it s beginning to look a little bit like christmas in parts of the northeast. we have been having below normal temperatures. now you re looking you will look at the falling snow in concord, new hampshire. by tonight up to a foot of snow. maybe more possible in areas of new england. on the other coast, los angeles set a record of 92 degrees on thursday. we re going to have the latest on the forecast coming up. also this morning, one woman s cosmetic surgery horror story. she sued her surgeon after a procedure left her unable to blink or close her eyes all the way, even when she sleeps. how is she coping with the 30 painful surgeries she now needs to connect the damage. we ll talk to her coming up this morning. plus, have you ever cried at work? is it appropriate? what if a co-workerer co comes your office and bursts into tears? should that co-worker apologize the day after? i hug you all the time when you cry. you bring it out of me. it s a common workplace dilemma. yes. we re going to talk about it. let s begin with the springtime storm. jim cantore is up in concord, new hampshire. it s coming down, jim. good morning. reporter: good morning, matt. a quarter er of the year is ove and we re back into winter here. we have already tasted the 70-degree days here but it s beautiful in concord. the trees are all flock and there s the problem. you have a very heavy wet snow as would be the case. it s 32 degrees with the snow coming down. so that weight will mean power outages. you can bend over, grab some of the snow and you can see the water content that we have in this. there is a lot of water here and occasionally it makes its way out of the snow. not the case there, but believe me there is a lot of water and weight to the snow sticking to everything. we are expect a foot across the mountains. once the wind kicks in, the weight of the snow that didn t cause power outages, the wind may do us all in here. the mountains should benefit as the wonderful ski season in new england continues. by the way, matt, as we get into tuesday there is a forecast for severe thunderstorms. so the wild swings of spring will make its way this far north as well. back in some areas but not before really wreaking havoc in parts of new england. we have a number of winter storm warnings in blue. winter weather advisories posted here and there in the poconos. it will continue to deepen off the coast. snow continues in up state new york through the berkshires, green and white mountains to maine. the hardest hit area will see well over a foot of snow. in the blue, three to six inches but it will begin to wrap up later tonight. matt? we ll get the local forecast in a moment. meanwhile, now we re talking about fallout in the usa tied to japan s nuclear crisis. traces of radiation have been found in milk samples from california and washington state. how concerned should you be in nbc s george lewis is here to put it in perspective. good morning. good morning, matt. california is the number one milk producing state in the country. any talk of radiation in the milk supply has people talking, even as experts say there is no reason to worry. those tiny barely measurable amounts of radiation were probably ingested by cattle in california and washington state as the wind carried it in from japan. minute amounts of iodine 131 for found on march 28 from california and march 25 from washington state. it s really a speck of dust. are we seeing anything new? reporter: this epa lab in alabama is keeping an eye on radiation in the air, water and milk supply. the people in charge say the levels are way below anything that would trigger an alert. we have seen no cause for alarm. the very first samples we got in. reporter: it wasn t the epa but rather state officials who first detected radiation in the california milk supply. while they say it s insignificant, some anti-nuclear power groups say there is ample reason to worry. this accident continues. our concerns grow for the pasturelands, grazing animals, agricultural products and fish from the sea. reporter: in washington state consumers have differing views. it sounds bad. i hope it s not getting into school supplies of milk. reporter: i think a reasonable person would have to conclude there is not a lot to worry about. i ll defer to the experts. if they say there is nothing to worry about, i don t worry about it. reporter: so far that s what they are saying. this is a speck of dust. don t worry. the worry itself is far worse than the dust, the radiation we re talking about. stories. tamron hall is at the news desk this morning. good morning. moammar gadhafi is defiant today despite two high profile defections and report that is his power base and regime are deteriorating. this as the rag tag rebel army is pushed back into eastern libya. nbc s chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in benghazi. good morning. reporter: good morning. in a written statement, gadhafi said the west has started a crusader war between muslims and christians. as you mentioned, for several days gadhafi s troops have been pushing back rebels. we have seen the rebels trying to hold a defensive line about 120 miles outside of benghazi. for the first time, they are standing and fighting. they are firing rockets and mortars directly at gadhafi s troops, even without western air support. so they are doing a little bit better and not retreating, as we have seen them doing and just giving up territory day after day. richard engel, thank you. hundreds of foreignerers in ivory coast are fleeing to a french military base as fighting in that country escalates. an explosion could be heard outside the presidential mansion where supporters of the internationally recognized leader of ivory coast are pushing the incumbent who has refused to leave since november. a judge will hear arguments on the union bill