It’s easy to see why director Ryan Murphy was attracted to this Tony-nominated stage musical; it’s basically a double-length episode of his hit TV series, “Glee.”
On steroids. With an A-list cast.
“The Prom” — a Netflix original — boldly blends serious social commentary with frivolous Broadway razzmatazz, and gets away with it because the Bob Martin/Chad Beuelin script cheekily acknowledges as much.

I have been looking forward to “The Prom” because I love the cast and I love musicals. And, I never miss a Meryl Streep movie.
In my opinion, multiple Academy Award-winner Streep is the greatest actress alive, and in “The Prom,” she doesn’t disappoint. She is joined by a stellar cast, including Academy Award-winner Nicole Kidman, Keegan-Michael Key, Kerry Washington, James Corden, Tracy Ullman and Mary Kay Place. The singing and acting are superb.
Only thing, even though Jo Ellen Pellman was wonderful, I had trouble thinking of her as a high school kid. She is a little too mature, but she has a wonderful voice, so her age can be overlooked.

How 'The Prom' Changed Dancer Vasthy Mompoint's Life 3 Times From Broadway to Netflix

Updated: 6:17 AM PST, December 26, 2020
Originally hired as a dancer in the movie musical on Netflix, Vasthy Mompoint was pulled from its chorus to lead choreography for several days during the height of racial justice protests.
For Vasthy Mompoint, the Black Lives Matter movement hit her heart the moment she walked onto the set of "The Prom” over the summer. She was the only person of color there, and for the first time in her life, she had authority. That simple realization raised her consciousness and her self-esteem.
"That is what this movement is all about," she said to herself.
Originally hired as a dancer in the movie musical on Netflix, the Haitan-American dancer was pulled from its chorus to lead choreography for several days during the height of racial justice protests. Production on the film had just picked up again in Los Angeles using strict COVID-19 safety protocols. The movie’s choreographer, Casey Nicholaw, and his associates could not be there. So he asked Mompoint to take over.

Bay Area Reporter :: Bombing 'The Prom'

Chicago got the ball rolling. Then it was followed by the dismal Nine and the disastrous
Into The Woods. Marshall's next project? The live-action
The Little Mermaid.
Now Ryan Murphy, who shares Marshall's initials, as well as his taste for bombast and Meryl Streep, has entered the fray with his big screen version of the Tony-nominated 2018 musical
The Prom (Netflix). Murphy's love of musicals and theatrics can be traced back to his inexplicably popular network TV series
Glee. His Emmy-winning 2014 movie adaptation of Larry Kramer's dramatic play
The Normal Heart proved he had the talent for transferring stage to screen.

'The Prom' Is Breezy, Peppy and Tells Us a Gloomy Story Doesn't Have to Be Dreary Itself

'The Prom' Is Breezy, Peppy and Tells Us a Gloomy Story Doesn't Have to Be Dreary Itself
The Netflix film is impressive when it tackles and resolves individual stories. But it occasionally falters at processing the big picture.
A still from 'Prom'.
The American musical
The Prom, streaming on Netflix, dances around a simple question: Will Edgewater High School, in Indiana, hold the annual prom?
The head of the Parent-Teacher Association, Mrs. Greene (Kerry Washington), has cancelled it, because Emma Nolan (Jo Ellen Pellman), a high school senior, wanted to attend it with her girlfriend, a Black girl named Alyssa (Ariana DeBose), the daughter of the PTA head. Edgewater is a small conservative town, and same-sex dates flout communal values.

'The Prom' is saccharine, yet delightful, Broadway homage

Grade: 3.5/5.0
Though a Ryan Murphy-directed movie musical wasn’t the year-end spectacle most people were hoping for, “The Prom” shouldn’t be discounted just yet: “The Prom” is whimsical in every sense of the word. From its jewel-toned, bold color schemes to the pure notion that small-town homophobia can be solved with a song and a few Broadway stars, the film’s sheer optimism cannot be denied.
Following the failure of their latest show, Broadway veterans Dee Dee Allen (Meryl Streep) and Barry Glickman (James Corden) are looking for any new project that can revitalize their reputations. Enter Emma Nolan (Jo Ellen Pellman), a lesbian from Indiana whose prom was canceled because she wanted to bring her girlfriend Alyssa (Ariana DeBose).

The Prom delivers a fun, feel-good Netflix date

The Prom delivers a fun, feel-good Netflix date
Despite pacing problems and a miscast James Corden, this starry adaptation of the Broadway musical scores big laughs

The Prom
When
The Prom debuted on Broadway in 2018, most people complained it had two competing stories. One was a hilarious satire about show-business self-absorption—which everyone, including me, thought was superior—while the other was a sentimental one about inclusion and diversity in middle America. Ryan Murphy’s charming new Netflix adaptation of
The Prom makes the transitions between these stories smoother. But some wonky casting choices and an overly long running time might make you check the other “What’s new on Netflix” offerings during its lengthy second half.
