Crown Resort linked money launderer and Triad arrested in Thailand

An alleged international drug boss suspected of laundering millions of dollars through gaming giant Crown Resorts has been arrested in Thailand, where he is fighting efforts to be extradited to Australia.
The arrest of Chung Chak “John” Lee in late December is part of ongoing efforts by Australian authorities to weaken a transnational organised crime syndicate known as The Company which Asia Pacific policing officials and the United Nations estimated was at times responsible for up to 70 per cent of the methamphetamine entering this country.
Alleged Triad boss Chung Chak Lee
Mr Lee, who operated out of Hong Kong and Bangkok, allegedly directed a high-roller gambling tour business that had partnered with Crown to use the gaming company’s Melbourne casino to launder millions in drug funds out of Australia in 2012.

Arrest of 'Asia's El Chapo' might be a hollow victory

On 22 January, alleged drug lord Tse Chi Lop was arrested at Amsterdam’s Schipol airport as a result of an extradition request from the Australian Federal Police. Tse’s arrest would’ve been cause for celebration among the AFP’s senior officers and rank and file. Some of those officers have spent more than 12 years pursuing Tse and his syndicate, ‘The Company’. While the AFP got their man, his arrest and prosecution will have little impact on the price, purity or availability of illicit drugs on Australia’s streets.
The arrest of Tse, dubbed ‘Asia’s El Chapo’, makes for great media headlines. There’s no denying it’s an epic saga, with an arch villain and the good guys getting their man in the end. Tse was no ordinary criminal: he doesn’t appear to have handled illicit drugs himself, and to date appears to have never set foot in Australia. Between his extradition from the Netherlands and lengthy court cases and appeals in Australia, it’ll be many years before he will be held accountable for his alleged crimes.

Today, we hear from Reuters chief correspondent in Southeast Asia, Tom Allard. He's been a leading reporter on the story and he's here to explain how Tse has allegedly revolutionized and dominated the underground industry.

In brief
The federal government is under growing pressure to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of drugs, and the city of Vancouver is paving the way. Vancouver is moving to decriminalize simple possession of all illicit drugs, and instead treat substance use as a health issue. Benjamin Perrin, a professor of law at the University of British Columbia, said that will reduce stigma, redirect police resources and create a pathway for people to be connected with treatment services instead of the justice system. He called the current policy "senseless and cruel" at a time when overdose deaths are at record levels across the country. Read more about other changes already happening in policing and the courts.

An alleged drug lord, dubbed Asia's El Chapo, has been arrested following a two-year manhunt.
Tse Chi Lop, a Chinese-born Canadian national, is accused of being one of the world's biggest meth dealers whose network, known as The Company or Sam Gor Syndicate, is reported to be responsible for up to 70 percent of all drugs entering Australia.

Downfall of a drug lord: why NZ Police welcome an arrest in Amsterdam

It was the end of a long game of cat and mouse with authorities around the world, and one that has been welcomed by police in New Zealand.
The sting was engineered by Australian Federal Police (AFP), whom the New Zealand Police’s Detective Superintendent Greg Williams, national manager of organised crime, congratulated.
“Tse Chi Lop and his network [have] had a significant negative impact on communities in both Australia and New Zealand as a result of their role in the methamphetamine trade, seen particularly with the fall in methamphetamine prices in Southeast Asia in recent years,” Williams told