that s divided state lawmakers. governor scott walker has agreed to stop attempts to implement a law cutting union rights. meantime, ohio s governor signed a bill drastically limiting union rights and banning strikes for 360,000 public workers. the house is expected to vote today on a republican-backed bill to cut the federal aviation administration budget by $4 billion and make it more difficult for union workers to unionize. the white house has already threatened to veto the bill. two skydivers in southern california collided in midair causing them to fall 200 feet to their deaths. no one on the ground was injured in the accident. it s under investigation. now to wall street. melissa francis is at the new york stock exchange. job numbers are the hot topic. good morning. that s right. the jobs number is the news of the day. so much of the economy waiting on the jobs number to improve in order to get better. not stocks though, it seems. the dow having the best start to the year as the first quarterer ends since 1999. up better than 6%. good news if you have a 401-k. march auto sales out today. analysts looking for those to improve by 16% versus this time last year. small cars leading the way. back to you. thank you. he s being called the unluckiest man in america. the office worker who chose not to chip in two bucks to buy a mega millions ticket. his co-workers got $19 million each after taxes. mike barth said he paused to buy a candy bar prompting another customer to cut in line buying the ticket before him. he said if he hadn t lost his spot in line he would have fewer millions to his name now. it is 7:10. back to you re seeing out of tampa. widespread damage, uprooted trees and airplanes turned over in an airfield. those have moved on. thankfully,ve thankfully moved and that part of the world will see quieter weather during the afternoon hours. this is all associated with our big northern storm now on the flip side, we ve got the spring warmth. we re talking record highs in parts of the south and southwest from texas into southern california, las vegas hitting the 90 today. we are still going to see the cold weather through the northern tier and grakeat lakes but unsettled weather in through the northwest. that s a look at the weather around the country. here s what you can expect. good morning. just past sunrise now in washington. we have a few lingering sprinkles this morning. we ve had a few wet snowflakes north and west, but all this is beginning to dissipate and temperatures are chilly. we re in the upper 30s now throughout most of the region. 37 at reagan national. and later today up near 50, maybe a little sun breaking out this afternoon, also some gusty winds. we might have an additional sprinkle, though, around noontime. then tomorrow, still a bit blustery, maybe a morning sprinkle, highs mid-50s i ann, back to you. thank you. there is good news about the safety on our roads. the department of transportation reports traffic fatalities are at their lowest levels in six decades and there s been a huge drop in the last five years. tom costello is in maryland with the details on the story. we love good news, tom. reporter: ann, good morning. absolutely. the stats are amazing. the fewest deaths since 1949. we can credit everything from safer, better cars, a dui enforcement, even the roads we drive on. it was the kind of car accident that medics with denver s flight for life know could have a tragic ending. on a mountain highway pat reardon lost control of her suburu, flipped it four times and went off the road. at the hospital they found she had a concussion, cuts and bruises thanks to seat belts and air bags. the trooper that came to interview me said i was undoubtedly alive because of being in that particular car with that kind of protection. reporter: she s not alone. the government says in 2010 traffic fatalities dropped 3% in just one year. and an impressive 25% in five years. for more than 43,000 fatalities in 2005 to under 33,000 last year. at denver health medical center chief surgeon moore says he sees fewer head and chest injuries now than at any time in his career. torn aorta, the most common cause of death at the scene. it s been reduced with air bags. reporter: cars have never been safer. now built to cocoon occupants and absorb the energy of a crash with air bags that protect everyone inside. it s packaging 101. if the box doesn t collapse the ka cargo is better protected. reporter: now systems keep cars on the road while collision avoidance systems keep spaces between cars. meanwhile, dui enforcement has never been tougherer with a .08 blood alcohol level the law nationwide. police don t allow drunk drivers to walk away from the car, drive away from their car. they arrest them. people lose their driving privileges. reporter: and 85% of drivers now wear seat belts while ems response times and techniques have also improved. distracted driving, especially texting while driving are a growing concern, but listen to this number, in 1972, 54,000 people died on the nation s roads. now 33,000 people have died and we have a population of 100 million more. back to you. a stunning change. tom costello, thank you very much for the report. here s meredith. the family of the woman who died in the mansion of august bush i iv, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit. jeff rosen has details on that. good morning. reporter: hey, matt. good morning. around here the busch family is like royalty. not that bush family. the busch as in anheiser-busch. they live in a mansion a few miles from here and inside the gates of the long-winding driveway, apparently august busch, iv, said he found his girlfriend dead in his bedroom. it was a drug overdose, but the lawsuit claims it was all busch s fault. inside the walls of this sprawling estate, august busch, iv, the heir to the