they found the bombs wired to cell phones. minister not saying where he got the information from. we know the communication cards have been removed and the phones could not receive calls making it likely the terrorists intended the timer function to detonate the bombs. more information right after this break. officials also said that the bomb was attached to a syringe containing a chemical initiator that would have detonated the petn explosives packed into each printer cartridge. both the petn and the syringe were used in the failed bombing last christmas at the detroit bound airline. ali? >> all right. it was a historic election for republicans. the biggest shift in power in several decades. but is the country's move to the right an indication of what might happen come 2012? tim pawlenty joins us with reaction. great to have you in studio. >> great to be here. >> tell us how you interpret tuesday's results. was it a rebuke of the democrats and embrace of the republicans? >> this is no question a referendum in part on the

the dna whether at ancestry.com or another dna service. but you need to look at all of family history. >> reporter: revealing history about my father roland and his father john and his father creed. >> you have such strong people in your family tree. you look at creed and john that go from not being able to read to owning land, born into slavery and then becoming landowners, always improving themselves. it's quite a legacy that you have. >> i saw this earlier, stephanie. i mean, there's so much interesting in there. but for two seconds i thought stephanie elam is white? >> reporter: yeah. i've gotten that a few times from people, ali. and that's the thing. there's two things i need to point out. "a," we were looking at the line that is my mom's mom's mom's all the way back and dad's dad's dad's dad. there's a lot of branches. my dad is very much a black man

>> i really hate the split that we have between democrats and republicans. i mean, they're elected to represent us. >> the problem is, i don't think it's republican or democratic. the problem is politicians. they're busier fighting each other, fight sth parties instead of paying attention to what's going on. and they would rather have someone lose of the opposite party than do something that's actually going to help the public. >> reporter: well, ali, as you know, we're just getting started on this tour. this is our third stop, just second day but third stop. start in charlotte, stopped in columbia, south carolina and here we are in aiken. the theme we're finding so far young people despite whatever rally you may see, president hold or enthusiastic young people on campus, young people are not engaged at all in this midterm. secondly we're starting to see a lot of the tone in washington is starting to permeate locally as

well where a lot of people are on one side or the other and it doesn't seem like there's any compromise or anybody willing to give anything. who knows what we'll find continued down the road, ali, but so far those are things we're picking up this week. >> let's compare this to 2008. things why different on a number of levels including the fact we were in the throes, the worst of that financial crisis. but young people seemed to like barack obama's message in particular, the idea of a green energy future, the idea of a candidate who seemed to appeal to them. that seems to be lost in the idea of midterm elections. there's no central candidate or central point around which to rally and they're not interested in rallying around political parties. >> reporter: we have to remind ourselves as well historically midterms it's lower. and his toshgally no matter what election young people don't turn out to vote no matter if it's midterm or presidential leeks but came out for barack obama. they could see it. they could touch it. they could hear the hope and change and see what they were

two weeks to go before the elections. the delaware senate contest is back in the news. wolf blitzer knows that one better than anyone. he's part of the best political team in television. he's here with the very latest developments. wolf, good to see you. >> ali, thanks very much. lots of news crossing cnnpolitics.com on our political ticker. christine donnell, she's the republican nominee for the senate in delaware. she had another debate with chris coons, the democratic nominee. unfortunately for christine o'donnell, she had some problems with the constitution. once again, she suggested that the first amendment to the constitution does not directly deal with the separation of church and state, which of course has been the widely interpretation of the first amendment for a long time. she was asked about teaching creationism in public schools. she -- and somebody pointed out that the first amendment call

i think it's way more involved than that. it's gotten worse in the last year instead of better. >> reporter: so you hear common concerns there, ali. listen to this for a formula for success for aiken. their business here is the nuclear business, if you will. an old nuclear plant here that was responsible for nuclear materials during the cold war. it's not making those materials now, but still is having to be dismantl dismantled. employs thousands of people. equestrian industry is here. you don't find that everywhere. it's a big retirement community. they come down, they support it. a lot of golf courses employing a lot of people. they have a formula that they're able to sustain themselves. not the case everywhere. i don't know if we can call this a success story, but we found a place that's not as worse off as many other places are. >> listen, you are on the bus all week? >> reporter: all week, baby. >> tomorrow, show me the inside of the bus. i miss it a lot.

>> as a former attorney general, christine and i talked about this all week, we are very, very frustrated that once again the banks have been shown to have done something that was wrong, insensitive, maybe even illegal, who knows. but the bottom line is, while we think the book should be thrown at them, doesn't a prolonged legal process initiated by all of these attorneys general, isn't that just going to delay the recovery while these houses that otherwise would have been sold are not getting sold? >> look, ali, you obviously think about many different factors when you proceed with an investigation of this sort. and i think the question should be asked is what else is lurking beneath the surface? because i hate to say, it every time you pull back the layer of the onion, you find something else and you can't conclude this is the end of it. and i would generally agree there are not going to be a lot of houses not being in it, but you never know. and i will tell you, i worked with tom miller, all of these ags. i think the banks need to clean up their act. it is so clear that the servicers, the banks haven't been meticulous.

we've got -- we've still got low interest rates, it's still a good deal to buy a house in most markets. we've seen remarkable returns on the stock market. we're seeing an increase just friday in consumer confidence and retail spending. there are a lot of things on the positive side of the ledger. >> but the two things people feel are their jobs and house. and those are the two things that haven't improved. and also where people are seeing those improvements, ali, in the economy, it's companies, corporate profits are doing better, a great snapback for corporate profits, but they're having discussions in the board rooms about whether they should be buying back their shares or whether they should be giving a dividend to their investors, not necessarily about whether they should be hiring a lot of people. so the thing that people feel still haven't turned around. and on the recovery front, yes, there has been a recovery. we know there's been a recovery, but even the fed is concerned that recovery now is slowing. even that recovery is slowing and trying to figure out how to
