night here. and we re heading in to the unofficial end of summer. looks like mother nature will have an impact all across the country. parts of new jersey remain under water. and much of the east still reeling from the aftermath of irene. now there is hurricane katia to keep an eye on as she gains strength on her trek across the atlantic. an take a look in texas where firefighters there are racing to get control of a wildfire threatening hundreds of homes, just one of the fires burning in the drought stricken region. we re live are wiwith the lates. also in washington, the fight over the issue of jobs. are the parties can t even agree on when president obama should deliver his plan. and we ll talk to squon huntsman about what he would do to jump-start the economy. plus mel gibson areas in court as a settlement is reached in his long running and bitter custody dispute with his ex-girl trend. but let s begin with the wild weather all across the country and the potential threat from now hurricane katia. al is rackitracking it for us p another disturbance will haven impact even seener. katia is a category 1 storm with 75-mile-an-hour winds. moving west at about 20 miles an hour. here is what we see as the track. we expect to get caught up in a trough as it approaches the united states. we think it will go between san juan and bermuda. 120-mile-an-hour winds by it tuesday morning, get caught up in the trough and move to the north and not affect us. that s what we re hoping. but we ve also got a developing area in the eastern gulf, this could become a tropical depression next few days and then spread anywhere between texas and florida spreading rain. right now, it looks like we re thinking the heaviest rain is going to be between louisiana and on in to the panhandle of florida with upwards of 3 to 5 inches of rain. could be more depending on the track of the system. the models diverge wildly. but we ll keep an eye on both of them for you. and wildfires are the big concern this morning. dozens of homes have already been destroyed in oklahoma and texas as crews race to get the flames under control. charles hadlock is in oak that city with the latest. reporter: the third day in a row, people in oklahoma and texas are wake up to the threat of more wildfires. here in oklahoma, about 50 homes have been destroyed by a fire that started on tuesday. overnight, 380 residents were evacuated as the wildfire danger continues. as the sunset over oklahoma city wednesday, firefighters and their battle against the blaze was just heating up again. at first, they had a handle on thes massive wildfire that started tuesday and forced hundreds to flee and shut down highways. but by the afternoon, high winds spoiled those efforts causing the fire to reignite. definitely the worst we ve each. reporter: as helicopters dumped buckets of water, firefighters struggled in the intense heat. families left homeless began sorting through the ashes. this would be the master bedroom. reporter: darren and karen grant scrambled to flee their home with the six kids. it just hit me yesterday as we were throwing things in the car. we ve got about ten minutes, what do i grab. and the first thought was make sure the kids are safe and that they have clothing. reporter: but like so many other families struggling to pick up the pieces, they re reminded of what really mattered. it was just that it doesn t matter for my eternity and i still have my huh a and six kids. reporter: farther south in texas, a wildfire 100 miles west of ft. worth is still burning. these are live pictures from kxas of a fire in palo pinto county. this fire has been burning since tuesday, has destroyed more than 3 dozen homes and 6,000 acres. this entire region has been suffering through one of the worst droughts in a generation and now one of the worst fire seasons. all right, charles hadlock in oklahoma city this morning, thank you. it s 7:05 and here s natalie. from fires to the floods here in the northeast in the wake of irene, progress is coming slowly for thousands who are in water willinged homes or remain stranded. today amy robach is again in killington, vermont. good morning. reporter: natalie, good morning to you. and at first glance, the scene around me is a familiar one, one of destruction and construction. but as you start to seat bigger picture, you ll notice this for sale sign. and it s almost hard to believe that standing right over there was once a 100-year-old historic home that was swept away in the raging floodwaters from tropical storm irene. there is nothing left to show for it, not even a foundation. just a river bed and a stream and unfortunately, the destruction here stretches on for miles. with damage estimates as high as $20 billion, hurricane irene is now one of the top ten natural disasters in u.s. his other. we have no flood insurance, so there is no insurance. it s total loss. reporter: the destruction is widespread, the cleanup seemingly endless. vermonters stranded for days received water, food and medical supplies from the national guard. community centers and neighbors start making up for what s been lost. you could hear the rocks and big boulders rolling through it. reporter: gary almost lost his house when the road beside it turned