mike taibbi joins us now with the latest. good morning. reporter: good morning ann. it s hard to ever know what sarah palin is up to. her husband todd was seen getting into an airport taxi outside a jersey city hotel. i don t know what that means for the one nation bus tour, slash, vacation. sarah palin has never been a conventional politician. she said if she makes a white house run she won t do it the conventional way. stop one on the new york leg of the tour pizza dinner with the donald, donald trump, whose birther suspicions about president obama he voiced to meredith on today. i m starting to think he wasn t born here. reporter: and he found at least one prominent politician willing to support him. i do have respect for druch and his candidness. reporter: all of which set the table for a public piece of pizza together though no one seemed that interested in eating. perhaps there was talk about annoying reporters with questions. a press corps largely ignored by palin as she pursued the tour. that s the way we live. we re not used tole kaing a horde of reporters. we were waiting by the bus. reporter: from washington and a grand entrance on a harley to gettysburg and the liberty bell tuesday, palin has attracted crowds and kept the press off balance, never announcing a schedule. to the only question that matters is she running she gave several versions of maybe. we think it is still many weeks away. reporter: her favorable/unfavorable poll numbers don t add up to a win but it s too early for polls to matter. this time last cycle it was surely going to be hillary versus rudy. while political pros say palin will go from contender to pretender sooner than later roger simon sees it kichbtly. i don t think the bus tour is about building the bran or increasing vancouviewership for show. i think she s testing the waters for a bid. reporter: back to the unsecret dinner with the donald. palin emerged to not quite answer the question again. when do you think not for many weeks still. there is a lot of time. reporter: palin confirmed her agenda today will start with ellis island. after that probably boston and new hampshire, but she hasn t said specifically, at least not to us. ann? mike taibbi, thanks. msnbc political analyst michael steele is the former chairman of the republican national committee. good morning. dprogood morning. she s calling it her one nation tour. what is she doing? i think mike had it right. she s testing the water, experimenting with the limits to which she can take an unconventional presidential bid should she choose to do that. that s been her m.o. she certainly has the ability still to draw large crowds and really put the press in sort of atwitter, if you will. that s all part of the unfolding story of sarah palin over the summer. the one thing on her side now is time. i think in a very unconventional way she can approach at least the early stages of apt yal bid in an unconventional manner. she can get the press to write the story. favorably or unfavorably. doesn t matter to her as long as the story is there and that s part of the narrative. part of the narrative this morning is pizza night with donald trump. how much does a trump endorsement mean to republicans at this point? broadly speaking, i don t think it has that kind of impact than let s say a president bush endorsement would have obviously. i think in terms of donald trump, a lot of the establishment in washington, d.c. see the effort as a sideshow. but out there among activists there was a concerted effort to get behind him and his effort. there will be those who pay some attention to who he supports or who he tips his hat to. clearly the dinner with sarah palin caused a lot of excitement and a lot of interest and the possibility with respect to her potential candidacy, but it s not as strong as it would have been had he stayed more in the campaign and had issues that really drove the debate. at the same time, palin seems to delight in having a bad relationship with what she calls the lame stream media. she s angry with republicans as well by not notifying republicans. the lack of information is irking gop leaders in the states palin is expected to visit. could that backfire for sarah palin? not really. sarah palin is not about notifying the head of the party or a political leader in a given state about her whereabouts. she has her twitter network, facebook network, the social connection to students out there. she tells them when she s coming and they show up. you say she doesn t need the party as she missourisoves ahea? doesn t she want a relationship with the party? that s not what i m saying. if you will run an unconventional campaign you won t go through the check box of notifying so and so of plans and get the okay. those leaders will get the information when she wants them to know it. i understand a party chairman being offput by not getting a heads-up, but that s how sarah palin has operated. she s not an establishment creature, not conforming to the ways you traditionally do it. her tradition is directly to her base, to activists who support her, not necessarily the leadership. it doesn t mean she doesn t or does need them. for her, the most important part of it is the people not the leadership. michael steele this morning, thank you so much for your good perspective on this. you got it. here s meredith. ann, thank you. there is new fallout about a lewd