giants' hopes? welcome to fox 5 morning news. i'm melanie alnwick. sarah is off. inauguration day is underway at the walter e washington convention center. vincent gray will be sworn in. the ceremony begins at 10:00 a.m., then the swearing in ceremony for council members is at 1:00. all of these events are free and open to the public. there will be a black tie gala at 7:00 p.m. tickets are required. as we know, they are all spoken for. the work to prepare for the huge party has been going on for days. tables are being set up. 6600 chairs were brought in. 10,000 people are expected to party the nature away. all particular are gone. the search for a killer continues in bethesda. the victim, a hospital employee found dead on the job. audrey barnes has the latest. >> reporter: montgomery county police swarmed suburban hospital after getting the call of an assault inside the facility. they arrived within one minute. >> there they found a 40-year- old male employee of the hospital who had been assaulted, received trauma to the upper body. he was found in an area inside the hospital, non patient care area. he was pronounced dead at the scene. >> reporter: the hospital closed its emergency room and the facility was put on lockdown while investigators went room by room looking for a suspect. >> we immediately put into effect our disaster protocol. so after we locked down, we started a series of e-mail streams to all hospital staff, informing them every 15 minutes what was going on. >> reporter: detectives didn't find anyone. they would not say if this was a random act or if the victim knew his killer. after four hours of searching they determined there was no threat. >> today this is the police, conducted a thorough search of suburban hospital and they feel confident there's no danger at suburban hospital for patients, visitors, or staff. >> reporter: it made a stressful day even more so for people like jeff with a sick infant. >> we had to take him to the er real quick. we got a little bit more than we bargained for, i guess. and we are learning more about the scare and evacuation in and around the capital yesterday. a piedmont airlines pilot lost contact for 15 minutes and crossed into restricted airspace. fighter jets scrambled and everyone was ordered out of the scramble. turns out he inadvertently turned $radio to the wrong frequency. the plane safely landed at reagan. an eye-popping display of security at richmond international. a 20-year-old stripped off almost all of his clothes. when he was done all he had on was a pair of underwear and a reference to the fourth amendment written on his chest. he was given a ticket for disorderly conduct and he will be in court, hopefully fully clothed, in the next few weeks. more details are emerging about the midair collision in the shenandoah valley friday as a plane was taking off and a chopper was landing. police say the pilot was licensed but it's still unclear who was actually flying that plane, which does have dual controls. police in our area are on alert after the service weapon and badge of an mpd officer was stolen at a gas station in prince george's county yesterday afternoon. police say a d.c. officer was pumping gas when someone stole her purse out of her car and the gun and badge were inside. it's believed the suspects drove off in a newer model mercedes. the caps and penguins battled it out in the first nighttime winter classic. poor the burgundy and gold, it is the last chance to make an impression for the coaches and perhaps spoil the giants' playoff hopes. you've got to have something to play for. >> you absolutely do. they are still evaluating the redskins. as far as the caps we've been hearing about this buildup for weeks and it finally came to fruition. it was worth the wait. two big stories. we will begin with hockey. the winter classic in pittsburgh went on last night come rain, sleet, or snow. we almost had all three. but it was a great game, and this was the seen before the game. alex ovechkin getting fared up. erskine just kept beating down here. they finally stopped it. evgeni malkin gets a goal right there. 1-0 pittsburgh. but the caps would respond, and this one in a big way. and watch mike green. the puck in front, mike knuble going to get it in, his 9th of the year. that would swing the momentum. we are and he's happy for the team. today was the culmination, i think, of a lot of scrutiny for a month, and it didn't matter if he scored. he was part of a winning team. >> i think the most disappointing part is that of the day and the event, is we come out not winning the game, because it was a magnificent couple days. >> it was magnificent, and for the record, coach, i watch the hbo stuff as well. today is the end of the road for the skin, and possibly for the giants. the skins played spoiler last week with a win in jacksonville. today they will try to do it again to another possible playoff team, the new york football giants who have owned this matchup with the redskins as of late. winners of eight of their last nine including a 31-7 shellacking back in jersey in week 13. in that game, bradshaw and jacobs combined for 200 yards and each scored twice. the skins struggled on both sides of the ball on that day and they clearly know that they dropped the ball. but today a chance for redemption, and their season finale. >> we need to play better against this team. they got the best of us last time we played them. we want to go out and one our final home game. have a two-game winning streak to close out the season, give our fans something to be cheering