into a river. the community response is amazing. everybody got together. reporter: less than 72 hours later, major progress has been made. on tuesday night, thunlg s passaic river finally started on go down. still hundreds conditions go home. i want to cry, but i can t cry. i got to be strong for my kids. reporter: fire departments are patrolling by boat, entire communities still under water. beneath the enormous blanket of irene s rainfall, 140,000 acres of farmland have been damaged. major highways washed away like sand castles. but from north carolina to killington, vermont, east coasters are rebuilding around the clock. power is coming back on. oun s towns are cleaning up, and cars are getting through. out on patrol, this officer got trapped by rising waters. could you have ever imagined seeing what you saw? no. never seen floods like that since i ve been alive. reporter: now he s back at work. how quickly will killington get back on its feet? we re back on our feet now. reporter: back on their feet on a long road to recovery. and speaking of a listening road to recovery, we have a live look over patterson, new jersey right now. and what a scene still taking place there right now. what were once streets and homes now pretty much just look like a lake at this hour. it will take weeks before they finally see the waters recede. back in killington, the waters have receded enough and authorities have had enough time to rebuild parts of these roads. this is one of the three main arteries that lead out of here. they re able to open one hour for the people wanting to come back up the mountain and one hour to get back down the mountain, so things are slowly starting to back back to normal here. parts of new jersey, connecticut, not so fortunate. still a lot of power youtsages, as well. amy robach, thanks so much. it is 7:09. once again, here is savannah. a storm s been withdrewing in washington, as well. on wednesday, president obama and house speaker john boehner waged a day long battle over the date that the president would deliver a key economic address to congress. chuck todd is nbc s chief white house correspondent. good morning it to you. reporter: good morning, savannah. here we go again. look, late last night, the white house and john boehner finally came to an agreement of when the president could he speak. instead of wednesday next week, he ll speak thursday. but it was an amazing 12 hour debate as the president and speaker boehner picked up where they left off. they couldn t agree on a date that the president could present his jobs plan to congress. it s time to stop the political gamesmanship. reporter: that was president obama on wednesday trying to keep pressure on congress to pass its jobs agenda. but at virtually the same time inside the west wing, top aides were beginning to play out a drama this would take us right back to the political gamesmanship of earlier this summer. here s what happened. last month on his bus tour through the midwest, the president promised to present his jobs plan to congress after labor day. a very specific plan that boosts the economy, to create jobs and to control our deficit. reporter: white house aides had decided weeks ago that the best forum would be a joint session of congress. just after the president spoke wednesday morning, he sent a letter to he speaker john boehner and harry reid respectfully requesting the opportunity to address a joint session of congress next wednesday in prime time at 8:00 p.m. but there was already an issue. that would coincide with the nbc news politico republican presidential debate at the reagan library in california. there were a lot of conversations. reporter: jay carney denied that 2012 presidential politics had anything to do with the timing. once you decide you want to do a speech to congress and you have to deal with congressional schedules and other there are many other factors here. reporter: and while the white house out they had speaker boehner s agreement on the date and time, it turns out they were wrong. aides to boehner were not happy with how little notice the white house gave the speaker. hours later, he sent this letter back it to the president suggesting the address be held on the following evening when the speaker claimed there would be fewer parliamentary or logistical impediments that might detract from your remarks. before boehner s letter, mitt romney who had planned to one up the president by unveiling his jobs plan next tuesday indicated he d look forward to the unique split screen opportunity saying in a statement, tv viewers will have a choice between republican candidates talking about the future of america or barack obama taking about the future of his presidency. today i d like to outline my plan to put america back to work. reporter: another republican hopeful, jon huntsman, who has struggled to gain traction, released his jobs plan wednesday. it calls for expanding free trade, slashing government regul regulations, simplifying the tax code, and also getting rid of popular tax deductions including the one for home mortgages. timing is everything in poll techs and one reason request the white house wanted to speak next wednesday and not next thursday is because they didn t want to get