anheiser-busch fortune said he made an awful discovery in bed. his 27-year-old girlfriend, adrianne martin was motionless. a workerer in the mansion called 911. what s the problem? this girl s not waking up. is she breathing? we don t know. reporter: the divorced mother raising her 8-year-old son was dead. authorities found lethal levels of cocaine and the painkiller oxycodone in her system. now her ex-husband filed this lawsuit on behalf of little blake. it accuses busch of carelessness and negligence leading to the wrongful death of adrianne. the lawsuit claims his actions contributed or caused blake alexander martin to suffer loss of comfort, and come pan i don t know ship companionship. not like they have to prove he gave her the overdose. they can say he was aware of dangerous drug use. he was aware of something happening in his bedroom and took no steps to stop. reporter: busch denied any wrongdoing and prosecutors decided not to charge him. if you had two people sitting in a room doing drugs and one overdoses and dies it doesn t make the other one criminally responsible. reporter: august busch, iv, the former ceoheiser-busch has a checkerered past. in 1983 he crashed a corvette. his passenger, a 22-year-old woman died. police found him disoriented six hours later. no charges were filed n. 1985 he was accused of trying to run down two detectives during a police chase. he was acquitted. and now a lawsuit blaming him for the death of his latest girlfriend. i wouldn t be surprised if he tries as harder as he can to settle. the last thing he s going to want is to have his dirty laundry dragged out in public. reporter: last night i spoke with august busch, iv s attorney by phone and he said, august busch cares about adrianne s son and wants him taken care of. no telling when the settlement could happen or how much money busch would end up paying. jeff rossen in missouri this morning. fugitive? peter alexander has been on the case at the bronx zoo and has details. good morning. reporter: on the case all weekend, thank you very much. it s worth noting that the bronx zoo finally did catch this thing. how do you catch a cobra? apparently with stong tongs and something that looks like a golf club. the snake is safe and so are the rest of us. it s alive! reporter: our not so long national nightmare is over. unlike anaconda or indiana jones this is the real thing. here she is, easily the most famous egyptian cobra alive and welle and, for the moment, in quarantine. she s resting comfortably and secure in the reptile house. reporter: after an unauthorized six-day sabbatical the cobra was found coiled in a dark cornerer inside the zoo s reptile house, just as the director predicted. the key strategy here in recovering the snake was patience. reporter: patience and apparently wood shavings scented with mice and rats in hopes of luring the baby cobra out of hiding. how did the snake sneak out? the zoo is investigating. still, the staff was relieved. their news release alone gave that away. for a little snake tale the story had legs. they found the cobra that was missing from the bronx zoo. it was in lindsay lohan s purse. reporter: and online. in just days the fake twitter feed attracted more than 200,000 followers. leaving wall street. these guys make my skin crawl. then on top of the empire state building, all the people look like little mice, delicious little mice. and finally, if you see a bag of peanuts moving at yankee stadium today, just ignore it. it s probabliy nothing. the cobra was in the zoo all along. this snake is the balloon boy of our generation. she slithered her way into headlines, onto mugs and into this weatherman s unforgettable forecast. snakey, snakey! reporter: we just had to squeeze that into this piece. worth telling you now that the reptile house hopes to open next weekend. they have a naming contest in the works to come up with a name. we haven t heard a word from the twittering snake since the capture but we exchanged e-mails and it said it has something up its sleeve if it had sleeves. whoever was no, i can do it. reporter: william pilots a sea king search and rescue helicopter along this rugged coastline. these are the guys who rush out in the worst conditions to save lives. it gets very hairy. especially with me at the controls. you re trying to find someone who s broken a leg or is lost in the hills. reporter: here, the future king is almost like any other flight lieutenant about to embark on married life. i did rehearsal the other day and my knee started tapping nervously. it s a daunting prospect but very exciting. i m looking forward to it, but there is a lot of planning to be done. reporter: he managed to get the bachelor party out of the way without any press finding it. it s always tough with the media. but it was a military operation. my brother and i are proud of how it went. reporter: the palace said william won t be wearing a wedding band, but kate s will be made from a nugget of the queen s rare welsh gold. william s grandfather, the duke also doesn t wear a ring, though prince charles does on his left pinky. that s how many aristocrats do it. but william doesn t wear rings and it s his preference not to start now. not as if anyone won t know he s taken. today, he gets to show around his grandparents the queen and prince philip. william s other job is to shape the monarchy for the next century to make it an example for the people of modern britain. a few may find themselves saved by prince william. he also invited his search and rescue team to the wedding as well as the widow of his training commander who was killed in afghanistan. the work william and his brother have chosen to do has made an impression on the british people. he ll go to a pub and here people passionately talking about the way they are impressed by the public service they have