picture from anthony weiner s twitter account. he claims he was the victim of a hacker. luke russert is on capitol hill this morning. good morning. reporter: good morning. congressman weiner may have been a victim of the pitfalls of social media. washington is buzzing about whether or not he sent a lewd photograph to a young woman knowingly. the normally blunt weiner shied away from even the most basic of questions. this is the picture sent to a 21-year-old female college student in seattle from anthony weiner s college account. an anonymous man wearing briefs. the congressman said his account was hacked and he s the victim of a prank. this was a prank i have been talking about now for a couple of days. i m not going to allow it to decide what i talk about for the next week or two. the objective of the person who is doing the mischief is to try to distract me from what i m doing. i have made a decision. i m not going to let it happen today. reporter: weiner s refusal to answer basic questions about the incident raised eyebrows on capitol hill. did you send it or not? if i were giving a speech to 45,000 people and someone in the back threw a pie or yelled an insult i would not spend the next two hours of the speech responding to that insult. reporter: some are also questioning why weiner didn t ask police to investigate the matter. his answer was the same. can you say why you haven t asked law enforcement to investigate what you are alleging is a crime? you know, dana, if i was giving a speech to 45,000 people and someone in the back of the room threw a pie or yelled out an insult, would i spend the next two hours responding to that? no. reporter: the woman who received the picture has denied an inappropriate relationship saying, i have never met congressman weiner, though i am a fan. i have never been to new york or to d.c. there have never been inappropriate exchanges between anthony weiner and myself. reporters wanted to know why the congressman was following a college student on his twitter account to begin with. did you follow her, how did you find her? what was the reason? i have said this a couple of ways and i will say it again. i am not going to permit myself to be distracted by this issue any longer. reporter: the questions clearly irritated him. there are rules here. i would love an answer. that s rude. you do the questions, i do the answers and this jackass interrupts me. how s that for a rule of the game? i can tell you what it was. we heard this pope has a love for cats. so what was in the box was a beautiful crystal cat that, who knows, could be on his table. he seemed to accept it and like it. we wanted to offer a gift to show our appreciation for the time and attention he showed us. thank you, guys. good for you guys. now on a different note, here at home the murder trial of casey anthony enters its seventh day. this after an explosive day of testimony from anthony s mother. kerry sanders is in orlando with the latest. good morning to you. reporter: good morning, meredith. for ten minutes and seven seconds jurors listened to three gut wrenching, riveting 911 calls. all the calls made on july 15, 2008 by cindy anthony. the calls may be among the most powerful evidence that the prosecution has to prove its allegation that casey murdered her own daughter. my grand daughter has been taken. she s been missing for a month. reporter: cindy anthony listened to her own haunting words. the 911 recording made the day she said she first learneded her granddaughter had been missing 31 days. we re talking about a 3-year-old little girl. hope spring, orlando. my daughter finally admitted that the babysitter stole her. i need to find her. your daughter admitted the baby is where? the babysitter took her. my daughter s been looking for her. i told you my daughter was missing for a month. i just found her today but i can t find my granddaughter. she admitted she s been trying to find her herself. there s something wrong. i found my daughter s car today and it smells like there s been a dead body in the damn car. what s your granddaughter s name? caylee anthony. reporter: cindy anthony has long maintained her daughter was innocent listened as every word spilled from the recording. how long has she been missing for? i haven t seen her since the 7th of june. reporter: casey cried. cindy told the operator casey spent the last month looking for caylee on her own. she had not called police or anyone else. caylee is missing. reporter: casey s father george was in the room. the defense claims he already knew caylee was dead, a drowning victim in the family pool, a claim he denies. cindy said casey claims a nanny named zanny had taken caylee. casey said zanny took her a month ago. she was missing for a month. i understand. can you calm down for a minute. i need to know what s going on. is your daughter there? i m on the phone with them. the s your daughter there? yes. reporter: cindy handed the phone to her daughter casey. hello? hello. yes. hi. can you tell me what s going on a little bit? i m sorry? can you tell me what s going on? my daughter s been missing for the last 31 days. you know who has her? i know who has her. i tried to contact her. i received a phone call today from a number that is no longer in service. i did get to speak to my daughter for about a moment, about a minute. reporter: after prosecutors played all three 911 calls, cindy