into conflict with another big event next thursday and that s the opening knit night of the nfl. so as of right now, the white house hasn t said what time they ll give their speech, but i m told they will avoid kickoff, so we re probably looking at 7:30 p.m., not like 8:00. but unbelievable. all right, chuck. got to work it around the football schedule. okay. thank you. and jon huntsman joins us. good morning to you. hi, good to be with you. let s briefly talk about this scheduling occur fufl. where do you come down on this is this do you think speaker bay per should have accommodated the president of the united states or do you think the president blew it by not agreeing on the date behind the scenes before announcing it publicly? i think it is such nonsense. this is what people hate about politics. we re spending all this time about the draw that of the venue, about about the substance of what s going to get this cup back to work again. i think that venues are venues and the president needs to find one where he can articulate his vision, but for 2 and a half year, it hasn t worked. the economy has sauled, we don t have enough jobs. we need to get on with the big picture that will get the country back to work again. let s talk about your jobs plan. you unveiled it yesterday. and essentially your strategy if creating jobs is to cut taxes, cut corporate taxes significantly and hope companies will hire. my question to you is, at this very moment, corporations are sitting on trillions of cash on their balance sheets and they re still not hiring. why will your plan work? my plan is to do what i ve done as governor of a state that worked. i ve been there and i ve done that. i ve been through tax reform before. and i ve seen it improve the economic conditions. people the reason we have a broken tax code in part is because it s full of loopholes and deductions and corporate welfare. it s perpetuated by the people who can afford the lawyers and lobby i. it is keep it going. this order to be competitive to the rest of the 21st century, in order to compete with china and i said i can t, in order to get the jobs this country so desperately need, we ve got to clean out the code, we have to wipe it clean, we have to lower the rate, we have to broaden the base both on the individual income side and on the corporate side. there aren t a lot of corporations paying the 35% rate, so let s get real about that, clean out the corporate welfare and leave the tax code a lot more competitive. governor, let me ask you, you have one entry on your resume that certainly additions you from every other republican in this race, that is you worked for the obama admin strarks you were president obama s ambassador to china. you now have criticized him on health care, on wall street reform, you say he s been an utter failure on the economy. what does it say about you and your judgment that you worked for someone who you think has been a complete failure? i worked for president reagan, president bush,rd bush. i believe if you love your country, you serve her. i stood up and everybodied is my country when my president asked and i would do it again. that s a philosophy i take to my grave. but when you stand up and you embrace a bipartisan position like u.s. ambassador to china, it doesn t mean you resign your world view, it didn t mean you resign your party of a fill jagts. the problems need to be debated. but at one point you called president obama a remarkable lead leader. at what point did you sour on president obama and how long did you continue to work for him after that point? reporter: listen, at the very beginning, there was a lot of hope and optimism when this country began coming together after the 2008 election. i was raised to an gracious person. i thought it was remarkable that he appointed a republican to his administration. i wrote him a handwritten note. that s what lot of people do. but the president has had 2 1/2 years and it s very clear to everybody that he has not been able to deliver on the one thing that the american people expect. and that s expand and broaden and strength then the economy and create jobs. that s the most important thing to people in this country right now and we ve got to have a debate, we ve got it talk aboto the big picture issues that will get us back in the game again. currently you re not running against president obama, you re running against a handful of other republican candidates. you said the republican field has zero substance, in good ideas, you disagreed with your fellow republicans about issues like raising the debt ceiling, about evolution, about climate change. and here s the verdict so far from republican voters the most recent pl from quinnipiac has you dead last. it sounds fun any to put it this way, but i guess the question is are you sure you should be running in the republican primary of 2011? i m absolutely certain. if we were to take the numbers from 2008 and 2004 and extrapolate those to the finish line, we would have had much different outcomes. nobody is paying attention to the race. a few insiders are, but this race has a long way to go during the fall season. in the months ahead, i believe this country is going to turn into common sense, problem solving, reasoning