chosen, risking their lives to do so. matt? michelle kosinski in windy anglesy this morning. we bring in camilla this morning. reporter: good morning, matt. it s not unusually for the queen to visit. she s head of the armed forces but we have an image of her with william 28 days before the wedding and it has people all aflutter this morning. of course. the scheduling has to do with the wedding. she visits bases like r.a.f. valley but it s william s special month in the run-up to the big day. so the queen and duke are appearing there and it has been extra significance. let s talk about the run-up to the big day. there is a lot of speculation and attention. we heard this sound bite from william saying he s nervous. is that unexpected or maybe self-deprecating humor? a bit of both. most grooms are nervous before the wedding day but they aren t getting married in front of billions of people around the world. he s not the most natural public speaker or someone who likes the limelight, but it s par for the course. goodness knows how kate s feeling. we are getting a lot of comments. people making a big deal about the fact that he won t be wearing a wedding band after the marriage. is it much ado about nothing? some wives are suspicious if their husbands don t want to wear a ring, but everyone will know william is taken. traditionally, royal men wear signet rings but he s opted not to do so. we know william is his own man and he does things in his own way. if he says no, so be it. how involved is the queen actually in the planning of the wedding? i m always a clklutz. and then saying, a joke can turn into me falling and a story. the pictures don t help. reporter: three months ago this paparazzi photo got lindsay in deep trouble. she was snapped wearing a necklace she s accused of stealistea stealing from this boutique. lindsay pled not guilty and plans to fight the charges in court. legal experts say the pics will likely holdle no weight in the upcoming trial. the chances of the pictures coming in on the grand theft case are slim to none. they don t show anything either than she s a klutz or may have been out drinking. reporter: the mean girls star is on probation stemming from a 2007 dui arrest. she s been in and out of jail and rehab for violating probation. in january, she finished a three-month stint at the betty ford clinic. just weeks ago she spoke about winning her battle against addiction. as long as i focus on the one thing i need to put first in my life which is my recovery and stuff. i m doing good. reporter: photos of a stumbling lindsay outside a bar aren t necessarily proof she violated probation but paparazzi pics may be a problem for the star. without other evidence the pictures are useless. if there is other evidence out there receipts, witnesses, drinking, they could be powerful. reporter: nbc news reached out to lindsay but we didn t hear back. overnight tmz reported that lindsay denied being drunk saying just because i m out doesn t mean i m drinking. while she awaits her day in court she did receive good news. prosecutors have announced that they will not seek charges against lindsay for battery against that former staffer at the betty ford clinic. ann, back to you. amy, thank you so much. mark garagos is an attorney and christina wanzilak is from full circle intervention. good morning. good morning. mark, you first. do you see anything in what we are hearing in the reports that would indicate to you increased legal problems for lindsay lohan? no, not from the pictures. if there was a term and i don t know if there is. but if there was a term that she s not to be in any place where alcohol is the chief item of sale that could be a problem for the probation. but it will have no effect on the grand theft case. all right. do you see that investigators would use this evidence, these photographs to go seek any other evidence or do you think that investigators from, as you understand how the criminal justice system works, will look at this as just photographs to step away from? i can t imagine any investigator wasting time unless they wanted a free trip to new york to follow up on something like this. i don t think it has any moment or will give anybody pause to do anything. it seems to me more a story about what did lindsay do this week and she s tripping and falling. i don t think anybody judge, d.a. or a defense lawyer will give it much thought at all. let me ask you then, christina. you re an addiction specialist. you have made it a point that you, yourself, have been addicted. when we talk about somebody treated for addiction in this way and seeing what we are seeing this morning, what s your take away? what s your thought about how we should be looking at this? well, certainly, just because she fell on the sidewalk doesn t mean she s drinking or not drinking. i can tell you this sober or not sober, for somebody new in recovery. for somebody on probation trying to change her image, the decision to go bar hopping late at night wasn t a positive one. for somebody that s changed her life, hadn t had a drink since 21 which is almost 18 consecutive years going to bars is high risk behavior. the truth is, ann, it s asking for trouble. point made. in terms of understanding this with compassion because addiction is a disease, often those who are addicted have difficulty having control of themselves. what do you think the best thing for lindsay lohan is given what we know? thank you, tamron. marilyn joins us along with her attorney. good morning. good morning. are you satisfied with the verdict? will the case now proceed? i don t believe it can proceed. this is a question for the attorney. i think the verdict, the amount fell far short of our expectations. that said, we are gratified that we were able to win. malpractice cases arrivinging out of elective cosmetic surgery are difficult