raised her read and asked for a break. can i have a break, sir? reporter: cindy left the courtroom supported by her attorney. casey never once glanced at her mother. when cindy returned casey? mom. hey, sweetie. reporter: prosecutors played casey s first phone call from jail. it, too, was recorded. you don t know what my involvement is and stuff? casey mom. what? no. no, i don t know what your involvement is, sweetheart. you re not telling me where she s at. because i don t [ bleep ] know where she s at. are you kidding me? reporter: the jury is sat transfixed looking at monitors, writing the words typed along as audio played. some of them winced. not one lookeded across the courtroom at casey seated at the defense table. the defense replayed portions of the 911 call to demonstrate that george anthony s voice was never heard. of course their allegation or defense here is that george anthony was part of a cover-up. meredith? kerry sanders, thank you very much. linda boddin worked on casey s defense team for almost two years. she s here along with savannah guthrie, today s legal correspondent. it was an emotional day in court. in terms of swaying the jury, how important are the 911 calls to the prosecution and the defense? for yesterday when you re the defense you suck it in, suck it up and say, oh, my god. however, when the jury starts to listen they will say, how did this advance the case? did it tell us whether there was an intentional homicide or was it an accident? as a matter of fact, if you look at cindy anthony s reaction to possibly leaving the pool ladder and it not being up or down or wherever it was, one can argue maybe she s having that reaction from guilt. maybe she understands what s going on and it s what the defense contends or maybe she s grief-stricken. if you look at the reactions of the women to 911 tapes, cindy seems so distraught listening to them. casey, far less emotional, to say the least. i thought it was interesting. kerry said the jurors never looked at casey which was interesting to me. the difference in their demeanor, how might it affect the jurors? the jurors weren t looking at the witnesses in court. the difference in demeanor is powerful. the demeanor on the tape. you hear cindy anthony in a panic. she s distraught. casey anthony gets on the phone and it s totally flat. she s not charged with failure to show emotion, but this is a piece of the puzzle. the other substantive thing that comes out of the calls is cindy anthony on tape saying it smells like a dead body in that car corroborating the testimony of two witnesses who have testified saying the smell of human decomposition was distinct and unmistakable. how does the defense explain that? they go back to cindy saying she was making it up and she relied on what george said. if the contention is correct that george also knew the child was dead he would be saying that to cindy for a reason. the defense is looking for the lack of evidence. talk about casey s demeanor. they are looking at the he didn t act right evidence dealing with the grandfather. this is the first time the jurors heard casey talking. she said, nobody is on my side. all they care about is finding caylee. then she said, that s all i m interested in, too. but it s the she didn t act right evidence that s the problem in the case. it doesn t tell you whether the child died intentionally or accidentally. what can we expect in the coming days? [ male announcer ] get the venture card from capital one, money magazine s best rewards card if you aim to rack up airline miles. what s in your wallet? so, you re a democrat right? new newtons fruit thins. real blueberries and blueberry brown sugar. crispy whole grain. newtons fruit thins, one unique cookie. back now at 7:45. do cell phones cause cancer? that question has been asked for decades now, and the latest answer from the world health organization is, quote, possibly. dr. nancy snyderman is nbc s chief medical editor. hi, ann. possibly. what does the world health organization mean by that? they put a stamp on let s get more evidence. 31 doctors from 14 countries said, we have looked at everything and there is no study that shows a link between cell phones and the brain tumors that kill. there was a study where they took people with brain tumors and said, okay, tell us how much you used your cell phone. not a great study. everybody recognizes the flaws, but it s the one thing people go, oh, well, maybe, possibly, perhaps. all these terms have been thrown out. the looming question is conventional wisdom would say, if you put a trans mitter next to hur heayour head, can it hur. some people say, well, it can t be good for you so it must be bad. there is no evidence that cell phones cause cancer. so they said, okay, let s kick the can forward, gather data and put it to rest. however the cell phone industry group called ctia issued a statement saying, quote, this classification does not mean cell phones cause cancer and noted that the same score has been given to pickled vegetables and coffee. the category where they put cell phones has talcum powder, pickled vegetables. so i think it s prudent to recognize that 5 billion people use cell phones. we have seen a huge explosion in the technology but no increase in the tumors. there is no correlation yet. the counter argument will be, maybe we have to wait 20, 30 years. well, perhaps. i want to underscore again