that comes from people who have been governor, someone who has been in the rift sector, someone who has lived overseas four time, been an ambassador three times for his country. this cup is crying out for real solutions and we re not getting them. we re getting drama, but we re not getting solutions. do you think that governor perry or michele bachmann are too far right to win and beat president obama? all i can tell is you that the people of will country want common sense problem solving solutions. they don t want politics at the extreme ends and we ll talk to him and his little girl exclusively this morning. a tough story. i think every parent can feel a little bit what he went through. but let s begin now with that chilling story of survival. a colorado than forced to cut off his own toes when his foot became trapped beneath a truck trailer. migu miguel almaguer has the story. and it s disturbing. reporter: it certainly is. john hunt was all along gathering wood when all of a sudden he would be con fronted with an unthinkable choice. my foot was right there. reporter: john hutt was standing on top of his truck unloading his rear trailer when it happened. scl. and it crushed right down on it. reporter: his right foot studly became penned beneath six tons of metal. alone for 30 meants, nobody could hear his calls for help. hutt couldn t move his foot. but he was able to reach his pocketknife. worried he d blackout, me a take mattic decision. his pocketknife would become a saw. i thought, well, you better cut this thing off. reporter: hutt began to cut toe by toe. gritting my teeth and knowing i had to get it done. reporter: he sliced through bone, nerves and tendons. i he cut until i couldn t take it anymore and then i d stop and take a breath or two. reporter: by the time he reached his last toe, the big toe, hutt s sharp blade had gone dull. made me twitch a little bit, the nerves were still pretty alive. reporter: ten excruciating minutes later, it was all over. the am pewation was complete. what was left of his foot was finally freed. i think your toes are probably some of the most expendable. reporter: hobbleded, hutt was able to stop the bleeding. the 61-year-old wouldn t drive away until his boot was by his side. got high boot with my toe this is it got in the semi. and headed down out of that country. reporter: in his cab, hutt had a cell phone, but no service. he d drive 25 miles before key call for help. at the hospital, his wife, har get would finally reach him. gr first words out of his mouth were, well, they re still gone. reporter: john hutt lost some of his foot, but none of his humor. doctors may not have been able to save his toes, but hutt is certain he saved his open life. you don t regret it one bit? not one bit. not with not one iota. reporter: it reminds folks of another man from colorado, aaron, who was strap pod 127 hours before he amputated his arm. they made a movie about him called 127 hours. john hutt s wife joked with us maybe a movie should be made about her husband, this one called 30 minutes. oh, wow. they ve kept their sense of humor. thanks so much. and now here is savannah. 30 agonizing minutes. there s been a key decision tied to the disappearance of a maryland woman this aruba. a judge has rule that had the prime suspect will remain behind bars for 60 more days. jeff rossen is in aruba with details. jeff, good morning. reporter: hey, savannah, good morning. this is a big moment in this case that s been stretching on for nearly a month and it was a big decision as you mentioned by the judge here in aruba. keep in mind gary giordano has not been charged with anything yet. they re holding him on suspicion of a crime. yet the junk tound there s enough evidence to hold him for at least another two months, perhaps 30 days beyond that. prosecutors could apply for another extension. they re worried that he s a flight risk, that he ll get on the first plane back to the u.s. by now, gary giordano knows this place well. aruba s kia prison, loed up for 28 days and with this new court ruling, it will be home for 60 more. it is a victory for it aruba s on that prosecute it tore who believes giordano had something to do with the disappearance of robyn gardner. we keep asking questions of course because we want him to tell us either to tell us what happened or to tell us lie so is we can work with that. reporter: law enforcement sources tell nbc news giordano is no longer in isolation, now mingling with the other inmates. robyn gardner s friends back home in maryland just hope he ll talk. we realize, gary, you can t take back, you can t take back a wrong. you can t do that. but what you can do is you can start over and you can make it right. and just say where robyn is. reporter: giordano says he did nothing wrong and so far hasn t given any clues. which makes the next 60 days critical. prosecutors say they re anxious to find robrobyn, her body, any evidence tying giordano to a crime. a lot of americans are watching saying he s been in jail for almost a month now, now he ll be in jail for at least 60 more days. to some, that may seem like a lot being that he hasn t been charged with anything. our system is different from the american system. people are kept in pretrial