about. >> go out there, defend our home field. this is our playoff game. this is all we got. it's going to be guys crying this off-season that's not going to have a job or guys that's going to be like, man, i can't wait for it to start up again. i think you are going to see a lot of guys playing their hearts out. >> ripped through friday morning. three people died. others barely survived. >> kind of hanging on to the carpet to get under the bed, then the floor disappeared, you know, maybe the second story floor, i guess maybe landed on me and pinned me. act of god, all that lifted off me, then it sucked me out by my feet and threw me across the highway. >> the death toll in missouri is now four. the governor toured the damage. hundreds of homes were damaged, dozens completely destroyed. it has been confirmed, three tornadoes ripped through the central part of mississippi on new year's eve. thousands are still without power in many of the surrounding areas. a living legend collapses during a performance. we'll tell you what happened to chuck berry in chicago. plus, flooding of biblical proportions has now become deadly in australia. cleanup expected to cost billions of dollars. more of these dramatic picture whose we return.  a healthcare store rock 'n' roll legend chuck berry. the 84-year-old collapsed while performing in chicago last night. he was escorted off the stage but did he return about 20 minutes later. he tried to perform but told the crowd he just didn't have the strength. berry was ill before the show but he has since been checked out and is reportedly feeling better. the flooding in australia has claimed its first victim. one official has described it as reaching biblical proportions. about 200,000 people have been affected. dozens of grieving christians are praying this morning in a blood splattered church where 21 people were killed and 80 others injured. a powerful bomb exploded in front of the church as worshipers emerged from a new year's mass in the city of alexandria. the bombing comes in the wake of repeated threats by al-qaeda and iraq. and homeland security secretary janet napolitano is getting a firsthand look at the effort to support afghanistan from across the border. >> reporter: after 15 hours of travel homeland security secretary janet that poll tan no walked up the gravel slopes to forward operations base. immigrations, cuss symptoms, and the coast guard first arrived here months ago. fox news is traveling exclusively with the secretary to europe, the middle east, and afghanistan. >> it's going to be a pretty intense week coming up because we're going to see a lot of different things. but it's always better to see than just to read a memo, because it gives awe much more direct feel for what needs to happen. >> the homeland security training teams that work on these remote bases are part of a civilian surge where afghans are taught some of the same skills as american border agent. they include drug trafficking and human smuggling. the cash collected at the border is half of afghanistan's yearly budget minus foreign aid. this is one of the main border crossings, and right now about five miles from the pass. rather than take an armored vehicle today for security reasons the secretary will do a flyover. what's plain during our chopper flight is the mountains are stung but it's some of the roughest terrain on the planet. agents say there are cultural issues to work out. the region is no maddic. documentation like a passport or birth certificate is problematic with afghanistan's low rate of literacy. the secretary concedes the obstacles are considerable but her department is chiseling away. >> longer term, obviously, the goal is for afghanistan to have full civilian law enforcement capacity. >> we talked about how a secure border is really in america's interest. >> it goes to how we confine core al-qaeda and keep core al- qaeda functions limited in terms of their geographic reach. >> secretary napolitano expects to be back because homeland scoter's presence will grow in 2011. as we get started and geared up to start back to work tomorrow, plenty of people are ready to say good by to 2010 and hello to 2011. what do we have to look forward to? milestone birthdays and royal events, just some of the events we'll be marking in the coming year.  just a reminder to get some change ready if you take the dulles toll road. prices increased. you will now have to pay an extra 25 cents, so it will be $1.25 for a two-axle vehicle. on and off-ramps will cost 75 cents. now to a fox 5 follow-up. nearly 1,000 people made the smart choice and took a free cab home during the new year's celebration. a record 967 people accepted free rides. the washington regional alcohol program has been offering free cab rides to folks who have had too much to drink since 1993. here are some of the stories expected to make headlines in the week ahead. the first family returns from their holiday vacation in hawaii early tuesday morning. the president has been seen golfing and spending time with his wife and daughters. he spent the first day of the new year working out and playing tennis. then on wednesday new members of congress will be sworn in as republicans take control of the house. among the other notable changes, john boehner steps in as speaker of the house, and nancy pelosi as house minority leader. the fairfax county school superintendent plans to present his budget proposal. it includes a 2% cost of living pay increase for teachers. the county already saw cuts this year with its budget. students now have to pay fees