there is no cause and effect. i have heard a lot of media organizations over the last 24 hours say there is a new study out. this is almost a call to action to keep gathering data. it s a review of studies, not new research. meantime, there s been a scientific consensus that children s brains are more susceptible to radiation because, as their skulls are thinner, nervous systems are still developing, what should what s the takeaway? should we limit use? what s your bottom line? kids brains, bodies, every part of them grows fast. that s why we are always more worried about their environmental links to anything. just because they are using cell phones which is a microwave technology doesn t mean they are more at risk. we ll have to follow them further out. but for people, if you are scared, and there is no cause and effect yet, but if you re scared get it away from your head. but frankly, more people die using cell phones while texting and talking while driving than anything else right now. that s the take-home, i think that supercedes everything else. all right. thank you so much. dr. nancy snyderman. still ahead this morning the hidden fees you could be hit with when you try to cash in your airline reward points. first, these messages. the official verdict is in but it s controversial. the defendant is guilty of the crime of murder in the first-degree. reporter: from the verdict it was clear the jury didn t buy jerome s claim he acted solely in self-defense and recommended a harsh set. punishment is imprisonment for life. reporter: the pharmacist was found guilty of murdering 16-year-old antoine parker during a botcheded robbery in 2009. the incident caught on security cameras. authorities say the video shows 16-year-old parker and a 14-year-old accomplice entering the drugstore wearing masks. the 14 yeerl points a gun at two female employees who run to the back of the store. prosecutors say the pharmacist then fires his own weapon, shooting parker in the head. the other teen with the gun flees the store and the pharmacist chases him outside. when he returns, he walks over parker who was unconscious on the floor, goes to the back of the pharmacy to get a second gun then returns to fire five more shots into parker s body out of camera view. the prosecution called it an execution. but at trial the pharmacist s lawyer claimed parker was moving on the floor and was still a threat. defendant, please rise. reporter: when the guilty verdict was read, it brought hugs and cheers from parker s family. the defendant s reporters were angry. websites expressed outrage at the verdict. outside the drugstore, supporters are signing petitions, condemning the verdict. supporters say they will ask parole officers and the governor to pardonen him or commute the sentence which will be reviewed by a judge. the f.a.a. announced a crackdown including fines up to $11,000 against people who aim laser pointers at the cockpits of airplanes which can temporarily blind pilots who reported more than 2,800 such incidents last year. a flight of fancy is closer to reality after this successful weekend test of the world s highest flying jet pack. it carries a life-sized dummy on a ten-minute ride over new zealand before using an emergency parachute to land. the maker says his $100,000 invention can be used by the military, search teams and wealthy dare devils. it s 8:05 now. back outside to maria larosa in for al with a check of the weather. good morning. back outside for a check of the weather. good morning, natalie. we have a lot of grads here. it s a summer crowd, right? those days are gone. reporter: here at chicago s fun club the kids are engaged in good old-fashioned play, but it won t happen unless you find the right program and register early. what do you think you should be looking for as a parent in an activity? mr. meg meager is the author of ten habits of happy mothers. good morning to you. good morning. a lot of moms and dads really dread the summer. yes, they do. i think as moms we tend to overworry about kids anyway. we want to make sure summer is fun and they do great things. we put too much pressure on ourselves. how do we leaalleviate that? there is pressure that extends into summer. one way is to balance expectations which means yours and those of youren to them, cr dialogue and figure out a plan you can adhere to. the plan varies around the age of the child. you say, embrace boredom. i think our kids we are used to overscheduling kids. it s rooted in the sense that i need to make sure my kids are happy all the time. i think it s healthy for kids to learn how to deal with boredom. the truth is you grow up, get out in life and half the time you re bored. we need to learn what to do with boredom. summer is a great time to learn it. use that time for creativity. i advocate tech-free tuesday where you turn off anything with a switch so your kids have time to talk to you, play hopscotch. there are the various programs and camps but a lot of people can t afford that stuff. right. if you can t, there are a lot of y camps around, but try to co-op with girlfriends. if you work part-time and another girlfriend works part-time, come up with a system to help each other out. there are many creative things you can do to get around it. you have to look hard and wide sometimes to find affordable places for kids. usually you can do it and i will tell you, even if it means