detention i think easier than in the united states. that s because we don t have a system like bail. reporter: gary giordano has three children back in hear land. and a father battling cancer. tearing me up. reporter: frank giordano spoke exclusively with nbc news this week and maintains his son s innocence. i want to tell him that we miss him, we feel for him. that he s not alone even though we can t talk to him. reporter: pain for a taker defending his son anding a any for the parents of robin guard per who said wednesday we need to find our daughter, we pray that anyone who knows what happened that day will find the strength to contact authorities. absoluteliky relate on to them. i ve never met them, i don t know them, but i m sure that they re full of grief. how could you not be? thank yoyou. thank you? because? because i can help other people from this situation and grow from it. reporter: what she s learned is that bullies chose her because of how she walked. they didn t understand what cerebral palsy is. they only knew that she was different. so you see shall be getting bullied now, what can do you do? now today i feel a lot better, but at the time, i r regretted my actions. but at the same, i saved my daughter s life because right now she could have for the been with us. we re working on our website for the end of the month and then we re also going to do a march october 7th to make sure that this count itity will do might go to make sure that our kids are safe. we want to make sure they are safe. you watch that video and maybe not everyone would have chosen the exact same words, but i think every parent can relate to that feeling of wanting t protect your daughter. but you were punished. you had to pay a fine, you did community service. do you think it was correct that you faced criminal charges? yeah, i did something wrong so i had to pay the price of what i done. but other people do not want to do the same thing. so i did what i had to do to take care of myself. debra, how do you think shatare has been changed by the situation? like she said, i feel that she s grown up, i feel that she is starting healing. she s more positive. she realizes that just because she s different, she can make a difference. you drive her to school. you don t at that time bus anymore. how hard is it as a mom to just drop her off and let her walk new hose school gathose school ? it was hard, but she has a great school now that is very involved with her and i m just happy for her. let s talk about the issue of bullying. i know just today new jersey has one of the toughest anti-bullying pieces of legislation goes in to effect today. why is it important for states to get involved? it s important because what happens is that people are betrayed by educators. and i get really tired of listening to schools saying, no, you didn t have that experience on the bus, right? there was a different version of events. your version of events is the truth. you were hurt. but at the same time, i think even though this betrayal and it s understandable that parents get so crazy nervous and anxious and upset and fearful for their kids, so they re pushing on legislators to do something. and then we have this incredible pressure. so what we want to to be careful with is made in that desire to do that, we ve got police sometimes getting more involved than they should, that they re getting make crow managing into these issues, and so will it are some kids doing it in a more mindful way and you ve got to be really smart. so what i would say is is that people like the joness and people watch people doing this, we have to make legislation thoughtful and mindful, not reactive. slept advice. it s good to have you here. have a great school year. and coming up next, kids and vaccines. should doctors ban families who refuse to vaccinate their children? [ male announcer ] get everything you need for back to college, like the latest smartphones starting at 97 cents. save money. live better. walmart. this morning on today s health, the vaccine debate about that some doctors are now putting their feet down by turning away families who refuse to vaccinate their children. here s dra nancy snyderman. reporter: at just seven weeks, this baby came down with a cough. but it wasn t just any cough. daterrifying. definitely terrifying. she got better, she got worse. and she did have pertussis. reporter: it s a highly contagious disease. she was vulnerable because at the time she was exposed, she was too young for the pertussis vaccine. terrible. i wouldn t wish it on anybody. reporter: but now at 7, she s a growing healthy kid. the possibility that michaela hey have been exposed this her own pediatrician s office by an unvaccinated child is just one example of why her doctors, husband and wife team, recently create what had s becoming a growing policy. everyone who walks through their door must be vaccinated. we felt very committed to make our office a safe place for families to come with newborns who aren t vaccinated yet. and children who hadn t received certain vaccines yet. reporter: a letter was september out to all families in the practice. we believe that it is medically appropriate to exclude unvaccinated children from a pediatric practice to