others call it annoying. officials are threatening a ban today, monday, june 14th, 2010. captions paid for by nbc-universal television and good morning. welcome to today on a monday morning. i m matt lauer. and i m ann curry. meredith is off all week. the oil disaster is in its 56th day and president obama is making his fourth trip to the region this week. the two-day visit is expected to include stops in mississippi and alabama and florida and tomorrow night president obama will return to to the white house to deliver a national address, his first from the oval office. we ll get a preview of what he s expected to say coming up in just a couple of minutes. also this morning, matt, what the u.s. military and a team of geologists have found in afghanistan that could be potentially and dramatically changing the entire future of that impoverished war torn country. plus, a highly controversial case down in florida. a fourth grade teacher fired after admitting she conceived a child with her fiance just a few weeks before their wedding. the school says she was dismissed for, quote, a moral issue that was disregarded, end quote. having sex outside of marriage. this morning that teacher will be here for an exclusive live interview. but we begin on a monday morning with president obama heading back to the gulf coast region today. nbc s chief white house correspondent chuck todd is in gulfport, mississippi. chuck, good morning to you. reporter: good morning, matt. as you said early on, this is go ahead. i was going to say, there s been so much criticism of the white house over the last couple of weeks, and now you re starting to see a dramatic turn at least in tone from that white house. have they heard the critics? reporter: they absolutely have heard the critics, and as you put it in the open, this is the start of an attempt to essentially go on offense. one of the white house aides said to me last week, they realize they don t have a perceived, quote, command and control over this situation. so when you look at the schedule of events this week, if they can t change the perception or at least start making the turn that they have command and control after doing everything they re doing, because when you think about these stops, matt, mississippi, alabama and florida are just now starting to feel the effects of the spill. you re just starting to see oil come ashore in pensacola and alabama. actually here in mississippi they re not feeling the effects that much. but it s an attempt to get out in front early unlike the way the president handled the situation in louisiana. second, this oval office address, this is the first time that he s given a nationally televised address on this in prime time from the oval office. he s going to go through a few  things in there including talk about explain to the public how they re changing the government regulatory process in order to make oil drilling safe again. he s going to make a push for energy legislation, so try it to use this incident as a way to say, hey, america, we have to get off of this addiction to fossil fuels. he s going to hit bp kind of hard and talk about how they re going to try to fix this claims process. as you know, a lot of businesses, particularly here on the gulf coast, are wondering when are they going to get that second check? maybe they ve gotten a $5,000 check, but they haven t gotten that second check, and that s what they re hoping to get and another thing the president is going to do and of course he meets with those executives on wednesday. all about command and control, matt. chuck todd down in the gulf region for us this morning in it gulfport, mississippi. chuck, thank you very much. bp says its response to the disaster in the gulf has mao topped $1.6 billion. nbc s tom costello spent time touring the louisiana shore with the company s top executive there. tom, good morning to you. reporter: hi, matt. good morning. we were on a bp helicopter at bp s invitation. this was a trip really to look at bp s complete cleanup operations on the louisiana shore and it comes as the coast guard is pressing bp to do more to siphon off oil from that pipe 5,000 feet below. in a bp helicopter over louisiana s barrier islands, it took only a few minutes to find signs much of the oil pouring from the ocean floor. the sheen will naturally dissipate. there s not much you can do to clean it up. we re looking for heavy oil or tar balls in it because those are things we can collect. reporter: we were taken off on a tore down to grand isle, one of the barrier islands to get hit hard, and the oil keeps coming 20,000, 40,000, maybe 50,000 barrels a day. bp doesn t know how much. i think a lot of americans are struggling to understand how bp doesn t have a firm grasp on how much oil is coming out that have pipe since it s your pipe, your equipment, your pressurization, methodology. why don t you have a better feel for that? well, the problem we have is that the leak is at 5,000 feet of water depth and you can t put a meter on it down there. you can t do precise measurements down there. reporter: it was on grand isle the chopper landed to show us the company s all-out effort to clean the beach of any tar using heavy machinery to sift the sand. just lightly, maybe a quarter inch or less underneath that layer of contaminated sand. reporter: 100-degree heat helps dilute the water but on the beach it s much tougher to collect. this tar is definitely hotter and gooey and it runs, doesn t it? absolutely. you can see it right here just running down the side of the pile as we speak. reporter: so hot crews can only work for 20 minutes at a stretch. bp says it never anticipated a disaster of this scale. that, say critics, is exactly the point. bp s disaster plan seems to be a cut and paste, mentioning animals that don t even live in the gulf. the spill plan bp had that has been reported widely was talking about protecting walruses and sea otters and a main point of contact somebody who had died five years before the plan was created. did bp really take this seriously? well, i think you have to go in and look at that plan in detail. the document that refers to things like walruses and seals actually refers to species that can be heavily impacted by a spill and all species, not one is unique to the gulf. reporter: bp says it s spending $30 million a day on cleanup and claims. but about that cleanup we re still relying on booms, still relying on skimmers, still relying on shovels. 