DAVID ROONEY: So, it's the 900th day of the Oscar season that never ends, and we're all beaten down to sad states of broken surrender by the unrelenting deluge of awards punditry. ("Just hand out the damn statuettes!" he pleaded, quietly sobbing.) What gets to me at this point is not the mystifying breathlessness over who will win best editing, as if that's the climax of some nail-biting Barbara Stanwyck noir, but the proliferation of bad takes on an impressively diversified crop of contenders.

The mother-daughter coming-of-age movie “Miss Juneteenth” tells the story of Turquoise Jones and her teenage daughter Kai. Born and raised on the historically Black south side of Fort Worth, TX, Turquoise, played by Nicole Beharie, achieved her dream in her youth when she won the local Miss Juneteenth pageant. That’s a real event, and it comes with a coveted crown and scholarship.

Nicole Beharie embraces imperfection for 'Miss Juneteenth'


When Nicole Beharie reflects on “Miss Juneteenth,” she gets philosophical.
“There’s this idea, this Japanese philosophy: wabi-sabi. It’s sort of reminding yourself what’s essential, simple and imperfect, and in flux. If you have a ceramic or something and there’s a crack in it, you would paint, like, gold wherever the cracks are to show that there’s beauty in that; the sort of beautiful and broken,” the actress says by video call. “I feel like I walked away with that awareness ... we’re all wonky as hell, chipped and cracked, and maybe if we paint gold in those places and stop trying to hide them and not look at our past, maybe we can move forward.