sacrificing a bit and spending more money, what you often have to do, some of my patients have to do it s worth it to get kids in a safe environment where they are having fun. something that s free is reading. when kids read ten books a summer ten? janet. let them pick it out. when they go back to kids, especially kids from lower socio-economic groups they go back prepared and ready. that s a free fun event. i m dealing with the other age group. i have two in college, one about to go to college. they come home and they re used to living their own life. it s hard to reimpose structure when you have kids that age, teenagers and beyond. you still have to. it s still your home. we are dealing with it, too. adult kids who come back and kind of wonder when dinner is. i said to the kids, this is still our home. i want you to know that i don t sleep until you are in your bed. if you want to be kind to your mother, be sure you are in bed before you re 1:00 or 2:00 because i need sleep. and it doesn t mean rules have to go away. teens especially the 12, 14, 15-year-olds need to know you are still reinforcing rules. it is an opportunity to talk about what they can do with free time and let them know you will always be watching them. it s not just about the kids summer vacation. parents need the vacation as well. what does summer mean to them? [ female announcer ] nutri-grain one good decision. can lead to another. with real fruit, more of the whole grains your body needs, and a good source of fiber. nutri-grain can help you eat better all day. this morning on today s travel the secret cost of cashing in airline award miles. many want you to pay taxes and fee. now some are tacking on fuel surcharges as well. good morning. good morning. we didn t coordinate our outfits today, but it looks like we did. fuel surcharges. this is new. this is something we are seeing a lot more of, especially when traveling internationally. so basically the airlines are getting really a difficult time paying their fuel bills and they are passing it on. what s amazing about surcharges is a recent report forecasts that in 2011 the airlines could make $22.6 billion on surcharges. that s up $10 billion from two years ago. that means surcharges are big business for airlines. we re thinking they are adding the surcharge because fuel prices are up. you re saying they are making money on these fuel surcharges. they are in the business of making money. british airways or air canada or luftshansa, when you book on the site you see the original base fair and the surcharge amounts. we re going for that example because that would make it more simple to understand. you tried booking a flight on british airways online and the flight was $523. then there were fees on top of that that doubled the fair. they did. the government charges and taxes that there is nothing the airline can do about. but the fuel and insurance is $362. the reason it s broken out is that i think, and this is my theory, that the airline feels there is a sticker shock aspect to putting a huge number in front of you. the european airlines and international airlines decided this is their tact. they have higher fuel costs. we see it at the pump. they are looking for goodwill saying if you see it at the pump, we re seeing it, too. spring for it. you re talking about international airlines. let s talk about domestic airlines. you talked about booking a flight from new york city to los angeles. tell us what happened here. you don t see the breakdown. the fuel surcharge is built in, but you are not seeing it. you will see $21.40 in taxes and fees. the main reason we did this exercise is for you to see how to use frequent flyer miles. people think frequent flying miles means a free ticket. if you fly on one of these international carriers you are getting the ticket portion free, but not getting the surcharges covered. you will use your miles but will pay extra money. what s your advice? [ male announcer ] the new citi thankyou premier card gives you more ways to earn points. what s your story? citi can help you write it. back now at 8:37 with an update on a story that touched so many. nearly two months ago a mother drove her family s mini van into the hudson killing herself and three of her children. the oldest, a 10-year-old boy, survived. mara schiavocampo has more on how he s doing. good morning. good morning. this story touched viewers deeply with so many wanting to know how to help the young boy who went through a terrible trauma. people reached out to him from all over the world including a group of professional athletes who are building a team of support around lashawn. from the outside, lashawn armstrong looks like any other kid. but inside, he s coping with a tragedy no 10-year-old should ever face. this child s play, a welcome distraction from an unimaginable trauma. we are going to begin with a tragic story in new york. reporter: seven weeks ago, lashawn s mother, 25-year-old la shonda armstrong loaded he and his siblings into the family mini van, allegedly distraught after an argument with the father of three of the kids she drove into the dark, frigid waters of the hudson river. as the van began to sink, lashawn lowered a window and swam to shore. he kept repeating, help my mom, she s in the water. reporter: by the time rescuers found the family, it was too late. the van was submerged in eight feet of water. the