf. there s spa. there s hiking. something like a cruise is a great idea, because everything is at your fingertips. they tend to be more all inclusive. all inclusive. cheaper. something like an all inclusive resort is another great idea. they re budget sensitive and you know somebody can go swimming and another person can learn how to go salsa dancing. grandma s happy and the toddlers are happy. when you re planning a family reunion, families come from different income levels. you have to think about budgets. it is crucial to be budget sensitive and to cater to the lowest bottom line. you want everyone to feel like they re included. one thing you can do is to really the most expensive part of any trip is always going to be the lodging. you want to think about a place where there s going to be a variety of lodging prices and one place like that is the florida theme parks. so, some place like universal studios or walt disney world, there s a range of hotel options around you. you can have a $100 a night or $300 a night where you can put multiple families. everyone is comfortable with what they re paying and it s all about the fun. big families come with big personali personalities as well. how do you ensure you re keeping those who are more difficult at ease and having a good time? this is the reality of getting everybody together. one thing you can do to ensure success is to not overschedule. choose one activity a day that everybody does together. just because you are all together on a family reunion doesn t mean you have to spend every waking minute together as a family. so, keep in mind, this is vacation. it should be fun. and so make that activity fun, something like chartering a boat to a private island and having a secluded picnic or get a guide, take a rain forest hike. spread it out, the responsibility, so that one family is choosing the activity one day, another is choosing is the other day. that s another thing. you said you also have to really d. vy up costs and duty as well but starting way in advance. two years out, we look at the timeline, you say you should already be planning. from nine month it is to two years, what should you be doing? figure out who is interested in coming. settle on a destination. have the heads of families determine that. four to nine months out? four to nine months out, find your hotel and flight reservations and figure out your final head count. and then four months out, you say, book your daily activities, ask for group rates. absolutely. make sure you re getting a discount. and under one month out, you say, of course, you have to finalize that head count there and adjust, confirm reservations. and pray for good weather. this is fun. you re all together. even if it rains, whatever, you ll have fun. a good time with your family. right. nikki willdorf, t this morning in today s kitchen, a simple summer meal. last thing you want is something that weighs you down when the weather is hot. sorry, didn t mean to go into your shot there. that s okay! artichoke and spinach pota, host of the food network s what would brian boitano make. good to see you. you, too. i think people are afraid of artichokes. they are. they used a canned artichoke. i just like fresh. summer means fresh and light to me. i m going to start off with roasting an artichoke. artichoke and spinach pasta, light and easy. i ll show you how to roast an artichoke. these are fresh artichokes, cleaned. just cut off an inch on the top. right. about half an inch on the bottom, spread these open. you re going to rub it with a little lemon juice so it doesn t turn brown. and then i m going to pop a clove of garlic in each one. interesting. drizzle it with olive oil. salt and then i m going to wrap it in foil and then i m going to roast it in the oven for 25 minutes to half an hour until it s fork tender. at what temperature? 425. you peel all the leaves back and you re left with this. why don t you clean that out with the spoon? scoop it out? yes and i ll show you what else is in here. onion and garlic is sauteing. you re supposed to be more gentle with it than that. i ve got some here. thank goodness. so, this is all that you use out of the whole thing? that s all you use. you cut it in half, slice it up. and then i m going to add some vegetable stock, white wine. right. i m going to add these really great heirloom, baby heirloom tomatoes. grape tomato, something like that. salt and pepper and then you re going to let this cook down, toss in little butter to finish it off. mix in artichoke hearts there. we ll put in a little basil, all right. this cooks down. we have pasta, hapasta. drain that. you can use a whole grain pasta if you want? yeah and you can leave the butter out. this is already healthy. if you want to leave the butter out, it s okay. it will be tasty. don t leave me out! don t forget me. we love this. yeah, natalie. this is going to cook down a little bit. then we re going to add it just pour it on in? yeah, just pour it on in. there s grated parmesan cheese there. add parmesan cheese. fresh spinach, handful of fresh spinach, toss it up. it s going to wilt and gives that fresh quality to it. really health. i really, really healthy. there it is. right here. come on back. of course we re out of time. we ll garnish that with parmesan cheese and per. 9:56 and 70 degrees. enjoy it while it laughs. chick will have the forecast after the news. in the news we are following breaking news out of fort washington. police are on the scene of a death vgz in the 1600 clock of clarion terrace. it is unknown how many people are involved. we will bring you more on the midday newscast at 11:00. chuck bell is in the studio and a nice day. no kidding. a break from the summer pattern and delightfully cooler and drier air moved in. 69 degrees at nashville airport. 