40 years after the spill in the gulf of mexico why don t you have giant vacuum sucking tubes, why don t you have the most high-tech 21st century response to this? tom, i think that probably part of the reason is there have been so few big spills. the events haven t driven the technology change that s out there. i think this event probably will. reporter: in other words, bp and its competitors haven t invested in the it technology for the last 20 or 40 years because there hasn t been a spill. as for right now, what are they doing? they re going to try to siphon off more and burn it at sea. meanwhile, matt, listen to this statist statistic. it takes four to six weeks for the oil to flow from the pipe to the beach. once they shut it down, maybe august, we have another month or more after that of the oil still coming ashore. back to you. tom kocostello in louisiana this morning. tom, thanks very much. it s now eight minutes after the hour. once again here is ann. the death toll from friday s flash flood that tore through a campground is rising. 19 bodies have been recovered. john yang is in langley, arkansas. john, good morning. reporter: good morning, ann. the search enters the fourth day today, this morning. it s actually spanning, talking about bringing in more search dogs. the list of the missing is shrinking. it s down to just a single name. from sun up to sun down, hundreds of searchers scoured a remote and rugged 50-mile stretch of the little missouri river looking for the missing. this has been a tragic incident and it was just one of those things that we hope we never see. reporter: they were among the estimated 300 people including families with small children in the ouachita mountain camp grounds. authorities put the estimated number of missing at more than 40. but as people who managed to get out checked in that number was drastically cut. still, the searchers press on. we re going to continue the search until we re satisfied that there is not anymore. reporter: searchers were on horseback and all-terrain vehicles, in kayaks and canoes. now they re focusing on debris as high as 30 feet, as long as 120 feet. six teams of dogs trained to detect human remains are helping out. family of the missing toured the area accompanied by-pass tore graig cowart and his wife andrea. we just let them have that time to kind of program themselves and the memory of what had happened so they can deal with this and have some closure. to be able to move on. it s just like you go up here with your family, you come home by yourself. reporter: among the dead, at least a half dozen children 7 years old or younger. they begin to look and one mother found a zip lock bag of pictures of the children she no longer had. reporter: the chryst family has been coming for years. angela saw her 6-year-old son nearly drown. what haunts her is what she heard. nothing compared to those little babies that were screaming and hollering, help me. we just couldn t reach them. reporter: the first funerals for the victims are scheduled for tuesday in texarkana, texas. they ll be for two schoolmates, two girls 7 years old, and one of the girl s grandmother. ann? what a tragedy. john yang, thank you so much. it is 7:11. once again, here s matt. to an extraordinary view of life on the front lines in afghanistan for u.s. service men and women. nbc s chief foreign correspondent richard engel s embedded with the 82nd airborne near kandahar. he was with them over the weekend when they fought off the taliban surprise attack. richard, good morning to you. reporter: good morning, matt. thousands of american reinforcements have been brought into the kandahar area as part of this new summer offensive. and as we saw over the weekend in some of the rural outskirts of kandahar city fighting has been very intense. for soldiers of charlie company 2508 of the 82nd airborne it s a somber march back to base. they re returning from a memorial service on saturday for one of their own killed this the taliban stronghold outside kandahar but the taliban are waiting. the soldiers rushed to the roof to return fire. the most intense assault ever on the outpost. they launched mortars almost straight up. 20 taliban fighters are just 100 yards away. under heavy attack. already one soldier has been severely injured. and the others? how many do we have? the guard tower on the roof, soldiers find more injured. stay low! reporter: they re treated under fire. the troops keep firing, now supported by helicopter gunships. after 30 intense minutes, the battle is finally over. battles like this one are picking up and taking a toll. on many patrols, sergeant lewis loftus is the point man. if there s an ied in the ground, he ll most likely see it first or step on it. i m thinking about, you know, getting where we re going the safest route possible. i really don t dwell on this could be my last patrol. reporter: loftus from akron, ohio, looks at photographs of the girl he wants to marry after he goes home in a few months. when i ask him about a fellow soldier killed last week, it s clear how deeply these troops feel about the growing casualties here. right now i m numb to it. to be honest, i don t feel much. i pray for afghanistan, i pray for its soul. i try not to think about it. because when you think about it, then i get like this and it s not yeah. so, yeah, you know, everyone deals with it in their own way. i try to hide it. i try not to think about it because i kind of stay 100% i have to keep a good example in front of the other soldiers. i m sorry. reporter: but when the base was attacked this weekend, emotions were put aside. loftus fired away on a main gun, very much in the fight. the soldiers wounded in that firefight, matt, all survived their injuries. richard, before i let you go, a story in the new york times over the weekend at that u.s. geologists and military officials have found enormous untapped resources in afghanistan, talking about minerals like iron, copper, cobalt, lithium, and gold. that s a huge story for the future of that country. has the story made it to the streets of afghanistan? reporter: no. that has not become popular knowledge in afghanistan. there has long been rumors this country is incredibly wealthy. it has always been famous for its gemstones, rubies and emeralds. now the idea there could be a trillion or more dollars in metals, precious metals, hidden in these mountains, that has not yet captivated the streets of afghanistan. when you talk about a trillion dollars, that sounds like a great thing in the hands of a democratic government. are there fears, though, that it could fall into the wrong hands? reporter: that is a major concern here especially right now. afghanistan is a contested country and the government doesn t control all of the area. that s why u.s. troops are pouring into areas like kandahar and now with this information that there is a trillion dollars or more at stake, it gives an incentive for the government to fight. it also gives motivation for the talib taliban. it makes this country much more valuable. richard engel in afghanistan is morning. richard, thank you very much. let s get a check of the rest of the morning s top stories. natalie morales is in for ann over it at the news desk. natalie, good morning to you. good morning to you, matt. good morning, everyone. officials in portland, oregon, say the case of missing 