protect the vaccinated children from communicable infectious diseases. reporter: it was a decision that cost the office a few patients. but something these doctors firmly believe in. we did have a little bit of push back. anytime someone is looking for a physician or a practice, it s finding the right fit. and i think that he s kind of how we looked at this, that if you don t want to vaccinate, we re not the right fit. reporter: the american cad might have pediatrics says vaccines are one of the most successful medical advance of all time. but they worry that with the increase of physicians severing ties with families who don t vak p vaccinate, it s the children caught in the middle. i think we have to be skaf about refusing to take care of the kids simply because their parents may make decisions that we don t always agree with. reporter: it was a strict vak sin thags policy th vak sin nat attracted this family to the practice. bringing in where they re possibly not vaccinating their children puts our children at risk. reporter: and while the decision to vaccinate is an individual one, for michelle, the choice was clear. definitely not easy watching your child go through vaccinations in a visit. it s upsetting as a parent. but it s better than watching them secretary in a hospital. no comparison. dr. snyderman is here along with dr. thornton. and we know how you feel about vaccinations. very pro vaccinations. but will this idea according to the american academy of pediatrics is a trend that s growing. pediatricians turning away patients because their children are not getting vaccinated. the concern is you re going to turn away people and the physicians, you re there to help people and take every any. but let s give you the converse side. let s say you have a child with pneumonia or asthma or leukemia. and your child comes to me for health care and in that same office is a child who is carrying a virus that he or she hasn t been vaccinated against. that child is literally a walking typhoid marian, puts your child at risk. i think it s unconscionable for parents not to vaccinate your children. you have to have a certain part of the population vaccinated for all of us who can be vaccinated to be protected. so while i recognize there was push back, i do understand. you re a pediatrician. where do you come down on this? it s important to say that these pediatricians are not abandoning these children. they spend hours with parents who don t want to imunionize explaining the science and truth and trying to help them become comfortable with the thought. they re engaging parents. but if at the end of that lengthy discussion explaining how this endangers a lot of other children, in the just your own, then they decided that s not a good fit. it s interesting, vaccinations have become such a phenomenal success. they ve almost become a victim of their own success. so mothers your age have never seen poll i don t. they don t think pertussis will hit their kid. but if we don t vaccinate, those are exactly the problems we ll see. measles outbreaks in the last year. pertussis, i worry that things like polio could be around the corner. and they are if parents continue to not vaccinate. we lose herd immunity. bottom line, i think pediatricians turning well, i guess we re out of time. bottom line, sometimes doctor and patient are not a good fit. have an amicable divorce. that s right. thanks so much. back after your local news and weather. this is a news 4 news break. the 1st of september. let s go straight to tom kierein. he s looking at the forecast for a nice day, right, tom? a sports medicine physician here in new york, good morning. sports injuries dangerous at any age, but here you re talking about developing kids, teens. why is it so much who are important to make sure they re well protected? kids are in development at all times. and as their bones grow and bodies grow, they re more prone to injury. they have cartilage growth lates that i are susceptible to injuries. and it does seem like every year we re reporting more and more sports injuries. is it me or is the number growing? the we re seeing who are girls play sports, which has been terrific. but it means more kids playing. and the other thing we ve seen is specialization in sports. we have year-round baseball player, year-round soccer players. they re great athlete, but we re seeing more injuries. before your kid gets on a field, important to check in with a pediatrician? there s a free examine that they do before the sport season. it really prevents injuries from happening. let s talk about football because this is a sport where you see a lot of injuries and we have our young athlete here, kevin. as you know, they re especially concerned with head injuries an kocon and concussions. he s a big guy. in football particularly, we see a lot of injury, bruises, fractures and concussions. the football helmet, feel how heavy this is. oh, my goodness. and look at all the padding. you ll see a lot of reference to using new generation helmets. unlike any sports injury, concussions heal slower in kids than they do in adults. it s important that they re very clear and having no symptoms before they go back into activity. and another thing that we hear a lot