to win. i think to some degree the jury said a pox on both your houses that this is somebody who has had more than one plastic surgery. it was the third procedure to the eyes but they wanted to send a message to the doctor as well. marilyn, a lot of people are wondering how you cope. you have undergone already, as i understand it, 30 procedures painful procedures trying to fix this problem. have they corrected them? no. only thing that s happened here is the doctor helped the closure a little bit. she made the eyes smaller and tried to make the closure better for me. there is another alternative available call eyelid skin graft. it s major surgery. there is a lot of risk involved with that. the cosmetic outcome is poor. and the graft failure rate is high. if she goes in and cuts along my eyelash like the surgery is supposed to go and she puts the three centimetres of skin on the eye lid if it doesn t take she has to take it out but you already have a hole in the eye. i could be totally disfigured. then there is a possibility of partial closure because she s had to change the shape of the eyes. i notice that you have a little container of tissues with you at all times. yes. are you unable to close your eyes completely? yes. what happens and what are the risks of that? i m always at risk for eye infections, corneal ulcers, glaucoma because of the medication i have to use and blindness. how do you sleep at night without being able to close your eyes? there is a whole regime from night into day to take care of this. i don t know if you want to hear that. it s rather elaborate. like when i take a shower i have to put gel into my eyes so the water and soap doesn t get into my eyes. by the time the shower is over the gel is washed out. that s how much water gets in my eyes. it sounds like a nightmare. are you able to sleep for a period of time? well, you have to do things like put a lot of gel in your ey eyes, medication, have a vaporizer running and a mask to protect your eyes. once the eyelids relax they retract and your eyes are open. you could easily scratch them. it s a cautionary tale. i think everyone is wishing that you find a good solution for yourself. thank you. marilyn leisz, thank you very much for talking to us. thank you. thank you for joining us as well. . coming up, is it ever okay to cry at work? today we look at the behaviors that are frowned upon in the work place. sarah, good morning. reporter: good morning, matt. the new book it s always personal details reasons behind crying and yelling that can happen at work. i discovered it turns out that expressing emotion in the workplace gets everyone a little worked up. honey, don t cry, please. reporter: bring on the waterworks. it s a scene well played out in the movies. oh, god. reporter: hollywood isn t the only place that s perfected the act of crying. in a recent study more than 40% of women admitted to crying at work compared to just 9% on the men s side. how do you feel about crying in the workplace? i decided to take my own unofficial poll. how do you feel about someone crying? you are the big boss. there is a perpetual box of kleenex on my desk. your boss and co-workers should never see you cry. i try not to cry that often. it s weird. it s not a place to bring personal issues. put your head on my busom. there you go. i do think there is a line. i try to bite the lip. except for when kathie lee sings. everyone has a story that s when i really start wailing. never cry at work. never? never. reporter: what about someone being over worked and exhausted. no can do. there s no crying! there s no crying in baseball! sometimes it can be a distraction or hurt you. what do you think, meredith? i think when i think of this workplace i want to cry. it can be an emotional place. sometimes people will let their emotions show. crying is for those who can. it can brand you as a woman. i m a pretty girl when i cry. i get the nice pink flush. me, too. it s not the worst thing. al is a cryer. yes? al has an emotional side. he cries watching the a team . exactly. don t worry. don t worry. i m not going to do what you all think i m going to do which is just flip out. reporter: with nearly three-quarters of americans feeling frustrated at work, anger and emotion are out there. there are other ways to express your anger. i m mad as hell. and i m not going to take it anymore. so there is no tissue ceiling. people from entry level to management reported that they have shed tears at work. matt? thank you very much. ann kramer is author of the book. is it okay to cry at work? i think it is. it s our most natural emotional reset button we have. it s something in your life that warrants attention. here s the statistic. women under 45 are ten times more likely to cry at work than men over the age of 45. that s right. we found it in our survey. the point is the older you bet get, the better you get at emotion regulation. women are hard-wired to cry in a way that men are not which is another piece of the statistic. tear ducts ready to let the water works go. our tear ducts are different! give me the crib notes on this. i was working at nickelodeon as a senior vice president and the chairman called me after i had done a gigantic deal with sony music to chastise me that the stock price didn t move. it came out of left field. exploded, screamed at you on the phone. never said good-bye, hung up. there were people in the room that didn t hear the call but knew something was going wrong. what caused the waterworks? his anger or the embarrassment? the shock and my responsive anger. often when women end up crying at work what they really want to do is get angry. they feel powerless to do so because they are in a position that s junior to somebody. how should a woman, since we are talking mostly about women, take it if they react emotionally and a co-worker