bodies of the mother, 5-year-old landon, 2-year-old lance and 11-month-old lianna all inside. lashawn s story of survival touched so many, including baltimore ravens linebacker ray lewis. many stories you hear day in, day out. but that one grabbed me. he grabbed me from afar. first words out of my mouth were, i need him. think about how hard this is. reporter: lewis tracked the family down, offering lashawn mentorship and emotional support. i just grabbed him, hugged him. i looked at him and i told him, i m here for you, man. i can t replace what you ve lost. but i can tell you that i m here to go forward with you. reporter: the two formed a strong instant bond. when i first met ray lewis i was, like, shocked. it was so cool. he s like a brother to me. like an older brother to me. he says that he misses me and i m like family to him. reporter: lashawn s new extended family is much bigger than lewis. other current and retired nfl players are huddling around him. we made him a part of our family. we told him, we ve got him for life. reporter: they are also offering financial support for counseling, tutoring and a college fund. holding a black tie fund-raiser this april and asking for continued donations. lashawn still struggles with his new reality. his grandparents, who share custody, say he was a doting big brother who deeply misses his family and has never spoken of that night. a couple times i catch him in moments but he gets out of it. he just says, god, thank you for looking out for my family in heaven. reporter: lashawn is not going through it alone. he has a large and loving family. and now a team of big brothers. what do you hope for his future? to achieve much more than what his situation offered. reporter: as far as lashawn is concerned, his options are wide open. i don t know what i want to be when i grow up. there is a lot to do. i m not sure yet. first i have to finish college though. reporter: one child emerging from a painfully dark time, looking ahead to a brighter future. the ray lewis foundation is accepting donations specifically for lashawn s education activities and counseling. lewis said he s personally donated $10,000. we have the information at today.com. such a special little boy. a really good kid. we hope the best for him. you often hear about athletes who do bad things. here is an athlete stepping up in a wonderful way for a child. just saw the need. and filled it. thank you so much. up next, what you are doing wrong when it comes to home security. first, this is today on nbc. or a sign out front? signs work great. if you have the alarm, actually use it. so many people never turn them on. criminals are aware of that. they bust in. if the alarm goes off, they leave. if it doesn t they have the house. and a no-brainer, but we all do it. not locking the door, especially garage doors. garage doors are a problem. nobody locks them. they assume it s part of the inside of the house. but criminals break into cars, steal the clicker, go to the house because they have the registration with your home address on it. now they have the clicker to get into your garage. go back and double back to make sure especially patio doors. people forget the sliding back door sometimes. patio doors are really easy to open. now they have a stick you can put down. good idea. something to secure the door. we were talking about people breaking into cars but beyond stealing the radio it s information that could be in the glove compartment that could lead to something worse happening. that goes to the registration. you have registration in there with your home address on it. scribble that out. you don t need it. the police can still use the registration fine. we won t get in trouble? and it keeps you secure. moving on to computers. we have been talking about cyber security with congresswoman anthoan though congressman anthony weiner, for example. people are concerned about a tough pass word. they have one tough one and use it everywhere. that s because you keep forgetting them. i can t remember which is for the bank account, which one to log on at work. come up with something easy like a word ribbon. then at the end of the word tack on two weird characters like a one and a capitol a. it s easy enough to remember because it s only a little bit different but they won t realize your system. just a word and tack on a one and a z. exactly. it s that simple. should you change your pass word often? as often as you can. most people won t do it. best practice is once every six months. again, most people aren t going to do it. let s talk about purchasing online. a lot of people love to shop online. how do you make sure everything you put in is secure? that would be a powerful next chapter for playing for change. reporter: so the playing for change band was formed with grandpa elliot and musicians like ghana s mohamed whose talking drum talks to millions. it makes me so proud. reporter: the band now plays to sellout crowds around the world. for grandpa elliot it s a long way from the corner of toulouse and royal where he s been performing for years. an idea that sometimes leaves him speechless. i m an old man. i always wanted to travel. and now i m traveling. so how do you think i feel? well, our situation is we have about $35,000 worth of credit card and personal loan debt. five accounts are open and revolving. six are closed or insolvent accounts. we just