7-year-old kyron horman is now a criminal investigation. nbc s janet shamblian? reporter: investigators are tightlipped about what they think happened to kyron but they re dramatically scaling back the search indicating the hopes of finding him alive are fading. the disappearance of kyron horman is officially a criminal case with a $25,000 reward attached. the latest attempt to bring the 7-year-old home. with the search and rescue mission completed at this time, we are moving operations towards the criminal investigative end of the spectrum. reporter: with kyron s family standing behind him, sheriff s officials announce they ll scale back the search while ramping up the investigation. it was the second appearance by the boy s family who on friday broke the silence they kept for a week taking public their private grief. kyron, we miss you. we love you and we need you home right now. we re doing everything we can to work with law enforcement and search and the rescue crews to make sure that tuck get back to us as soon as possible. reporter: since kyron s disappearance, more than 1,300 searchers have combed the area for clues or any sign of the boy. the effort to find kyron has taken an emotional toll on many in the community including the sheriff himself. well, it s very difficult. i ve looked at his picture. numerous times. i ve spoken with the family. you become extremely attached. it s a child. reporter: the sheriff says they re hoping that reward now being offered will bring them new clues. natalie, back to you. let s hope so. janet, thank you. in iraq a symbolic step forward as that country s new parliament met this morning for the first time since elections three months ago. thousands of passengers are stranded after spirit airlines canceled all of its flights through tuesday because of a strike by its pilots. famed country music singer and sausage businessman jimmy dean died last night in virginia. known for his song big bad john jimmy dean was 81. the boston sell it particulars are tup three games to two in the best of seven nba finals after beating the lakers last night, 929-86. game six is tomorrow night in l.a. and if you spent the weekend watching the world cup, no doubt you heard them, those loud horns called the vuvuzelas blow all 90 minutes of the game. world cup organizers are considering a ban. the horns reached more than 130 decibels, almost as loud as a jet engine. matt, ann, back to you guys. good morning here on this monday morning, we ve got the high humidity in place. i m meteorologist tom kierein. at this hour, temperatures are in upper 70s in the bay. in montgomery, arlington, fairfax, prince georges county, mid-70s. highs reaching low 90s. a slight chance of an afternoon storm, otherwise, hazy sunshine. and tomorrow, a break from the high heat and the high humidity, into the mid-80s. the humidity returns on wednesday, mostly cloudy, maybe a morning shower, but a greater chance of afte that s your latest weather. matt? i do have one. do you know how to use it? do you know how to use it, will it always work? we will show you what happened. we tested out some very popular kinds of fire extinguisher and it s not always pretty, matt, as you can see. also ahead, we ll talk to a 5-year-old boy who was severely burned almost a year ago after becoming trapped in a burning van. strangers helped pull him to safety. this morning we ll get the latest on his remarkable recovery. good news. and also a fourth grade teacher was fired for conceiving a child out of wedlock with her fiance. we ll speak with her exclusively about what happened. but we want to begin this half hour with some new developments in the joran van der sloot case. we have two reports this morning. in a moment we re going to head to aruba and hear from natalee holloway s father. but first van der sloot s new life inside one of peru s most notorious prisons. nbc s michelle kosinski is in lima with that part of the story. good morning, michelle. reporter: good morning, matt. no more steak and special treatment for joran van der sloot as he had in a holding cell when police wanted him to talk. he s moved into a prison known for its and terrible conditions. he is one of the very few who has a cell by himself for his safety. he is reportedly worried about his own life here. joran van der sloot is finding a rough road here. international press, some on motor bikes, and furious residents shouting murderer at what may be the most hated 22-year-old in peru. they should kill this sleaze bag. this guy never should have been in peru. reporter: the tougher crowd was in court charging van der sloot with aggravated, p premeditated murder. they hauled him off to castro castro prison, maximum security. described here as hell. this video was run of van der sloot on the inside, led to his private cell near the director s office. have you been sick? no. only my head feels bad. reporter: reportedly he is miserable, sleeping on the floor, so afraid for his own life he allegedly asked to be moved to aruba in exchange for information about natalee holloway. authorities here say he showed no mercy to stephany flores, the young business student he confessed to beating to death in his hotel room. here they are on surveillance video playing poker at a casino. she cashes out. police say soon-to-be his victim, that he targeted her for her money. they went back to his hotel room to play poker online and here is van der sloot a few hours later, looking around the hallway, leaving with two cups, then coming back with someone to unlock the door for him. why didn t stephany open it? police say she may already have been killed. in his version of events, he opened his computer and right away there was a facebook message, a death threat related to his being a suspect in natalee holloway s disappearance. i always get those mess amgs, he said in his psychological evaluation. he said he started to explain that he had done nothing wrong when suddenly he hit stephany. i didn t know what shifs thinking and i had an impulse reaction. translator: with his elbow he struck a blow to the bridge of her nose. reporter: he says he slammed her to the floor, broke her neck, and when she was still alive suffocated her with his shirt. now he could spend months here awaiting trial facing up to 35 years under the most secure conditions for the most serious crime. so this story he told that the two of them were reading an e-mail and then all of a sudden he just hits her in the face, police don t necessarily believe all that. they say there are gaps in that part of his story, that certain details he told them he just didn t remember. and also if this is true now that he s going to give officials information about natalee holloway in return for them moving him out of the country again raises questions about just how much truth he s willing to tell here. matt? all right, michelle kosinski in peru. thank you very much. now to aruba where