72 in frederick. partly sunny and we are building cumulus clouds and they may bring in a passing shower. most of us won t ned to worry worry about the rain. refreshing weather and temperatures in the 50s to near 80. rain is likely lie wednesday and early thursday. jerry, your friend heat and humidity return for the weekend. i like them both. minimal delays and good news. travel lanes are open and slow around the capitol beltway. let s look around the 270. moving along nicely from frederick through german and gaithersburg. news 4 today starts at 4:30 a.m. jo host: could switching to geico really save you 15% or more on car insurance? it is fun day, monday june 7th. we want to wish you a good beginning of the week. thank you for spending part of it with us. don t we, hoda? certainly we do. and you re quite chipper and. so tell me why couldn t you sleep last night? you have the best intentions, you know you have a long day the next day. you plan everything to go to bed early and really do well, my son is home from college, as you all well know, and i m very happy about that. when i see his shoes in our entrance to our house, even though they re eight feet long, i like them there. but he often has his friends over, and all of them are football players or basketball players, volley ball players, they have boat feet, too, but that makes me happy, because they re there at our house, not somebody else s house, so i guess last night the basketball games are going on, the lakers and celtics. yeah, yeah. so i said, please keep it down. i ve got to get up early, and i won t get back until 11:00 tomorrow night. yeah, mom, it will be fine. i finally get to sleep. sometimes when you plan to get to sleep, think about it so much you can t get to sleep. i don t know why they guys can t carpool, but they all have their own cars, so it s a mosh pit. so it was loud? it was loud, but finally they settled in. i finally get to sleep. all of a sudden our fire alarm goes off, because they were making popcorn down in the movie theater, and sparks started to fly. that s when the sparks really started to fly. frank s running around naked. i m running around naked. it s not a pretty sight on a good day, us naked, but when there s a fire alarm. ouch. after that, i couldn t sleep all night long and the dogs and puppies, but hoda, i m here for you. i m so glad you are. never would i leave you actually i m leaving you tomorrow. jury duty calls. because i m a good, solid citizen. you know, what you can do, when you get called, you can call up and push the button that says call me later. what? no, i have to call tonight. no, no, when you call, they go, hey, is it convenient? and you go, no. it s never convenient. then you hit call me in three months. then they call you back. i did that once many times, and then they get you at the end. but you ve got to go in eventually. the bad news is this is federal. oh, you re in trouble. so this could be months bye-bye, everybody. no you re not. months. no. this weekend i saw for the second time, karen came to visit. we saw million dollar quartet. this is the one with johnny cash, jerry lee lewis, presley and carl perkins, about the same they all met at the recording studio in memphis. it was like i hadn t seen it before. the place was rocking. how different was it from the first time? they seemed to be in an incredible groove before they opened. to me it s the best music with talking in between. it s like a concert. nominated for best book, too. the tonys are coming up. this week we need our picks. okay? the french open is on. so i turn on the tv, and i m like it s roddick and federer. i m watching this match and screaming for federer, and i m watching, screaming, why are they playing on grass? i didn t care. it was a repeat on nbc of wimbledon from last year. it went to the last set, 7-7, 8-8, and i was yelling, and i m like, this is start to go seem familiar. i m exhausted from my expended energy. this is not the french, it s not clay. you were literally at wimbledon last year. i know, i know. that s not something you watch on television. that s why it seemed so familiar. i thought, gosh, this is just like last year. anyway, that was that. anyway, i want to wish my dear friend mickey kauffman farley, her son is i was a a memorial service for her son. you know, many of us you think you have problems. then when you re with a friend who just buried their child, you realize how blessed we are. we tend to have