completed an irs audit for about three years for which we are going to owe about $14,000. i have $3,000 to apply to debt and i want to know the best place to apply it. should i put it to the irs? should i put it toward one of the loan accounts that the balance is about $3,000 and wipe out a monthly payment or should i maybe apply it to estimated tax payments for 2011? good question. jean? really good. so many moving pieces. you re on an installment plan with the irs for next year s debt, right? for last year s debt? it will be, yeah. part of the deal with an installment plan is you have to pay next year s taxes. so take the $3,000, put as much of it as necessary toward paying the estimated taxes. anything left over you can put toward the highest interest rate credit card debt. but make sure you stay on time on those installment payments. okay. taxes are most important. pay down that debt. next we have a viewer e-mail from dan in new jersey. he writes, can a 403-b tsa or ira be converted to a roth ira? david? the simple answer sit can be. the easiest way to do this is to do what s called a rollover. he d roll over money from the 403-b which is like a 401-k plan. then you roll it into the ira account. once you have rolled it into the account then you can make the decision. do you want to roll it into a roth ira? this year if you do he needs to pay taxes on it. it s important to ask yourself, where do i get the money to pay the taxes? are you going to take it from the ira account itself or outside the account? do some calculations on google, put in roth ira calculations. take the money out of your ira to pay the taxes, for most people roth ira conversions don t make sense. what s the harm of keeping it in the 403-b? if a person has left a job they should move it. do an ira rollover so they don t pay taxes on it. then the money is in their account, in their name and they control it. more flexibility. we have a video question from a viewer. anna from washington, d.c. i applied for a program to go to south america to volunteer and get my tsl certification. i want to see if it will affect my credit. thank you. i think i skipped one there. we ll go ahead to jean. it s hard to hear. it was a little hard to hear. here s the deal. when you have private student loans and federal student loans and you re not earning additional money, you can put the plans on deferment or forbearance if the lender allows it. you have to check with the lender and make sure you can defer. deferring is better than going into forbearance because then you are not paying on the loans and you are accruing more interest. people come out of school and have a student loan payment that s one size and it gets much bigger. the answer is, call your lender, see if you can defer. and sallie may will work with her. we have kaya from portland. i had to suspend my credit card last year because of a high balance and high interest rate. but i have paid it off finally yay! good for you. is it best to keep open that card or close it because i know that a card in good standing is best to keep open, but what if it was suspended? she wants to keep the card open. she wants to keep as many accounts open as possible. we have talked about it on the show many times. that credit utilization ratio is key with all of the cards, not just the one she s thinking about now. it s great that she paid off the balance, but she may want to charge a little bit now and then and make sure you use only 10% or less of what the credit limit is on the card. that can help you improve your score. paying bills on time, paying the balance in full when it s due. those are key things to help improve her score over time. the fact that she suspended it because she didn t like the high interest rate means it s probably time to see if she can negotiate for a lower rate or look for a lower rate card if she wants to use it. we have time for one more. we have a viewer on the phone. pam from louisiana. good morning, pam. what s your question? good morning. we ll be retiring in april and have been told by our financial adviser to take out a mortgage on our retirement home instead of paying cashing out most of our money to pay in cash. we would have to pay taxes on the money taken out. we will make a higher percentage from the money left in ira investments than the percentage we have to pay on throe loan. some of the money is in an annuity that will pay 70% of the monthly house payment. does this sound okay to you? [ carol ] this could turn me into a history buff. to the question do cell phones cause cancer, it s been asked for decades now. the latest answer from the world health organization is possibly. what does that mean? dr. nancy snyderman is nbc s chief medical editor. hi, tamron. we hear this thing, this conversation comes up a lot. now you have interesting wording from the world health organization. they are saying now possibly. why now? any time you hear possibly, perhaps, maybe, you cannot then in the same sentence put conclusion. they have after convening 35 scientists from 14 countries who looked at all the information they said, you know, there is no known cause/effect. we cannot prove that cell phones cause cancer, but let s kick the can forward. there is enough concern. let s follow this proactively. i think the real issue here is there was one study in patients with brain tumors. they said people were dying. how much do