natalee holloway s father has just arrived with the hopes that joran van der sloot s arrest will lead to new information on his daughter. nbc s jeff rossen is in aruba with that part of the story. good morning to you. reporter: hey, matt, good morning to you. the family has been through so much over the years, haven t they? they ve been to this island, the holloways have, so many times looking for natalee. as you know the investigators have searched in the ocean. they ve searched on land in aruba as well working on tips, some of them fake tips from joran van der sloot himself. and so it says a lot that natalee s father is back here now clearly hoping this is a big break everyone has been waiting for. natalee holloway s father arrived here in aruba sunday afternoon. how are you. good. reporter: hoping new information will jump-start a new search for his daughter, missing on this island for more than five years. you have new hope being here now? always have hope. yeah. reporter: do you think joran will finally give up what you consider the truth about where natalee is? cross my fingers. reporter: this week holloway will meet with officials waiting to find out if joran is willing to disclose the real location of natalee holloway s remains. this is aruba s prosecutor. what would it take for you to search for natalee s remains again? oh, it would take new information, and i mean really new information. that means if we get a rehashed old story that would not be sufficient ground. reporter: even if the arubans don t act, the holloways private team search will. tim miller here in aruba right now ready to look for natalee. tomorrow. reporter: if joran says that? i think he s going to tell the truth. he has nothing to lose now. nobody is going to pay him this could actual ly help him. so if she s in the water, we re ready. reporter: all of this playing out as tourists bask in the hot aruban sun enjoying the deep blue ocean this island is famous for. locals want van der sloot to come clean and end what they call aruba s nightmare. he ruined the name of the dutch people and he ruined the name of our island all over the world. reporter: do you think joran will tell the truth? we tried out a few on grease fires with the help of the test kitchen. a small kitchen fire can turn deadly, not much time to locate that fire extinguisher and attempts to put it out yourself. so how do you know which extinguish extinguisher to buy and once you have it, what do you do with it? it s america s test kitchen. america s test kitchen often tests kitchen products to determine what s most useful for consumers without accepting money from advertisers. they looked at several different extinguishers to find out which ones performed the best and were easy to use. we wanted to see for ourselves, so with america s test kitchen and under the careful supervision of the worcester fire department training center, we were ready for action. if you have a small fire an insipient fire, notify the fire department. you can try to put it out with an extinguisher, rated for home use. the classic fire extinguisher, abc rated to fight all kinds of fires. pull the pin. with a grease fire like this aim sort of at the top of the fire and then i m squeezing. within seconds, the fire was out. so this passed the test. this one is recommended. really easy to use. did a great job. next, the home hero, a fancy version of an extinguisher. and the idea is it s pretty enough to leave out so you don t forget where it is. it has a squeeze button rather than sort of squeeze lever so you have to pull the pin like you do on a regular it was really kind of hard to get down. let s get out of here. it s really smoky. and i think if you aren t strong enough, this was a hard button to push down. not crazy about this even though it s pretty. that s not what a fire extinguisher is supposed to be. a smaller extinguisher, instead of removing a pin you break off a tab. it s not hard to do but we felt like if you were nervous, get your finger under there and you have to break it or if you have arthritis and you don t have the best fine motor skills, this is tricky to use. squeeze it like a trigger. oh, no. oh, no, jack. there we go. it s even hotter. it didn t work, did it? well, this one, we found eventually would get the fire out but the first thing it does is it blows the fire up and if you don t keep going, a lot of people are not going to keep going because they re going to be scared not a good start. we gave it a second try. besides the wimpy start it found success. eventually it s coming out but it s really we did finally get it out. there s almost nothing left in the can. it s basically empty. and last, the fire blanket which is supposed to suffocate a fire and not damage appliances. you put the blanket over the fire and switch off heat and leave covered until cool, minimum time 20 minutes, which is one of the reasons we weren t that wild about it is you have to leave the blanket in place burning for 20 minutes? melissa lee of the new york stock exchange, thank you. in south carolina a man no one seems to have heard of is now the newly minted democratic nominee for u.s. senate. nbc s kelly o donnell is in columbia with the details. kelly, good morning. reporter: good morning, natalie. democrat from here in south carolina are saying something is wrong. how does a guy with no campaign and a criminal charge win big? [ male announcer ] give dad a card. it s the biggest little thing you can do. girls, we re just moving across town. back now at 8:10. imagine getting fired from your job for being intimate with your husband-to-be. well, that s what happened to this florida teacher, jarretta hamilton. we ll be speaking to her and her husband exclusively in just a moment. but first, nbc s mike taibbi has her story. reporter: it was a year ago april when fourth grade teacher jarretta hamilton applied for maternity leave from the private sou southland christian school in st. cloud, florida. when asked when she d become prek nant, she answered honestly, about three weeks before she and her husband sam were married. a week later she was fired and while the language in the school s letter to her attorney was old-fashioned, the meaning was clear. jarretta was asked not to return because of a moral issue that was disregarded, namely, fornication, sex outside of marriage. the school principal ennis said the honest answer did her in. do you stand behind the fact you believe the teacher committed an immoral act of her own confession, yes, sir. thank you. reporter: you stand behind that action? yes. absolutely. reporter: other private, religious schools have been sued with mixed results for firing teachers who became pregnant in ways that violated religious teachings. those lawsuits filed under federal laws barring gender or pregnancy discrimination. in this case, though, the school says it s not about the pregnancy that produced now 8-month-old