says, don t take it personally, it s just business. is that the right approach? it s always personal. the fact is in this society we are working 24/7 all the time giving our hearts and blood to our jobs. we want to have value there. we want to have our emotions connected. it brings out the best in us. it s not personal. when you do cry it brings out certain emotions in other people. women asked about another woman crying in the workplace say they view that woman as unstable. a man asked about a woman said he tends to view the woman as unprofessional. that s a big difference. a huge difference. women carry the baggage of when we went to work in the 60s, having to man up, act like a man. there is the famous ad, whatever you do, don t let them see you cry. go to the bathroom. with us being 50% of the work force we can step back and change that behavior. this happened in my office where a female employee has come in to tell me they are upset about something and started crying. how am i supposed to handle that? do i give that person a hug in the workplace? hand over a tissue? what do i say? the important thing to do is acknowledge that something s happening to that person and say, look, let me give you a moment to compose yourself. a tissue is a good thing because it shows compassion. then say, can we address this? don t deny it or it becomes something that never gets fixed. for the woman crying, should she approach the people she cried to and apologize? i don t think so. she should use her judgment and if possible say, look, i was overwhelmed for x, y, z yesterday. i m over it. or notd z yesterday but i m over it. or not. or i need this kind of help. 8:26 is your time now, 41 degrees. another dreary day in the nation s capital. when will things finally cheer up? specifically what s going on with the housing market you have buyers on the sidelines waiting for the market to bottom. price is just one thing to take into consideration. mortgage rates, that s the other big one. they re not bothering with that. not taking into consideration that mortgage rates are on the rise. that could counteract the bottoming of the housing market. even if housing prices fall 5 to 7% this year as many expect them to, rates go on the rise and you lose. so you should be researching the loan options. it s interesting. there was an analysis that found we are spending twice as much time researching a car purchase as a loan. oh. crazy. your home is your biggest investment. 31% of consumers are spending two hours or less researching their loan options. about as much time as they spent researching a vacation. okay, mom. research the loan options. get a lot of loan quotes. you want the best deal and to save thousands. it does add up to thousands. another mistake is to rely on what you call retirement crutches. like? you see it specifically with women in retirement, unfortunately. a lot of women rely on their spouses. one in four rely on their husband s pension to get them through their old age. 50% of women rely on social security versus 33% you call it a crutch. you should not rely on these things. 6 of 10 rely on friends and family members for retirement advice. what do you say to women who maybe didn t work as much as their husbands? you have to take the initiative to self-educate, bring in the help of a professional here. you cannot rely on these financial crutches. nine of ten women will be solely responsible for their finances at some point. we are living longer than men. and 50% of marriages end in divorce. take a greater initiative. top financial adviser or sock money away? a financial adviser is one way to go and more women are getting to the point where they are considering that. still, women are considering on that and they should not be. now, not having financial goals. this is a bad one. the number one goal should be about retirement? it should be a priority. you want to look at where you want to be five, ten years down the line. do you want to be debt-free, own a home. look at your goals, put a plan in motion and get going. if you don t have financial goals you are much less inclined to save anything. the other thing you say is a mistake is to not have an emergency kind of fund. this stops people. you don t know how much is an emergency. you know you can have an emergency or an emergency. how much? fewer than 4 of 10 americans have a fully funded emergency account which is crazy. it s taking 37 weeks on average to find a new job. you need to have that cushion. these days you need six to 12 months in the emergency account. put it in a basic money market so it s easily accessible and you re not relying on the credit card if something goes wrong. is there anything we re doing right? we re working longer because we have to because we don t have a retirement plan in place. so we are starting to get our ducks in a row a little bit. we re rebounding from what s happening over the past couple of years. we re doing that right. vera, you re helping. we have to be mindful. it s easy to have this bite us later. take a portion of the tax refund and put it to the emergency fund. good advice, vera. coming up next, how healthy is your bedroom from dust mites to mold? [ female announcer ] new purifying facial cleanser from the new line of neutrogena naturals. this morning on today s health how healthy is your bedroom? most people spend a third of their lives in their bedroom but that means while you re sleeping hidden dust mites or poorly placed electronics could be under mining your health. dr. raj is from health magazine and professor at nyu medical center. good morning. good morning. this could affect your quality of sleep and maybe your mood and everything else once you re awake. absolutely. we spend at least eight hours in the bedroom. we want to make sure it is conducive to health. you have a list of things we