you use your cell phones and people had to think about how much they use them. very, very poor study. based on that and i think frankly conventional wisdom that something s wrong they have kicked the can forward. the panel distinguishes between known and possible carcinogens. known carcinogens asbestos, cigarette smoking. we know they cause cancer. possible are kas legasoline fum chloroform, working as a carpenter, firefighter or dry cleaner. also pickled vegetables. even going in the sunshine every day is a carcinogen. we know that 5 billion people in this world use cell phones. cell phone technology has skyrocketed. but we have not seen a budge in the number of brain tumors. so until we see a number go up and the other number follow, i don t see how you can use the word conclusion anywhere. the cell phone industry said, this classification does not mean cell phones cause cancer. it is in their interest to stress that. they are right. there is no known proof yet. people wonder, do i get rid of the phone? the reality is more people will die by driving, texting and talking than by tumors. if you are really concerned, there is no proof, but if you are concerned follow this list. use a hands-free device. keep it away from your head. tell your children to use it less often. but that list is for the worried well. i have no science to substantiate that. we are giving you something if you re worried. i m not going to worry until i see the science. some people feel better knowing there is something they can do. it wasn t that long ago that nobody wanted a microwave oven in the kitchen and now you wouldn t buy a kitchen without one. i couldn t live without it. coming up, bridal beauty. bobbi brown is here with advice for wedding day makeup. first, these messages. my contacts are so annoying. they re itchy, dry and uncomfortable. i can t wait to take em out, throw em away and never see them again. i stew and listen to music because they have a right to recline but i think it s not poli polite. sometimes i get a little passive aggressive and i open and close my tray table multiple times to be annoying. there is nowhere for my knees to go because he is in my lap. just pull your legs up and flip them over the front and they could be a pillow for you. he would love it. it can be annoying with the reclining. i know people do what they do. they go back and the way that the seats are, they are so tight there is not really a lot of room. i am not jealous of anything or anybody but i have an envy thing about people who can get on a plane and fall asleep no matter what. the worst turbulence, a brawl. there were people who slept through the whole thing. and they will live forever. how do you do that? you are not sleeping at all. not anywhere. i am trying not to complain. i was going on about 22 hours of no sleep yesterday. and we finally get out of this signing and everybody has been sweet and wonderful. i get in the car and i am saying i am going get home in time to see the puppies and frank. the guy, i will never say his name, he said i m going to stop you know what he said? he said i m going to stop for gas and beer. i said that s a joke, right? joking about the beer? no. 15 minutes late. he was going to get beer until i went you re joking, right? and then he got lost and we got home and not even the puppies were asleep. curled up next to frank? i wasn t going to tell that part. he gets congested. so i didn t sleep last night either. i m dangerous when i haven t slept. june is courtesy month for driving. if you are in the fast lane and the person going in front of you is going 50 miles an hour. you flash them. i do ride a little tight. not too tight. sometimes they don t know you are back there. they have a rear view. they will drive forever, look and go oh and then they go over. without putting on their signal. they are asking you to be courteous. if you are going slow in the fast lane, get over. or if you are behind the person going behind the slow person, be courteous so many accidents are caused this way. sometimes you have to go around them and it s a pain because they are just puttering along. i don t think this month is going to work out well. here are the things that bug you guys the most. slow pokes in the fast lane are number five. four are people with no turn signals. three, grooming while driving. you know exactly who you are. that nose clipper thing is good. when you clipped your noser i did not. apparently it was in allure magazine. is it okay to do that. only on national television when you are trying to show somebody how it works. road rage is the second most annoying thing and tailgaters. yeah. you know what bothers me the most? is when i see people on the phone or texting. that bothers me the most because it is dangerous. and they just came out with a new study that said there may be a link between cell phones and cancer. and nancy schneiderman said what s more tragic and draangers is talking and texting while driving. deaf definitely so. employees around here donated shoes to 125 countries around the world. and she decided to call elton john and justin timberlake and kardashians and other celebrities and asked us to donate shoes and sign them for an auction. those are kim kardashians you are looking at. yes. i can t read the other. these are sarah jessica s. justin timberlakes. hoda doesn t want to talk about this. how do we describe this?