sarah but a teacher s choice to disregard school standards and have sex outside of marriage, an immoral action. hamilton s lawyer is charging discrimination. this is not a church. this is a school. they went and told the parents of her students and not only did they say she was terminated, they said the details. reporter: the case has won hamilton growing support. we need good teachers. we don t have enough of them. if i knew her, i would tell her go all the way with the lawsuit. reporter: and while school administrators are now saying no comment, in their earlier letter they said we request that jarretta withdraw her complaint and consider the testimony of the lord. for today, mike taibbi, nbc news, new york. jarretta hamilton is joining us now exclusively along with her husband, samuel, and their 8-month-old daughter, sarah, as well as their attorney. good morning to all of you. so southland christian school, as you just heard, we reached out to them but since the lawsuit was pending they didn t really want to give us any comment. so let me then ask you, when you approached the principal, jarretta, and you said that you were pregnant and he asked you well, first of all, what happened when you told him that you were pregnant? well, basically i went in there to let him know my husband and i went in together, in fact, in the meeting. i was only requesting the standard six weeks maternity leave and compensation. he questioned in fact, he said, well, i m just trying to do the math here. when did you get married again? and i said, february0th. and then he said, well, did you conceive prior to marriage? and i answered and i told him, yes, it was it came out of nowhere. you were shocked that he asked the question, you said? i was absolutely shocked. it came out of nowhere. i didn t know i didn t think or know i was honest about it. i didn t know it would cost me my job. when you first told him that you were pregnant, is it true he fell back in the chair and had a reaction? what was that reaction? he did. it was definitely not a good reaction. so even before he knew when the baby was conceived, he had a negative reaction to the pregnancy? yes. and so then as this progressed, what really made you upset is that this became public. how did it become public in terms of how long you had been when the baby was conceived? i m not sure i understand what you re asking. how was it made public? your feeling is the school made it public? they definitely did. and when they let me go, they told the entire staff in a staff meeting that i had been fired and the reason why they let me go and then they called all of the parents of my fourth grade students and told them as well. in fact, i had a number of parents call me because they were really upset about it and felt that my performance in the classroom was what mattered and not my personal life. what do you say to people who might say, look, you were working at a christian school and, you know, believes that premarital sex is immoral and that it violates standards and values? this is something that the school stands for. what do you say to people who have taken that position? there was a contract in place that had a specific morality clause, i think it would make a difference. i think at least people would know what they re getting into. i didn t know that this was their that they were going to judge so harshly, that this was the way they felt about premarital sex. i wasn t clear on what their stance was on certain issues. you never signed anything that specifically talked about this? i never did. there is no contract. so where does this leave us legally? where does it leave them legally in terms of this? this is a private school. do they have the ability to do whatever they want in terms of this particular standard, this moral standard? well, the courts have consistently ruled that private schools it s just like any other employer, as long as there s 15 or more employees, they are governed by federal law regarding discrimination. there should be no concern here that this case is a precedent setting case that s going to get involved with the ministerial exception. certainly the pastors and clergy are allowed to make the decisions as far as church personnel, so that s not where this case is going. there s a clear distinction in the courts. between the school and a church. this is these teachers are serving a secular purpose and therefore are governed by the federal laws. meanwhile, sam, i know this has been very difficult. you re holding on to jarretta very tightly and holding on to your baby because it s been a very, very tough time. i know that this is not the end of it. we hope to hear how this works out for you and thank you, jarretta. thank you. thank you, edward. thank you. we have much more coming up including jenna bush hager with robert pattinson to tell us all about that. the lines. the cost. the hassle. express yourself [ female announcer ] why not try a better way? all right, al, thank you very much. all right, up next, trailblazing rock star pat we belong to the darkness pat benatar is one of the most successful female rockers of all time. for more than 30 years she has been turning out hits and blazing a trail for women in the music industry. she won four consecutive grammies and has sold 22 million records. and her video for love is a battlefield was one of the first to successfully run a story driven plot and a music video performance, and she writes about it all in her new book called between a heart and a rock place. pat benatar, good morning. good morning. you know, what s surprising i think for many people who will read this book is that it is about a woman who had so much balance, who has been with the same man in a marriage for 29 years, two beautiful daughters, and yet a rock star. how did you, when so many have not, emerge out of this profession unscathed? well, i d like to say i was really smart and that i did it. i don t know. i just think that it s personality. that s the way that spider and i are. s the way we met and we were really kind of working class kids so it stays with you the whole time and it just didn t really have any effect. and i had the luxuries of having my support with me all the time. my husband. we were together. so it wasn t like being a female out on the road with all the pitfalls. i had my support right with me the whole time. in fact, since you brought him up let s ask you that because this book is in many ways a love letter to this man, your husband. you call him spider. his real name is neal. he was your collaborator, songwriter, producer, lead guitarist. we started the band together in 1979 and when he walked in the door and i saw him, besides all the fabulous chemical and physical attributes that we had together musically, it was perfect. it was exactly what i had been hearing in my head and, like i said, he was the one who was the catalyst and he was able to help me bring