should look into. the first is serious. mold can create serious health problems. sure. mold can trigger allergy symptoms and asthma in some people. it s not something you can easily see. if there is potential mold you want to look for leaks in the bedroom. you definitely need to plug them up, clean the area with bleach. make sure it s not a humid area. mold loves humidity. using a dehumidifier or air conditioner would do the same thing to prevent mold and symptoms associated with it like watery eyes, itchy nose and wheezing. if you have the symptoms should you go to the doctor? you should. you want to be diagnosed with asthma if that s what you have or allergies. just taking care of mold may not be the whole answer. you may need medication as well. all right. dust mites, not bed bugs which we have talked so much about. you say be on the lookout for dust mites. what are they? tiny little creatures you can t see. you can t see them? they re tiny but they feed on dead skin cells which is what dust consists of. you want to get rid of the dust and the way you do it is using damp cloths, not a dry cloth which redistributes the dust. vacuum with a hepa filter. make sure you don t have much wall to wall carpeting. area rugs or wood floors are better. washing sheets in hot water helps as well. dust mites trigger allergies in some people. this is interesting. you also look at pillow and suggest latex pillows. why? what s the difference? for some people synthetic foam pillows emit chemicals that can trigger headaches in some people, nausea. that can, of course, affect your ability to get a good night s rest. if you are experiencing those symptoms, try switching to a natural rubber or latex pillow. are they comfortable? they are. it s made from a more natural substance and it won t have the same triggering effect of the allergy symptoms. if you have a pillow you love you say there are pillow covers. sure. you have something here? the pillows we are talking about are underneath and the 100% organic cotton cover prevents you from being exposed to the chemicals. and the lighting. people believe natural light is good in the bedroom. what do you suggest? it s good in the daytime but at night you want darkness. melatonin is released and helps regulate the sleep/wake cycle. it s related to how dark it is. so get the blackout curtains or shades to help. having adequate melatonin levels can affect even blood pressure or glucose. so make sure you re getting a good night s sleep. what about eye covers? they look silly, but they work. some people find them uncomfortable. if you can sleep with them, they work as well. getting electronics out of the bedroom. the tv. this is tough. not only the tv but the cell phone, computer. a lot of people have them in the bedroom. this is a cause of stress when trying to sleep, trying to relax before going to sleep. having the flashing light of the computer, the phone. it s going to make you think about work, more about things you need to do. get it out of the bedroom. that s the best thing to do. you say to declutter. once you have the electronics out, get the bills and other things around on the night stand. clothes all over the place. clutter adds to stress and decreases your ability to fall asleep naturally and easily. keep things in storage bins. throw them in the closet. they don t have to be neat, just out of sight. and healthy sex life. what are the common inhibitors in the bedroom? unfortunately these days with work, kids we don t think of the bedroom as a place of intimacy. look at the room. if you have bright red flannel sheets it may not be the most conducive thing. think silk, candles. beautiful fabrics and things can enhance intimacy. sounds like the playboy mansion. thank you very much. coming up, in the kitchen preparing a fabulous seafood feast featuring soft shell crabs. recipes after this. what s all this? big news! we have another way to help you save. oh, really? how? by bundling. if you get your homeowners and auto insurance together, we give you even more savings. ooh! big bundle. [ sigh ] too bad you re not buying car insurance. like that s easy. oh, it is. progressive direct showed me their rates and the rates of their competitors. i saved hundreds when switching. we could use hundreds. yeah. wake up and smell the savings. out there with a better way. now, that s progressive. this morning it s springtime and getting us in the mood for a fresh seasonal feast are marion, john and elena of fres coby scotto. hey, where s anthony? i told him the segment was cancelled so we could have more time. april fool s! sorry, anthony. hey, it s great to have you here. thank you. i know you will start us off with something that s a seasonal favorite. soft shell crabs that are cleaned. we dredge in flour, salt and pepper. put them in the saute pan. now i use a combination of butter and olive oil. why butter, too? it gives it such a wonderful flavor. they smell good. it s great and it cooks within six minutes time. three minutes on each side. you re using tomatoes for the dish. we re starting with garlic and chili peppers. again, i use the combination of canned tomatoes. and my beautiful cherry tomatoes. those are seasonal, too. very. cook it together for about 20 minutes. can i have my pasta? you can. this is already done with olive oil on top. put my pasta in and there s basil. who s better than that? nobody. this is what the finished product looks like. while we are looking at that, take it away, mr. john. what are we making? poached sea bass with spring vegetables. i have had the fish stock. i m simmering it with tarragon, thyme, olive oil and butter. one of the things when you re poaching sea bass, it s like giving the fish a bath. the reason everyone lines up to get this dish is i basically bathe with the bass. that s so hot. i m not hungry now. so i cleaned the