about with heat related deaths. especially as they ve been outside in august, september, really hot months. and we of course have to remind everybody to hydrate. that s right. so it s interesting. sports that have a lot of padding leak football, kids have a tougher time dissipating heat. so those sports it s really important to take frequent breaks and to drink a lot of water and cool off. what position do you play? i m a quarterback actually. you look like a quarterback. good luck. let s move on to field hockey. big sport for girls, of course. we have 16-year-old emily here. she s on the usa olympic development squad. that s great. so what are some of the key injuries when it comes to field hockey? field hockey a great sport for girls to be involved with. the injury rate is relatively hoe. we see most of the injuries from getting masmack with a ball or stick. they wear shin guards and that s helpful because the ball is hard. so if that smacks you, it can make a big difference. and the stick also, those things can be receipt hard if they smack you. and then the hugh thing this year are these protective goggles. put those on. the girls aren t too excited at the beginning, but i think they look cool. and they make a big difference in terms of protecting high injuries. i think you look great. thank you, emily. moving on over here, we have our lacrosse player. one of the fastest growing sports in the country right now. good to see you. and what are the injury potentials here? jose is a lacrosse player. lacrosse for boys and girls is different. boys have all the padding and helmet. lacrosse for girls is only a stick and goggles. it s a noncontact sport. with boys, the risk is getting shacked with a stick and ball, they wear helmets and shoulder pads, et cetera. so you stay cool out there, okay? 42 years ago, this was only the holiday in libya and he would have been starting his 43rd year in power, instead he s on the run with a nearly $2 million bounty on on his head. rebels say they are now closing in on territory still held by moammar gadhafi s loyalists and fellow tribes men. outside kagadhafi s hometown, ty have up saturday to surrender or they ll invade. but gadhafi s own whereabouts remain unknown. in tripoli, rebels have been searching cars, even using photographs of how gadhafi height look dressed this disguise as a woman. what is known is that the gadhafi family has split up. last week, gadhafi s wife, two sons and a daughter fled to neighboring algeria. aisha who was pregnant reportedly gave birth at the border. but two of gadhafi s other sons appear to still be in libya and seem to be divided over what to do. on wednesday, gadhafi s son sadi told a tv station he s willing it to negotiate a surrender. if turning myself in would stop a blood bath, i don t mind doing it, he said, without revealing his location. but in a separate call, another son says he and his father will fight on. the leader is good, we are in libya, we are fighting, he said. the fact that he sent his wife and three of his children to algeria tells me now he appreciates that there is no return to the past. the gadhafi rule is over and the gadhafi dynasty is over. reporter: so where could gadhafi be? he might be hold up in tripoli, or in his hometown. or a gadhafi tribal strong hold. but analysts suggest who are likely is that gadhafi has fled to central or southern libya with pockets of loyalists and difficult terrain. few road, vast desert, oasis, caves and canyons. it s closer to the borders of algeria and susudan, giving mor option tos to escape the country. if caught, he ll be tried and executed by a firing squad. it was interesting gadhafi thousand on the run, history has taught us, though, pot to couno him out. how does the country move ford while they still don t know where he is? he they made the right call for a few reasons. number one, they re a business and this is going to be good television. i hate to use this word. it s reality tv. it s train wreck tv. unfortunately, this was a fatal train wreck. i think they re doing a smart thing because they re putting suicide hotlines on there, they re editing out very insensitive stuff. will is what comes with this territory. is it nice and warm and fuzzy is this but for them to cancel would be bad business. we should mention bravo a sister network of ours, but this brings up the age old question whether reality television causes a situation like this or does it just shine a light on it. you know, there s never been any indication that something that happened on the show is what actually caused russell to commit suicide. i actually was at the wedding of pandora. one of the cast members. and i talked to camille and to adrian specifically about this issue. their biggest concern was being able to be this for taylor and still have their obligation to bravo. so the real answer to this is to simply say, guys, in respect for his family, we re going to talk television now. you re a siwhat s your take a reality television show could exasser wait i don t think so. let s go back to the 70s kate. pbs launched this with an american family. and we watched an intimate family frankly self destructure. and that was pbs. so the reality is we re stepping in to real people s lives. they