it all together. so we began the whole thing together. and you write somewhere in the distance the hallelujah chorus, every nerve ending in my body lit up. i mean, this is a pretty high bar for your daughter. yes, i know. i tell them, don t settle. marry for love. don t be stupid. and you weren t stupid. together you marmarched on. you have a story about the music video. nobody knew how this do this. including us. it was great. we were the second video ever played on mtv. it was in august of 1981, and, you know, we shot it, they called us up three months before and said they had this new idea. none of us had any idea where this was going. okay, that s kind of interesting. truthfully i don t think anybody expected it. the first week it was played in august, after that we couldn t go anywhere anymore. it had changed the world. it changed your world definitely and yet this is a time and still is but there still was a tremendous amount of sexism in the profession and throughout the world and at one point when you actually became pregnant you were told to hide your pregnancy. yeah. this is incredibly hard to believe for people today, to understand especially since it seems to be a prerequisite for celebrities right now. they literally didn t want it was bad enough that i was married but to actually be pregnant, it ruined the whole sex symbol image. it was incredible and it was just one of the things in the long laundry list of all the sexist things that they did while we were together. and yet you never left despite that environment, you were bold. your music, and that s what i think really happened. you seized something women really needed. where did this boldness come from? i think it s just growing up on long island. we came from a working class family and you were scrapping all the time and of the way it the time. i grew up and you had to fight for your position all the time and then as it went on and traveled to radio stations and things like that, there was some kind of programmer that would just tap his leg and say, why don t you sit down here and we ll see if you can get that record played. it fueled everything. we were the first my age group was the first of the young women who were going to try and put the ideology of the women into practice. well, you did. you did for so many of us. pat benatar, thank you so much. and for joining us this morning. the book is lovely. thank you. thank you so much. and the book is called between a heart and a rock place. and coming up next, another star, jane pauley joins us, sharing the story of two women who have taken the road less traveled. back at 8:43 your life calling today. this morning taking the high road. today contributor jane pauley has been working with aarp producing sponsored reports for us here at today. jane, welcome back. good to see you. thank you, matt. wherever you go, there you are. that s a pretty good description of trudy lundgren and her life. somewhere in america a silver motor home is on a never ending voyage. i still can t get over that we re not going home, that we are home for you. we are in our home. reporter: and you ve been doing this for coming up on six years. reporter: trudy and her partner lisa have chosen a life on wheels. do you feel you will come to your senses soon? no. reporter: this is where they used to live, a tiny one-bedroom apartment in new york. trudy had a business as a graphics designer. what was your original plan? it was a situation that was forced upon us by 9/11. my business that i had for 15 years tanked and i was like i can t afford my apartment anymore. i can t afford to live in new york anymore. so we got out. reporter: so they sold the apartment, bought a bus and started cruising the country looking for work. cleaning pools, cashiered at walmart. lisa has been a maid at a hotel. she worked at mcdonald s. there s all kinds of jobs out there. it s just not the job you want but it s a job. reporter: until they found a regular gig, creating guest guides for rv parks. lisa sells the ads. trudy does the graphics. so we need to add more streets in here. right. we are working but look where my office is. and look at the view out of my office and every couple of weeks it changes. reporter: it looks idyllic fishing perfect. reporter: relaxing in a hot spring. a night on the town in vegas. but a vintage bus can be a cranky companion. we are really losing antifreeze. reporter: this is a cheaper lifestyle? in retrospect, no. reporter: you can imagine their gas bill. how to spend a quick 200 bucks. top off your fuel tank. reporter: and your mileage? about six to seven with a tail wind going downhill. reporter: it takes a special person to choose this life. it can be lonely. i m a very social person and so i m much more likely to walk up to somebody in the rv park and start a conversation just so i have someone to talk to. hi there. reporter: you are kind of equal part free spirit, don t fence me in, and the other part has very clearly created a very grounded home. it s cozy, actually, in there. at night when we re watching tv it s like one of us is on the couch, one of us is in the chair. we have the dogs and it s home. reporter: when are we turning 60? i actually had my entire family sick on a vacation overseas and i was the only one who was not sick. because you went nowhere near them. good girl. let s get a check of the headlines. natalie is at the news desk while ann is out here with us. good morning to you guys and good morning, everyone. today it s back to the gulf coast for president obama. his first stop mississippi. it s his fourth visit to the , meanwhile, deployed eak underseas sensors to try to measure the flow of crude oil. president obama wants bp to create a major multibillio multibillion-dollar fund to compensate oil spill victims. he plans to speak it to the nation about the oil spill tomorrow night. scovered almost $1 trillion worth of untapped mineral deposits in afghanistan. the paper said it could turn afghanistan into one of the world s most lucrative mining centers. gas prices are down more than 11 cents a gallon over the last two weeks. the lummeburg survey says the average survey for regular is $2.72 a gallon. first lady michelle obama got a rousing welcome at california s camp pendleton on sunday. speaking to about 3,500 service members and their families, mrs. obama challenged americans to show more support for the military. and it was a fiery return to earth during the night. the first unmanned spacecraft to land on an asteroid and bring back samples. while most of the japanese craft burned up, the sample landed in australia. a california teen is speaking out for the first time since being rescued over the weekend after attempting to become the youngest person to sail around the world solo. mbs s miguel has more. reporter: a french vessel plus the 16-year-old out of the water. after the rescue she spoke to an australian radio station. i m