This limited eight-part series is a co-production between BBC One and Netflix chronicling the crimes of real-life French serial killer Charles Sobhraj (Tahar Rahim), who murdered young tourists between 1975 and 2000. Sobhraj, a man of Vietnamese and Indian descent, drugged and robbed young travelers in Thailand and elsewhere, stealing victims' identities, passports, and traveler's checks, and used the money to buy stolen gems at a discount to sell at a profit in Europe. With the help of his Québécois girlfriend, Marie-Andrée Leclerc (Jenna Coleman), and Indian henchman Ajay Chowdhury (Amesh Edireweera), they seemed untouchable ... until a relentless Dutch junior diplomat, Herman Knippenberg (Billy Howle), began investigating the disappearance of two Dutch tourists. Review: The Serpent takes its time to build intrigue

The Serpent takes its time to build intrigue
Its split-level storytelling structure is frustrating, but the eight-episode limited-series is an effective slow-burn peek into Sobhraj’s shenanigans

Once you are able to get past its initial slow-burn pace and its frustrating byzantine narrative structure,
The Serpent is a largely intriguing — and often unnerving — look at the life and legend of Charles Sobhraj. ‘Legend’ is, perhaps, a misnomer for a man as notorious as Sobhraj, but Google tells me that ‘legendary’ is one of the many synonyms for ‘notorious’. How else does one describe a man who murdered without breaking into a sweat, but also mesmerised with his innate charm? An eight-episode limited-series watch,

'The Serpent': Where is Ajay Chowdhury Now?

The Serpent, streaming now on Netflix, tells the story of a true crime spree committed by three people—Charles Sobhraj (played by Tahar Rahim) and accomplices Marie-Andree Leclerc (Jenna Coleman) and Ajay Chowdhury (Amesh Edireweera).
We know what happened to two of them. Sobhraj is currently serving a life sentence in a Nepal jail, while Leclerc died of ovarian cancer in April 1984.
Where is Ajay Chowdhury from
The Serpent now?
What happened to Ajay Chowdhury is actually one of the greatest mysteries of the Sobhraj case—even more mysterious than why Sobhraj visited Nepal in 2003 despite there being a warrant out for his arrest.

Netflix's new show 'The Serpent' inspired by a serial killer's true story

Netflix's New Show 'The Serpent' Inspired By A Serial Killer's True Story
'The Serpent' is based on real-life serial killer Charles Sobhraj. Read on to know more about his life and the crimes he committed.
Netflix’s new series
The Serpent is based on the true story of serial killer Charles Sobhraj. It is an eight-part series that was released on Netflix on April 2. The co-producer of the series Paul Tester told a media outlet that it was a challenge to tell a true story and that there was a long development period of the series. The show focuses on Charles Sobhraj’s crimes and arrest in 1976 which was led by a Dutch diplomat, Herman Knippenberg. The series has received a very good response from the audience and critics alike.

Who Was The Serpent's Ajay Chowdhury in Real Life, and Where Is He Now?

Netflix’s
The Serpent depicts the horrifying true crimes committed—in some capacity—by Charles Sobhraj (“Alain”), Marie‐Andrée Leclerc (“Monique”), and Ajay Chowdhury. Lead by Sobhraj, the group befriended, poisoned, stole from, impersonated, and killed at least a dozen western tourists traveling through Thailand, India, and Nepal in the 1970s.
Of the group, Ajay—consistently referred to by his only his first name—feels more literary than real. Ajay is something of a Faustian figure whom Charles Sobhraj meets somewhere in Asia and, at least in the show, entices to commit progressively violent crimes. One of these acts is the stabbing and then burning of American backpacker Connie Jo Boronzich and Canadian tourist Laurent Carrière. Those murders were committed in Nepal and were real. In the series, they act as something like Ajay’s christening. The night before, Ajay is shown having a psychedelic experience with a western tourist before Sobhraj confronts him and questions his loyalty. Killing Boronzich and Carrière become, in the series at least, his initiation act, his deal with the devil.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT:
In the 1970s, merciless killer Charles Sobhraj preys on travelers exploring the "hippie trail" of South Asia.
WHAT WE THOUGHT:
The Serpent, now streaming on Netflix.
What followed was an Easter weekend binge and hours spent on the internet, getting to know the man identified and later charged as a murderer, thief and seductive master of disguise in the mid-70s.
The Serpent, which first aired on BBC One earlier this year, follows Dutch diplomat Herman Knippenberg (Billy Howle) as he investigates the disappearance of a pair of Dutch backpackers in Bangkok. With recruited help from anyone he can get, including his then-wife, Angela (Ellie Bamber), his pursuit leads him to Sobhraj (Tahar Rahim) and his accomplices, including Marie-Andrée Leclerc (Jenna Coleman) and Ajay Chowdhury (Amesh Edireweera). All of whom have been drugging, robbing and killing young tourists travelling between Europe and South Asia.

The Serpent, based on notorious criminal Charles Sobhraj, keeps you hooked

Who exactly was Charles Sobhraj — the ultimate ladies’ man, the conniving conman or the vilest serial murderer? If the question continues to intrigue you, there is no reason why the BBC/Netflix series, The Serpent, won’t. However, the series does not gloss over the crimes of this hardened criminal. Sure, the actor Tahar Rahim playing half-Indian, half-Vietnamese, Charles Sobhraj is a handsome man and looks every bit enigmatic too. His sweetheart Marie-Andrée Leclerc aka Monique (Jenna Coleman) matches his glamour all the way. Beneath their charm offensive lie sinister designs.
The series does not let his obvious (and venomous) charm take away from his pitiless acts. The fact that in his heyday he was a smart cookie who hoodwinked not just his victims, but also the police is factored in. But above all he was a killer who had no compunction in robbing/murdering gullible men and women, mostly hippies.
