in sight. the devastation over the past year and a half has been hard. the u.n. is reporting more than 9,000 civilians have been killed in ukraine since the war began. another 15,000 have been in injured. there are nearly 6 million people internally displaced in the country and almost 8 million refugees have been recorded in neighboring nations and across europe. 17.6 million people have are in need of humanitarian assistance. volodymyr zelenskyy marked the milestone by visiting a site that's become symbolic. >> translator: today we are here on the snake island, which will never be conquered by the occupier, nor ukraine because we are the nation of the free. today we have honored our heroes, all the soldiers who fought for this identity land and who liberated it. even though it's a small piece of land, it's proof that ukraine will regain every part of its territory from here from this