really lucky there was a boat that could come and get me where i was. i m still in shock from everything that s happened. reporter: in january abby set sail from southern california. she made it around cape horn, across the atlantic and rounded cape town but thursday halfway around the world and halfway to australia her mast broke in rough seas. emergency beacons went off and her nearly six-month journey came to an end. on her blog abby shut down criticism she was too young to make the trip saying i was in a storm. since when does age create gigantic waives and storms? al, thank you. long a suspect in the natalee holloway disappearance, joran van der sloot now spends his days locked inside a notorious peruvian prison awaiting trial on the charges he now faces, first-degree murder and robbery. nbc s michelle kosinski is live in lima with the very latest. good morning, michelle. reporter: good morning, natalie. no more steak and special treatment for joran van der sloot. as he was getting in a holding cell when police wanted him to talk. now they have him in castro castro prison. like all prisons here known for its overcrowding and terrible conditions. he does, though, have a cell to himself, one of the few people here to have that privilege. that s for his own safety and he s reportedly afraid for his life here. joran van der sloot is finding a rough road here. barely pulled past throngs of international press, some on motor bikes and furious residents shouting murderer at what may be the most hated 22-year-old in peru. translator: they should kill this sleaze bag. this guy never should have been in peru. reporter: but the tougher crowd was in court charging van der sloot with ing a aggravated premeditated murder. they hauled him off to castro castro prison, maximum security, once punished by the court of human rights for violent attacks on inmates. described here as hell. a local tv station ran this video of van der sloot on the inside, led to his private cell near the director s office. translator: have you been sick? translator: no, only my head feels bad. reporter: reportedly he is miserable, sleeping on the floor, so afraid for his own life he allegedly asked to be moved to aruba in exchange for information about natalee holloway. but authorities here say he showed no mercy to stephany flores, the young business student he confessed to beating to death in his hotel room. here they are on surveillance video playing poker. she cashes out. police say soon-to-be his victim, that he targeted her for her money. they went back to his hotel room to play poker online. and here is van der sloot a few hours later looking around the hallway, leaving with two cups and coming back with someone to unlock the door again for him. why didn t stephany open it? police believe she may already have been killed. in his version of events, he had opened his computer and right away there was a facebook message, a death threat related to his being a suspect in natalee holloway s disappearance. i always get those messages, he said in his psychological evaluation. he said he started to explain that he had done nothing wrong when suddenly he hit stephany. i didn t know what she was thinking and i had an impulse reaction. translator: with his elbow he struck a blow to the bridge of the nose. reporter: slammed her to the floor, broke her neck, and when she was still alive, suffocated her with his shirt. now he could spend months here awaiting trial facing up to 35 years under the most secure conditions for the most serious crime. so this story he told that they were looking at an e-mail and then all of a sudden he just hits her this the face, police don t necessarily believe all of that. they say there are gaps in that part of his story and certain details he told them he simply doesn t remember. also, if this is true that he s offering information on natalee holloway in return for them moving him out of the country or something, that once again raises questions about just how much truth he s willing to share now. natalee? all right. he s been known to tell many lies. michelle kosinski, thanks so much. dan abrams, good morning to you. it seems like the evidence is really mounting against joran van der sloot. this time you have a body, of course, you have this confession whether or not it s a valid ood on his clothes, the ave surveillance video which he shows he s the only person going in and out of that room. is it pretty much an open and shut case? i think this is one of these cases where joran van der sloot and his attorney are going to have to figure out how do we deal with the damage here, which is i don t think they re thinking about how to win at trial. i think they re thinking about how to reduce his sentence because, as you point out, the video surveillance tape in and of itself is such powerful evidence. they could argue the convention was coerced, it wasn t a legitimate confession, et cetera. okay. let s even assume they do that. the videotape of him being seen with her at the casino, walking into his hotel room, walking out of his hotel room without her. remember, there are surveillance tapes so they would have seen her leaving if she left the room as well. so that is, i would argue, more powerful evidence than even dna evidence in a case like this. the only person who was with stephany flores in the last hours. that s right. and like he s been known to do on so many past occasions, now he s saying yet again that he wants to lead aruban authorities to where natalee holloway s body is. we ve heard this story many times over and over again but this whole idea of him now saying, send me back to aruba so i can work with the aruban authorities, is that a legitimate tactic on his part or his defense? an interesting effort to avoid sitting in a peruvian jail, but it s not going to work. i mean, the peruvians are not going to say, oh, okay, you want to help solve a crime in aruba, great. we re going to let you out on a murder charge. they have one of their citizens who has been murdered. they are not going to just let him go to aruba to possibly help solve some other crime in aruba. they re going to try him first in peru. look two completely separate cases here, right, even though there is a link perhaps. that s right. and i think because there s been so much media attention on the gn natalee holloway case, people are saying why wouldn t they let him go to aruba to deal with the aruban authorities in the natalee holloway case? the answer is because as far as peru is concerned, they have a very, very strong case against this guy, whoever he is they re not going to let him go. that s right. they re not going to let him go. they may try to work with the arubian authorities to get him help but that s about it. we re haeearing from the solicitor general they re trying to contact the peruvian authorities but they aren t returning their phone calls. what does that tell you about where