pity parties in life and tend to think it s all about us. she s just the most heroic woman. scherr son was diagnosed with a terrible aneurysm. they thought he would not live out the year. he died at the age of 40, doing what he loves best, building engines for race cars, and i just send love to her family. i was watching the sandra bullock thing happening, and i remember when you re in the middle of a firestorm, you think that that s all the world is talking about, that s all the world is focusing on, but we have two examples of what happened with her. sandra bullock stepped out, and that s fine, she does it the way she does it, with grace and humor. the mtv awards, she is was on last night. there s a moment when she kisses scarlett johansson, when everyone was thinking what s going on? so in context, it was sandra bullock and scarlett johansson s husbands were up for best kiss, but listen to what she said afterwards. okay. all right then. so the generation award is an award for old people who have extended their welcome and we should make nice and leave so someone new can come in, but that s not going to happen. i m staying. [ cheers and applause ] because no matter what you might have seen or heard or read lately, um, i love what i do, and i m not going anywhere. whoever established the high road and how high it was going to be should be fired. can we please go back to normal? because therapy is really expensive. go back to making fun of me. i don t care. she doesn t care. she says, go back to making fun of me. what s to make fun of? she s almost like the perfect woman. what i love is she gets out there and she is all about humor and strength. i mean, just when you look at the dichotomy, how her husband went on nightline and was very emotional, i m sure she s heartbroken too, but she says don t feel sorry for me. i m out here, i have this baby like you get a feeling of strength. but what she also did, which was very wise, while she was almost hemorrhaging from the pain, everything that she was going through, she stayed out of the limelight. her mother taught her that. you know, you suffer privately. then when you can put on your game face and brave face, you go out there. you see that. she has great inner strength, but the one thing she said later on another night, i think she ll be sorry she said it. can we see that one? do we have a tape of that? that s when she was being honored by the troops giving an award. i think it was the spike awards. we re all going to be honest for a moment. did i win this for being entertainer of the year? or did i win this because of the spectacular ied explosion that became my personal life? that s the thing she once she steps away from this and gets the whole situation in perspective, she s going to say to yourself, yeah, i went through a lot of garbage, but i didn t hardly go through what so many are going through. and i think that s one of those things you weren t thinking about. but we re being to cut her a whole bunch of slack. if anyone deserves it, it s her. we re going to talk about our favorite things. what do you have? people have been noticing, even though we talk about brilliant things on a daily basis, it s our hair and nails is all you seem to care about and our potbelliness my case. so people ask me why, after so many years of doing a french manicure did you switch? the truth is i m getting old, running out of time, and the french manicure took too long. this is zoya, and the color is amanda. it lasts really long. it goes with everything. it looks darker on television than it is. it looks kind of purple on our monitor. it s more neutral. zoya, amanda the color. have you heard of tocca candles? they smell like heaven. i m walking around with karen yesterday, and they are selling laundry detergent. with all the dishes you do. not for dishes, for your clothes. i m sorry. laundry. for your special clothes, a capful. this is an orangy one. this is called stella, but it s for your del cats. a couple capfuls, you watch your del cats. perfume should come out with a laundry detergent. they should call it hoda instead of stella. yes. yes. do we need to go to our darling? how was your weekend? it was great, and i brought a sports bra. this goes awesome. the sole cycle, and sports bras all run about the same price, about $35, but i ve been blessed, and it s tough to be athletic and have a bra that actually supports you. i was out running, and this bra, i literally have to watch it almost everybody night. you could have two. you should wash it every night. i feel like it s the only one out of mire selection of sports bras that i like to wear. here s an idea go ahead a couple more. do i have to do everything around here? we have dierks bentley here. he s adorable. we said bluegrass, we know what we re talking about. this is my body wash. what do you mean? this is it? why?! oh, don t do that to me! dove creamoil body wash. now with nutrium moisture. nutrium moisture. i m a believer. the nourishment in dove creamoil goes somehow deeper. i m happy about the change. change is good. dove creamoil body wash. i m happy about the change. change is good.