may not be real people it that a lot of us hang out with, but does it cause someone to kill himself, no. will they take advantage of someone killing himself? awful, awful, awful, awful. diets shouldn t even be in a child child slexicon. as a father, i ll disagree. obviously my eight-year-old daughter and she s so delicious, she said daddy, my belly i said you re not, you re beautiful. would you get her a diet book? no, here s what i would do. there is a sensitive subject if you have a child who you know is overweight who is not going to be healthy, who is going to have to put up with some difficulties in school, you they ever want to be the one, but if on her own she found a story about a girl who lost weight and then she was a better ath wleet and then she it s not about i don t think there will be a bad lesson for her to learn. the word quiet in the title is what gives me pause. maggie got healthy. or maggie is fierce. and as a part of being fierce, he we talk about good eating habits and exercise. but a doctor friend of mine said last night, if we re not going to get parents to listen, we have to go through children. so a book is a good way to do it, but not a titled book called diet. take the word out, but you have to hit it head on. little girls grow up not liking hair bodies and this teeds right into it. let s and you can about little girls who grow up and get plastic surgery. botox beauties is our next topic. new research says women who get botox are often viewed as vein and the cold and perhaps not surprising here, younger women were the most critical. i d like to know this study. i think it sounds like this is hog wash. the university of go mind your business? i mean, really. donny, do you think there s a double standard here? there is. if a man gets botox, it s like you re vain. women, that s what they do. whatever works. and of course it s the younger women who have a rob with it because they re not at that place. it s like a woman coloring her hair. you don t want to do so much that you can t smile, people don t know if you re smiling. you look ridiculous. what do you say to somebody who is a friend of yours who got a little too much work done and they look like the joker? do you say you look good or do you go what did they do to your pace? it does raise the question of whether women are really permitted to grow old gracefully. bottom line, it s every woman s choice. i still think gloria stein man is one of the great beautiful sexy women. who? i m roasting them dry. heavy duty pan. i like to do them on the grill, also. close them, put on the grill. how long? going to take about four, five minutes. bingo. this they are. this is from their own juices? only from their own juices. i put them on there dry. and what s the sauce? garlic, shal lot, tabasco, all the yummy things. here i m making a little stuffing. i have onion, peppers, lots of bacon. going to ahead in a little bread crumb. fresh oregano. tabas tabasco, mix it up. and then i just put a little bit maybe you can top these for me. put a little bit on top. don t pack it on. just put a little bit and a piece of bacon. put these in the broiler just until they get crisp. probably about three or four minutes at the most. i have some that are ready. do the old swap out. they get crispy and warm. that s good. in here, garlic, chili, white wine, a little bit of lemon juice. i have my clams cooking. as soon as they come up to speed, when they open as they are now, we just ahead our pass a. so you ve already cooked the pasta? growing up, i m the youngest sister and so i ve really been blessed. the main thing that she s taught me is to not take anything for granted. even the littlest things like when i was able to drive a car. i m the younger sister, so we ve had some difficulties along the way, but overall it s been just amazing. she s really taught me to always give people the chance to surprise you, because she s a product of it. she s amazing and she s so talented. when the doctors told you that because of the down syndrome you were going to have a child that would probably never function normally or at all, what was your first reaction? what made you say that is not going to happen to our child? well, first of all, the bottom dropped out, of course. and then, you know, we brought leah home and watched her begin to grow and develop and not long did i learn this gift from god is here to teach me and to teach others about what life is truly about. she s probably your life mission. she is my life mission. she began to be my life mission during her first year of life when i came to grips with all of it. i just decided that i m not going to let the doctors tell me what she can or cannot do but rather to let her show me what she can do. i love that you showed her the piano. leah, you re terrific. by the way, your boyfriend is very cute. i was like wow, he is cute. leah, he s a keeper. what do you love about playing the piano, leah? i enjoy playing for people in the audience and across the country and also cities too. i know you travel a lot and perform, don t you? i ve been traveling a lot and because of that, of piano. and i enjoy playing piano. it must be fun to be a family member watching. what s that like watching your sister perform?