the two cases sfli. it tells you again his strategy of trying to offer up information isn t going to work but i would think in a case this high profile where the world is watching, they ll start returning some phone calls. the peruvians are going to start returning the arubans phone calls but it will be a diplomatic effort. it will be basically to say we hear you. we re going to try to get information for you. we ll pass along anything we get. but the one thing they re not going to pass along is joran van der sloot. that s right. dan abrams, as always, thanks so much. great to have you here. coming up, a medical check list to keep you healthy on your summer travels. and later, some great father s may i help you? it shocks it and stops cooking so we re going to sweat this out. put some vegetable stock. i don t use chicken stock because i don t want the chicken flavor to come through. i want the asparagus flavor to come through. you don t use any chicken stock for any of your soups that are cold. i don t want the viscosity plus it s usually a vegetable soup so i want the flavor to shine through. we sim they amer this for 20 mi. put it in a blender. i cooked half and blanched half. keep this chilled. it will keep the green color vibrant. otherwise it would be like a murky color. yeah, we want it to stay green. we re going to wear it and then drink it. taste that. totally refreshing. how is that? that s cold. and does it take a long time to chill? two hours. that s really good. refrigerate it overnight. it s almost creamy but it doesn t have cream in it. no cream whatsoever. this is thoomato soup. we re going to add some olive oil. this is raw now. you re not even going to cook this. raw. garlic. celery seed. sherry vinegar and we re just going to puree that. right. cover it first. you re so funny. and that s it. you re saying we don t have to cook this at all. just blend it up. done. season it. salt and pepper. like a gazpacho. basil guacamole and then a goat cheese crouton. they re so simple and you don t have to sweat. that s for you. i have to tell you something. if you really grind it up like you just did, it doesn t have any chunks so your kids who don t want chunks will probably like that. that is really flavorful. here is my favorite. this is white gazpacho. the regular garnish, it s olive oil, water, sliced almonds, bread crumb, salt, and garlic. step back. we re going to pulse this. there we go. hey. all right. it s really yummy. puree that. i have the grapes. throw the grapes in there. adds a touch of sweetness to balance the garlic. and then i m going to garnish it. what is that? [ female announcer ] kellogg s fiber plus bars. you couldn t wish for more. we re back in the kitchen. we father s day just a week awake, in the kitchen italian style. and here with a couple recipes from the famous rao s cookbook. and it s been 100 year, guys since you ve had a talb here in new york. the hardest table in the world to get. why is that? you ve got to go to las vegas and eat with franky jr. there. you re hanging out in vegas. vegas in june. rao s in vegas. making two dishes. doing one sausage dish and one right. what are we making here? what s happening here? going to take a steak lightly dusted with salt and pepper. any particular kind of steak? a rib eye. that s the tastiest, right? right. nice fat and everything. a quarter cup of vegetable oil. ah. the sizzle. uh-huh. going to let it here for about four minutes, until it s really golden brown. okay. some of that color there. right. then you re going to flip it over. do the same on the other side. do the same on the other side. a quick sear is all you re doing there? pretty much. okay. then we re going to add peppers, onions in here. uh-huh. along with some mushrooms. you don t dice. you make it nice and hearty. chunky. big and chunky. then a half a cup of white wine. and you re going to let this cook for about another six minutes or so. the vegetables are going to get tender. in a moment, once this comes to a boil, we ll get the fresh tomatoes. and then that looks really good. voila. pour this on here and let it simmer. and a couple of cloves of garlic. you can smash those to get a little more flavor out of them. got you. and throw it right in. great for the grill. you can do this in a tin baking tray. so you don t have to make a mess. grill the steaks, put them back in and saute. reduce to. it s absolutely wonderful. about how long? that s about four minutes afterwards. okay. it s time to have dadio show us thousand make the the old back here. i do the sausage because i can t afford steak. he does the steak. what we do, a little olive oil in here. this gets a littled heated up. once it s heated up, a little sausage. italian sassage. you what you like. you can use chicken sausage, turkey, whatever you like. and i can t think of a sausage without thinking of jimmy dean. he passed away. i m sorry. god bless his family. that s all right. this is all brown up. because we got to do this quick now. that s what it s going to look like. when these are all brown, then you add your vegetables. peppers. you add onions, do a little salt. a little pepper. garlic in there? then we put about, a half teaspoon to a teaspoon of minced garlic. he mythsed his, frank. i know. and then now you just keep sauteing this, turning it. until tender. the vegetables will soften up, and you ve done everything. it s going to wind up looking like that. if you have any extras, drain that off and then you plate it. and his own wine, i understand? it does. yes, go. a cabernet. we have merlot, chardonnay. wines from italy. all delicious. and this is a summer salad. we use the cal mara olives. and you can use black pitted olives. mozzarella, basil, sun dried poe tomatoes, a little garlic and tomato. try a little of that, too. try a little of that. this is by the way, in one of those pieces of sausage you re going to find that $100 bill. there s no telling what you re going to find at raos if you know what i mean. everything is delicious. thank you both. happy father s day. thank you. thank you very much. we ll be back with more of today on nbc. time to check in with ms. sarah a. couple time wes did a segment on kids. spoiled kids, treat you like an atm machine. we ll have an expert next week has will hopefully give you practical solutions. good. that hit a cord. didn t? that hit a real t.d. a serious button on everybody, because the world s being taken over by spoiled kids. right. it s true. you know who you are. that s the problem. you don t know who you are. right. tomorrow, how to be the perfect house guest. hoda, you re an excellent house guest bishs the way. you are. if you ve been locking fon straight hair, we have functions for you plus a special live performance. it s going to be very good. really? they won t us who. it s a secret. see you all tomorrow. okay? i believe it s tuesday. oh, that s right. captions by vitac www.vitac.com