to participate in sports. salaries were frozen for the second year in a row. now we look forward to 2011 and all that's expected, whether it's excitement or somber anniversaries. next year is anticipated to bring lots of intrigue. fox reports. >> reporter: the popular on- line encyclopedia wikipedia celebrates in 10-year anniversary. it's become one of the largest and most popular research sites on the internet. speaking of birthdays, president obama turns 50 years old, and twitter marks the 5th anniversary of the first tweet. over to politics where republicans take control of the house of representatives and gain more influence in the senate. presumed house speaker john boehner vows toned big spending and to repeal president obama's healthcare reform. americans will see the resurgence of likely presidential candidates. some of the most talked about, sarah palin, mitt romney, mike huckabee and newt gingrich. as the only cabinet member to have served by george w. bush and president obama, robert gates plans to retire. a wedding fit for a princess. the entire world will be watching prince william and kate middleton get married in westminster abbey, the historic church where princess diana's funeral was held. and in monaco another royal wedding. in what's one of the biggest changes in syndication, oprah winfrey ends her tv chat show. however, this is anything but a retirement. oprah will shift her efforts to "own," the oprah winfrey network. "american idol" moves from tuesday and wednesday to the more competitive wednesday- thursday combo. nasa is scheduled to retire its 30-year-old space shuttle program. and a very sad milestone will come in 2011 marking the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. an occasion sure to come with elaborate commemorations, intense debates about the war on terror and concerns about possible anniversary attacks. the u.s. begins withdrawing forces despite reservations among some in the military that hard deadlines are a mistake. the last remaining u.s. troops are set to leave iraq by the end of the year but the iraqi government may request some soldiers to remain in that country. the struggling economy will continue to be a major focus in 2011 as experts and pundits survey the situation for signs of improvement or of double-dip recession. in washington, shannon brean, fox news. and congress resumes this week with republicans taking control of the house. fox news sunday talks to two of them and a couple of tea party newcomers. plus, some wet weather mixed with unusually warm temperatures grate the new year. tuchler be back to explain as the work week be gibbs. [ female announcer ] go to yoplait.com to start your two week tune up. welcome back to fox 5 morning news. you are seeing a live look at the capital dome. congress will convene wednesday. can we expect more bipartisan deals or will there be more stale mates? fox news sunday is talking with two members what will take over chairmanships of two of the most powerful committees. chris wallace joins us now. happy new year. >> same to you. >> this is sort of, for republicans, they asked for the ball, now they've got run with it. >> it's like the end of the movie, what do we do now. but i don't think they lack for ideas about what to do now. clearly the voters believe they sent them a message, which is confront president obama, try to block his agenda, and particularly cut spending. and so on your question that you asked as you led into this about are we going to see deals or confrontation, i think we'll see a little bit of both but probably more confrontation than compromise. and we are going see it real early because the continuing resolution they passed in the lame duck session runs out the end of february, early march. you've got the debt ceiling. they are going to have to vote to increase the debt over $14 trillion. they are going to have to do that about the same time. i think you are going to see a real battle over spending at about that moment. >> the interesting thing, chris, the battle is not just going to be between republicans and democrats but there may be an internal battle going on between the boehner republicans and these new tea party candidates. >> absolutely. you mentioned two of these key committee chairman, and we're also going to have on the show two tea partyers, alan west and mike lee. the tea party, through all the praise about the lame duck session, the tea partyers are furious. they say you added another trillion dollars of debt, billions of dollars for the 9/11 first responders, reinstated the estate tax. that wasn't the message of the voters in the midterms. they're maryland at the gop establishment. >> obviously it's very important, and the tea partyers were also upset they didn't get any committee appointments, so these are key important positions. as you mentioned, you are going to have on eissen and upton what. do we expect to see out of them? >> it's going to be this very interesting and delicate dance that's going to go on. neither side wants to be seen as obstructionists. there is the possibility of government shutdowns or failure to increase the debt limit which means that we would basically default on our obligations. on the one hand, nobody wants to go too far, but i think you are going to see a lot of jockeying, a lot of posturing, sometimes they will make deals, most of the times they won't. and as with bill clinton and newt gingrich in '95, at some point both sides are going to pick a fight that they think this is the one we want to stand on this is the one we want voters to judge us on