fish which is good but sometimes the fish pops out at the wrong time. you smell a little where s anthony? now as it s simmering i place the sea bass on top. can you use a different fish? any type like a snapper, bronzino. i prefer bathing with the bronzino. you re scaring me today. now i have the spring vegetables. tomato, carrot, radish, onion, asparagus, peas, mushrooms. beautiful. put them all in. sorry. that s okay. three second rule. i ll eat it off the floor. no, no. for about eight minutes. this is what it looks like. and elena has dessert. come on over, everybody. you re making strawberry shortcake. let s talk about the bathing thing. we would never allow him to do that. but he d like it. so this is a simple recipe. it s a couple of different steps. i will ask you to get involved. so here we start with our strawberries. i have added sugar. if you could help me out with the cherry brandy. ooh. then i scrape the inside of a vanilla bean. so cover this and just mix it up like this. this is our syrup. so we can mix this and set it aside. john, turn it off when it mixes. this is what it looks like. perfect. now we are going to make the whipped cream. 40% heavy cream, sugar and vanilla extract. also a little bit more vanilla bean. this is going to whip up nicely. forget the ready-whip. this happens so quickly you can make it fresh every day. it turns into this. oh, yeah. now we have marinated the strawberries in sugar and honey. how long? a few hours. this is the biscuit. we can either buy it or make it fresh. we start with the syrup sprinkled on top. if you can give me some whipped cream. put it on there? yes, yes. i ve still got this. then strawberries. we just layer it. that s what it looks like. oh, my gosh. i ve still got this. john, you don t bathe in this, too, do you? they re in bloom now with the cherry blossoms. i m so anxious for it to get here. i got a plant in my house. i ve seen that plant. it has one leaf. this is a new one. it will be dead by next week. no, it s a gardenia. you got it from the florist. yes, michael s. i ve been dumping water in it. you re going to drown it. no, it needs water. it needs to be moist. test it with your finger, if it s totally dry tell me if i m saying this wrong if it s total drly dry, water it. if it s not, don t water did. you ll kill it. the queen went to visit her son in wales. i go to visit cody and nobody gives a rip. we learned now prince william decided he s not going to wear his wedding ring because apparently aristocratic men don t wear theirs. or they wear them on their pinky. i don t like that. i don t know how i feel about that. i don t think it takes a ring to keep you faithful to someone. obviously that doesn t work all the time. but it does show people that you re committed. i think people know he s getting married. i think most of the world is going to watch him get married, so it s not as if he s going to meet some girl in a bar and she s going to think he s single and available, you know. that is true. i think it s weird, because a lot of men don t wear wedding rings. they say they re married, but they don t feel comfortable with it or they work outside frank wore his wedding ring and on his right hand he wore his hall of fame ring. the wedding ring is dwarfed. the hall of fame thing is so heavy, he might as well not be wearing his wedding ring. lindsay lohan, i guess she fell down, okay, in front of a new york club. people assumed she might be drunk. we want to point out something. look at her shoes. they re like lady gaga shoes. they re ridiculous. when she fell, if you look in her hands, she s clutching her cigarette in her left hand. and her cell phone in her right. that s all a girl needs, hoda. my guess is she just fell on her shoes because she hung onto everything else. these shoes are really, truly outrageous. we re going to have bobby thomas on in a few minutes, and she s the chicest, hippest person in the world, and i think she s going to say they are far out. we decided to bust in on the matt lauer section this morning. we saw he was having a wine segment, so we thought, why not? absolutely. but one thing you don t want to do when you store them is put them in airtight plastic. it traps humidity inside the plastic. again, mold and mold do you. same thing with these bags. don t use these plastic bags. i get my dry cleaning back like this, and i put it in my closet, and then when i need it, i peel the plastic off. you re actually really damaging your clothing, because these dry cleaner bags are trapping in the dry cleaning chemicals and they can discolor and yellow your clothes. that explains it. immediately take it out. get rid of those wire hangers while you re at it, too. and your shoes, hoda, just thrown down there like that. doesn t yours look just like that? i have too much stuff. no matter how many times i clean it and give stuff away, it s still too much. let s start with the hangers, because i think that s the most important thing, having the right hanger. i love flocked hangers because they re thin, so they save space in your closet. they re about a third thinner than a traditional wooden hanger. and it s the natural form of the body as well, so it doesn t give you shoulder pads. the awful puckers that plastic and wire hangers cause. the thicker ones are great for suits and for dresses. where you really have that shoulder line, you want to keep the shoulder shape in place, and you can also use the bottom bar. you can hang things on them. you can hang the pants for a suit. you also hang pants and skirts with those on the end. yeah, because often if you do it this way, you re going to get a crease. when you hang your pants from the cuff, gravity actually takes care of the wrinkleproofing for you. the weight acts as an anchor and it pulls it taut for you. your sweaters, you just fold them up there?
